Ward is going to average $5.5 million a year

That is less than Whitner. We don't know about the guarantees. If Ward ends up getting less than Whitner I don't like the signing at all. That doesn't mean I don't like Whitner as a player, just that I like Ward more.

Before ya get mad, you might want to think, what if we offered, say 7.5 mil a yr. and he wanted to walk. You can't force 'em to stay.

You think he was trying to sign with the Browns for 5.5? Think about it.

Do you really think he dismissed an extra $2M a year to go somewhere else?

Yeah, I don't get when people just look at the number and think that we didn't do anything. Could be we offered the same or more but he just wanted out. Could be that he didn't really fit what Pettine wants so they weren't aggressive. I wish TJ the best, but lets look at more than just a number to determine whether something is a good/bad thing or not.

If reports are true and we were talking with him since the combine, then something tells me he wanted to walk.

It's either that, or he just isn't good enough to make 7M.

Some time this week we'll have a better idea of if they can tag him next year. Some of that depends on what happens with Mack whether or not a tag will be available for Haden.

Yeah, we have quite a list of guys for next year. Sheard, Cameron, Haden and then some.

I imagine the franchise tag would be $$$$$ for CBs. It will be interesting. hopefully we sign Haden during this season while we have exclusive negotiations.

could also be he took a discount to play for a team with a high chance to sompete in a superbowl. I wouldn't blame him. Who doesn't want to play with peyten manning?! lol

I agree, some times the players just want to go elsewhere... read DQ.

Good luck TJ, always liked you, but if you did not want to be here then .... well ... bye,

This stuff happens every year,

so...Ward goes to a SB contender.

our "overrated" safety will be playing for the playoffs while we're still hoping we can go 3-3 in the division.

That's a big bummer. Younger and cheaper. Is Whitner really better? I hope so. Good luck, TJ.

It's either that, or he just isn't good enough to make 7M.

That's not the discussion, though. If you want to throw out the $7M figure because Whitner just got the deal, then do you think Whitner is worth $1.5M/year more than Ward? I certainly don't.

After reflection, you are probably right. Guess he just wanted to move on for whatever reason... oh well, Whitner is my safety now.

Yup... time to experience something else in the NFL. He's already seen dysfunction at every possible level, it's time to see what winning is like, and yeah, he just might have walked away from 2M per year for that.

He'll still be somewhat young-ish when that deal is up, and with playing for a winning team, his name should be a bit better known, and he could score one last big deal from there.... or, he could suffer along in near obscurity here.

That type of thinking sometimes backfires. We'll go on to a decent season and the Bronc's will slip off the map

I highly doubt it. Maybe if he was 35 and had already inked big deals. This was his first FA, I can't see him offering discounts and signing this quickly.

If he wanted out that bad, I think he would have been traded last year before the deadline.

Wow the front office really undervalued him that bad? I never said TJ were elite, but I have said he's a monster and a beast to have up in the box and to make some crossing offense people get up a little slower. If he could cover, then he'd be elite, IMO.

But couldn't see why we wouldn't throw him more than 5.5mil a year to retain him?

An older and declining Bethea getting as much as Ward is a complete joke.

I'm ok with Whitner, but would have preferred Ward even for the same money

No, but what I could be talked into believing is that he wanted 7+ mill a year and the Browns didn't want to pay that. Sounds like nobody else did either so he took the best deal he could get and since the Browns signed Whitner, they weren't about to plug another 5 mill into Ward. He may have done himself in..

Thank you. RT @NathanZegura: Ward deal shows that NFL doesn't value "box" safeties like ones who can cover or do both well.

I liked TJ when he was here but I think Hitner is an upgrade over TJ lacks tackling skills he just closes his eyes and launches himself at a target and misses too many times and must lack the leadership this coaching staff and front office wants in a 27/28 year old player and were will to pay 2 mill per year more for a guy that is said to have what TJ lacks

he just signed to a Super Bowl contending team.

so i guess pretty good. he's going to the playoffs next year.

we are still trying to find a way to at least go .500 in our division, let alone the w-L column.

so i guess what i'm trying to say is, you're wrong about Ward..again.

um the season hasn't started yet. let's review this after the season is over. Ward is going to play for a team that is going to probably be in the superbowl next year.

Yeah.........okay. I guess that is why he got such a lucrative contract.

Not only do some of you ridicule a poster who disagrees w/you while things are playing out, but then you refuse to even consider re-evaluating things after a bit of proof comes out that supports the other opinion. Soon, you will find another topic to start the same crap all over again.

You never learn.

support opinion? a SB team just signed our SS. not some 4-12, not an 8-8 team looking to get over the hump, a SB team. who valued signing Ward over this "upgrade" in Whitner.

thats a pretty strong supporting argument.

IMO Ward and his agent wanted out, and they got it. Good for him. Good in the box safety, who lacks back end coverage skills.

if Ward didn't want to be here, fine.

he took less money and is going to a SB team, while we paid MORE for a S coming from a playoff team to a trash team.

of course we have to pay more. Ward and DQ got the better end of the deal when it comes to competing for championships.

I've been on this board - old and new - for well over a decade...I can't for the life of me think of another instance where a single poster has driven down the quality of the board so much. Completely vapid, inane arguments with no substance that are clung to doggedly and repeated like he were Rain Man.

I put him on ignore awhile back and I still can't escape his hot air.

As for Ward...we either didn't think very highly of him or vice versa. I would've paid $5.5/year for him, but if he didn't want to be here, I can't really complain.

I keep reading that Ward wanted out. Did I miss something? Because, before today.........I kept reading on how he wanted to be here.

Swish was bad-mouthing Mack yesterday for wanting out and praising Ward for wanting to be here.

So, if I missed an article stating that Ward wanted out.........I will apologize. However, right now it sounds like an excuse as to why we did not keep Ward.

You aren't one of those guys like Swish, Super, Daman, DJ. cfrs, Memphis, and Super who can't admit that perhaps I was right and didn't deserve all the criticism they gave me...........are you?
