Look out, Nick Saban. (Screenshot from PowerPoint)
Don’t let anyone ever tell you video games can’t take you far in life.

Christopher McComas, a system integration specialist at Marshall University, is an avid college football gamer. He has “dominated” Madden on Sega Genesis and “dominated the recruiting scene” on NCAA Football for Playstation, via GrandForksHerald.com.

Based off of those incomparable credentials, McComas decided to apply for the head coaching position at University of North Dakota under the “chuck-the-pigskin” philosophy.

Despite no affiliation with UND, McComas, in a letter to the athletic director, explained why he deserves the position.

“Mr. [Brian] Faison,

I would like to express to you my interest in your now open position for head coach of football at the University of North Dakota.

Currently, I work in IT at a college in West Virginia, but I have many years of experience with football, starting with attending my first Marshall University football game when I was three years old. In the past 30 years, I’ve only missed a handful of Marshall’s home games, attended many road games, and all of their bowl games.

All the while I played various football games including Madden on Sega Genesis where I completely dominated with the Bills and Thurman Thomas. Seriously, was he a beast on the game, or was he a beast because I was a football genius controlling him? I then moved on to a Playstation gaming system and purchased NCAA Football every year and put together several programs that completely dominated the recruiting scene and college football, winning several national titles with Marshall University. I took them from a decent Mid-American Conference school on the game to a perennial national power that makes Nick Saban look like a chump. One year, my third-string quarterback left school early to enter the NFL draft. He was a first round pick. Boom.

My football philosophy is basically an attacking one. We’re going to give AIR RAID a whole new definition. Theoretically, how many times do you think a team can pass in a game? Challenge accepted. We’re going five wide, chucking the pigskin all over the place. Never punt. Onside every time. Chip Kelly will be calling me to learn my offense. We will put on an exciting brand of football, we will pack them into the Alerus Center night in and night out, go ahead and blow the roof off that place, and add about 35,000 seats to that place.

I would love to speak with you further regarding this opening, and what I can bring to UND, putting UND back on the national map and making NDSU our (b****).

Thanks,

Christopher McComas

PS – I prefer Coke to Pepsi, so go ahead and fill the fridge up in the head coach’s office with Coke.

Just in case the AD was having any lingering doubts about who should become UND’s next coach, McComas added a nine-slide PowerPoint to supplement his impressive resume.

McComas's brilliant idea opens up so many possibilities. Even if he doesn't get it, and let's be honest, he's basically a shoo-in, why not have an NCAA Football 2013 tournament between the top candidates for a given position? Who wouldn't watch Nick Saban button-mash-it-out with Mark Dantonio for the Texas job? James Franklin vs. Gus Malzahn? Come on, that's made for TV gaming.

Too bad this guy doesn't coach defense. I'd take him over Luke Fickell.

The really sad part about this is that I'm convinced there are guys out there playing a game in the living room while dressed in his PJ's thinking he is capable.. Did I mention he's probably a 40 year old guy

Exactly. I think it's cool that he took the time to go to these lengths as a fan. Good for him!

How much difference is there in preparing a game plan and outwitting the other side between actual and online???? Granted there is much more to coaching then being able to call plays. Teaching, technique, building boys into men, developing chemistry.... I would take a chance on the guy and bring him in for an interview. But never for the HC job. Asst. Coordinator could be in the realm of possibilities.

HC have come from far crazier places... i.e. MIami Heat- video room

I don't know how much difference there is between preparing a game plan and outwitting the other side between actual and online. NEITHER DOES THIS KID.

Because online you're playing against other non-professionals. HUGE difference!

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Not judging the guy so much as judging the posters that think it's a remote possibility like Paco for instance.

Him, I'm making fun of.

LOL,, I got a friend that lives out in Vegas now (used to live here). He fancies himself a musician. No, he can't play an instrument (any of them) and he can't read music (not a note) but he does have some computer software that can help him generate sounds.

So he's recorded and posted some songs (if that's what you want to call them) online.

I once asked him to let me hear some of his music. it was noise. thats it. Just noise. I told him so and his response was, Yeah,, isn't it amazing?

I've noticed on Facebook that he's now professing to have a band of guys that make electronic music (noise) and they may go on tour.

wow is all I can say. I'll see if I can find some of his stuff. I promise you, you'll want to turn it way down.

I took the Browns to 6 straight superbowls in Madden 11' while working the cap like a genius. Being as it was the Browns and that is next to impossible I think I am over qualified for this position or I would have sent my resume in.

The game has changed a bit since genesis. Both in RL and the game.

What's really funny about that is, there is someone somewhere out there that has a similar story and believes he's qualified to be a HC in the NFL.. Either that, or he's won his fantasy league for 3 years in a row and now fancies himself a Guru...LOL

That kind of stuff isn't limited to just football and coaching. For example, it seems like some people think they are economists, climatologists, physicists, nutritionists, etc. and know more than all of respective people who have spent their entire lives working in those fields. This is true even when the person arguing has absolutely no education or experience in those respective fields other than a few things they heard on a talk show or pulled up on Google. Just read or listen to just about any political discussion.

As far as some gamer being great at Madden and thinking he is actually qualified to coach football, I would like to think that person doesn't exist but I know better than that. But that doesn't apply to anybody here and the OP was obviously a joke.

Just think about something that you are very knowledgeable and very skilled at. Then think about what the average joe thinks about that topic.

For example, maybe you are really into poker. You have a good idea about starting hands, aggressive positional play, betting strategies, ranges, etc. Then some expert who watched a couple poker shows on TV tries telling you that what you are doing is wrong.

basically...

I will readily admit that I couldn't be a coach, but I'm pretty certain I could be a GM and assemble a team that wins 4 games a year.

Sounds pretty easy. Just surround yourself with coordinators that know what the heck they are doing, watch a bunch of videos on coach pep talks and use same words the coach used in his speech (just remember to insert the teams name that you are playing, not the one in the video). In practice when you hear one of the coordinators yelling at a player…just looked pissed and yell basically the same thing but in different words. In practice and in games…stand on sideline and just looked ticked with a game/poker face.

In games, when OC or DC gives you a suggestion….act like you are putting a lot of thought into it, then say…alright we will try that. When you send your staff on the recruiting trail, have the staff give you feedback on the player in Madden ratings.
