YOU know there are dozens of them...cliche's that are untrue, dumb, or just don't make a lick of sense.
We hate many more than one, but perhaps we can limit ourselves to just one until everyone has had a chance
My most hated cliche:
"QB X will be a winner in the NFL because in college...he just wins games."
***Gordon, I really didn't think you could be this stOOpid, but you exceeded my expectations. Wussy. Manziel, see Josh Gordon. Dumbass.***

Cool topic! I'll go with, "They just wanted it more." Yeah, the losing team DIDN'T want to win.

For QBs-
"He's a winner!"
"He has 'it' you know?"
"He's a gamer!"
"His will to win."
"He wanted it more."
Just a bunch of lazy narratives.

This...anything correlating Football to war drives me insane, because of the lack of respect it shows the men who have experienced war. Football is football and war is war, not vice versa.

Thank You! These were the 2 I came to post. I've been hearing about a certain QB having "IT" way too much for my liking round these parts lately.

"We" from fans when talking about sports. YOU didn't - never did - never will do anything for the Browns, Buckeyes, Cavs, Indians etc. etc. So stop. It drives me crazy.

"They're in fourth down territory, they have to go for it."
The announcer will say that for a losing team on their own 20 with 1:00 left and 4th down.
I thought "4th down territory" was the on the opponents side of the field between the 45 and 35. It's too close to punt and too far to kick a FG...so you kind of have to go for it. It has nothing really to do with the scoreboard or time left in the game.
And yes, like someone else said, "Team X wanted it more." Worthless comment.

I know what you're saying, but I'm okay with it. WE buy tickets, WE bleed Orange and Brown, WE wear the gear, WE dream our whole lives for a winner, WE chear them on and WE like to think we're part of the team (or that the "team" includes the owner+GM+coaches+trainers+players+fans).
I even went through a period where I would ask, "what position do you play?" after someone said "we" when referring to their team.
I'm sure the people know they aren't truly a part of the team, so their usage of "we" is more about the community that surrounds the team (the city, state, country, alumni, etc.).

Neat topic! This is for us: "We practiced really well this week." Apparently rehearsing a loss. From sportscasters (Aikman especially) who launch into a second-guessing about goal line calls. Just endless drumming up controversy what isn't there. Sorry, not a snappy one-liner, but that and out or not on a catch, end zone ot otherwise, just wears me out.

That one touches on the, "We need to win the last (meaningless) game(s) so we go into the offseason with momentum." As if that energy actually carries over the 8 month offseason. When actually what it's done in the past is screwed us out of the top draft QB choices.

"110% effort" always annoys me.
"These two teams do not like each other."
"Game of inches."
"That defense has been on the field a long time." (Psst, so has that offense.)
"Throw out the records when these two teams play."
"This kid came to play."

I do it only because it's easier to type "we" than spelling out "the Browns" or "Cleveland" everytime I'm referring to the team. Anyway, if someone's shared the misery of being a fan of this team for the last 18 years, I think they've earned the right.

It's a lot easier than typing "The Browns" over and over again and eventually that sounds like you're a distant observer. In reality, we're all here (or most of us are here) because we love the Browns. The 'we' talk doesn't bother me at all.
Football cliches that I can't stand to hear...
Pretty much anything having to do with 'playing the percentages', when defending a decision that demonstrably is NOT playing the percentages.
Along the same lines, things like "playing it safe" when it really means making a gutless, weak decision, or "you've got to take the points [kick a FG]" when it's 4th and goal at the 1 yard line, with really no urgent reason why you really need to take the points.

I have to disagree. A lot of fans stick through everything, especially us. Ownership, coaching changes, free agency. We are the only consistent part of the Browns franchise. We have every right to use we.
What I hate is people who use the term and aren't from there. Steeler fans who have never step foot in Pittsburgh are a wonderful example.
I agree with a lot of these that you guys have listed.
I don't know if it's a cliche but it's absolutely nails on a chalkboard for me when I hear an announcer say "clock it" in terms of spiking the football to stop the clock.

We battled. Or.... they battled.
Heard that too many times after they "battled to a loss".
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

I hate the term "skill positions." Like it takes no skill to play offensive line? "You've got to run to set up the pass." Maybe 30 years ago, but it's become quickly outdated. "We're excited to announce ________ as the next coach of the Cleveland Browns. We've done an exhaustive search and we're sure we've found the best man for the job." - every Browns FO since '99.

"Out-kicked his coverage" makes it sound like the punter screwed up, but it could mean your punt cover guys are too slow. This one has actually migrated to everyday life, like when you see some doofus with a great looking woman, someone will say "he out-kicked his coverage.". Always cracks me up.

I hate hearing a head coach or star QB respond with...
"He's a really talented QB, I have a ton of respect for his abilities, and if we don't play our very best we will have an impossible time beating him."
...even when asked about a player such as

Something that bothers me is when people talk about how "lucky" a champion was. Almost to the point of downplaying the accomplishment. It's extremely rare for a champion to just thoroughly dominate competition without catching a few lucky breaks.

All the inane sideline interviews tend to be different types of horrible.
"What were you thinking when that big play happened?" And the responses are nothing short of vanilla... "Well, I saw Receiver A and threw him the ball", "I wasn't thinking, I was reacting"
"Why are you losing the game?" The other team is scoring more points...
Aside from injury reports, I don't think there's anything more useless..

I should have noted teams that win a lot.
Anyone who claims to be a Browns fan right now is 100% a legitimate fan.
I'm talking Yankees, Red Sox, Heat, Lakers, Duke basketball, etc..
I mean whatever, it's a free country and you can root for who you want, but it's annoying when people who aren't from LA say "we" when referring to the Lakers.
