Thanks.

How do those numbers stack up in regards to how he compares to other running backs?

Is he being overpaid? Was it a bargain deal for Jax? Or, does it seem about right?

I have no idea. I saw one report that called his deal "Strong", while another was "LOL"

Okaaay...I started a thread about something factual, Ben Tate visiting Browns HQ today 3/12/14. It was summarily removed...whatever.

Anyway, both the PD and the ABJ say that a meeting is taking place. As I stated on my dead thread, I have concerns. His injury history combined with the money he's likely to ask for as the presumptive no. 1 free agent running back.

PD Article

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Browns are frontrunners to land Texans free agent running back Ben Tate, according to multiple sources.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Wednesday that Tate is already in Cleveland visiting with Browns, who's running game finished tied for 27th in the NFL last year. NFL Network also reported that the Browns are his most likely destination.

The Browns contemplated trading for Tate, 25, last season, but opted to wait for him to become a free agent instead.

Tate (5-11, 217) is a former second-round pick out of Auburn in 2010.

In 2013, Tate appeared in 14 games with seven starts after a season-ending injury to Arian Foster. He responded with 771 yards rushing and four touchdowns despite battling cracked ribs for much of the season. He was ultimately placed on injured reserve Dec. 19th.

Tate would be installed as the Browns' featured back, something they haven't had since they traded Trent Richardson after the first two games of last season.

There was a post in the "Signings/Re-Signings" thread saying that we would only sign Tate if it was a "show me" contract (the report was from Adam Schefter).

That type of contract is fine. If he doesn't want it there are other quality running backs out there.

Wait, we had a feature back on the roster when Richardson was here?? Did he get injured or something.

we got Lewis n Baker both smallish RBs...Tate would compliment them nicely. Tate would take the place of Trent. Lewis is in great shape.

it sounds like they are trying to hash out a deal and we should have him hopefully in orange and brown by tonight. We are the leading team to sign him to a short term deal where he can prove he will stay healthy.

If he leaves without signing... we won't get him.

I think we still need to pick up another RB.

I'm not sure we should bank on Baker or Lewis being on the roster. If we sign a running back, which seems likely, and draft a running back then at least one of those guys is a goner. And we still have Ogbonnaya (who is a great player to have on the roster because of his versatility).

This raises another concern. I know it's just Mary Kay saying it but can Tate hold up as the feature back, the bell cow every down guy? I remember reading a blurb in the past few weeks where Shananhan is reported to prefer a feature back as oppose to a running back committee. Is Tate that guy?

Baker probably odd man out. If on the roster more for K/O return.

If we draft a guy, I doubt it will be high. FA signing will stay (I assume). Lewis has to prove to coaches he is healthy n ready to play. I think Kyle will want him...catch and I think a good outside Zone block RB. Baker would be a good back up also.

Who knows Tate might just come in short yardage? Or share reps with Lewis. Rookie would have to earn his reps or go on the practice squad.

??? got to see who is here and how the coaches in the new system like them. If we sign TATE to a show me contract...he could be odd man out if the show is no go.

jmho

Cleveland Browns front-runners for Ben Tate

NFL Media's Aditi Kinkhabwala reported Tuesday that the Cleveland Browns went into free agency looking for help at safety, slot receiver and running back.

After locking up Donte Whitner and floating an offer sheet to pass-catcher Andrew Hawkins, the Brownies are on the prowl for that aforementioned backfield help.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Wednesday that Cleveland is the front-runner to land Ben Tate, the former Houston Texans rumbler that they've coveted for months. Tate is scheduled to visit with the Browns today and it wouldn't be a surprise if he's signed to a contract, per Rapoport.

The 25-year-old ranked as our No. 1 free-agent runner because of his combination of youth and potential as an every-down back. He exits Houston with relatively fresh legs, but his injury history makes durability a concern for any team signing him.

We also expect the Browns to use one or more of their 10 draft picks to bolster a backfield -- currently inhabited by the likes of Fozzy Whittaker, Edwin Baker and Dion Lewis -- that flatlined hard down the stretch in 2013.

In the latest edition of the "Around The League Podcast," the guys study the free agency picture with the help of NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport.

Baker was, by far, our best RB last year, and is a strong one cut runner ....... a trait that should fit the Shanahan offense quite well. He's not a dancer, he makes a cut and is gone.

He also showed solid hands catching the ball.

I think that he'll be a part of this team next year. I see no reason that he wouldn't be.Lewis could be in trouble, but even he might be an option for the team.

I think that the Redskins kept 4 or 5 RB (including a FB) on their roster last year, so I would expect a similar number this year here.

I'm less worried about the RB than I am about the OL. I'd like to see Mack return and a mauling RG brought in (FA or draft).

With that said, having Tate in our backfield would be nice.

I thought we let Fozzy go. But I see he is on our roster. I do not understand the comment o flat line down the stretch of 2013. 2 of the 3 weren't with us and the one that was did ok. McGahee is not with us and he was the go to guy.

But we also abandoned the run for the most part.

New OC, new system - I am pretty sure we will look at Lewis and Baker in camps. If so I am pretty sure they are going to be surprised at what we got.

Don't underestimate Lewis. A very very talented RB who was a disappointment - came to us last year in a Last chance situation and was making the most of it until the Injury. But...I know where he is working out - I know his workout partner. He is in the best shape of his life and he is determined to be a great RB in the NFL. I don't know if anyone saw him at Pitt as a Sophmore??? or Freshman...I forgot. Then he started to rely on his reputation and became a big shot and went no where!

We could have a gem...as long as we give him a long hard look I'm a believer that cream always rises to the top

I would much rather go w/Lewis, Baker, and a mid round rookie draft choice than bringing in Tate.

I liked this guy a couple of years ago, but the more I studied him........the less I liked.

what's your concern.. Injury?

He seems like the one cut and go kind of guy Shannahan likes.

I feel so dirty agreeing with Vers... but yeah rather than Tate (unless we can get him for a rookie price.. i know a shame how rthe NFL has devalued RBs) bring in a third round rookie and keep Lewis and baker.

Price.
Durability.
Availability of other running backs.
Commitment to him if we pay him big dollars, even if others are performing at a higher level.

I really like Baker and Lewis looks like major potential as a 3rd down back. I see no need to spend money on tate. If I am gonna take a back, I would just take my top rated back in the 3rd. Lots of good backs, not very bright to overpay for a FA RB in this stacked class.

+1. If the price was right sure Id be for it. I just don't want to overpay for the above reasons.

There aren't really that many other good guys left on the market. And the guys that did sign didn't get that match, so Tate will likely get a similar contract.

If the contract is low in guarantees I have no problem signing Tate.

Think of the Broncos back when Shanny the Elder was there,1000 yd.rushers where plug and play.Wherever they have been, the Shannihans have produced a good running game, and that has little to do with the RB.
Read, plant and explode runners are all over the place. You can find good ones late in the draft.
A team doesn't need big time, with the corresponding big salary, backs to successfully run the ball in thier scheme.

RB Ben Tate Plans To Meet With Browns Thursday

The Cleveland Browns aren’t messing around when it comes to free agency.

Running back Ben Tate plans to meet with the Browns on Thursday in Berea a source with knowledge of the free agent’s plans tells 92.3 The Fan. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the situation.

Tate was supposed to meet with the Browns Wednesday but had trouble getting to Cleveland because of the winter storm. He did not meet with the team Wednesday during the day or the evening the source said.

In 2013 Tate ran for 771 yards on 181 carries (4.3 avg) and 4 touchdowns for the Houston Texans and has been linked to the Browns as a potential free agency destination since last fall.
In 3 seasons, Tate has averaged 4.7 yards per carry and totaled 1,992 yards and 10 touchdowns, however has never played a full 16-game season.

An ankle injury sidelined Tate for the entire 2010 season. He missed a game in 2011 because of a hamstring injury, 5 games in 2012 due to hamstring and foot injuries, and 2 more games in 2013 due to a rib injury.

The Browns moved swiftly on Tuesday coming to terms on contracts with safety Donte Whitner and linebacker Karlos Dansby as well as signed Bengals restricted free agent Andrew Hawkins to an offer sheet.
Whitner, Dansby and cornerback Isaiah Trufant were introduced at a press conference Wednesday afternoon.
