Ward is obviously better at stopping the run than he is in coverage. But he is not bad in coverage. He is among the best run stuffing safeties in the league, while Whitner is also good at this he is not as good and is worse in coverage.
I don't know about Whitner, didn't see enough of him to grade him out but I do not agree on Ward. Very seldom was he manned up on anyone of any significance in coverage.

Donte Whitner was drafted in 2006; he will turn 29 in July. T.J. Ward was drafted in 2010; he will turn 28 in December.
It's crazy that Whitner was drafted four years earlier and is only a year and a half older than Ward.

He was the youngest player ever drafted in the first round at the time IIRC.

I just do not see Winter as that much of a downgrade from Ward, if any at all.
He may actually fit Pettine's defense better,

I'm getting more tempted to go watch all the freakin' Bills games last season and see exactly how they use safeties. Maybe the scheme doesn't really call for paying someone top dollar to play in it in terms of safety. By the sounds of it, people say in Pettine's defense - the safety doesn't really get called into the box much, they cover side-to-side. Well, that basically eliminates, bluntly putting it, the need for TJ then as that's his largest asset while covering is his largest weakness.
Maybe we are getting too deep with this Byrd and TJ talk. Maybe the front office sees top dollar being spent elsewhere with a greater "positive impact" than to spend top dollar at safety, or sees value in Gipson/Bademosi or someone that "isn't" a free agent wanting top money to plug into their schemes.
Perhaps why Whitner seems to be in the forefront now, I don't see him wanting a huge top-dollar pay day. Food for thought but more and more we may have to be open to the possibility that either a Jarius Byrd, or a TJ Ward, will be a part of this team come season.

Amobi Okoye was drafted in 2007 and he's only 26.
I think he's the youngest player ever drafted.

"In any phase of life, any type of job that you have, if someone tells you that you suck at part of it, it's really going to pierce you," Whitner said. "And that's basically what they told me. Vic Fangio and coach Donatell basically said, 'This is part of your game that you suck at.' ... So, it's humbling. It did sting for a couple weeks."
Seven months later, it's clear Whitner responded by perspiring instead of pouting.
After 11 games, the fruits of his offseason work are on display. Among the 52 safeties who have played 500 snaps, Whitner ranks sixth in passer rating allowed (55.8), is tied for second in passes defensed (five) and is fourth in completion percentage surrendered (52.9). In addition, he has allowed one touchdown pass and has matched his career high with two interceptions.
http://www.sfgate.com/49ers/article/49ers-Whitner-has-improved-on-pass-coverage-5024848.php
Defending the pass game is something he made a drastic improvement on.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Hey, Farmer has been labled a "metrics" and numbers guy iirc, but so were LomBanner, so who the hell knows, but I think any D-player they're looking at will be from Pettine's wishlist too
That's not accurate.. Lombardi and more specifically, Banner were metrics guys.. Farmer wasn't supposed to be like that at all.
Farmer is more (supposedly) of a "can this guy play" kinda guy.

My biggest fear with a possible Whitner signing is the "last contract" thing....he goes from a SB contender to a rebuilding roster and signed his last fat paycheck.
Might as well put a couch under his ass. What does he play for now? From a motivational standpoint Whitner doesn't make much sense....
Who knows, maybe today's "leaks" that we're close to signing him are just a smokescreen to lower Ward's asking price

From the little I've gathered so far, Farmer definitely likes to play that game.

1. Motivation, Browns fan growing up...many family and friends love the Browns its his dream maybe. Lots of motivation and possibly the best kind...Love for team.
2. Who's better all three are good - Whitner seemed to have a break through year, what I like about it is he's still progressing he perspired rather than pout. Which tells me he has a hunger to get better regardless of age.
3. Ward has some good - I think he might be a better coverage than most of us give him credit for. I agree rarely did we see him in that role. By design for his weakness or design for his strength? Not much to go on but they were being competitive. I liked the way he covered during the Pro-Bowl. I thought they were all playing hard and several times I was surprised with his coverage.
Ward has some bad - I think last year was one of the few without an Injury that took him off the field for an extended period of time. Is that due to the new hitting rules so that no concussions will extend his playing time....or just a lucky year.
Setting yourself up for disappointment. Why dawgs say if this is the outcome I will be deeming the entire situation a big failure. Why do that. We don't know the D yet. We don't know how much better Gipson will get, he made an amazing leap last year no reason to think the progress will stop.
I guess we are so conditioned to failure...an ultra positive guy like me just don't get it. I never give up. Never will. Trust me I get knocked down...there are several here that get knocked down but they get up and kick butt!
Browns stuff is tough cause so much is out of our control. But I'm ready for this baby to turn ok. Whitner is from the area so he wants to come home. The rest as stated we got to earn the trust back from the NFL that we are not in disarray!

Man I like ward and all but this comment right here makes me think someone doesn't watch the whole game. How many times did he miss along the sidelines going for the big hit. Even more often the hit em with the shoulder, hope he goes down because I didn't wrap up? That's what bugged me about him. He has the choice to us his arms for a tackle instead of just his shoulder.
He would be elite if he wrapped up IMO

--Ward is not better in coverage than Whitner.
--I really wanted Whitner last time around. Of course, many people on whatever board I was on at the time thought he sucked because he played for Ohio State. He went on to be an outstanding player in SF and was a Pro Bowler.
--I think he slipped a bit last year even though the posted metrics crap indicates otherwise.
--I think Whitner will be cheaper than Ward and they are similar players. Whit might be a bit better in coverage, but he ain't great either. He isn't as dumb as Ward, that is for sure.
--Ward misses plenty of tackles. He ducks his head and whiffs quite a bit.
--Ward is overrated. And no, I ain't using purple. Well, I never use purple. If you are admitting to be sarcastic, the beauty of the sarcasm is lost. So............I am not being sarcastic. He is overrated. Tremendously.

it's not about the memories... it's about the stats.
his numbers in 2012 were
In terms of receptions allowed per snaps in coverage, Landry ranks 45th among all safeties with 1 Rec allowed every 16.2 snaps.
Just for some fun, T.J. Ward is FIRST in this category with one rec allowed every 45 snaps!. (Jairus Byrd ranks 6th)
When it comes to tackling efficiency, a ratio of missed tackles to tackles made, Landry ranks 20th among safeties with a tackle missed every 9.1 tackles made
T.J. Ward is second with a ratio of 17.5 - Byrd is first with a 19.8 ratio.
And that avg rec of 14.9 YPC ranks 66th among all safeties for Landry. (Ward is 20th, Byrd is 10th)
He's also 4th in run stop %.
I'll grab the 2013 stats later
Hunter + Dart = This is the way.

he made the all-pro honorable mention list too. he's a top5 SS at worst. that's just who he is whether you look at the stats or "just watch the game" everyone seems to be in agreement about it (local writers, national writers, national fans, most local fans) except for a handful of Browns fans (which is strange to me).

Don't waste your time....he's gonna throw out the type of garbage no matter what. He gets off on that kinda stuff....sad, really.
Back to Ward/Whitner.....
From all the reports I've seen/read, it almost looks like it is inevitable he is signing with the Browns today. Then there is this little nugget on his twitter account:
Quote:
Ran into my boy @joehaden23 last nite...
https://twitter.com/DonteWhitner
He's also following Mary Kay Cabot for some odd reason.....the big indicator!
Granted the twitter post was done on the 8th but that's when teams could negotiate. Again, I like Whitner but think he is a downgrade to Ward. IF we can match him next to Byrd and the cost to sign Donte is cheaper than TJ, than fine. I don't necessarily like it, but I understand it. If all we get is Whitner.....
Whitner is a Cleveland kid, went to Glenville and considered Cleveland a team he always wanted to play for.....those stories are always nice to hear.
I was surprised to see Whitner is 28 yrs old as of right now....I thought he was closer to 30+.

35-38mil would give us Revis (16mil), Byrd(8-10mil), Whitner (5-7mil) and Dansby(5-7mil). I mean, why not? Go for it, lol. THAT would sell each of the FAs to come here too. Still enough money for the rookie class and a decent FA OG or RB at 3-4mil. Draft Bridgewater with both 1st rounders, draft a WR2 at 35 and OG/RB/ILB in the 3rd/4th Am I crazy? This could be done Imagine a D depth chart of: DE Rubin/Winn NT Taylor/Hughes/Kitchen DE D.Bryant/A.Bryant OLB Sheard/Mingo ILB Dansby/Robertson ILB Skov/Carder OLB Kruger/Groves CB Haden CB Revis SS Whitner FS Byrd sCB Skrine

Just remember this: Assuming Polian is right as I listened to him last night on the way home, very interesting stuff.
Last 5 years? The deemed winner of the FA signings...HAVE NOT MADE THE PLAYOFF THE FOLLOWING YEAR!
I just wish us to fill some holes...not buy a freaking team for a one n done run!
Revis is said to be a Cap Casualty soon but he will not come close to the contract that he got before.
Whitner going to SF not Cleveland...they gave him a boat load of money you aren't going to blame him for that???
Again tough to compare upgrade downgrade until we actually see what Petting n DC have in mind for our Defense. I didn't watch Bills games but I remember the Ravens and Ed Reed came into his super star Status when Pettine was there.
One steady stay back FS and the other Ball Hawking.
Have we signed anyone yet. Usually the top guns go the first day?
Just wish for our needs to be filled. That is it. Sign our own drafted players don't go mercenary crazy cause that usually spells limited time to excel before getting into cap hell and disband!

pretty much what I saw. I just cringe when he is the only one in space between a big gain/td. it about a 50/50 chance he will tackle the guy.

I agree mostly, as I've argued against Revis in the other thread, but it would make only sense if we go all out like that, which we won't anyway.
Then again, I think I read somewhere that 14 starters in the last SB were FA signings, so there IS value to add obviously that can help any team.
I disagree somewhat on Revis's contract. It's actually a bad contract for him, as he's not protected against an injury. He makes more in base salary, but he traded that for insurance in form of a signing bonus. Also, if Sam Shield was able to get almost 10mil/year, then Revis wouldn't be far off the 16mil he makes the next seasons. Maybe he re-works his contract a little bit when he's traded and is willing to trade some of his base salary back for a signing bonus, but I have to admit, I'd rather take him with that deal he already has, as it is more club friendly. Maybe that's the reason for the trade rumors, maybe his agent wants some guarantee in there now? Who knows...
