and for 2014, OLB is a need. imo anyway, but the guy plays ILB anyway, right?

With Pettine, I think it's safe to say we'll be a base 3-4 'hybrid' defense again, so with Groves, Mingo, Jaball and Kruger (most of which was transferred from left to right and right to left so they're versatile) - why do we need another OLB?
We need inside linebackers. Correction, we need cover inside backs as DQ is decent to even good in coverage, however is getting old and Roberston is uhh, extremely poor in coverage and teams exploited him beyond the point of seeing it almost play after play.
We need a weak inside linebacker before we need anything else in terms of our lb'ing core, IMO!

i agree with our current line up...for pass rushers.
i just strongly think OLB, while i personally wouldn't take one at #26, i can still see reasoning if we did in fact take one.
of all the LB's we have, the only one even decent in pass coverage is DQ. after that?....
i wouldn't be mad if we took a beast all around OLB at #26 that excells at pass coverage.

I tried one of these and I think it got a little outta hand.....I pulled an Eric Mangini and traded down at least three or four times from my original draft slot....I drafted on NEED for the most part, but it was fun to do.
Round 1 Pick 15 (PITT): Johnny Manziel, QB, Texas A&M (B+) Round 1 Pick 26: C.J. Mosley, OLB, Alabama (A) Round 2 Pick 3: Bishop Sankey, RB, Washington (B) Round 2 Pick 9 (BUF): Cyril Richardson, OG, Baylor (A-) Round 2 Pick 11 (NYG): David Yankey, OG, Stanford (B-) Round 2 Pick 14 (PITT): Brandin Cooks, WR, Oregon State (B+) Round 2 Pick 19 (CHI): Odell Beckham, WR, LSU (B) Round 3 Pick 7: Shayne Skov, ILB, Stanford (A) Round 3 Pick 9 (BUF): Bryan Stork, C, Florida State (B+) Round 3 Pick 19: Carlos Hyde, RB, Ohio State (A) Round 4 Pick 6: Dion Bailey, FS, Dion Bailey, FS, Southern California (A) Round 4 Pick 13 (NYG): Jimmy Garoppolo, QB, Eastern Illinois (A) Round 4 Pick 17 (CHI): Chris Davis, CB, Auburn (B) Round 4 Pick 27: Stanley Jean-Baptiste, CB, Nebraska (C+) Round 5 Pick 5: Greg Blair, ILB, Cincinnati (F) Round 6 Pick 4: J.C. Copeland, FB, LSU (A-) Round 7 Pick 3: Jeff Budzien, K, Northwestern (B+)
I love the value of Mosley that late too. If he is around even if he isn't a huge need i'd do it. Also getting Manziel getting him two guards, two receivers and two running backs. That is a huge upgrade to the offense.

Looks like you traded down 4 times, getting a 2nd each time (and sometimes more) and still got someone I can see us taking at #4 .... hard to argue with that. That's a crapload of rooks, though.

Did the "On the Clock" simulation, here's my try at the "First Pick" version.
Round 1 Pick 4: Johnny Manziel, QB, Texas A&M (B) Round 1 Pick 29 (N.E.): David Yankey, OG, Stanford (B) Round 2 Pick 3: Jordan Matthews, WR, Vanderbilt (B-) Round 2 Pick 30 (N.E.): Chris Borland, ILB, Wisconsin (B+) Round 3 Pick 7: Arthur Lynch, TE, Georgia (B-) Round 3 Pick 19: Kelcy Quarles, DT, South Carolina (A) Round 4 Pick 6: Donte Moncrief, WR, Ole Miss (B+) Round 4 Pick 27: Marqueston Huff, FS, Wyoming (A) Round 5 Pick 5: Jeremy Hill, RB, LSU (A) Round 6 Pick 4: Deion Belue, CB, Alabama (B+) Round 7 Pick 3: J.C. Copeland, FB, LSU (A)
I've seen tape of Yankey pulling, that sold me. Borland seems like a London Fletcher type,a little undersized but above average instincts. Quarles, offers versatility all over the D front. Lynch upgrades the depth of the TE position. Jeremy Hill is a AFC North type of RB, if he can be drafted in the 5th that's great value. If the team gets the QB it wants at 4, and they have some decent offers for the 26th pick maybe they take that trade. In this simulation I was able to do that and still get the OL and a good WR early.
Pettine will want to add some defenders. Given the defensive collapses that happened late in games defensive depth needs to be addressed.

Not really sure what you see in Hill ? Would prefer Hyde in the third if he is still on the board .. Love the Yankey pick !

To my eye yanked looks overrated. He's great at the second level and when moving, but he's not good enough pass blocking to be considered a LG in the NFL imho. I stopped watching when I saw him allow a handful of pressures in the first half vs Michigan State. He's probably going to end up being a RG-only like DeCastro. Their FB, Hewitt, and C Wilkes otoh looked better than their "ranking" in the same game

I wouldn't say I was in love with Hill. I actually like Hyde better but felt there were other needs that should be addressed so I wouldn't go as high as round 3 on a RB. As far as Hill goes, he does remind me somewhat of Leveon Bell. He's played against some very good SEC defenses and was productive. Hill is a down hill, lol, runner. No nonsense. Comfortable running behind a FB, I also drafted his backfield mate, Coleman. I see him as part of a RB committee not a 20-25 carry per game feature back.
If it's true that the team is interested in Ben Tate I would rather look for a younger back on a rookie contract that will cost less, fulfill the power runner role and have less wear on him.

just posted in another thread, but after Jackson, Martin, Yankey (who will require high picks to get), the guys I like most are Sua-Filo and Linder.

Filo has been rising lately among the pundits. Which is actually a good thing really. More OG will drop if some of them rise. I really hope we target Jackson and Filo. I think they have the most upside of the group. Filo especially is a really high character leader type. I'd use our 2nd on either of them and Martin if he fell.
OGs are hard to project. The top OG last year was only adequate and two supposed 3rd rounders were near all-pros. Long and Warford(called it) had the highest upside and hit it early.

Lee is projected to be a star WR. Troy would remain in front of Bucannon until he decides to retire. Watkins had a good showing at the Senior Bowl. I like Zumwalt, he plays a little out of control been flagged a lot. Wouldn't mind him on our defense as a ILB to bring some attitude. Janis has good size and speed, they say he's a body catcher though. Will Clarke, never saw him play scouting reports are inconclusive. Kinda sounds like a Bruce Irving style pass rusher. This actually seems like a plausible Steeler draft. If so I hope they all bust

At the Senior Bowl, Will Clarke looked a lot stronger than Bruce Irvin and he's about 60 pounds heavier. I think he'd have to put on a few pounds to be a 3-4 DE, but he's a really tall and long dude.

Deal
I have to say that I am unimpressed so far with the PURE G-class.
Jackson was the best on tape. Most balanced run/pass and still has the highest upside left. He looks like the only top 50 worthy OG to me. He dominated Ego Ferguson vs LSU and frustrated Pagan/Robinson vs Bama. He only had a couple of bad plays and both came late down by two scores when he got lazy or was tired out by the rotation.
Sua-Filo was horrible in pass protection vs Stanford and ASU against mid/late round specs. He's stiff. Mauling RG at best. Would not have him on m top 100.
Yankey ranks somewhere in between. He's better at the second level and overall as a run blocker than Jackson, but he also struggled in pass pro.
Have not watched Steen yet or any of the OTs that are considered NFL Gs, but form the pure one's only Jackson looks like a Plug and play LG to me. Yankey could become one maybe, as he has the athleticism and upside. Richardson and XSF would get eaten alive if you start them day one and are RGs only. I would not draft those in the top 4 rounds and probably not at all.

Wow, just finished watching Steen vs LSU and he was the nutz. I've seen no mistake. He completely took A.Johnson out of the game and played super smart, situational football. He lined up at RG, but looked more like a LG and he could probably handle C too, as he wasn't strong at the POA, but rarely lost ground to Johnson and even pushed him around winning the leverage battle more often than not. Very impressed. He's a top 50 guy based on this game alone.
He got a 3rd round grade from the advisory board last year and got shoulder surgery a month ago (torn labrum), but if he clears medically he could be a steal in the 3rd/4th area. The kind of OL you win with imho

People sometimes ask me to mock what I want. It wouldn't look that much different from what I actually mock.
Free Agency:
•Release Jason Campbell and Greg Little. I thought about Bess and Weeden, but it's cheaper to keep them.
•Legarette Blount, RB, New England - A big power back for in the redzone.
•Geoff Schwartz, OG, Kansas City - Filled in admirably for the Chiefs at guard. He signs with us to play with his little brother.
Draft:
1. Sammy Watkins, WR, Clemson
1. Jimmy Garoppolo, QB, Eastern Illinois
2. Stanley Jean-Baptiste, CB, Nebraska
3. Bishop Sankey, RB, Washington
3. Jon Halapio, OG, Florida
4. Chris Borland, ILB, Wisconsin
4. Jeff Janis, WR, Saginaw Valley State
5. Pierre Desir, CB, Lindenwood
6. Jacob Pederson, TE, Wisconsin
7. Jeremy Gallon, WR, Michigan

I like your FA "plan", but would HATE that draft.
I like Watkins, but a WR2 at 4? He does not offer much WR1 upside imho
Garoppolo has next to no upside left. He is what he is: a smart QB with a limited arm and a huge step to take from his College level to the NFL. He's not a first rounder imho. Simply lacks the upside.
Jean-Baptiste has some bad tape. He's big and all potential at this point. Translation: a project.
Sankey is ok, but there's better value at RB in this draft imho
Halapio played pretty uninspired the games I watched him. Harrison, the center next to him, was better. There's MUCH better value at OG.
The 4th/5ht are ok, but doubt that Desir lasts that long..

I'm just gonna have to say I disagree with everything you said about our draft picks. Sammy Watkins gives us another explosive option that will attack the ball. Disagree about Jimmy and upside. Jean-Baptiste upside and talent is absolutely worth a 2nd rounder.
Not trying to be mean, but better value is a bad cliche. Sankey and Halapio are not overdrafted and we can debate who will go where.

I tried one of these and I think it got a little outta hand.....I pulled an Eric Mangini and traded down at least three or four times from my original draft slot....I drafted on NEED for the most part, but it was fun to do.

Just curious...but since Cleveland already has Pitts 3rd....who did Pitt give you a first and second to trade up for?

After watching the Super Bowl, we will see how much of a knee jerk reaction we get... Let's see if all of the experts elevate a bunch of defensive players in their mock.

I don't know if we'll see much change in the evaluation rankings, but I could see a few teams rethink their draft stratgey. We just hired a defensive minded coach. His input might bring a few more defenders than some of us might have imagined.

I've done the simulator many times, and have even gotten Bridgewater at 4 a few times, but that hasn't happened lately. Maziel is always there at 4 and is even still there when I trade down to 6. I'm always able to get decent receivers in later rounds, and always manage to get Carlos Hyde at the top of the 4th if I want him and sometimes at the bottom of the 4th. If he's gone, Jeremy Hill is always there in the 4th or even 5th. I have the hardest time finding a CB because of other needs but sometimes Verrett is there in the second round or I end up with Ross Cockrell late in the draft. FS is also problematic, as I either end up taking Clinton-Dix with the second first or Dontae Johnson at the end of the draft. I also usually try to take Su'a-Filo or Yankey at the bottom of the first or top of the second if they're there.
Lately, if I want Bridgewater it takes a heavy trade that includes both 1st rounders, the second and the top third to make it happen. Then I can usually make a trade later to pick up more picks if I want to.
Here's my latest involving a trade to get Bridgewater but was unable to get an OG:
Round 1 Pick 1 (HOU): Teddy Bridgewater, QB, Louisville (A) Round 3 Pick 16 (NYJ): Chris Borland, ILB, Wisconsin (A) Round 4 Pick 7 (OAK): Kelcy Quarles, DT, South Carolina (A) Round 4 Pick 15 (NYJ): Jimmie Ward, SS, Northern Illinois (A) Round 4 Pick 27: Robert Herron, WR, Wyoming (B+) Round 5 Pick 5: Jeremy Hill, RB, LSU (A) Round 5 Pick 14 (NYJ): Devin Street, WR, Pittsburgh (A) Round 6 Pick 4: Ross Cockrell, CB, Duke (A) Round 6 Pick 5 (OAK): Dontae Johnson, FS, North Carolina State (B-) Round 7 Pick 3: Chris Boswell, K, Rice (A)
I don't love the idea of trading up, but this draft is something I could live with and graded out third best behind Miami & the 49ers. It's a combination of need and BPA, going BPA if I didn't see a decent pick that filled an immediate need.

We do have holes on D, so I really hope we attempt to fill them. Between the draft and FA, there should be plenty of talent available to get us a FS, a complimentary CB, an ILB and a lineman or two if we want and still be able to get our QB, RB, OG and a couple WRs.

Curious as to what other Dawgs think about this. Seems like it could be a stellar move putting him across from Gordon. Almost JulioJones/RoddyWhite-esque . . . But I go back & forth on it.

Not at 4, not with all our other needs. I think there will be too many other receivers available later in the draft that will give us size and ability on the other side of the field to spend that high of a pick on Watkins. I do think he's a little smallish and that makes me wonder about durability. I also think he might be a bit of a dropper in traffic, which I am totally sick of.

I like Watkins, but a WR2 at 4? He does not offer much WR1 upside imho
Curious as to what other Dawgs think about this. Seems like it could be a stellar move putting him across from Gordon. Almost JulioJones/RoddyWhite-esque . . . But I go back & forth on it.
There would be no way that I would take Watkins at #4. I'd pull a Vikings and let the time expire first.

i'd love to have watkins at 4.
imo, he has the potential to be a #1. and that would be Gordon and Watkins on the outside.
remember, Atlanta has 2 #1's on the outside, and they decimate teams.
why not us?

Atlanta decimated nothing this year at 4-12 and their 1-2 tandem didn't quite put up 1300 yds. 2 #1's on the outside is no guarantee of success, and even when the Falcons do manage to have a decent season they choke when it counts. I'd rather spend our first pick on a QB and our second first on a CB, OG, FS or ILB. IMHO, I don't see Sammy on this team in any possible scenario and think it's just a pipe dream to even consider it.

well, whats the numbers when they were healthy. atlanta was hit with the injury bug this year.
besides. my comment is based off if teddy is already taken. if Teddy is there, that isn't even a discussion. if not? i would take watkins at 4.
it's all opinion, man.
