I don't know why I am even getting into this as Schottenheimer is not even an option but. . .
The before he arrived the Jets had the 31st ranked offense. Schottenheimer had the 25th ranked offense in his first year, 26th in his second year, then 16th, then 20th, then 11th, then 25th. Is that an improvement? Yes. But they were only good one year.
The year before he arrived the Rams had the 31st ranked offense (Sam Bradford played only 10 games). Then Schottenheimer came and they had the 23rd ranked offense (with a full season of Bradford, followed up by last season with the 30th ranked offense (Bradford played only 9 games).
He stinks. He is the Rob Ryan of offensive coordinators. Big name, no results.
When you make your assessment on whether a coach is good or bad, do you only look at stats? From your post here, you never considered talent both Ryan and Shottenheimer had on their team.
It is pretty obvious Ryan is much more successful when he coaches on a playoff team. As for Schottenheimer, what stats do you pull making Sanchez a star? While with the Rams, you do know Sam Bradford had one rookie receiver, one second year receiver, one third year receiver, rookie running back, and a average OL? Oh, Bradford gets hurt halfway through the season. There is a saying "you are only as good as your tools!"

I was responding to a poster that was saying the teams improve once Schottenheimer arrives. That was clearly not the case.
Also, there have been multiple reports from Schottenheimer's previous team (the Jets) and current team (the Rams) that he is terrible.
Also, are you saying Sanchez was a star?

So you have your opinion, which you are obviously entitled to, and in between you post a bunch of things as fact... and you support it by using some "radio guys" who get blasted on here consistently for saying outrageous and often negative things to boost ratings, etc....
Maybe you are right, but in the end, it's little more than your opinion, which appears obviously biased against Banner.
when did i say it was FACT?

I was sarcastically asking you the question whether Sanchez is a star? My comment was Shottenheimer is only as good as his tools.
How has Jets offense perform since Schottenheimer left? I live in St. Louis. I have not heard complaints about Brian's performance. Do you have links to these multiple reports? A few fans believe Bradford is a bust. Many believe Bradford needs more play maker talent.

I've read this whole thread, and all the reports on OC candidates. The one thing that sticks out, and is true with all coaches. If you have bad players, your team will stink. Yes some players can be "coached up" somewhat, but without talent good coaches look ordinary or even bad.
OCs with great QBs look the best, take the same OC and give him bad choices at QB, and he will be called a bum. It is all kind of silly reading these press releases about how a quality control guy helped a team win a super bowl. To me it is a joke.
Coaching schemes are what make coaches great, even the best falter with bad talent. Norv Turner is a great OC, but many now think he sucks because of his time here with Weeden and Campbell as starters, and no running game.
Talent is a greater asset than a good coach. Tomlin IMO is a horrible coach, but had a very talented team. Now that the talent is aging and leaving, he is just an average to below average coach, but many think he is very good. To me, if Tomlin had the talent the Browns have had for a decade, he would have not have lasted two years here.
Until this team has a QB, and an Oline that can run block, any OC is going to look bad. Remember Arians? Most here thought he sucked, yet he has proven that with talent, he is pretty good.
Get the players necessary, and this staff will look good. Keep trading back, like years past, and you have what we've had for years, third round talent that many hope will reach their "potential".
Use every pick we have this year, and chose BPAs, and watch this team move forward, no matter who the coach is.

Big deal. I don't want Shotty either, but man.............are you really going to use fan polls to judge a guy.
Look at this board. The majority are stating that this FO sucks and are stooges and buffoons. But, the majority are pretty freaking ignorant. They are the same people who loved Junior. They loved Holmgren and Heckert. They thought TRich was great. They believed Weeden was good. They thought Weeden would improve tremendously under Norv. This just in...................the majority is usually way off in their assessment. Heck, I had guys ripping me because I disagreed w/them on drafting guys who are NOT good route runners. LOL
Why put a lot of stock into something like that?

Thanks, cfrs15. First, facebook? You can always find a ton of people who join a crowd. Bernie Miklasz's article was written back in September. Mike Florio? Come on Bro. Mike = Tony Grossi. Shock Reporting!! Douglas M (no last name?)...wrote the following: Quote:
On offense, the talent is there, no matter what the win-loss record says currently. The Rams' offensive line isn't nearly as bad as many have a right to think. No, hear me out. What I've been looking at is how the Rams' offense schemes a play. So much is dependent on if "A" blocks here, then "B" must be there to do "C". In other words, you've got the 3 ("A") and 5 ("B") of clubs, and you're praying to the Yugo Gods for a card ("C") to make those two cards mean something - ANYTHING - so you can stay in the game. What makes this kind of situation problematic for the Rams, is they're "hoping" more than "playing". If you're truly playing a bad hand, throw in the cards. You can't keep bluffing, and this is where Brian Schottenheimer's offense comes glaringly into symmetry with my little poker example.
First line "offense, the talent is there" This part is a head scratcher!
Rams Wide Receivers: Austin (Rookie) Bailey (Rookie) Blake (Rookie) Givins 2 yr Petitis 3 yr Quick 2 yr Veltung (Rookie)
RB's: Pead 1yr Richardson 2 yr Reynolds 1yr Stacy (Rookie)
Rams Offense Pro-Bowl players: None
With that said, I did ask for negative post. You produced. Kudos.
From the list of play makers I gave, do you think Brian under produced?

I think the biggest strike against Schottenheimer (with the Rams) was the lack of different ways he used Tavon Austin. Having a player like that requires some creativity and Austin barely got the ball.
I don't think Schottenheimer underproduced. I think he produced as expected. But expectations for him are below average.
Like I said before, Schottenheimer isn't even an option. He is under contract with the Rams. But if he was available (he probably will be next off-season) I would not want him under any circumstance. He has not shown the ability to consistently have a good offense. I would much rather go with someone who is a position coach.

Okay.......I guess. Maybe I haven't been following as closely as I should have been, but I think it would be more fruitful to concentrate on who we may hire than focusing on bad-mouthing a guy who isn't going to come here. No?

Gotcha Man! I understand your opinion.
First, Austin was a rookie. In my opinion, fans put way to much expectations on first year receivers. NFL offenses are extremely complex over college. Why? NFL defenses are that good. Sure, OC can dummy it down, but they fail to understand you dummy it down for the defense.
If I remember correctly, you can hire any assistant coach: a) given permission; b) team hiring must promote. Rams did give Brian permission to interview for the Vandy job. I think it is doable.
I always liked Brian, but he is looking to be a HC. I don't think he moves to Cleveland to be Asst. HC/OC.

I think it is obvious that you haven't been following along as I have said in multiple posts something along the lines of, "I don't know why we are discussing this. . ."

Just for future reference:
Yes, you have to have permission from the candidates team to interview the person if they are under contract.
The NFL doesn't consider anything a promotion unless you are becoming the head coach of the team. You could be the assistant to the assistant's assistant and a team wouldn't have to let you interview for a teams offensive coordinator position.
Vanderbilt didn't have to ask for permission to interview Schottenheimer because they are not in the NFL.
If a team gave another team permission to interview a person for their same position on that other team, they might as well fire them because they are obviously not wanted.

As far as play calling ... a lot depends on who your players are and what they can do. I have just 9 words for you ...... Kellen Clemens played 10 games last year, starting 9. That's like blaming the play caller for plays when Brady Quinn started ...... or Charlie Frye.
I love the article from ....... September ...... about players whining. September.
In their 1st 6 games .... games started and finished by Bradford, the Rams scored 27, 24, 7, 11, 34, and 38 points. I am not going to go check for defensive or special teams scored, but in 4 of 6 games they definitely scored enough to win games. Fans and players often complain about coordinators, They are the biggest target on any team.

My hope is that we can make hires this year and not change the HC, OC or DC for at least 4 years, preferably longer just to see what some REAL continuity might do with this young roster.
I personally don't care who they hire at this point.

While I can't say I'm on board with that, the fake WR screen to Cribbs with tackles split wide that ended up in a go route to Alex Smith was awesome.

I feel pretty much the same way. Pettine is the guy who will make the hire, so if he is good, I am good.
I was more worried about the D since we just started building for a 3-4 type D. I didn't want to see that blown up and have to start over from that standpoint. The O, we have some flexibility. If we need a QB to play a certain way, we have the ability to get one. We also know we need to address running back to some degree, and we have a lot of picks to get that done, so who we hire really isn't a big concern. I am sure whoever we select will have the necessary qualifications.
The only question then is if he is any good with who we have, but that could be said about anybody we hire. Only time will tell.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn. GM Strong

For once I just want to say these words about an offensive coordinator.
"He called a good game" or " I don't agree with the call, but I understand it".
Last year was the first year in recent memory where I wasn't jumping out of my skin due to horrible play calling. Norv didn't do a bad job at all.

FWIW, I am reminded of an observation I was taught once that seems to hold at least arguable truth: Great players make great coaches (as far as reputations and careers). It is not an automatic that a great QB, interms of results, not overhyped busts, will "make" the offensive coordinator, but the halo effect of a great QB, like Rodgers and Manning the elder and so on, seems to improve the coaches' stock considerably. Point being then that we should insure QB choice first AND OC about equally. The skillset has to fit the system for initial success. I am concerned that Banner said something to the effect that a good OC and HC can capitalize on a QB they select and make it work. Been thinking about this a good deal; also the truth that we have seen here in Cleveland: When a team wins, the (head) coach probably gets too much credit, and when they lose, too much blame. There are exceptions, but I hope we get a clear picture of what our identity will be offensively before the Deciders go to work. I am hoping for the best, but we are sifting through at least some leftovers to fill out staff.

Mary Kay article on DeFilippo, who interviews today. Maybe he really is an up and comer, but I'm so sick of hearing about Gase . . . Browns OC candidate John DeFilippo compared to Adam Gase by Broncos QB coachBy Mary Kay Cabot, Northeast Ohio Media Group January 30, 2014 at 7:07 AM NEW YORK -- Broncos quarterbacks coach Greg Knapp, who oversaw Browns offensive coordinator candidate John DeFilippo for three years in Oakland, compared the young Raiders quarterbacks coach to another one of his associates the Browns sought to hire this year: Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase. "Don't let his age (35) fool you,'' Knapp told cleveland.com at the Super Bowl media availability Wednesday. "He's like Adam Gase. He's got great knowledge and a great future ahead of him.'' Former Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, who has six years' experience as a coordinator, met with the Browns on Wednesday, and DeFilippo, who's never been a coordinator in the NFL, will interview with them Thursday. When Knapp was Raiders offensive coordinator in 2007-08, DeFilippo had the unenviable task of coaching troubled No. 1 overall pick JaMarcus Russell, who flopped in the pros. It was later learned that Russell had tested positive for codeine even before the Raiders made him the top pick and gave him a $68 million contract, including $31.5 million guaranteed. Russell went 0-1 as a rookie and 5-10 in 2008, but Knapp saw tremendous potential in DeFilippo -- a Youngstown native -- right from the start. "When I was coordinator in Oakland, I said to him, 'You're the quarterback coach, and it's your job to coach me out of the room,' '' recalled Knapp. "He did that in a half a year's time -- and that was seven years ago, when he was really young.'' After the 2008 season, DeFilippo left Oakland to take over as quarterbacks coach of San Jose State, and earned the added duties of offensive coordinator in 2010. In his first year as coordinator, the Spartans jumped 32 places nationally in total offense from the previous year. When Knapp returned to Oakland as coordinator in 2012, he brought DeFilippo back with him. That year, he coached Carson Palmer for most of the season and then former Buckeye Terrelle Pryor for the final game after Palmer was lost to a rib injury. In 2013, Pryor started nine games and won three after expected starter Matt Flynn flopped. "He did a great job last year developing Terrelle Pryor during the offseason and he spent a lot of extra time talking to him about mechanics, on the field and in the classroom with him,'' said Knapp. "John has that work ethic that you want as a coach in the NFL, and certainly as a play caller.'' DeFilippo was also forced to start undrafted rookie Matt McGloin for seven games last season after a concussion rendered Pryor ineffective. McGloin went 1-5, but largely because of the Raiders' below-average defense, which finished 28th against the pass. McGloin threw for eight touchdowns, eight interceptions and a 76.1 rating. "The quarterbacks really like John,'' said Knapp. "He's very personable, and it's important to him that he has a relationship with the players, not just as a coach but a person-to-person relationship.'' Knapp cited DeFilippo's football pedigree as his primary asset. His father, Gene DeFilippo was a former graduate assistant at the University of Tennessee, then coached offense at Youngstown State and Vanderbilt. The elder DeFilippo went on to become athletic director at Boston College, where he spent 15 years before retiring in 2012. "John's been around football all of his life,'' said Knapp. "He's the son of a coach/AD, and he's a bright, young coach who has great knowledge of the game.'' DeFilippo also played quarterback at James Madison University and interviewed for their head coaching vacancy this offseason. On the college level, DeFilippo coached quarterbacks at Fordham in 2000. He then went on to Notre Dame as a graduate assistant under Bob Davie in 2001 and Ty Willingham in 2002. He helped lead the Irish to an 8-0 start in 2002, with wins over No. 7 Michigan and No. 11 Florida State, and a Gator Bowl berth. DeFilippo’s NFL coaching career began with the New York Giants in 2005, when he served as offensive quality-control coach on Tom Coughlin’s staff for two years. He helped the Giants to two postseason appearances, and New York posted a 19-13 regular-season record during his time there. In 2009, as assistant quarterbacks coach for the Jets, he helped tutor rookie QB Mark Sanchez, who led the Jets to the AFC Championship in his first season as a pro. Browns coach Mike Pettine was Jets defensive coordinator at the time. "John's worked under a lot of good coaches, including Tom Coughlin,'' said Knapp. "He's been on enough offensive staffs and gameplanned with enough experienced coordinators that he has a good feel what it takes to help develop a gameplan and to execute it.'' Knapp said he has no doubt that DeFilippo is ready to call plays at the pro level. "I have the utmost confidence in him,'' he said. "He'd take charge in the classroom, and you'd see it on the field as well.''

Yeah, me too. The media will keep Gase's name in the picture likely forever to continue to tarnish and make the organization look bad just b/c he turned down the interview. I'm about as sick of hearing about Adam Gase as I am Justin Beiber. I'm half tempted to deport them all, deport Mary Kay, deport Jason LaCanfora and deport my neighbor, just because...

I have a few people I'd like to deport as well ........ Starting with the Steelers ... Ravens ...... Bengals ...... most of my ex- girlfriends ...... anyone named Modell ....... and the list goes on ....... and on .......

Wasn't that Stuckey? The play in the redzone where the OL (except Mack) stood around looking confused, Cribbs under center, and Stuckey hiding behind the RT.
Man, that was fun just to type...
There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

Ive met john several times when i lived in mobile. He is one cool dude. He gave me some giants gear when he was a quality control guy. Then a year later he was with knapp in oakland. my picture with them was hung up at the hooters i worked at. Glad to see him get a shot. Long overdue.

Well MK's article didn't tell me anything I want to hear, DeFilippo’s experience consist of developing a hand ful of losing QBs... WTH?
If that is all I have to go on, I have to ask why we would even interview this guy?

Two things from Ian Rapoport on the coaching staff front: Quote:
Former Titans OC Dowell Loggains is now on the Browns staff, per source. He’ll be QB coach or OC. To be determined

Would be surprised, based on what I’m hearing, if the Browns hired Kyle Shanahan to be their OC. Believe they’ve moved on

Fans wanted Bruce Arians fired when he was here as well.
Guilty as charged...owned up to my gaff years later.
I know not a possibility but to be honest with you all...I would bring back Daboll. I am one of the few that thought he was an excellent OC got the most out of what we had was innovative and I thought one of the best QB coaches we ever had here.
Oh there's one poster in particular here who won't like that statement ........
I have never seen someone lose a debate so thoroughly, yet be so eager to bring it back up whenever they get a chance.
I don't think the guy was an excellent coordinator. One could make the argument, however, that he got the most out of what he had to work with.
Your claim was that he was doing a great job in Miami. He wasn't. His team was below average in every statistical category, and he got fired. Then he went to the Chiefs, where he ran the worst offense in the NFL, and got fired again.
He ran some innovative stuff while he was here. But he never showed enough here or anywhere else to make me think 'this guy is a good coordinator'.
Seriously, why on Earth do you still bring this up?
