the big difference in all of that is that to get High Def DVD's (whether it's HD-DVD or BluRay), it's significantly cheaper for the installed base of 10 million XBox owners. They only need to spend the $200 or so to get the add-on player.
So, yes there are already3 million bluray players out there, but there are 10 million homes that can upgrade to true high def DVD for darn near as cheap as they can get an upconvert player.
Yeah, in total cost the PS3 may be lessexpensive, but for the XBox crowd the bulk of that cost is already paid... cost yet to be paid is WAY lower.... I think that's what MS is banking on.
Meanwhile on the other side of the spectrum, Wii is coming up fast. And if I had to gamble, I think by the end of summer Nintendo's gonna start running away with this thing.
I think that tells system makers loud and clear that people are willing to pay up to a point, and that point is $400.
It's funny how MS disregards Nintendo and calls them a non-competitor, they won't be saying that once they lose the lead.

oh , I'd agree there.
If Nintendo's production could keep up with demand, I think they'd have the lead right now.

I just can't bring myself to pay $600 for a gaming console.
Maybe if I played it 24/7 but I would maybe play it 10-15 hrs a week.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

That's about what I have time to play. 10-15 hours a week.
For 52 weeks, for at least 5 years. That's not getting your money's worth?

Considering the previous generation of consoles maxed out at $300, yeah.
It's like buying two PS2's. It's bad enough that 360 was $400.
As much as I want HD graphics for my Vizio, the more I think about it and the more I play it, the more I love my Wii.

Are cars cheaper or priced the same as before? When HDTV came out, was it cheaper than CRTs? DVD players cheaper than VCRs? Gas prices? Anything?
If you're expecting the prices to go down or stay the same with next-gen consoles, then I guess you best be getting a good 15 years of playing on that PS2. It's new technology, it's inflation. Minimum wage is up, salaries are up, things just increase over time. It's just the way it is.

You're right everything costs more, gas, college, food, going to the movies, etc.
As inflation increases we should see a generous boost in income because that's just how things work.
IN the 50's it was about 25-30 for a gallon of gas, now it's $3.00 almost. They also used to pay $250 for a car, and now that's laughable.
Find what you love and let it kill you.

Yeah, which is why Wii cost $250 while GameCube cost $199.
$400 360 over a $300 Xbox, I can see that.
But a freaking $600 PS3? That's too much of a price hike for a videogame system.

PS3 is more than a video game system.
But isn't Sony taking the eye off the ball then? They can try to turn the videogame industry into a cross-media platform all they want, but the fundamental thing that drives the industry is game sales. Not Blu-Ray sales or any of that nonsense.
The people who say PS3 is more than a game system are correct, but what about the middle school and high schoolers who want *JUST* a game system because they don't have HD in the first place?
Sony's forgetting that a niche market cares about Blu-Ray at this point in time, and while they have huge interest in it, they have turned off Joe Six Pack with the price tag.
