And the team that won the SB...had what for WRs?
Percy Harvin (electric - and hey, he finally got to show it in the SB) Doug Baldwin (good deep threat) Golden Tate (pretty good underneath option)
Marshawn Lynch & Zach Miller weren't bad receiving options either but you asked for WRs.

Ignoring other spots...What ILB is a must pick early in the draft...Skov is the best of the bunch and he is a late 2nd kinda guy. Our DL is set, our OLBs are set, our safeties are set...CB is lacking yes, but there is talent in the draft there as well.
I'm not sure what ILB is a "must pick" in the draft, but I'll say this: look at the teams Pettine came from. You can bet he's going to make sure ILB is a definite position of strength.

To the last 3 posts...
I'm of the opinion that with Brian Hoyer we can be successful. The kid places the ball very well. The ball goes to a spot where the guy that catches it can do stuff with it. Something we haven't seen.
That sounds good in theory. The problem could become, as I've often seen in the past, where opponents get film on a QB and begin to exploit his weaknesses. That's why a two game window simply isn't enough to say for sure about a QB.
It would certainly be the hopes of all Browns fans if Hoyer could Iight it up and become a great QB. But as we Browns fans have seen all too often, the back-up QB is the hero until he becomes the starter. Once other teams have game film of him and learn how to exploit their weakness, the scenery changes.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Which I believe further illustrates my point. Having a WR core filled with 1st round draft picks or studs per say isn't a prerequisite for success.

Harvins stuff was mostly a couple of runs from the WR position and a return. I didn't see the WR do much - Baldwin had a good 2nd half of the year that is for sure.
But keep in mind I have NEVER stated you don't need WRs. You just don't have to go for TOP ECHILON WRs to have a good corp. If one falls in your lap great...( Gordon ) but give me 5 solid WRs who have excellent hands and run good routes.
But like anything you have to do your homework and get it right.
Not to change the subject but what position did Farmer our GM play?

So then what is the prerequisite for success? Finding Cam Chancellor in the 5th round? Finding Richard Sherman in the 5th round? Finding an undersized QB in the 3rd round? Finding Malcolm Smith (Super Bowl MVP) in the 7th round? If that's all it takes, then why doesn't everybody do it?

What it takes without a superstar offense is a well rounded team. And to a great extent what you alluded to, solid drafting.
The point of all of this was to show that you don't need those "superstar 1st round WR's", but more so solid WR's that run solid routes and are sure handed. Jerry Rice ran a 4.6 40.
This was predicated upon someone supporting taking two first round WR's in this draft. You can look around the league and see this certainly isn't the case.
Teams have been successful in a number of ways that haven't included an all star WR cast.

K ' Steve, If they could get Kelvin Benjamin and Jace Amaro, aka best WR,and Best TE then that could be the whole draft right there.
But on this note. (Duck Commander character, Silas Robertson impression) Hey! There is a Mathew's in this draft. Jack! Hey! if I'm not wrong, he is a Kin to Bruce Mathews! Hey! hall of fame. Kin To Clay Mathews, From the Browns, and Clay Mathews of the Packers.
So, Hey! Jack! If the guy's name is Earnhardt, and you're starting an Auto Racing team, you put him in the drivers seat. Hey! Number 4! Not too early. All's I'm saying is you can be kicking yourself again later. But Hey! Maybe this is the one who isn't going to have a 10 year NFL career! Jack! In a sport where the average player gets what?! 4 and a half years?!
Back to the other note. No way do both Kelvin Benjamin and Jace Amaro make it past the Bengals first pick. At least that's how I figure it.
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

First thought...
It's not that this is something that I think is a blueprint to success because I've seen it done before. It's that in a league where the advantages have been given to the WRs and the passing game. Having even MORE options would benefit us. We have every season lamented how our WRs don't get open, they don't catch the ball, and they don't do their jobs. This year is an opportunity to get 3 with our first 3 picks. As for Cincy taking Benjamin or Amaro...I don't see it. They have Gresham and Eifert...that takes them out of the running for a TE. Benjamin maybe...but...look what that would give them. Green, Benjamin, Hawkins, Jones, Gresham and Eifert. A cadre of pass catchers that I am suggesting that we put together. To pair with Andy Dalton...a middling QB...and they win often.
As for finding the limitations of Hoyer...that is a concern. But look at the way he performed in his limited opportunities for us. He threw the deep ball well. He found his TE and spread the ball around efficiently...so that's proof that he went through his progressions...so he didn't Couch/Anderson/Weeden himself by not reading the entire field. That makes it tough to take away his initial read and cut off his success like with those 3. He has the arm strength to succeed which puts him ahead of Frye, Quinn, and McCoy... His only issues were decision making...He made mistakes against Minnesota but continued to get better as time went on. We saw progress from a QB, which wasn't something we'd seen from other QBs (save for McCoy under Mangini) in Cleveland.
Either way...
Going back to my other point...
We have Josh Gordon. Obviously he is immensely talented. He does great things for our passing game. Though...He cant do it alone. He averaged over 100 yards a game, but our offense still only managed 19 pts a game, and couldn't move the chains. We threw the ball 30 more times than any other team in the league...and were 11th in yards. While he made our passing game competent...we certainly did not light the world on fire. In a league where its easy to put up big numbers. If we added Sammy Watkins. We get the best playmaker in the draft. He can get deep, he can work in space (evidenced by the amount of screens run for him and his success level) and he is a good route runner. If you add Kelvin Benjamin you get a huge body...that can be a fantastic possession WR and a great red zone target. Throw in Jace Amaro you get a great TE that is a pass catcher AND a good blocker. Pair that with Cameron and you have more success...
If you think that Amaro is needed to be taken in the 1st, do it, and grab Allen Robinson in the 2nd, and then you add a 6'3 body with speed.
We can spread teams out and challenge secondaries, and later in the draft grab a QB to groom...McCarron, Boyd, Fales...I remain a fan of Boyd. Our biggest weakness as a team is an inability to move the chains consistently. Inability to keep our defense on the sidelines, and to wear out opposing defenses. With the direction the league appears to be heading...being able to spread teams out and use that to open up running lanes. Dion Lewis and Edwin Baker could be successful.
Beyond those picks...as I said, we need a good ILB, and Shayne Skov would be an incredible fit...We need a CB and an OG also...we have 4 picks in the 3rd and 4th round.
Boyd, a G, a CB, and Skov...not in that order. Or McCarron instead of Boyd. Or Fales.
that would plug most of our weaknesses as well as create a strength.
Regardless, I think that we need a WR by our 2nd round pick is complete...I just really think that the quality of this draft would behoove us to take where those strengths are and take what has perennially been a weakness and turn it to a strength immediately.
"It has to start somewhere It has to start somehow What better place than here? What better time than now?"

Clowney scares me.
I don't like it when people question someone's desire in football.
Everyone takes plays off. Thats different. You either get a Ngata or a Gerard Warren.
But when people feel you're playing for just the money, what then are you playing for after you get that money?
The guy has the tools to be an all time great. But so did at lot of people that fizzled out.
I agree. A lot of investigation would be needed. But IF he applies himself he could be a Bruce Smith type player. THAT would really change things for us.
Also, he's not the only player in our sights that worries me. Johnny football worries the HELL out of me. He reminds me a lot of Jake Locker, but with better wheels. He throws well on the run and is a running threat, but I'm not sure he can just stand in the pocket and be effective as a pocket QB. Also, at his size will he even survive an NFL season while doing all that running?
Every possible player at #4 will be at least somewhat risky. There is no Andrew Luck or Joe Thomas "sure thing" pick in this years draft.

j/c I am of the opinion that there is not a QB in this draft worth a top 5 pick. I think Teddy Bridgewater is close...But not there. And he will be gone. Manziel...don't want him...and he probably won't be there....Bortles...Definitely not at 4.
I am in the Watkins at 4 camp. yes he is a WR...I hear alot of arguments against him....Here is my take on some of those
--you rarely or don't take WR this high...........................Rarely is how I choose to see it. Irving Fryar was a #1 pick....(of course so was Keyshawn Johnson...lol) So there has to be a reason to take a player in this area. I believe he is the biggest playmaker in this draft. And he is at a position of need. That I believe warrants a top 5 pick.
--You don't pick a #2 WR this high...........................Says who? Julio Jones was not too far behind this pick....And he is working out quite well for Atlanta. Besides As mentioned earlier, it is about adding talent to your team. It is the "best player" notion as opposed to greatest need. You cannot be afraid to take a great player just because you have a good/great player already on your team. Most evaluators have him as a #1 or #2 type receiver. AS we have Gordon...yes technically he would be our #2 or I would like to think of as 1b.
We have Gordon, we don't need another stud receiver because Shanahan's offense doesn't throw to the #2....................Yes Shanahan's offense wants to get the ball to the #1 receiver. But anyone who thinks they won't get the ball to the #2 receiver or that having a quality #2 receiver won't make this offense better is just dreaming. And yes we have Gordon....But nothing else...AND one misstep and we don't even have Gordon...Having Watkins as a backup if God forbid Gordon gets hurt or screws up....I think that is a need to prepare for.
Some people might like Lee or Evans better than Watkins....I say that is fine...Me I like Watkins because I think he has the best hands out of the elite group and I love his attitude on rushing downs. I love his speed and I think he runs great routes...I also thinks he probably complements Gordon the best out of the group as they have just the right differences.
If i was sold on one of the QB's I would say go for him...But I just am not....so personally I am a Watkins at 4...look for a Garrapolo, Carr, type later. I think this works to our advantage as the QB can sit behind Hoyer for a year or 2.
JMHO...
I thought I was wrong once....but I was mistaken...

Throw Long. Amaro is he a TE? Why would the Bengal take another TE - they have already invested high in Gresham and Eifort???

Yep. The same one that had Roddy White in and out all season, Jackson kept getting hurt, and lost Julio for over half the season, with an old defense.
That one.

If I knew Hoyer was coming in at or near 100 percent I'd nab McCarron later. This kid played against good NFL type competition and succeeded. He's got a pretty good head on his shoulders too. Many don't like him I know but I'm not betting against him. I don't think he'd hurt your team at all.

When he runs a sub 4.45 at 275 pounds tomorrow, you can add very rich to the descriptive list lol
As for the topic, if we pass on a QB at 4, I would prefer trading for Mallett but fi were to draft one then I would probably go after Garoppolo as I think Carr is gonna be gone in the top 10 also.

You know after thinking long and hard about the #4 pick, I think we might want to pass on all the QBs and take Watkins. He will bring more to the team in the way of passing threat (when paired with Gordon) than a QB would.
I like Manziel, but I would be happy with a later QB if we were to take Watkins. I feel pretty good about Hoyer starting and think we might take a chance on a later QB or TWO.

I understand we need a QB. What I don't understand is why a few on here are wanting to give up what would be a good amount of high picks on a QB that the FO might not deem worthy. Johnny Manziel might be someone's choice, but what if the FO does not think so? Does that make them wrong? I would rather keep our picks than throw them away of a maybe. To much like Quinn and Weeden. How'd that work for ya?

You could say that about a lot of positions.
Have people won titles in SPITE of their WRs? Yeah, the early Brady Pats come to mind...
Does Arizona make the Super Bowl without both Fitzgerald and Boldin? I doubt it.
Saying you don't want two high quality WRs on your team seems silly to me..
What QB wouldn't want Gordon, Watkins, and Cameron? Add a vet WR to that (I'd love Maclin) and you have one of the better receiving corps in the league...

So what it comes down to is who helps this team the most.....and right now....I think Watkins and a QB later helps the team more than Manziel, Bridgewater, or Bortles and WR later.....and I do mean now and in the future...JMHO...

Was that supposed to be in purple? I would take Bortles at #4 and that would be a risky pick. Does not make sense to throw your draft away on ??? and certainly not to move up. Thats all I'm saying. I would go BPA at #4. and if need be take Garp in the 2nd.

Right.
But there have been people that literally said they don't want to spend the #4 pick on a "#2 WR" which is bullcrap. Adding Watkins doesn't make him a #2 just because we have Gordon...
If I had my choice my board would look like..
Bridgewater Manziel Watkins Try to Trade down Clowney Bortles
So to me, If Teddy and JFM are gone, I might look for a trade, depending on the offer, If not, I take Watkins and am happy about it... Clowney and Bortles scare me...

I don't want to spend the #4 pick on Watkins because the wide receiver class is so deep. There are several players I would take over him (Bridgewater, Manziel, Clowney for sure). Quote:
Adding Watkins doesn't make him a #2 just because we have Gordon...
Then what does it make him?

I think Bortles offers the most upside and has good size and good arm. He could sit behind Hoyer for a yr and be a nice QB. To many ?? on the other ones. I would take Teddy and not much else that high.
