Drop back maybe only maybe one or two slots. I think there are 2 special players in the Sammy kid and Clowney. As long as we get the one we want then auction the other off??? but take what the guy behind us who wants the other guy take a 2nd? Maybe a 3rd to drop one spot and get our special talent.
We earned and worked hard for that #4 position! Lets get the special talent! jmho
No eo Only trade out if we can swap firsts and get a first next year.
That first next year is not up for negoiation.
That is the wildcard that puts us in the Winston, Mariota sweepstakes. I would prefer that over Clowney or Sammy - though I really like Sammy. We would have 2 firsts this year and next. If these guys knock this year out of the park, we are still sitting pretty for next year.
Finally, we will be on course.

I'm good with Manziel.
High Risk
High potential Reward
If we draft him and don't give up three firsts doing it, then I'm looking forward to this fall.

What I don't get is if you look at Houston, Jacksonville, Cleveland, Oakland, and Minnesota... how can you justify any of them passing on a QB if there's one they think could be a starter? I would say of those teams Cleveland is the most-likely to pass, and that's not saying a lot. You could argue St. Louis and Tampa in the top 8 as well.
That's why we have to get into the top two. As you said an argument can be made that the Rams can also draft a QB, but they have been steadfast in their support for Bradford. If they get rid of Bradford in the coming weeks, before the free agent period starts, then we know what their plan is. I doubt that they would keep Bradford and draft a new QB.
St. Louis is sitting pretty. . .again. And this they are sitting pretty because they were sitting pretty the last time. Even if the trade down to four they either get the best offensive tackle or they get the best receiver (assuming QBs go #1 and #2). Let's just hope Banner doesn't crap the bed like Holmgren did in negotiating the trade (in hindsight it was probably better that we didn't make the trade).

Cleveland is already considered a joke. At some point you have to consider player morale and retention. The entire base of talent we've built through a couple of good drafts will be gone if we don't draft a decent QB soon. Very soon.

I like Teddy better than either Mariota or Winston.
Mariota is so overrated. He doesn't read coverages at all. He has one read. If it's not there, he takes off running. That would be a blunder.
Winston is very talented, but I think he struggles reading some coverages, as evidenced in the Auburn game. He also seems very weird.
Teddy is a safer pick than either of them. Johnny Football has more bust potential than Winston, but less than Mariota. I don't think any of these guys have more star potential than Manziel.
Guys like Steve, tab, and cfrs have it right. We need to get a QB. We are in excellent position to finally do so. We made the TRich trade for precisely this reason. Get it done.

Also - I know I say this almost every year - this time I really really mean it...lol
I don't think we will be in a top 5 drafting position for a while...we just have too much young talent on this team that will mature. So this could be a last chance of a special QB - Teddy we would have to fight hard at #2 to get him if the Texans decide on JM...but hopefully JM would not be that high of an investment needed even if we have to move to #2 the competition to move up n give a lot will not be great.

Seems to me that O'Brien likes big strong Qb's. I wouldn't be surprised if the Texans went with Bortles #1 overall.

Well, to be fair, you are comparing Winston in his first year as a college starter (on the national championship stage) to Bridgewater in his third... What did Bridgewater look like 2 years ago? I can give you the numbers...
In his first year as a starter, Bridgewater completed 65% of his passes for a 7.2 ypa and had 14 TDs and 12 INTs...
Winston, against better competition, in his first year completed 67% of his passes for 10.6 ypa.. 40 TDs and 10 INTs...
I will say this for Bridgewater, he has improved pretty much every statistical category every year that he has been at Louisville... and that's promising...

There is no "next year" in the Brown's search for a quarterback. They will make their play to get their quarterback this year.
With Hoyer in the barn and the leverage of having two first rounders a quarterback is going to get drafted this year early.
All the Browns/Manziel talk at this point in time is just chatter. If the Brown's were all in on Manziel do you think they would put out all this stuff to tell the competition their intentions? What purpose would it serve the Brown's to publish their intention to draft Manziel? Whatever your opinion of this management team; they are not ill informed and inexperienced.
We do not know the Browns real take on this years quarterback prospects. They may well think Bortles is their guy because of his size and his ability to win under pressure. They may love everything about Bridgewater and be prepared to move if necessary to get him. They could believe that Manziel is a one of kind savior. Who knows maybe they are eyeing Carr or Garoppolo with their later pick.
There are so many factors that go into 2015 draft that they will not be counting on that draft to get their quarterback. There is no way that I see Haslam/Banner saying let's get our guy in 2015.
Like it or not this is the year. No matter who it is I sure hope it proves to be the right guy.

What stuff have the Browns put out? I've seen them asked questions, which they answered with few details.. and I've seen the media going nuts in all directions talking about trade ups, trade downs, waiting for this guy or that guy...... but, and this isn't meant to be sarcastic, what has the team actually said about Manziel?

I think that is what he is saying. The media is reporting that the Browns love Manziel and are willing to trade up to get him. But the Browns have given no indication. And Bonefish points out, what purpose would they have in letting that information out.

Not sure which excuse to use. I'm either too lazy to do the research, or too busy. Or, both.
One sports journalist after another is coming out with Teddy not having an NFL arm, and that he makes very few NFL caliber throws. This seems to be the biggest reason why he isn't number one on their mock boards. He is clearly our consensus #1 pick, but is ranked as low as the #10 on some of these "pros" lists. They don't like his arm, his release. He's been dropping for weeks.
I haven't seen him play much, and when I have, I didn't come away thinking he was going to bring the Lombardi trophy home to where it rightfully belongs (not talking Green Bay either).
So, what is the breakdown on his arm?
What does Teddy have that Hoyer doesn't?

Of course we do. Look at all of the threads and anger at our previous FO's who have tried to be patient, who haven't gone out and spent big money on FA, etc... A significant portion of the fan base wants the appearance of trying to win right now.. passing over a QB, even the wrong QB, is going to give the appearance that they are happy with what they have and aren't trying to win... so from a fan PR perspective, that notion that they are trying, is important..

I haven't heard that once about Bridgewater. The biggest knock on him, that I've heard, is that he is too skinny.

I am just saying that every year someone suggests trading down and getting more picks so that we can get a QB next year. That plan has never worked. We had the picks to do it in 2012 and another team outbid us.
The fact of the matter is this. There very few slam dunk franchise QBs available in the draft (in 2012 there happened to be two that we knew of). If a team is drafting #1 overall they likely need a QB. Which means no matter what a team offers them, they likely will turn it down because the QB is more valuable to them. Especially if that QB is a slam dunk franchise guy.
If our front office determines that their is a franchise QB in this draft and they can get him, they need to do it. Whether or not a person trusts the front office's evaluation skills is a whole different question entirely.

I understand the need to win the PR war, but at the expense of winning on the field? I think not. I'm going for the trophy.. I honestly don't care what my neighbor thinks is nice and makes him feel all warm and fuzzy.. I wanna win.

Damn, I thought for sure it was anarchy,, I really should have taken the time to go look. sorry for confusing things
Look cfrs, I'm all in favor of drafing a QB.. I, like so many others, aren't exactly convinced that anyone that is being talked about in the first round is all that and a bag of chips..
Assuming that is true for the moment (since we can neither prove or disprove it) do we reach for one of them, or do we wait until the next round or later?
My point on this is, yeah, at some point we DO need to draft a QB The question is, do we HAVE to do it in the first round? Is that where it has to happen?
As a side note, someone on here posted an article about how source is saying Teddy Bridgewater doesn't have an NFL arm (I'm not sure what that is)
So already, the negatives are coming out about what was supposed to be the cream of this draft in terms of QB's.
Manziel has issues but is also got some mad skills I can't get a handle on his actual height. I've read anywhere from 5'8" to 6'1".. LOL.
don't you just love this time of year

AFC East Bills - E.J. Manuel. Bills hope he is their franchise guy. Drafted in the first round. Dolphins - Ryan Tannehill. Dolphins hope he is their franchise guy. Drafted in the first round. Jets - Geno Smith. Was horrible his first year. I would guess if a better QB came along the Jets would replace Smith immediately (a la Jimmy Clausen/Cam Newton). Second round pick. Patriots - Tom Brady. 6th round pick. Complete luck. No one ever thought he was going to be a franchise QB.
AFC South Colts - Andrew Luck. Franchise QB. First round pick. Jaguars - No QB. They will be looking to draft a QB. Texans - No QB. They will be looking to draft a QB. Titans - Jake Locker. Looking like he is not the franchise guy as he cannot stay healthy. Drafted in the first round.
AFC North Bengals - Andy Dalton. Looking more and more like he is not the guy. Second round pick. Browns - No QB. Ravens - Joe Flacco. Franchise QB. First round pick. Steelers - Ben Roethlisberger. Franchise QB. First round pick.
AFC West Broncos - Peyton Manning. Franchise QB. Was a first round pick, only became a free agent because of a major injury and the they could draft Luck. Chargers - Phillip Rivers. Franchise QB. First round pick. Chiefs - Alex Smith. Near franchise QB. Was originally a first round pick, was acquired for two second round picks. Raiders - No QB. They will be looking to draft a QB.
NFC East Cowboys - Tony Romo. Franchise QB. Undrafted. Eagles - Nick Foles. Possible franchise QB. Third round pick. Giants - Eli Manning. Franchise QB. First round pick. Redskins - Robert Griffin. Franchise QB. First round pick.
NFC South Buccaneers - Mike Glennon. Was okay his first season. If something better comes along they would probably upgrade. Third round pick. Falcons - Matt Ryan. Franchise QB. First round pick. Panthers - Cam Newton. Franchise QB. First round pick. Saints - Drew Brees. Franchise QB. Was originally a second round pick. Became a free agent because of a major injury and they had Rivers to replace him.
NFC North Bears - Jay Cutler. Franchise QB. Was a first round pick with the Broncos. The Bears gave up two first round picks to acquire him. Lions - Matt Stafford. Franchise QB. First round pick. Packers - Aaron Rodgers. Franchise QB. First round pick. Vikings - No QB. They will be looking to draft a QB.
NFC West 49ers - Colin Kaepernick. Franchise QB. Second round pick. Cardinals - Carson Palmer. Old and washed up, Cardinals should probably draft a young guy and get him ready. Used to be a franchise QB for the Bengals. First round pick. Rams - Sam Bradford. Possible franchise QB. First round pick. Seahawks - Russell Wilson. Franchise QB. Third round pick.
So by my count there are 17 franchise QBs currently in the NFL (Brady, Luck, Flacco, Roethlisberger, P. Manning, Rivers, Romo, E. Manning, Griffin, Ryan, Newton, Brees, Cutler, Stafford, Rodgers, Kaepernick, and Wilson). I am saying a franchise QB is a guy who is very good (P. Manning, Rodgers, Brady, etc.), makes franchise QB money (Flacco, Stafford, Cutler, etc.), and/or the team traded a boatload to get the player (Griffin). Of those 17, 12 were drafted in the first round (Luck, Flacco, Roethlisberger, P. Manning, Rivers, E. Manning, Griffin, Ryan, Newton, Cutler, Stafford, and Rodgers.), one was selected in the sixth round (Brady), one was undrafted (Romo), two were drafted in the second round (Brees and Kaepernick), and one was selected in the third round (Wilson). I can be talked into putting Alex Smith and Nick Foles into this group as well.
A potential QB to me is a guy that we don't know enough about, but the teams likes or just isn't good enough to be in the above category (Manuel, Tannehill, Foles, Smith, and Bradford). Four (Manuel, Tannehill, Smith, and Bradford) of those five guys are first round picks (Foles was a third round pick).
It is pretty obvious that the easiest way to find a franchise QB is to draft that player in the first round. Can a franchise QB be found elsewhere? Yes. Is it likely? No. It is not a smart strategy to draft a player in the later rounds and count on that player to be your starting QB right away. If you thought a QB could do that you would draft him in the first round. Even Russell Wilson had to beat out Matt Flynn before he became the Seahawks starter.
Furthermore, if you are hoping to get a franchise QB as a free agent, the pickings are slim. Teams don't allow their QBs to hit free agency (as we have seen with the Cutler, Flacco contracts). If a franchise QB does hit free agency (P. Manning, Brees) it is because there are huge risks involved.

Wow. Point made. Please tell me you didn't write out 'First round pick' every time, and used copy-paste...

I did a lengthy breakdown of QBs the Browns could have drafted a few months back here Outside of guys who fell like Rodgers / Brees and late round lucky guys...the answer was basically Roethlisberger being the only elite qb we ever had a chance to draft but didn't. I did a little math on that list of players (1st round + elite qbs since 1999). 16/37 first round QBs become franchise quality players. 8 out of 13 QBs (61%) that are taken as the first QB of the first round become franchise quality players. So outside of the first QB taken you have 8/24 chance of the Qb turning out...the odds are about half as good at 33% In my mind if they have a guy who is clearly superior to the others they need to do whatever it takes to acquire him. I am guessing that will mean both firsts this year and next years first or second. I prefer Bridgewater to Manziel personally...when the term "cerebral" comes up in a high quality QB I think it bodes better than having the it factor.

If our front office determines that their is a franchise QB in this draft and they can get him, they need to do it. Whether or not a person trusts the front office's evaluation skills is a whole different question entirely.
Never worked?
I am only aware of us doing it once. And, Holmgren scr^%$*ed the pooch by forcing Heckert's hand and making one of the biggest mistakes in Cleveland Brown's History.
I think most data would show that multiple draft picks are more valuable than high-end first rounders.
Is our Franchise guy really there? I suppose we are talking Johnny Football or Teddy. We are all acknowledging that there is no sure fire Luck or Griffin this year.
My position is that I would prefer positioning ourselves for next year because big quarterbacks who can pass and run will be available. This year, we may have to sell the farm to get small, possibly fragile quarterbacks, whose throws are somewhat questionable.
If we get Johnny, I will be excited about this fall. I could be his biggest fan. I agree with many of those who are pimping him. Teddy, I just haven't seen enough of him to comment or feel strongly about.
What if the guy they had earmarked, when they traded Trent, was Mariota?
What if that was the case and it backfired?
Do we just wing our #4 on Bortles because some fans expect a young quarterback NOW!!!!
Do we trade 3 firsts, or two firsts and a second for Johnny or Teddy?
I don't see it.
I am just concerned about getting this right. I've waited so many years, that if I have to wait one more, one extra year that's alright as long as we become a winner and eventually a champion.
This board will have another explosion if they don't get a quarterback this draft. I can easily see a scenario where the best thing they can do is sell, sell, sell.
Getting a quarterback this year isn't the end of the world to me. Screwing up this draft on the other hand....

I understand the need to win the PR war, but at the expense of winning on the field? I think not. I'm going for the trophy.. I honestly don't care what my neighbor thinks is nice and makes him feel all warm and fuzzy.. I wanna win.
And many teams have tried to win without a franchise QB and it's very rarely successful.. it takes a lot of stars aligning in other areas to pull it off. So if you wanna win, get a QB, if he doesn't work, get another one..... and so on until you find one that can play....

We have the ammunition to trade up this year. If our front office determines that their is a franchise QB in this draft and they can get him, they need to do it.
We do not know what will happen next year. What if Winston pulls a Luck and stays in school another year? What if Mariota stays in school another year? What if Hundley stays in school another year? What if all three stay in school? What if one gets injured? What if the first three picks in the draft all need QBs?
There are too many unknowns. If our front office determines that their is a franchise QB in this draft and they can get him, they need to do it.

This is the bottom line as far as I'm concerned.

Josh Gordon weighs in on Johnny Manziel, Brian Hoyer
NEW YORK -- Josh Gordon no longer lives in obscurity.
The ascendant Cleveland Browns wide receiver moved from one interview to the next here at Radio Row before exiting the bedlam for the streets of Manhattan.

Video: » Putting teams on the clock » Biggest question marks in mock drafts That's where we caught up with Gordon, and here's what he told Around The League:
On losing Norv Turner as offensive coordinator: "You know what? It's hard. It's definitely a big loss to lose a guy like Norv Turner, man. He's a legendary coach, man. But whoever we get, I'm sure we'll be fine with it. We're going to work so hard, that regardless of what the offense it is, or who the play-caller it is, I think we're going to have the guys to make the right plays and get us there."
Should Brian Hoyer be the starter? "Man, that's above my head, but Brian's a great guy, great quarterback. I know they probably going to do something in the draft, but we definitely have to get in some more work this season when he's healthy. I know he's coming off his ACL injury. We're planning for the future and I can't wait to have Brian back."
How would you feel about Johnny Football coming to Cleveland? "For the media market and a city like Cleveland, which is real small, I think it would be huge to have him. Great for the city, and the environment, but I'm not really sure who they want. There's a lot of great talent out there. There's a couple guys on that list."
On how the game changed for him in his second season: "Year No. 2, you definitely leave those rookie jitters, you know? The game slow down tremendously. You have a lot more confidence in yourself and really just have that hunger to go out there and prove that you can do it on the biggest stage there is. That's the NFL. The fact that I was given an opportunity to start right at the beginning last year. I took advantage of every opportunity I got after my suspension and I never looked back."
“To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.”

jc: It seems to me that most of the people knocking this year's QBs are the guys who didn't watch them throughout the season. I read posts from most of you throughout the season admitting you haven't watched much college football, but all of a sudden you can determine that this class isn't very good? Some of us did watch these guys all year. Some of us actually made it a point to study them. Teddy doesn't have a strong enough arm? That's false. I will post a short quote from several reports and provide the link. I encourage those of you who really wish to be educated to click on the links and read more about Teddy. It's his mental capacity that excites me the most, but his arm is not a concern. The concern is his slight build. Quote:
Instead of being an athlete who makes plays with his feet, Bridgewater’s athleticism reveals itself when he is passing the ball. He is exceptionally quick dropping back to pass, he strafes comfortably in the pocket and has the arm strength to throw the ball down the field, across his body while running at speed outside of the pocket. http://presnapreads.com/2013/10/18/1731/
Quote:
He has very good arm strength and accuracy with quick movements, efficient mechanics and excellent weight distribution through his delivery. http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/nfl-d...-2014-nfl-draft
Quote:
He always throws a tight spiral, rarely throws off balance, and he is not afraid to fit a ball into a tight window or throw deep. http://mmqb.si.com/2014/01/02/teddy-bridgewater-2014-nfl-draft/
Quote:
Taking the snap from under center, Bridgewater dropped back quickly, looked to his deep left to get Miami's single-high safety drifting and then turned back to his right, sending the pass high and hard to give his 6-foot-2, 209-pound junior the opportunity to make the play. http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/nfl-d...n-rout-of-miami
Again, I encourage people to click on the links and learn more about Teddy. His arm strength is not elite, but it is strong enough. What you will find is that this guy in unbelievably smart, has played in a pro-style offense, has taken many snaps from under center, reads defenses pre-snap and coverages after the snap, has great poise in the pocket, takes big shots and gets back up, is very accurate, and can make plays w/his legs when he has to.
I really think he is going to have a great, great career. I know people like big guys w/rocket arms like Weeden, Carr, Bortles, Mettenberger, J. Russell, etc.............but I prefer smart QBs who are accurate and can buy time in the pocket while keeping their eyes downfield and possess the poise to make the tough throws while facing pressure.

To me, that last quote seems to be most important. For the life of me, I can't remember the last time the Browns had a QB who would look off a safety consistently.

OH Great Googly Boogly,, Did you think nobody but you knew those things so much that you felt the need to type all that out. wow.
I don't want us to pick a QB in the first round UNLESS they have a pretty darn good chance of success. Right now there are questions, lots of questions about every QB being mentioned as a first round choice.
That's not necessarly a bad thing. Remember how many questions there were about Rogers, that's why he dropped so far in the draft. Turns out all the questions were wrong. We need to find "THAT GUY" and if he's not there, take him and I don't care about the round.
Here is what reaching gets you:
Weeden Quinn Couch Phipps
That's just the Browns. I could go on and on. But I won't spend the time typing out the obvious.
Reaching hasn't worked out for the Browns. At least not since the return in 99. Actually, not ever. And not just with QB's.
If the FO and coaching staff feel they have the next great QB in mind and they can get him in the first,, I'm all in. I'm just against trading a bunch to move up a spot or two get a guy unless he's that one in a million, can't miss guy like Payton Manning or Andrew Luck. And I think we can all agree, there isn't one of those in this draft.

Before this football season began I decided to pay close attention to all of the top rated quarterbacks going into the season; knowing the Browns would be in the position they now are.
In addition, to watching way more college games than I have in the past I wanted to become educated first hand on all quarterbacks prospects.
Bridgewater stood out from the beginning. Just looking at the film of the 2012 Florida Bowl game you could see right off this guy knew how to play quarterback.
His stats back up his play but just from watching this guy play this past season you can just tell he has what it takes.
He doesn't rattle. He plays very well when the pressure is on. He never loses sight of what is taking place downfield. He makes good decisions. He knows how to throw the ball. When to drill it and when to put touch on the ball.
In my opinion he is a better quarterback overall than Griffin was coming out. By that I mean he knows more about the finer points of playing the position than Griffin did. Griffin had great potential because of his ability to throw and his speed. However, Griffin was not nearly as skilled at playing the position overall.
There are some things I like about Bortles and Manziel. But straight up I would take Bridgewater over both in a heartbeat.

Yep, you were one of the guys studying the collegiate qbs all year. It just kills me when people who haven't watched them say things like there are no great qbs in this class. How do they know this w/out studying them?
I agree w/you about Teddy. If anyone takes the time to click on those links, they will see the same things you saw. That first link has great pictures that demonstrate exactly how Tedddy reads defenses and coverages, hangs in under pressure, looks off the safety, and throws accurately to a moving receiver. Those aren't just words, there is proof in the pictures.
There is another really good article that compares Teddy to Mariota. I didn't link it because it didn't really address the arm strength thing that much, but it is an excellent article and I encourage people to read it. It's a very good break down.
bone, I didn't like Manziel that much at the beginning of the year. I didn't like how he was throwing too many picks and bailing out of the pocket too early, but the more I watched, the more the kid grew on me. I had to change my early on evaluation due to how much tape---and games on TV---of the kid.
Bortles? I was the first one to bring him up on the board. He was my sleeper. I gave him an initial 3rd round grade, but predicted he would probably shoot up the charts. I now think he is higher than my initial grade, but I don't think he is quite as good as the other two guys. I think he actually needs more developmental time than the other two guys.
Not sure if I am right about any of them. It's all opinion, but I do think it is wise to educate yourself before making definitive statements. You've done that. Some other guys like steve have, as well. We'll see how it shakes out.

Right now I think Manziel and Bridgewater are the best QB's. But, after watchibg film of Blake Bortles I have to admit I am very intreged.
Bortles has a physical skill set very similar to Andrew Luck. He does not have the mental make up with the QB position that Luck had coming out of college.
What I would look at with him is; what is his work ethic? Is he a 1st person to show up last to leave type? A gym rat? What is his ability to learn? Is he a film room junkie?
If the answers to those questions are Yes, I would strongly consider him as my top QB. He has better size than the other 2. Just as good running ability. Bridgewater has the best arm but not by much over Bortles and Manziel. His ceiling could actually be the highest. He would need to answer those questions above because he is not a fully developed product yet compared to the other 2.
At this time I perfer Manziel but the more I watch Bortles the more and more I like him.
