NFL ready to release long-awaited schedule

By John Clayton
ESPN.com

Although the schedule isn't everything in determining the fate of an NFL team, it means a lot more than coaches want to admit.

On Wednesday at 1 p.m. Eastern, everything about the 2007 NFL schedule will be revealed. The schedule release day is becoming more and more like an unofficial holiday every spring. ESPN and The NFL Network each have two-hour specials. Fans have opportunities to study their schedule and map out their falls, particularly if they plan to travel to a few road games of their favorite teams.

Those who are traveling spring to their phones in order to book hotel rooms, particularly for some of the hard-to-get hotels over busy fall weekends. Other fans rush to book air travel. Teams scramble to get the right hotel locations.

From the competitive standpoint, how the schedule breaks down determines a team's chance. Last year, for example, the Colts had three AFC South home games scheduled during the first five weeks of the season. Win those games and Indianapolis could take early control of its division. The Colts won the games and eventually won the Super Bowl. Cold weather teams look for the chance to get four home games in the final six weeks of the season. Warm weather teams hope for an extra September home game to wear out a visiting team not used to heat and humidity.

The newest twist involves the additional night games and flexible scheduling. The eight Thursday or Saturday games given to The NFL Network plus the post-Thanksgiving ability of NBC to move Sunday day games into the night also play a big impact. NFL players and coaches love consistency, but the weekly challenge of playing a day game one week and a night game the next tends to mentally wear on a team.

Those stories will be unveiled Wednesday.

John Clayton is a senior writer for ESPN.com.

Im just hoping that the Browns go ahead and play the Bengals both games by week 9... cuz Chris Henry be doing the Browns.. lol..

I wonder if the Browns and Steelers will play during Christmas again..

and Im also interested in that Dolphins game, when Joey Porter will return to Cleveland not a Steeler... should be a great game...

We havent had a Monday night game since what? 03? against the Rams. If we didnt get on after going 6-10 no way we get one after being 4-12.

I've never understood the excitement surrounding the schedule release. We already know the opponents, just not the order. Heck, we know our opponents for the next few years (except for the two records based games per year).

Yes we find out about if we get some night games but we should already know the answer to that (bad teams get little or no primetime games).

I'm more interested in which date is the Bears preseason game...which I think we could figure out as is.

In my case I start filling Sept and Oct dates now. I need the dates so I can schedule vacation time to go to the 4-5 games I will attend.

It never hurts to get your hotel and any airline reservations booked well in advance as well.

By the end of the day I will have my games selected and hotels booked. Restaurant reservations can wait a while.

MNF doesn't have the same mystic it once had, the networks have really devalued it to a great degree IMO,,, But I doubt that the Browns would be considered a big draw nationwide at this point..

When the networks did all the changing around of things,,,moving stuff from Monday to sunday,,, didn't that allow for something that if a team wasn't expected to be good, but turned out to be good,, can't they move some games to primetime.... I thought there was something like that that was now allowed....

I'm most looking forward to either Ravens game... With Lewis now a Brown, I'm hoping he'll do to them what he once did to us.... 500 yards in two games,,,,,I'm drooling over that prospect... (no, I don't believe it will actually happen, but I can dream)

I like the squealers or the bungles Thanksgiving week.

Question.. am I right in thinking these are our opponents this year?

HOME
Buffalo
Miami
San Francisco

AFC South

AWAY
New England
NY Jets
Arizona
St. Louis
AFC West

AFC WEST would mean at San Diego twice in 2 years? Or do I have this all wrong?

It's a great park to watch a game no matter who you root for.

It usually works out about every other year....it didn't happen last year so the odds are pretty good it will this year.

No. The Browns were unwatchable last season. I doubt any network wants to highlight such horror.

I think it was against the Broncos.

I'm glad there aren't as many home 4pm games as last year. Driving home to Columbus really sucks for late games. And I'll likely be in the Springfield area by the time the season starts because my wife took a new job at Wittenberg, so it'll even be a longer drive Just waitin till the house sells to move.

Stillers on opening day. That'll be fun.

Well, if the Browns have truly improved and it shows on the field, then this schedule is very winnable. By that, I mean, we could actually see a .500 season, maybe better but things would have to go better than expected and that's not our luck. However, .500, I believe, is very reachable. As long as we can get some solid play from the Offense. *Holds Breath*

No kidding I wish they had broken this up a little better...

Nov 25 Houston 1:00pm
Dec 2 @Arizona 4:05pm
Dec 9 @N.Y. Jets 4:15pm
Dec 16 Buffalo 1:00pm

Besides Oakland, our 1st half is absolutely brutal

My thoughts exactly!

For a team changing as much personnel as we will be - getting a chance to start off with a little momentum would have been a big positive.

Nope - right into the meat grinder. Staying anywhere even close to .500 through the first 8 games (and staying healthy against some very physical teams) is going to make or break the season.

just clickin, Folks, there is no sense in crying about how tough the first half of the schedule is, if I remember correctly, many were saying the whole schedule last season was brutal. So the way I see it, we've been given an upgrade. Yes, they could have divided the games a bit better but if we are going to be any kind of winning team then we need to be able to handle the challenge from Day 1.

Just think, if we can get by the brutal part of the schedule with little-to-no injuries and with a decent record, shoot, we may have a chance at a wildcard.

Good LORD, we play the whole AFC North at home BEFORE October hits! I'm not whining about a tough schedule, I just want it spread out a little more evenly. I want to savor the wait for those big matchups.

Oh well, the schedule's here. It's all set in stone . . .

The flip side of that is if we can manage something decent, the second half of the season offer a chance to make a push for the playoffs.

I will go to the SF game in the hope it is a game of meaning.

from ePlaybook:

'07 schedule released
Of course the Browns are opening the 2007 season at home -- they always do.

The intrigue comes from their Week One opponent: The Steelers. And if that's not enough September drama, consider this.

The Bengals and Ravens also visit Cleveland Browns Stadium in the season's first month.

The NFL's release of the 2007 regular-season schedule Wednesday brought the Browns a not-so-subtle message: Be ready to play immediately. A year after they didn't win a division game for the first time in franchise history, three of their first four games come at home against AFC North opponents.

It's the Steelers in Week One, followed by a visit from the Bengals in Week Two. The Browns' first road game comes in Week Three at Oakland and is followed by a visit from the Ravens in Week Four.

ah, so i guess we're going 1-3 in the first month of the season. . .
