CalDawg, hope you are wrong. We seem to have leverage, and the agent looks like he is trying to engineer a lever he doesn't have at present. Successful auctions need two bidders to help the seller.

We can outbid the Rats. If Ozzie likes him, then I see that as confirmation of Mack's playing quality. Question is more about price point we are willing to pay, not who has a bigger wallet this year. I want Mack here, but not at an astronomical center grade price.

Nobody can make an offer that we cannot match. I doubt one will be made in lieu of that. I'm almost positive Mack will sign the tender and play one more year here. There was a slight turn around when HC, OC n OL coaches went west to see him. But he is not completely sold. After one season some of the stability issues will be resolved. Especially if we have some success and there are no firings made. We stand a better chance of making him an offer that he will agree to.

yeah, assuming he stays, all we can hope to do is show him that the ship is being righted and this is in fact the place for him.

I have not given up hopes of retaining him yet.

I don't see how it is possible that we lose him??? I don't think we will get a commitment out of him outside of signing our Tag Tender. So we got one more year to Sell him that this is his HOME! Not lost 99% sure he is here for the 2014 season.

Oh, we could. Each time we spend dollars, the amount of dollars in reserve is less. His agent and another team may wait until we sign a few more players.

Either way I am beginning to see this as a 1 year, $10 mil rental. Not sure I am happy about that.

I'll be even less happy if Mack starts saying he isn't going to negotiate contracts until after the season is over like he did last year. I didn't think this before when I said he might not take any offers and just play for us for $10 mil, but now I don't think he wants to be in Cleveland. This is based on some articles I have read where his agent has stated he can craft a deal we can't match. I now feel he won't take a offer because he doesn't want us to match it.

We've all read the article that talks about the agent saying he can "Craft" a deal that the Browns "can't" match.. I don't think that's possible. I believe that's an agent blowing sunshine up everyones skirts.

I do think it's possible for him to craft a deal that the Browns don't want to Match... That much I can see.

But that leaves the other team with a giant sized hole in their CAP to pay for a Center.. I guess we'll see.

As stated 99% sure he is here for 2014...do I wish it was for long term -sure. But forget agent, the key is that Mack wanted out when the Chud firing happened... as in the last straw. Now there is a ray of hope. We get him for 2014 which increases our chance for success. We get some success we will be the talk of the NFL. The entire team camaraderie changes - Mack might wish to finish this and sign a long term contract...or he might not - but more players that don't come from the Cleveland area will actually want to land here. I got news for you. Center is NOT the Straw that stirs the drink. Not saying its not important. We had a UDFA here in O'Hara who played RG then moved to NY and became Pro-Bowl status at Center! The skill set is not unheard of and rare. It will not be the end all if we lost him. Great to have you here but - If a team wishes to do something Stupid just to screw us... Go ahead I dare them to. Its a center what are they going to do up load a 15 mil contract for 2014 ON A CENTER...yeah they will last long in the position they hold for that team

He'll be here in 2014...he'll get into the UNIT. Only Lava is gone. Maybe a rookie or two added. I like our chances of him seriously negotiating with us next year if not...then Sayonara. Not a position to go OH NO - Greco is smart I really don't think we will lose much with him at center. I don't think it would take too much to UPGRADE on him at Left Guard. If I remember correctly 2 years ago - Greco was making the line calls temporarily as Mack was struggling!

Lets not have a fret over the Center position. Why do you think they are the least Drafted in the first round out of ALL THE OL POSITIONS! The skill set for a good one is not that rare!

jmho - I want him here but no worried about it like many.

Mack really liked last year's coaching staff.

If we manage to put together a good season, and he plays here, and finds that he likes the new staff, then we might stand a better chance of signing him next year.

With the expanding cap all centers will see an upgrade in money. Just make mack the highest paid center and get it over with. Cheaper to do it this year than wait for next year and he is worth it IMHO.

Maybe you and Eo are right. None the less, I might look to draft one of the better centers come round 4.

Sorry replacing 1st round Mack with a 4th rounder? C'mon man I'm tired of seeing injured QB's. Keep Mack, and use those picks on a OG upgrade.

I want to keep Mack but he has to want to sign. If we have to place the same tag on him again next year I believe his one year salary goes to 12.5 mil.

All I am saying is we might be smart to get a player of substance in here this year in case we can't keep Mack past this year.

and then there's this. While the current highest paid center is around 8 mil a year, this is a new year with higher CAP figures. It might be that Mack sets the new standard. Based on the interview that Farmer gave that is up on the main site, I'd suspect he's completely aware of that.

So, with that, I'd like to revise what I think Mack will be offered and will then be matched by the Browns.

I now believe it will between 9 and 11.5 million per year.

And it will indeed set the new standard for Centers. And to think, a few years ago, that was LT money. wow

As I said earlier in the thread, no smart GM will make Mack a priority, knowing the Browns will most likely match an offer. They should be focusing on the available FAs instead.

Mack might get some traction after a few days but not until this open feeding frenzy has died down.

I agree. I don't think you will see ANY movement out there on him until we've spent more of our available cap. I'm pretty sure that, even with our shopping thus far, we're still one of the furthest under the cap. Until we spend more, and a few GM's can get a false hope that we won't match, he'll sit quietly.

Once those offers do start to come in, though, he will then see what his market value is.

I think teams don't want to hold $10M of their cap room hostage for the next week. It's not our cap teams are worried about (or rather, they are) - but we're always going to have enough cap room this year to match any deal for Mack.

You'll see an offer from a team that still has $10M of cap room left after the frenzy is over.

Mack's process is going to be long and drawn out. He probably won't get an offer and probably won't sign his tender till training camp.

hehehe...really not a testimonial for keeping Mack - you realize that don't you Got news for you saw Mack in the wrong spot for a blitzing LB that had an open run to our QB just as much as Lava and Greco last season. I want him here for the continuity of the OL. he will be here 2014.

QBs get injured. In our past we had our share of Turnstiles - but lately it hasn't been the OL unit getting our QBs hurt. I betcha pure RB pass blocking is probably more to blame for any QBs hurt in the pocket then anything. Hoyer was hurt on a run situation...good decision bad excution w/slide. Campbell got a concussion on an illegal hit to the head and fumbled to boot. Held onto that ball way too long which is the culprit for most of our hits. Look how quick a Manning gets rid of the ball. Luck who gets hit way more than any of our QBs did in the last two years.

Pass blocking by the OL of course not perfect but not a major improvement needed.

What’s going on with #Browns center Alex Mack? I’m told 4 teams have been in contact on varying levels. Waiting for the frenzy to die down

He's going to be here. Just depends on if its a 1 year 10 mil or a multi year that we matched...

I doubt we would of transition tagged him if we didn't have every intention of matching...

Mack's job ain't to block lb's its to block the big in his face DT and NT. He doesn't get beat by them hardly ever and that is special considering we have some of the very best NTs in our division he plays against.

Knowing which LB is coming is the QB's job and matching up a HB, TE or FB to pick it up.

Exactly.

If I'm a GM of an opposing team, I'm just going to wait until next year.

didn't say we wouldn't. but its still a 1 year contract. would make him happy have that extra 2 mil. wonder if he would remember that next year?
