I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere else, but I guess that Gordon was in a fender bender on his way to the stadium. He wasn't driving, and checked out OK, but it's possible that he was banged up a bit. That could have played a part in his play ..... who knows?
It shouldn't, because it was reported to have been a minor accident ..... but people do react differently.
I do have to say that I really hate the whole "The poor defense was gassed" excuses people make. A defense always has the ability to get themselves off the field by making a play. Not only that, but there have been defenses who have horrible TOP because they score points themselves and give the ball back to the opposition right away ..... as happened Sunday.
Anyway, the Bears got the ball back with 1:29 left in the 1st half, on their own 34. In 4 plays, they had a TD. The defense just fell apart. They weren't tired at that point.
They had something like 11 plays in the 3rd quarter. We started the 3rd quarter giving up the INT for the TD. We then had a 10 play, 85 yard drive that took over 5 minutes. The defense had not yet seen the field in the 2nd half.
The Bears then had, roughly, a 5 minute drive, that ended with the Ward funble recovery for a TD. Obviously the Bears then got the ball right back.
They then had a 3 and out.
We then had a drive of almost 4 minutes.
At that point, the Browns defense was very rested. They faced 11 Beards offensive plays in the 3rd quarter. That's not putting an unfair burden on the defense.
Going into the 4th quarter, the Bears opened up with a 6 play, 95 yard TD drive in 2:33. No blame on the offense for that one.
The offense then went 3 and out. That's going to happen once in a while.
The Bears then went 36 yards for a TD like the Browns defense didn't even take the field. They were put into a tough situation, with the Bears getting the ball on the Browns 36, but 6 plays later, 4 runs, 2 passes, Bears TD.
The Browns then had a 5 play drive. The Bears got the ball at their own 22, and went 78 yards in 5 plays, capping the drive with a 40 yard run.
The Browns defense had folded like a cheap folding chair at that point.
In the 2nd half, the Bears held the ball for .....
4:40 2:33 3:28 1:44
and 59 seconds to end the game.
In other words, the Browns actually held a TOP advantage in the 2nd half. The Browns defense should not have been "worn down".
In the 1st half, because of the way the turnovers came, the Bears had 6 offensive drives to only 4 for the Browns. (plus the kneel down right before the half) It makes sense that the bears would have held a TOP advantage given the way the game unfolded. The Browns offense was not effective, but the Bowns defense really can't claim "tired" as an excuse.

Good to see the brown jerseys with white pants, not that it helped.
Edwin Baker showed good vision and burst, and caught the ball well. He added over 80 yards of offense and scored a TD. I wish we'd used him more.
Bad day for Jason Campbell; he was late on some throws and wild high on others. He missed connections on a big 3rd down pass to a wide open Josh Gordon. It looked like it would have been a long gainer because no defenders were nearby. I don't think he is a cold weather QB.
I think I've seen enough of Davone Bess. He dropped another 3rd down pass that would have converted the first down. I'd like to see Greg Little in the slot receiver role next year, if we draft someone to play WR2, because he gets good YAC and is fun to watch run in the open field.
The Defense started strong and it looked like Cutler was in for a long day - he looked Weeden-esque in the first half. Even the TD pass to Jeffries was jumpball / prayer, that should have been a 3rd pick for Gipson if he had timed his jump better. By the way, nice push off by Jeffries to clear out the CB before he jumped. The ref was right there watching it, and still no flag. Annoying.
Speaking of the refs, we saw the return of the "uncatchable ball" on what could have been a long interference call for Gordon and the Browns. There are no uncatchable balls when the Browns are on defense ... but I'm whining.
Can't explain another second half fold by the D, except to think that the Bears adjusted to what we did in the first half and we didn't have a Plan B. Oh well, another Sunday.

Sure you can. It just isn't going to tase good.
I look back on the coaching and can't really point to many decisions made that would have somehow turned results around in a big way had they made another decision.
As for the run game, the new kid looks decent. Bottom line is we had no run game heading in to the season. Some thought we did having Richardson, but time has proven we didn't. He isn't getting it done at Indy either. We lost a nice option in Lewis.
We have had a pachwork of backs. If you toss some of their stats together it equal a decent NFL back, but you know as well as I it doesn't work that way. You need a primary guy other teams have to account for in the gameplan. As it is, other teams might not know what to expect so they run more base run D which might inflate the results of guys like Oggie because other teams know he isn't likely to kill them on any given day.
Sign Ben Tate. Draft a back in round 2...maybe Mason or the kid from OSU..add that to Lewis and the best 1 or 2 of the rest as see how that works.

I might be in the minority, but I'm not enamored with Tate.
We can find our own Zac Stacy in round 5. I'd rather do that in the later rounds.
I won't be upset if we sign Tate, but I won't be upset if we don't either. I think he's an upgrade but I also think we can do better.

Tate's situation reminds me of the Michael Turner situation in San Diego a few years back. A backup RB with starting quality. My guess is Tate will demand a hefty price but maybe Houston may need to be thinking about letting the other RB walk instead. Adrian Foster has exhibited a history of injuries recently and Tate has the fresher legs.
It would be interesting to see what Houston does here.

Man, what happened to Bess? He has completely fallen apart. He was never a burner type receiver, but he was reliable beyond belief. He caught everything, and had a real talent for positioning himself to get 1st downs. It's like he has forgotten everything he ever knew.
Agreed. 1-2 Games then he got hurt, and that was it. It would be interesting to know the Dolphins thinking about him when he was there.

j/c: I saw some things that no one else saw or won't admit to seeing. Wonder why??? --Our WRs were awful. People are putting all the blame on Campbell, but I saw Gordon slow down 3 or 4 times on what should have been completions. One turned into an interception. Cameron gave a putrid effort on another pick. He also ran lackluster routes all day. Little gave up on another incompletion that should have been a catch. Bess dropped another pass that wasn't that tough of an attempt. --Hadedn didn't even want to be on the field. They showed him on the sideline. He was miserable. It's like it was too cold to play. Makes me wonder if he'll resign w/us? --Speaking of Haden, his play was poor today. I think he is no longer playing at a Pro Bowl level. He might make it because of the flawed system, but he was getting owned. --Joe Thomas and Alex Mack had good games. Joe handled Peppers one-on-one and did you see those two leading Little on the long screen? The OL gave Campbell time to throw. --JC is very nonchalant. Some people see it as calm, I see it as boring. He didn't play bad. He didn't play good. He was just okay. Not sure how people are saying he has a noodle arm, though. --The overall coverage was pretty bad. I don't think Ward sucked, but why are people saying he played great? He made a nice play on the first interception and had another nice play in coverage. That is two more than normal, but that doesn't make a game. He was late almost all day. The fumble return? LOL........he was getting ready to do his infamous bail out tackle where he usually whiffs. He ducks his head to the side, lowers his shoulder and dives towards the guys lower leg. Bending down like that actually put him in perfect spot to pick up the fumble and keep running. --I liked what I saw from Baker. Low center of gravity. Quick cuts. Some power. And he was the one guy who played w/passion. --I thought it was a mistake to not pressure Cutler more than we did. Only rushing 4 all day gave Cutler time to throw. He and his receivers are too good to give him a lot of time to throw. I wouldn't have blitzed him all day because Cutler can burn the blitz, but I would have put more pressure on him and hope to force him into more mistakes. --The offensive game plan was okay, but I would have run Baker more. --This is sad to say, but we may have to change the culture. I read something that makes me think we have too many malcontents on this team. Before players start pointing fingers at other people, perhaps they should look in the mirror, because other than just a couple of players, there was plenty of blame to go around. We might be forced to let some popular players go in order to correct the mind-set of this team.

Based on his productivity in Miami and what it took to get him....my guess is Miami thought he was average at everything, undersized, and expendable.

I believe I read that that the FO is big into sabermetrics.
I believe Bess passed their 'numbers' test.
I do think Miami thought he was expendable, but I really thought this was going to be one of those trades that worked out for both teams. He was expendable to Miami but valuable to us.
I believe Bess deserves criticism, but I also believe he is better than he's played and is just having one of those seasons...an anomoly of sorts. I think it was a good trade and Bess will turn it around next year, IMO.
I'm willing to give a guy who has done it consistently before for many years the benefit of the doubt here.

True, but he caught the ball a lot. Now he cant even catch.
He is expendable NOW!

Sure I get that and a better Davone Bess makes a better Browns team in 2014- that's all that matters. And I also doubt he gets released in the offseason so that another reason to hope he improves.
Also, a better QB situation could make ALL receivers perform at a higher level.

You know, that might have been uncatchable but the refs usually just call holding these days anyway on that, why was that not holding? Did i miss a rule change?

It should have been holding or some kind of illegal contact.

I am curious, though.
Are you saying you did not see our WRs wuss out on several throws? I watched the game w/a group of people who are not Brown's fans and they all caught it. They kept saying, "Do your receivers always play like ____________?"

I just wanted to see Gordon more. I don't particularly care that we lost. From a Draft perspective, I'm actually relieved that we lost, but I wanted to see Gordon get at least 126 yards yesterday.
Oh well.
Browns is the Browns

completely agree that the WRs Trex'd a bunch of throws (especially in the 1st half). They didn't trust Campbell or the routes, which is an issue in itself. Regardless, they cannot do it.
Also, Gordon was shown to be open over and over again over-the-top and Campbell was making the read. Really got frustrating that he wouldn't give him a try a few more times.

Late to the "party", but hardly and exciting one. I watched the game, but I wasn't focused, didn't look for little things on replays etc. Even missed some plays while watching other (more exciting) games. I guess I just do not care anymore for this season at this point, because, well it's pointless and even if we take those "moral" wins, it'd mean squat, as history has shown. Some small, more general observation: - the OL is actually one of the few, maybe the ONLY, unit that is getting better and better. They did a really good job pass blocking and the run blocking is improving too. We do not seem to have missed a beat with Pinkston playing LG for Greco. - where's the pass rush? the lack of it is quickly becoming THE disappointment of this season. It has regressed during the season. We were promised "improvements" as the system gets in. So, that either means the players struggle with picking up more of the system or the system isn't all that, or a mix of those - Gipson had one of his better games, even though his INTs were of the not to lose variety, but he was in good position and even made some stops at the LOS…well and then the brainfart on the crucial TD. No wonder he never attacks the ball in the air. If he can't at least deflect and position himself for that floater, better not try other passes, lol. Really a shame, but somewhat the epitome of our D play this season - maybe it's because I don't pay close attention anymore, but I am somewhat disappointed by Taylor's disappearing act lately, same goes for Kruger. Didn't see them the entire game. Just looked at the stats: they have combined for ONE total tackle, hmmm. - Skrine is incredibly overrated around here. He si a much better nickel-CB than no2. We still need an outside CB, preferably with size. Still mourning bypassing Rhodes in the last draft, or Mathieu in the 3rd. McFadden and Poyer do not look like solutions to problems right now. - Baker dude looked like he wants it. Very refreshing play, but I think it highlights more the non-play of other Browns, especially at RB. Not sure if he has what it takes, but I'd make him the go to guy. He wants it, give him a two game rehearsal. - Bess is making more money than Gordon and Cameron combined - Bears ran a lot of those reverse fake HB roses didn't they? Enough to make Mingo look silly countless times and me doing face palms. I don't think it was a coincidence they ran them to his side most times as he loves to overrun plays and isn't the most disciplined. My nickname for him will be Odie (the dog from Garfield) from here on out until he starts to smarten up. He still does everything with his fastball. Learn a breaking pitch dude. - on the bright side, at least we improved our draft slot

I agree. Hopefully the offenses are just faster at picking up the stuff we were doing than we have been at adding new stuff. From listening to coaches, its very hard to add a lot of new stuff once the season starts, which is why I don't look for a tremendous amount of new stuff once the season starts.. what I do look for is the base stuff to get a lot better, and I'm not seeing that either.
We have been extremely lucky as far as injuries go, especially on defense, I expected more..

That's his name. Couldn't think of it this morning. Which means I am not a OSU homer, and I think he is good. I like mason as well. Hell, maybe take both! JK
Hyde is the bigger type back, which we lack. Lewis is a smurf type back and Baker is solid, but not a pile mover by any means.

The disappearing act is because he was only on the field for 29 of 67 plays. I don't understand it. Everyone on DL rotation, minus Kitchen and Bryant, saw more plays by a rather large margin.

Thanks, didn't realize that. He needs to play more. Either he's in the coache's doghouse or he lacks stamina (or passion in "those" games). There's a "problem" somewhere. We can't have our 1st rounder playing just 40-60& of snaps. Bad enough that Mingo is shaping up to be that type of player. If the same happens to Taylor = not good. We need our talent to play more, we need 3 down players to show for top picks. Here's PFF's take, which re-enforces my view of good OL play: https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2013/12/16/pff-reaction-blog-week-15/- The three highest graded players were Mitchell Schwartz (+4.8), T.J. Ward (+4.6) and Joe Thomas (+4.3) - The three lowest graded players were Jason Campbell (-4.8), Shea McClellin (-4.4) and Jon Bostic (-3.3) - Of his 39 attempts Jason Campbell only threw three times outside the numbers to his right and completed only one – an interception caught by Zach Bowman and returned for a TD. - After a slow start to his sophomore year Mitchell Schwartz is bedding in nicely. In his first two games he allowed 18 QB disruptions. That’s more than he’s allowed the last six weeks combined with zero in this game. Cleveland: Three Performances of Note Campbell’s Clunky Day Sometimes you see Jason Campbell and think he could be a perfectly viable quarterback at this level – not exactly good, but good enough to win games the team should win. Other days you see the guy that turned up in this game, a scattershot quarterback who just couldn’t connect on anything more than 10 yards down field. On multiple occasions he had Josh Gordon open against some very loose Chicago zones only to miss him. Usually the misses weren’t by much, but those are the margins at this level between viable and bench-warmer. He only attempted 11 passes of 10 or more air-yards and just three were complete, including the late touchdown to claw the game back to within a score. Before that (somewhat desperation) play he had hit just two passes over 10+ yards, neither of which were over 20 in the air. Though he eventually tallied 273 yards passing, his passer rating of 67.6 is a far more accurate assessment of his performance, as is the -4.3 overall grade he got from us. Flawless Bookends Well, not quite, but the duo of Mitchell Schwartz and Joe Thomas combined to allow just a single, solitary hurry on 82 combined pass blocks. That hurry was a marginal one as well, with Schwartz having a perfect day in pass protection, his first for the season. Thomas continues to underline his dominance as the single best pass-blocking tackle in football, controlling his side all game long, and making a few impressive blocks in the run game. Schwartz also had a good day in that regard, and the +4.8 grade he earned was just a hair below his season-high, and goes a long way toward righting the season that started so inconsistently. This performance is especially impressive because the Browns ask more of their tackles than most teams, routinely dropping the quarterback 9-10 yards deep in the pocket, putting both players on an island far more than the league average. The WR Corps Remember when Davone Bess was a sure-handed receiver? It’s been so long that I’m struggling to, but I know there was a time. He added to his tally of drops in this game while hauling in just one of the three passes sent his way. Josh Gordon also struggled in this game, dropping a pass and seeing a few more fly agonizingly past his reach on errant throws. He was thrown at ten times and came up with just three of them for 67 yards, 43 of which came on that late touchdown throw with the game all but decided. It was Greg Little who had arguably the best day among the receivers, catching four of the six passes thrown his way, though his route was a large part of the problem on Campbell’s pick-six play. Little ended up with 68 yards from his four receptions that featured some nice run after the catch play. Game Notes - Of 39 pass attempts, Jason Campbell threw the ball right of the numbers just three times, completing none of them. - Josh Gordon’s average depth of target in this game was 18.9 yards down field. - Chicago’s D righted the tackling ship, missing just two tackles in this game and: https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2013/12/16/refo-bears-browns-week-15/PFF Game Ball
The result went against them, but their performances deserve this much – OT bookends Joe Thomas and Mitchell Schwartz split the game ball.---------------------------- With that, I'm ready to blame Schwartz' early game struggles to the crappy RG play (esp the stupid Cousins-experiment) next to him plus struggling with adjusting to Norv's "system". I would go into 2014 with him as our starting RT, maybe draft a mid round insurance (need OT depth anyway), but he's playing good again, not only in this game. Interesting to read that we ask more of our OTs than most teams, re-enforcing my opinion that Norb just doesn't care when it comes to protection.

ward had a very good game.
the LB's? nice so much.
haden? total let down today, but it doesn't help he got injured toward the end.
campbell stuck up the field. period. did you see how bad that one INT throw was? i give the other int blame on little, but all in all, campbell sucked.
the WR and cameron did campbell no favors, but that doesn't exclude the fact that there were times, and they showed it during the game, where gordon and cameron was wide open, and campbell either didn't read it, or hesitated to throw the ball, and he did that ALOT.
i said it in another thread, i want weeden gone as much as the next guy, but he would've launched those balls down the field, and would've gave our WR and cameron a chance to make a play.
if thats one thing i would swap campbell out with weeden, is weeden's ability to trust his WR to make a play.

- maybe it's because I don't pay close attention anymore, but I am somewhat disappointed by Taylor's disappearing act lately, same goes for Kruger. Didn't see them the entire game. Just looked at the stats: they have combined for ONE total tackle, hmmm.
The disappearing act is because he was only on the field for 29 of 67 plays. I don't understand it. Everyone on DL rotation, minus Kitchen and Bryant, saw more plays by a rather large margin.

Something is definitely amiss with Taylor. I read the staff likes the depth behind him and that it keeps him fresh. I'm calling BS on that.
Stuff like this makes it tough to be a Browns fan. At the beginning of the season, big things were expected from Taylor - both in on field performance and on field / off field attitude. And he started the season delivering on that.
Then poof ... major drop off. What the hell happened? Guy is too talented for this. Only in Cleveland ...

Wow.... Why all the hate? I don't see the logic people use with Paul. It seems to be "oh, not 100 sacks so therefore he is a crappy player/wasted roster spot". The above logic is flawed heavily. Need proof? Go back and watch Paul and let his film tape demonstrate his production, and not a stat column. And now ya'll going to throw Phil Taylor in the same boat? ya let's just get rid of all these guys. I am sure there are several, and I mean SEVERAL teams that would DIE to acquire either of those two players from us...

Not sure where you were going with your post, but I don't want to get rid of Taylor.
I am just disappointed in his lack of snaps and lack of impact with the snaps he does get ... especially after starting out the season on a high note and setting the tone for this D.
I think something is not being reported in regards to Taylor. Something doesn't seem right.

Is there an echo in here? 21 points given up in under 12 minutes. I knew this game was lost on the second bears drive of the game. We gave up 4 third downs. Two of them being over 11 yards. If it had not been for a tipped end zone pick. It would have been another red zone failure. This team has THE WORST 3rd down D I have ever seen. It is sad when ( last year) you are not excited for a stop on d when the other team is in third and 23 or something like that. And you know not to get happy. Because you are a Browns fan. They will give up that first down almost EVERY time. And to top it all off. We also have the worst red zone D in the league. Bend and Break Defense My brother laughed at me when I told him the Browns would be lucky to win 5 games this year after opening the season 0-2. He said it was a "knee jerk reaction". I said "Just wait for it...." Yep. You guessed it. CLEVELAND DEFENSE?!! YOU SUCKED ALL MONTH LONG!! That is all.
Einstein could not even fathom the mathematical improbabilities of the Browns woes.

It had nothing to do with our D. Cutler is the greatest QB alive and no D on the planet could have prevented that from happening!
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Let's not be so hasty, you're forgetting the half-dozen or so come from ahead losses at the beginning of the year.

Is there anywhere that breaks that snap count down by 1st half/2nd half? Forte had 46 yards in the first half, which means he picked up 81 in the second. I seem to recall Big Phil eating blockers and allowing DQ and Gipson to step up and makes plays near the LOS. IIRC, he even fought off a double team to make a play for little to no gain. I wonder, as you guys do, why he wasn't on the field more. He might not make the big plays himself, but it sure seems like he takes enough of the load for other to.
