At LB I am really hoping for Spikes. I have a feeling Arthur Moats will be signed.
I really want a CB opposite Haden. Grimes is too old to warrant a huge contract IMO. I would prefer Verner, Shields or Thrummond. I thought Munnerlyn played well last season to. I just hope we address that need this offseason. Nothing against Skrine, I thought he played OK. I just think hed be a better Nickel CB.
I hate to say it but I think I would let Ward walk. I think it would require too much $ for a S IMO. Throw the cash at CB. I would go hard at Delmas or Bethea, both I think would cost less than Ward, and move Gibson to SS. I was impressed with Gibson last season.
Shore up the D in free agency and fix the O through the draft. Resigning Mack and extending Haden would be my #1 priorities.

While Shields is a good player, I would prefer a bigger corner as both Haden and Skrine are on the smallish side.

5'11 and 190 is good size. What Seattle's doing is just freakish and out of the norm. Shields shut down Josh Gordon too.

I probably should have looked up how big he was before I made that comment. If he really is that big then I am all for it. Having three guys who can cover almost anyone would obviously help our defense immensely.

I'd love to get Byrd. We can then run a Cover 3 which is what Seattle runs. It's a very simplistic scheme designed to be balanced against the run and pass. It's taught at the High School level. However, you need elite talent to run it at the NFL level because it is so simple schematically.

I would love to have Byrd, but I would hate to lose Ward. What would really stink is if let Ward go thinking we would get Byrd and then we don't get Byrd and end up with neither.

Talk about a pipe dream ...... Imagine re-signing Ward, and bringing in Byrd and Shields.

Talk about an understatement. That would be a great start for Farmer. I don't think it will happen ..... but if it did .... man!

Two different skills sets aren't they? Ward being the SS and playing close to the line with Byrd being the FS more valuable in coverage.

I ran more Cover 3 than any other coverages when I coached high school. You're right about the high school thing and you are correct about Seattle. They have Earl Thomas, the best safety in football. He covers a lot of ground out there.
There is no doubt you need a FS who can get from sideline to sideline when you run Cover 3. What's interesting is Pettine's comments on his safeties being interchangeable. Gipson would seem to be the better fit w/Bryd than Ward. Ward does not cover a lot of ground.

From where I sit the 64K question about Byrd is does he want the cabbage or does he want to play for a playoff team.. Or does the Pettine connection exist?

I'll attempt to answer.
This is his second contract. Most good players play in to a 3rd contract, but the second contract is usually the money contract. These guys are now in their peak earning years for a football player other than maybe a QB. My guess is money is going to be the biggest factor. He still has time to play in playoffs. Lost money on this contract will never be regained..but, that is just my opinion
As for the Pettine connection. No doubt they have a connection. The real question is if it is a good one or not? If it is, that probably isn't enough to bring him here if the money isn't right. If it isn't a good one, that would probably be enough to keep him away....or us not go after him.
I haven't read anything negative in their relationship but I also haven't been looking for that type of information. Maybe some of our fellow Dawgs know something. I am sure a few of them are semi Bills fans because they live in the TV market just like I would call myself a semi Titans or Falcons fan because I live in their NFL TV market. I have no reason not to like them, so I follow them even if in a very casual way.

Yes, I'm getting far more Titans info than I ever have before being in the Nashville area now.

The only thing I would add is that the media loves selling negative news. I would think that if the relationship between Pettine and Byrd were strained, we would have seen it expounded upon. But who knows?

Joe Buscaglia: Jarius Byrd Thinks World Of Mike Pettine Joe Buscaglia of WGR-550 in Buffalo joined 92.3 The Fan to talk about his report that the Bills had made a substantial offer to soon to be free agent Jairus Byrd. WGR’s Bills beat reporter said that while the team is making a late run to retain the safety, they are not expected to use the franchise tag on him. Buscaglia also addressed if Byrd’s affection for Browns head coach Mike Pettine will translate into the safety signing in Cleveland. http://cleveland.cbslocal.com/2014/03/02/joe-buscaglia-jarius-byrd-thinks-world-of-mike-pettine/

While I think we have a good chance to sign Jairus Byrd there is one other team that might have a leg up on us: Quote:
On January 10, 2014, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced Gill Byrd as cornerbacks coach.
Byrd joins the Buccaneers after having spent seven seasons with the Chicago Bears, working as defensive quality control (2006), assistant defensive backs coach (2007) and adding safeties coach to his duties (2008-12). Prior to his time in Chicago, Byrd worked in St. Louis as a defensive assistant (2003-04) and as an assistant secondary coach (2006).
A four-time All-Pro and two-time Pro Bowl selection, Byrd played 10 seasons (1983-92) with the San Diego Chargers, retiring as the team’s all-time leader in interceptions (42) and interceptions return yards (546), both of which records he still holds. He retired in 1993 and was inducted into the Chargers Hall of Fame in 1998.
Byrd returned to the NFL in 1999, working as the Green Bay Packers executive director/player programs and community affairs for three seasons (1999-2001).
A standout at San Jose State, Byrd and his wife, Marilyn, have two sons: GilI Jr., a three-year letterman at New Mexico State; and Jairus, a three-year letterman at the University of Oregon and a three-time All-Pro and Pro Bowl selection with the Buffalo Bills whose 22 interceptions since joining the league in 2009 are the second-most in the NFL.

Thanks for the link! The only thing in the interview that I saw as any reason for concern, is how Byrd is tired of the constant turnovers in the coaching staff in Buffalo. Seems like a mirror image of what he may see here.

we apparently were meeting with Mack over the weekend. no announcement is probably not a good sign. I would hope that we tag either he or Ward today. I don't see why you leave bullets in the gun when we have $61mil in cap room. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap2000000...and-mend-fences

I honestly believe Mack should be, or have been, priority #1.
And yes, it would seem as though we would have heard something by now had they reached agreement.
But hopefully we're wrong about that.

Likely cause the gun doesn't wish/want to cycle any ammo from Cleveland Browns. They likely want to move to another gun chest/cabinet.
It doesn't look good though. Seems like Alex just has no intentions of wanting to be here, but I admire the front office (seemingly anyway) for pushing hard to get Alex to feel comfy enough to undergo yet another regime change with a losing team. Seems like it'll be a tag or it'll be a good bye.
In terms of Ward, I don't know why nothing has been done yet, unless of course Pettine would prefer his own safety in Byrd and looks to replace the strong safety with someone else (Gipson, draft, who knows).
I'll be shocked if 4pm passes and one of the two players aren't tagged...

As much as I've thought that...
I wonder.
Mack has been a part of an offense that has never been a very good run blocking group. He isn't a powerful center, and is a very good pass blocker, but doesn't get great push. I wonder how much he contributes to that, or is it our bad guards...
His durability has been amazing...and his toughness is the stuff of fables.
As much as I like him and think he is a great center...can we do better? Can we get a different center that is a better run blocker? Is he a DQ version of OL? Good not great?
Gonna be interesting.
