Schottenheimer's teams seem to improve when he arrives, and decline when he leaves. I think that shows that he is a capable coach.
My question with him would be developing a young QB. Maybe pairing him with a bright young QB coach would be a solid answer.
As usual, these statements about sum up my thoughts about the man. A solid QB coach and that would be a pretty nice combination! Actually, that would be a fantastic outcome in my eyes!

I don't know why I am even getting into this as Schottenheimer is not even an option but. . .
The before he arrived the Jets had the 31st ranked offense. Schottenheimer had the 25th ranked offense in his first year, 26th in his second year, then 16th, then 20th, then 11th, then 25th. Is that an improvement? Yes. But they were only good one year.
The year before he arrived the Rams had the 31st ranked offense (Sam Bradford played only 10 games). Then Schottenheimer came and they had the 23rd ranked offense (with a full season of Bradford, followed up by last season with the 30th ranked offense (Bradford played only 9 games).
He stinks. He is the Rob Ryan of offensive coordinators. Big name, no results.

If Shanahan is worth talking too so is Schottenheimer.
The Browns should seek out the best possible candidates. Talk to those who show an interest. Then select the best guy.

sorry, just skimmed your post. I see you want Rob Ryan as DC and Brian Schottenheimer as OC.

He has had Sam Bradford (former #1 overall pick) when he was 25 and Mark Sanchez (former 5th overall pick) when he was 23.

Cleveland now talking to former Redskins OC Kyle Shanahan, according to multiple league sources.
John Keim, ESPN.com Redskins Reporter
I don't know how everyone else feels but I would love to have Kyle Shanahan. The guy was a genius just last year and then RGIII gets hurt and now he is a dunce. And the Redskins still had the ninth best offense in yardage.
I think it would do him some good to get him out of the Shanhan/Kubiak bubble.
I believe I read somewhere that if we hire someone else as offensive coordinator then Loggains will be our QB coach. I think that is also a pretty good situation.
I like it, and he isn't tied in to old school offense the way Callahan might be, though Callahan could fill a dual purpose, he is heald as a top notch O-line coach.......but....I was a O coordinator who can go with the time and not insist on some stale old WCO>
Oh, forgot to mention Dowell Loggains. I catch several Titans games a year.....I have been impressed with what they do. Locker getting hurt was a big blow to the team....I think this guy could be a wildcard candidate.
I am a old guy. I like older head coaches, but younger coordinators. You let the experience set the course, you let the young guys stay fresh and with the times. Blend the best of age and experience, and youth and enthusiasm.
A 35 year old coach and 50 year old coordinators usually won't work. Flip it.
We now have a 48 year old coach.....stick a few younger guys at coordinator. If you feel your 1st time HC needs a guiding hand with a experienced head coach, make him the QB coach or asst to the coach. You can give him a title of meaning that elevates to to at least that of a coordinator...or above...Sr. Coordinator of both O and D who also mans a position coach duties.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn. GM Strong

I would love Shanahan as OC. He runs the West Coast Offense and the zone blocking run game his Dad loves.... We might actually be able to run the ball....
That's why he isn't a good fit and won't be hired. We threw the ball 42 times a game last year, you can BET we'll throw it even more this year.

you haven't really been wrong about anything. i guess as far as the team goes, not a good thing.

Callahan could simply 'retire' for the season, take no money from Jones and be done with it. Jones wouldn't own his contract after next season anyway. He could simply 'retire' for a season and not assist the Cowboys in any way.
Unfortunately, thats not how contracts work. The guy cant just 'retire' for a year and then reappear a year later free to go where he wants. He is still under contract for that one year. Unless they worked out a settlement of some kind. It would be complete chaos if this was legal to do.

Agree with the development side. I could live with Shanahan the younger. I want to make sure we had a solid veteran presence (not Weedy or Campbell) to develop the kid as well on roster. We should take great pains with great talent. But we will see. But OC before QB selection. First things first.

Maybe, but it could be that he doesn't want to rehash old news.
I mean, who would he bring in as HC that had prior experience.. Whisenhut? Schwartz? Schiano?, Shanahan?
Of those, Shanahan had success when he had Elway. Not really a whole lot of consistent success without him. Whisenhut (as it was pointed out to me) was actually pretty successful until he didn't have a QB, then things went south.
There is a theme to this, without a QB, any HC can be on a short leash.
I'm not particularly happy with Banner or Haslam at the moment, but I don't think him not hiring an experienced HC has anything to do with him wanting to be a control freak about what goes on on the field.

I would love this hire as well.
The kid grew up with X's n O's.
This would be the first time not under the thumb of his Dad or Dad's protege Kubiak.
I think he would like to be inventive with his play book take the good from the two mentioned above but put his own label on things. He also has the experience of a QB who can run and throw.
jmho...hope he doesn't leave Berea!

None of the coordinators thrill me, but I think Shannahan is probably the best candidate. He is young and he has experience. He's even had some success.
It's very important that we get a good OC in here due to Pettine's expertise being on the defensive side of the ball.

Maybe you are right, but in the end, it's little more than your opinion, which appears obviously biased against Banner.

regardless, I think it pays more mind to Kubiak the OC vs. Kubiak the HC

I'd argue the exact opposite. He's had good QB play his entire career up until last season.
Elway Griese Plummer Schaub
That's not Weeden, Quinn and Anderson by any means.

He offers some experience and familiarity with Shannahans playbook. May seem to make a bit more sense to have Cousins over Campbell / Weeden to help develop a rookie QB if their plans are to pick one with one of the first 2 picks.
Would you get Cousins then possibly pick Watkins or Clowney or wait to drop back to get the guy they have in mind..

Based on what Cousins has done in the NFL so far, I'd give nothing more than the 4th it cost the Skins to draft him.

The Texans were a pretty good team in 2011 and 2012. In 2012 they somehow managed to stay in the playoffs (and win the division) with T.J. Yates starting 5 games and Matt Leinart starting 1. They also had a pretty good offense for Kubiak's entire tenure besides his first year (which was David Carr's last year).
Overall he went 61-64 over eight seasons. That is including this past season when the wheels fell off, Matt Schaub took multiple giant dumps on the field, and Kubiak collapsed on the field. If you take away the disaster of a 2013 season, Kubiak's record is 59-53 which I think accurately describes him as a coach. A little above average.

NADA.... Cousins is a lateral move with Hoyer - I don't see that as an upgrade and I am 99% sure we are going to invest HIGH in a QB this coming draft.
We already have the Temp Starter till the rookie is ready. No need to spend more...now if a FA and we are looking for that #3 QB to replace Campbell or Weeden and he is cheaper...sure, why not.
As for Kubiak...All I know is his offense had such a nice stretch Vertical and Horizontal that it was a thing of beauty when executing. If Shanahan learned and has his own slant to it - It will be good for us.
Vers. Yes but keep in mind I think Pettine sees himself as on the offense side as well as Defense...a lot of Defense guys have wanted to get more involved with the offense of course the best being BB. I think why he didn't wish to give total control of the O to Kubiak. I'm sure he wishes to be involved in the Game Plans.
True his history is with the Defense - why our staff is almost completed on that side of the ball. But he is the type of guy who is buzzing in the head with X's n O's on both side of the ball. Now with the HC status he can get involved with the O...which can be good or bad...lol But I think kid Shanahan will be a good match with him as HC.

If we want someone who is familiar with Shanahan's playbook why don't we just sign Rex Grossman? He is available without compensation.
Kirk Cousins played in five games this season, starting three. He was not good. He completed only 52% of his passes (that is horrible), 171 yards per game, threw 4 TDs, and had 7 INTs. His yards per attempt was terrible at 5.5, which would have been by far the worst in the league if Cousins qualified. He had a QB rating of 58.4
Some might say, "Well it was a horrible situation, any QB would have failed." But they would be wrong. Most people would agree that RGIII had a bad season. But, while injured, he had a completion percentage of 60%, threw for 246 yards per game, 16 TDs, and 12 INTs. His yards per attempt was 7.0 and he had a QB rating of 82.2.
While RGIII did not have good numbers, they show that a QB didn't have to be horrible on that team. Cousins was only a little above Tebow level when only looking at the numbers. Everything Cousins can do Hoyer can do. There is no point in giving up any assets for a player who has proven nothing.

I agree w/you.
Cousins was a hot commodity, but then Washington shut-down RGIII and inserted Cousins. He was ineffective at the end of the season.
Furthermore, Cousins and Hoyer have a similar skill set.
I can't see giving up a draft pick for Cousins at this point in time.
tab-------I agree that Pettine wants to be involved in the offense, but I hope it's not too much. I want an experienced guy over there and allow Pettine more time to focus on the HC jobs and work w/the defense. I like his aggressive style over there. He got Buffalo to do what I thought Horton would do w/our defense.

7 years starting, (plus 3 other years with a total of 2 starts) 130 TD, 84 INT. 89.8 QB Rate, 7.62 yards/attempt.
That is far better than the journeyman role you would assign him. He's not a superstar, but he's hardly a bum..
He is in a group with guys like Jay Cutler and Alex Smith. He is a guy who can be successful with the right team around him.

I agree he'd certainly be in the same tier as Cutler/Smith though I'd put him behind those guys slightly. Either way, you are talking about a marginal starting QB (and again, that is better than what we are used to here).

Article on John DeFilippo, who we are interviewing tomorrow for our offensive coordinator job: Quote:
NEW YORK -- Broncos quarterbacks coach Greg Knapp, who oversaw Browns offensive coordinator candidate John DeFilippo for three years in Oakland, compared the young Raiders quarterbacks coach to another one of his associates the Browns sought to hire this year: Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase.
"Don't let his age (35) fool you,'' Knapp told cleveland.com at the Super Bowl media availability Wednesday. "He's like Adam Gase. He's got great knowledge and a great future ahead of him.''
Former Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, who has six years' experience as a coordinator, met with the Browns on Wednesday, and DeFilippo, who's never been a coordinator in the NFL, will interview with them Thursday.
When Knapp was Raiders offensive coordinator in 2007-08, DeFilippo had the unenviable task of coaching troubled No. 1 overall pick JaMarcus Russell, who flopped in the pros. It was later learned that Russell had tested positive for codeine even before the Raiders made him the top pick and gave him a $68 million contract, including $31.5 million guaranteed.
Russell went 0-1 as a rookie and 5-10 in 2008, but Knapp saw tremendous potential in DeFilippo -- a Youngstown native -- right from the start.
"When I was coordinator in Oakland, I said to him, 'You're the quarterback coach, and it's your job to coach me out of the room,' '' recalled Knapp. "He did that in a half a year's time -- and that was seven years ago, when he was really young.''
After the 2008 season, DeFilippo left Oakland to take over as quarterbacks coach of San Jose State, and earned the added duties of offensive coordinator in 2010. In his first year as coordinator, the Spartans jumped 32 places nationally in total offense from the previous year.
When Knapp returned to Oakland as coordinator in 2012, he brought DeFilippo back with him. That year, he coached Carson Palmer for most of the season and then former Buckeye Terrelle Pryor for the final game after Palmer was lost to a rib injury. In 2013, Pryor started nine games and won three after expected starter Matt Flynn flopped.
"He did a great job last year developing Terrelle Pryor during the offseason and he spent a lot of extra time talking to him about mechanics, on the field and in the classroom with him,'' said Knapp. "John has that work ethic that you want as a coach in the NFL, and certainly as a play caller.''
DeFilippo was also forced to start undrafted rookie Matt McGloin for seven games last season after a concussion rendered Pryor ineffective. McGloin went 1-5, but largely because of the Raiders' below-average defense, which finished 28th against the pass. McGloin threw for eight touchdowns, eight interceptions and a 76.1 rating.
"The quarterbacks really like John,'' said Knapp. "He's very personable, and it's important to him that he has a relationship with the players, not just as a coach but a person-to-person relationship.''
Knapp cited DeFilippo's football pedigree as his primary asset. His father, Gene DeFilippo was a former graduate assistant at the University of Tennessee, then coached offense at Youngstown State and Vanderbilt. The elder DeFilippo went on to become athletic director at Boston College, where he spent 15 years before retiring in 2012.
"John's been around football all of his life,'' said Knapp. "He's the son of a coach/AD, and he's a bright, young coach who has great knowledge of the game.''
DeFilippo also played quarterback at James Madison University and interviewed for their head coaching vacancy this offseason.
On the college level, DeFilippo coached quarterbacks at Fordham in 2000. He then went on to Notre Dame as a graduate assistant under Bob Davie in 2001 and Ty Willingham in 2002. He helped lead the Irish to an 8-0 start in 2002, with wins over No. 7 Michigan and No. 11 Florida State, and a Gator Bowl berth.
DeFilippo’s NFL coaching career began with the New York Giants in 2005, when he served as offensive quality-control coach on Tom Coughlin’s staff for two years. He helped the Giants to two postseason appearances, and New York posted a 19-13 regular-season record during his time there.
In 2009, as assistant quarterbacks coach for the Jets, he helped tutor rookie QB Mark Sanchez, who led the Jets to the AFC Championship in his first season as a pro. Browns coach Mike Pettine was Jets defensive coordinator at the time.
"John's worked under a lot of good coaches, including Tom Coughlin,'' said Knapp. "He's been on enough offensive staffs and gameplanned with enough experienced coordinators that he has a good feel what it takes to help develop a gameplan and to execute it.''
Knapp said he has no doubt that DeFilippo is ready to call plays at the pro level.
"I have the utmost confidence in him,'' he said. "He'd take charge in the classroom, and you'd see it on the field as well.''

I'm fairly convinced I'd rather give a guy like this a shot before Shanny the younger who's most likely looking forward to a HC job where as this Flippy kid is just looking for experience and to prove himself.

Pretty much the opposite imho. I want Shanny BECAUSE he has aspirations to become a HC. If he fails as the Browns OC he isn't going to get a chance anytime soon as a HC. He'll work extra hard to make sure we have a successfull offense and won't be learning on the job so much.
