Browns place transition tag on C Alex Mack
By Ryan Wilson | CBSSports.com

Will another team try to sign Alex Mack?. (USATSI) Will another team try to sign Alex Mack? (USATSI)

The Browns placed the transition tag on center Alex Mack Monday, minutes before the +‹p.m. deadline.

Unlike the fraE®hise tag, which is a one-year deal that guarantees the player the average of the five largest current-year salaries at his position, the transition tag promisÐ[¢0£!paÌö,©!player the average of the 10 largest prior-year salaries at his position.

The biggest difference, however, is that while a franchised player can negotiate with other teams, if he signs elsewhere, the franchising teaò·Zæšthú·]áÓon to match the contract or accept two first-round picks ¬âfá+¡qen%AÍ”. ªkÈhe transition tag, the player can negotiate with other teams, but if he signs elsewhere the original team has the right to match in seven days, but gets nothing in the way of compensation. This is one of the reasons the transition tag is rarely used.

The franchise tag for offensive linemen is approximately $11.6 million. The transition tag? About $10 million. So the Browns, who are approximately $47 million under salary-cap space (according to OvertheCap.com), save roughly é1.6 million with this move. Put another way: It makes you wonder why they didn't just franchise Mack and work on a new long-term contract before the season.

Former Packers executive Andrew Brandt has an idea.

It also allows the market to set Mack's worth. Maybe his camp thinks he's worth more than the Browns are willing to pay. By allowing other teams to negotiate, there won't be any confusion. The problem for the Browns, though, is that a team in desperate need of a center could be \¤lling to pay Mack a sum ò# P×Èowè8NúÏldn't. (In related news: The Browns are in desperate need DÆÆüÚenG”‰õ…br />
Mack is considered one of the NFL's best center and ranked fifth in ProFootballFocus.com's list of top free agents:

"As consistent a center as there is in the league, Mack may be the safest free agent out there. No health concerns, no character red flaôŸ3,¢e a³„z>¸nry of production, he's arguably coming off his best year where he was our fourth ranked center."

This looks like a cheap, stupid move.

This is a bit of an exaggeration, but I get his point.

If some team offers him some ungodly amount of money then you know what? We would have been delaying the inevitable by franchise tagging him. Good luck winning games paying your damn center 13+ mil.

Maybe the Browns are thinking that he is asking for too much money and want him to test the market to see what he truly might be worth?

I'm wondering if they are really far off in the negotiations?

I remember hearing that Greco took some reps at center last year. Maybe they think not resigning Mack wouldn't create a huge problem.

Browns center Alex Mack: Sign it now.

The little-used transition tag allows Mack to negotiate with other teams and to sign an offer sheet elsewhere. If the Browns don’t match, Mack joins the new team. If the Browns match, he gets that same contract in Cleveland.

But no one will be offering Mack a contract that averages $10 million per year. So why not take the $10 million guaranteed for 2014 and hit the open market in 2015?

The Browns would have to pay Mack $12 million to use either the franchise or transition tag in 2015. If they use either tag, Mack should immediately sign it then, too.

He’s a great center, but he’s a center. The position doesn’t pay eight figures per year.

Once Mack signs his transition tender, it will.

Plus, one needs to weigh in on the amount of effort/attitude he'll put in here if his heart is set on moving onto a different team, but being basically forced to remain here.

Not saying he'd loaf, not saying he wouldn't - but food for thought.

I actually like this move. Mack gets to test the water and his value is determined by other offers. The Browns then have the right to match or let him walk.

I mean, seriously, would you match a 20 million per year, 5 year offer for Mack? I wouldn't think anybody would make that offer, but if they did, I'd pass.

If the offer is reasonable or even a bit on the high side, I'd expect the Browns to match it. And that basically means that Mack could be a Brown for 4 to 5 more years.

this move is really the best thing short of signing him to a contract. I suspect that we'll do the same with Haden next year if we haven't locked him up.

And I'll applaud that as well.

I get a sense that Mack is a pro. He won't let that get in the way of doing his job and doing it well.

I just don't get a feeling he'll loaf at all. If this was some other player, one with lesser character, then yeah, maybe, but not Mack.. Just don't see it.

Besides, how mad can a guy get making 8 to 10 mill a years for 5 years which would set him and his family up for the rest of their lives.. LOL Pay me that much and I'll shovel human waste and be damn happy to do it. LOL

Let's use more realistic numbers. Let's say a team offers him $11.6M, the average of the top five centers. No way do the Browns pay that amount, they've clearly shown their unwillingness to do that when they Transition tagged him instead of Franchise tagging him. As it is now, if that were to happen, he walks away with no compensation to the Browns. If they had Franchise tagged him instead, and the Browns didn't want to match the $11.6M, we'd get the two first round picks. The difference in the two tags is $1.6M. That's a cheap move that risks losing him for no compensation, but commits us to $10M/year if he signs and stays, and bumps his salary next year to $12M if we tag him again. From where I'm sitting, the move looks both stupid & cheap.

yep and that would have kept any team from negotiating a contract with Mack, $10 mil plus two picks.

This way we give mack his desire, to test the FA market, as he said he wanted to do from the beginning. So rather than being a draconian FA it appears they are wiling to work with players, even a t their risk

If he gets an offer we cant or wont match then he goes, that simple. If the offers come in a reduced rate we have a bargainig chip for a long term deal at less than 10 mil.

This should keep Mack happy and not disgruntled and allow us a chance to not have to overpay as much on a long term deal.

if a team wants to go to $12 mil for 5 seasons with 25 guaranteed, then more power to them and let them figure out how that cap number impacts the rest of their team.

Or we match the $8 mil for 5 years with 15 guaranteed and keep him here.

I still contend it is a win / win though the talking heads will try to spin it otherwise.

Where do you get $8M, if he signs the tag offer, we're on the hook for $10M this year and possibly $12M next. (See my post above yours.)

I really dont like the possibility of a new QB coming in with a new center. Bad move if you ask me. Got to give a new QB or Hoyer the best possibility of succeeding. Should have franchised him.

$10 million for a center is ridiculous. If he signs the tender and doesn't negotiate a long term deal, I would be looking to draft a Center in this draft.

That's not the top 5 centers, that's the top 5 linemen who are getting that money. The average of the top 5 centers is more closer to about 7 mil and some change (I'm eyeballing it). His 10 mil tag actually makes him the highest paid center by about 1.9 mil.

If he signs, we're paying $10M unless he signs somewhere else for more. That's the point of the Tag.

Werent we at one point paying a long snapper 8.9 million? Mack is certainly worth that. Especially considering how much cap we have to play with.

Yeah, but no one will be paying him over 10 million. He's not the best center in the league, and the highest paid center is only making 8.1 mil.

I think this is a smart move. It allows the Browns to allow Mack to test the FA waters so he can be aware of his worth. Knowing that no team is going to pay Mack 10 million a year, it allows the Browns to match a clear long term offer that is more in-line to the player's worth. Mack comes out the winner in this case because he'll get top dollar regardless and leave with a clear understanding of what teams are willing to pay for a center.

Which I believe is the entire point. I believe there will be offers in that range. At least in the 7.5 to 8 mil range.

The question will become whether Mack really wants out of Cleveland. Players have a lot of things to consider. If Mack refuses to sign a long term deal this year, he would be an injury away from not having nearly the same worth next off season. That's a huge gamble to take.

But if he wants out of Cleveland, it may be a gamble he feels is worth taking.

The only real setback I see to allowing another team to an "offer and match scenario" is that we are in a very good position to front load contracts right now which would lessen the cap hit in coming years, when we can only hope may be a time when we may need it.

By matching another teams deal, it may be a back loaded contract which would not be in our favor in the future.

Only if he doesn't sign an offer sheet with any other team. If he does sign an offer sheet, we get him for the same money he was offered.

It's not about the 1.6 million. I've said this before: Maybe we think that Mack's camp overvalues what they can get on the open market and the Browns can get a better price if we actually let them put that theory to the test?

I think it's a great move by the Browns. How many teams out there are willing to spend mad cash on a center? Probably not too many. So let him see what his true value is and then make a long term deal based on market conditions. At least they get to find out what market conditions really are whether they get a long term deal done this year or next year.

Who cares that he makes $10 million? It's not my money. The team has to spend it somehow. Call me silly, but dumping money into a 1st-rnd-pick-turned-Pro Bowler doesn't sound that dumb, regardless of the position.

Haven't we all been clamoring for first round picks that AREN'T busts for many years now? We now have a few of them on the roster and I like seeing the team do what it takes to keep them.

Just my opinion.

This looks like a cheap, stupid move.

I know this was mentioned by me in the other thread but will elaborate on it here.

1. First off the Avg. Center top 5 salary is not 11.6 mil that is the avg. top 5 Left Tackle contract. Also top 10 all probably left tackle with maybe the highest paid Right Tackle of two who got the contract to play LT.

2. We wish to sign him...but he wishes to explore his worth and likes the new coaching staff as they went out to him. So he expressed the - I will give you a chance to match/better.

3. So to makes sure #2 happens we decide to tag him.

4. Franchise tag sometimes alienate players cause they wish to see their worth. Well there is no Franchise out there that will give up two First round picks for a Center. So in turn there will not be an nfl team out there that will make an offer.

5. Transition Tag. has no compensation. But all who pooh pooh it are thinking we will get no compensation. Some ridiculous things were typed above like 20 mil a season - a GM who offers that btw will be fired and never hired again. We probably are expecting some highest paid Center offers maybe. But it shouldn't come close to the 10 mil.

6. Point is we do not mind him signing a contract. More than likely we will be able to afford to match it. Mack is then Signed...end of story - a Brown.

That is why it was a smart move. We figure the odds that somebody will offer a ridiculous amount of money for a center is probably Slim to NONE.

What we did was guarantee we have the courtesy to match any offer a team makes to him. Better than letting him hit FA.

Franchise tag you pretty much force him to sign the tag...get a little PO'd at us - collect his 11+mil.

Transition tag...if he signs it right away so that nobody makes an offer then he pretty much wants out of here.

This way he will hit the FA market get to have a good read of what is out there in offers and remain a Brown.

I see this as the best route for us to have Mack here long term.

This is a great move by the Browns. We set a tender very high so no one out there is going to offer more per year. Mack gets to go out there and see what his value is on the market. We get to match it. No one is going to offer Mack a 4yr 40 million deal unless the guaranteed money is very low.

He is going to be offered around 8-9 mil a year for 4 years with around 13-14 guaranteed. He is happy cause he will get to see his worth (unless he is Peyton Hillis and set the bar extremely high) and the Browns can match and retain his services.

Unless I'm missing something here I don't see how this is a bad thing, especially since the Poison Pill problem has been eliminated.

Didn't see this elsewhere, but it might be in the other thread and I missed it:

web page

CLEVELAND (92.3 The Fan) – The Browns want center Alex Mack to remain in Cleveland for a long time.

They’ve said it, but new head coach Mike Pettine wanted to show it.

That’s why Pettine boarded a plane along with new offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan and offensive line coach Andy Moeller and flew to California over the weekend.

“He’s outstanding,” Pettine said Monday night while making an appearance at the Cleveland Auto Show at the I-X Center. “He’s one of the better centers in the National Football League.”

Pettine wanted to sit down and meet face to face with the 2-time Pro Bowl center and show him why he and the Browns are still a perfect fit, despite yet another offseason of change following yet another losing season.

“I thought it was important for him to get to know us as a coaching staff,” Pettine said. “We didn’t want to try and sign a guy, lock him up to a long term deal when he didn’t have a good feel for who we were, for who I was, what I believed in, my core beliefs in running a program.

“If it didn’t marry to what he was looking for then we would’ve felt comfortable with turning him loose, but we thought it was important for him to see who we were as people first, and as football guys second.”

Pettine came away feeling so good about their conversation that on Monday the Browns took the unusual route and applied the transition tag to Mack, ensuring that he won’t walk away without them at least getting a say in the matter.

The transition tag means that the Browns could end up paying him $10.039 million for 1 year, making him the highest paid center in the game, but they will get an opportunity to match any multi-year offer Mack might get later this month. The Browns would not receive any draft pick compensation if they decline to match any offer.

Using the franchise tag would’ve cost $11.654 million for Mack.

“We felt that was the best avenue for us to go,” Pettine said. “To me, he’s an outstanding player and we want him to be a Cleveland Brown for a long time and I think putting the [tag on him], the thought behind it was it will allow us the opportunity to potentially do that.”

Mack hasn’t missed a single snap since the Browns drafted him 21st overall in 2009 – that’s 4,998 consecutive snaps but the Browns have gone a lowly 23-57 since.

Quarterback Brian Hoyer, who also appeared at the Auto Show Monday evening, was glad to hear that Mack was tagged.

“It shows that we want him back,” Hoyer said. “Alex is great. I don’t know how this [new] offense does it but last year he made a lot of the line calls, the mic [protections]. That’s so valuable when you have a guy who can do that and not have to put it on the quarterback but hopefully however it plays out we can keep him and I look forward to playing with him again.”

Being a quarterback, Hoyer has an appreciation for players like Mack who are skilled physically but also extremely intelligent.

“He takes center to a whole other level because he can almost be a quarterback on the line,” Hoyer said. “He can make the calls and a lot of those guys really rely on him. When you know you have a top [center], it does take a little bit off your table.

“He’s a Pro Bowler for a reason.”

Because teams must choose between the franchise or transition tag to use, tagging Mack might also mean that safety T.J. Ward could be as good as gone. Or will it?

“I wouldn’t read into it,” Pettine said. “It only eliminates the ability to have tagged him. He’s an outstanding player, he’s a Cleveland Brown and we’ll make the decision what’s best for him moving forward.”

The Buffalo Bills elected not to franchise 3-time Pro Bowl safety Jairus Byrd which means he’ll be an unrestricted free agent on March 11 – and a likely target for the Browns. Pettine, who couldn’t comment on Byrd because he’s technically still under contract, coached Byrd last season in Buffalo.

Pettine declined to say if the Browns were in contract negotiations with Ward, but did say they are heading into free agency with a plan as well as contingency plans once the market opens and they can begin negotiating starting this Saturday.

The Browns are also hoping they won’t have to negotiate much longer with Mack and ensure that he’ll handle many more snaps for them for years to come.

I don't know what makes my numbers any more unrealistic than yours... but assume you are right. He's clearly a top 5 center and if that's the average, I think they pay it. To get a Center as good, they' d pay that much and maybe more.

But here is the real problem, there aren't any centers out there as good as Mack in Free Agency and I don't know what's in the draft but I hardly think there is one as good or better and if there is, unless we take him early, we may not get him.

So it becomes pay it or insert a lesser guy that only makes your line weaker.

Next up, we'll hear why he's not a top 5 center

Look at Byrd in Buffalo. He wanted to be a free agent, and the Bills wouldn't let him. They franchised him, and from reports, he just signed the tender and played his year. Who knows how seriously he negotiated with them.

In Mack's case, the Browns can hold him to his word, and maintain the final "offer" on him. If a team wants to sign him to a 5 year deal worth $40 million, then the Browns can decide if that's appropriate or not. If a team gives him a 10 year deal with $120 million, with substantial guarantees throughout, they may not. It all depends on what another team wants to do ..... and that's what Mack said he wanted all along.

By matching another teams deal, it may be a back loaded contract which would not be in our favor in the future.

Yeah, but that would hurt the other team too. There are no more poison pills that apply to location and such, so any damaging provisions would damage the other team as well.

I think it's a great move - so long as the dispute between the browns and Mack is "how much is Mack worth" and not "Does Mack want to remain with the Browns".

If it's the second, then you use the franchise tag and then trade the player. If it's the first, then this is perfect since Mack gets to find out what he's actually worth (on the open market, and without the two first-round picks dangling around), and then the Browns will pay him that.

That's exactly the point, Whatever another team offers they have to live with if we don't match. Which is why I don't expect anyone to go crazy nutty with an offer.

OK.....I'm gonna say it....Losing Mack isnt the end of our 2014 season, Yes Mack is one of the top 5 centers in Football and yes we need to try to keep him....But common, we cant over pay him and stick two under paid guards nobody wants and having thier only two problems be pass blocking and run blocking,

Yes we have 50 mil to spend but when you start tossing around numbers like 10 mil that 50 mil goes away real fast and somebody is gonna be left out, We also need LB, QB, RB, Guards, CB, maybe Safety, so Yes we want Mack back but he has to 1st want to come back, and secondly dosent cost us the chance to re-sign possible FA or our current players, Gordon, Shaard, Hayden...ect

We want Mack back but not at the cost where it effects us in two or three other spots.

Good Solid centers can be had in the 3rd -4th rounds of the draft,

I see this as the best route for us to have Mack here long term.

I hope you're right because ultimately, that should be the goal.

Problem being, that doesn't fall under a poison pill scenario.

Some teams are close to the cap. they simply back load contracts because they can't give up huge guarantees now. It would put them beyond the cap.

We are in the unique position of having a LOT of cap room. It would be far more to our advantage to front load contracts now to leave cap room in later years with which to work.

It certainly wouldn't be a deal breaker, simply not the ideal scenario for us.

I don't really see how you lose here.

Nobody would pony up 2 first round picks for a C. There would almost be a 100% certainty that we would be giving him an 11+ mil contract for one season and one season only.

Then we would be in the exact same position next year no doubt about it. In this scenario, I believe almost everyone would agree that Mack will get offers in the FA market for long term deals.

If Mack refuses to sign a long term deal, we save over 1 mil in cap space and have a very clear indication that Mack has no desire for us to have the opportunity to sign him to a long term deal.

That gives us a year to address the C position knowing he doesn't want to be here. It's all in Macks court. If he refuses to sign a long term deal for us to match, the writing is on the wall. And we saved a mil+ to read that writing and have time to work out another answer.
