how you figure we don't have the pieces for 4 down lineman?

Well, I think we could if we gave everyone enough time. We have the talent to run either, but the major question would be "Can Mingo and Kruger play as 4-3 OLBs and would this be more beneficial than the 3-4?" I don't think that it would be more beneficial than the 3-4, because I think Kruger, Sheard and Mingo need to be rushing the QB more than playing zone/man.

i think Kruger can be decent as an all around OLB. he can rush, just needs to work on coverage.

Sheard already proved he can be a solid DE. i think Mingo can be a solid DE. we have plenty of NT. our LB's needs wouldn't be so great if we went 4-3. DQ of course has that spot locked up, and remember Groves will be coming back.

Overall it was a good press conference but I thought it was rather telling that for this press conference that they used a podium for a single speaker (Pettine) so Haslem and Banner didn't have to be asked any questions about the search, the turndowns, etc.

They didn't even hold the presser in the normal press room....they went out to the practice field just to have that format.

Silly.

I doubt Banner will appear in front of the press in regards to the search at this point. He doesn't have the stones to face the questions.
As to the hire... Meh. At this point any coach is just a place holder until a franchise QB is drafted. If we draft a QB and he fails we'll be doing a coaching search again in 2-3 years.
As far as his attitude and fire, that's great, but it's all for show unless we win. Count me unimpressed by screaming and yelling on the sideline. Either you can coach or you can't. Dungy and Cowher were polar opposites yet both won. Hell coach Vermeil cried like a schoolgirl... and won championships. Get a great QB and tears or screaming slobber will win championships.

Wish ClevelandBrowns.com would post a link to the presser video already.

I don't know what to say about this hire, so I just won't say anything at all until we see whatever product he puts out on the field. They say he got a five year deal, so that's a big commitment.

We don't wanna be paying seven former Browns coaches money to not come into work here in Cleveland, do we? Start this entire process again. It's Browns Town though

The people he is considering for OC suck... this is terrible.

Usually when you end up hiring a guy low on your list and late? It doesn't end up good.

We all hope things work out for the best. But to say I have my reservations is an extremely mild way of phrasing it.

Much like I feared would happen, people refused to come here and we ended up having to settle for a guy nobody else wanted or even considered interviewing.

Oh well, here we go again!

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

As far as us needing to be more mentally tough... I wonder if this is something he was told to say or if its something he did some research on the last couple days as he was being interviewed or... I wonder if it's one of those things that is sort of known around the league... Because he seemed to hit that and a few other hot buttons that Browns fans have about this team...

he's lived football his whole life. pretty sure the hot-buttons are the same at every level, for every team. he knows how to say them in a positive way.

now, hopefully, he knows how to fix the issues too

Um. Yeah. Sure. 5 years.
He better hope that the FO finds a QB or he'll never see all five years.

Interesting point... The Browns spent exactly 4 more days hiring Pettine than the Steelers did hiring Tomlin... Tomlin was only a DC for 1 year, had not interviewed anywhere else for a HC job and was viewed as a "nobody".... The Steelers inverviewed 5 other people before getting to Tomlin....

But when you are the Steelers those things look well planned and calculated, when you are the Browns they look like a circus... I wouldn't put too much stock in how all of this played out...

Why would Haslam or Banner want to have a press conference about a new head coach get hijacked by questions of incompetence and about how terribly they did it.

They should only be focused on the new head coach.

Banner and Haslam were smart to keep the focus of the press conference on where it belongs...the new coach. period.

Just Clicking. I don't read the board but a few times per year now. The Factory of Sadness has beaten me down. I had to visit today. I assumed that if there were any place that could have rose colored glasses and make this look good, it was this site. I was right. Very positive comments.

From a distance... an only my opinion and speculation...
This is horrible. Pettine was not the 1st choice. Not the 2nd choice. He was simply the guy that wouldn't go away. Anyone with a pulse withdrew their name from consideration.

I don't know how the front office can, with a straight face, say that this is what they envisioned when they fired Chud.

Maybe Pettine will succeed. Maybe he will fail. We will wait and see together. My initial guess...

Next season (2014), the team goes 7-9. We hear how the team has made substantial growth. We need to get over the hump. We have to be patient, great things are coming.

Then (2015), the team returns to form and we finish 5-11. We fire Pettine. We start over.

The cycle has happened over and over.

Well, I think this solidifies that we're not going to have a 3-4 D next year.

We'll have a 4-3 or 4-6 defensive scheme.

Doubt it. Pettine ran the 3-4 with the Jets. He didn't have the pieces to run a 3-4 with the Bills, so he ran a 4-3 or dime. But we don't have the pieces to run a 4 linemen down scheme so he'll most likely have us do 3-4 variants.

Well, we can do a lot of both the 4-3 and 3-4. I do agree that we'll probably do a lot of the 3-4 variants, but we'll also see a good number of 4-3 and variants too.

I don't know a lot about Petine. I have read about him and he sounds like the type of coach that I like.

He's tough. He has the respect of his players. He has changed his schemes to fit the talent. He can beat the crap out of probably every other HC in the NFL.

We'll just have to see how the team responds to him.

Hiring coordinators is going to be huge. That could be the rough part.

Well our 4-3 defense would probably look like:

DE: Bryant
DT: Taylor
DT: Rubin
DE: Sheard

OLB: Kruger
MLB: DQ
OLB: Mingo

Two major concerns are the OLB's.

But it does sound like we're keeping the 3-4 which is really good as I didn't see a major problem with it other than the other ILB spot. I think the problems with our defense stem from lack of trust with Horton. Most DC's switching philosophies keep their complicated schemes and blitzes close to chest until their second year.

I'm not sure why the 1st 2nd choice thing is a big deal....what they did was interview..interview and interviewed.....

Can you guarantee if they hired choice 1..2..or 3 that it would have been the best thing for the team...

It's like having your mind set on buying a specific car...and you wanted it real bad because you knew it was the right one for you...

Then you went out and test drove it... and realized it wasn't at all what you thought it would be...So you drove a few more till the right one fell in your lap...one you thought you would never be in...

This guy has heart and wants to be here... Lets see what he can do... before we say what he can't do...

Does anyone know who first choice was?

I just landed a job 5 months ago where my employer had a candidate identified and I interviewed and blew them away.

You may have a first choice but until you talk to them they are still mostly unknown.

Could be the case here.

That isn't what happened here. The car dealership looked at us and said, "We're sorry, you cannot buy this Porsche. Let me show you these gently-used Chevettes."

Chud wanted to be here.
Pat Shurmur wanted to be here.
Eirc Mangini wanted to be here.
Romeo Crennel wanted to be here.
Butch Davis wanted to be here.
Chris Palmer wanted to be here.

Not saying he will or won't workout. History would lean more one direction than the other.

I am an hour south of Columbus. I do not know what the mood is in Cleveland. I am surrounded by fans of many different teams. The general consensus is that the Browns are a radioactive landfill that no one wants their name attached to.

Not really....Pettine's first interview was some time ago. If he blew them away, why wait another two weeks and ask for two more interviews? The "give away" in this search was that it "heated up" once Gase officially withdrew his name....then all of a sudden Pettine was talked up. Coincidence? I doubt it...

That said, I dont care too much if he was plan a,b or c, although it does look somewhat incompetent. All my current angst is directed towards the owner/FO. I just hope they don't jerk him around with their small guy complex egos like they did, well, pretty much their entire career anywhere else. Let the guy work and support him and DO NOT tell him what to do

I am having a hard time buying this "first choice" and "second choice" thing.

Who were those guys? How do you know they were desired more than Pettine by the Browns?
