I'm just saying and I'm not trying to Jinx it, but the last time we "Brought a guy home" to play for his hometown team that was a stud pro bowl player. It did not work out so well.

Jackson was not a position of strength. Ward, we can debate all day, but in the end it is a mild upgrade.

Really bad journalism at work there....they twist the numbers to make a point. I guess it's the old "the Browns are stupid" point they're trying to sell and gets clicks off

Florio,,, Pffft.... three days ago he claimed the Browns would be stupid and not spend cash to bring in good players, two days he said the browns were stupid for spending cash and were going to break the bank, they would be wise to wait and look for bargains.
He said we would be sucke dinto paying WQhitner's asking price of $8 mil a year... we paid $7 mil.
Florio is one of those guys that really does not work for a story, nor check his facts... he goes for the low hanging fruit .

What that article fails to mention is that the players we signed are also better players, at least for the scheme we plan to run. Also it was rumored that Ward was wanting more then $8 mill a year from the Browns and we got Whitner for $7 mill a year.

We had some bad luck .... but that was the last owner. I'm feeling a better vibe today. (I hope!)

At safety, the Browns gave $13 million in fully-guaranteed money to Donte Whitner as part of a four-year, $28 million deal. T.J. Ward, in contrast, signed for only $7 million fully guaranteed at signing, with another $6.5 million guaranteed for injury only until the 2015 league year. The total value of Ward’s four-year deal is $22.5 million — $5.5 million less than Whitner’s contract.
Interesting.

Yeah, it means our FO smarties are giving away money for free whereas smart FOs make players earn their contract. Same with Hawkins btw

well that's one way to look at it.. Another way is, they didn't like the skill sets and/or attitudes of Ward and Jackson as they relate to what they want to do on D, and let them get away in order to make room for guys they felt fit better and they paid them accordingly.
If that's the case (and I don't know if it is) I got no problem with it. I will if it doesn't work however.

Whitner cost Browns a lot more than Ward cost Broncos
Posted by Mike Florio on March 14, 2014, 8:48 AM EDT
The two biggest acquisitions made to date by the Cleveland Browns amount to an even-Steven swapping out of a safety and a linebacker for a safety and a linebacker.
And they paid plenty for the safety and the linebacker they signed, especially in comparison to the safety and linebacker they had. In both cases, the Browns selected an older and more expensive option.
At linebacker, the Browns dumped D’Qwell Jackson’s contract, which would have paid him $6.6 million in 2014. They’re instead paying Karlos Dansby $10 million in 2014, part of a $12 million fully-guaranteed contract. The 32-year-old’s deal averages $6 million per season through 2017.
While it was prudent for the cap-rich Browns to resist the temptation of going on a Day One overspending spree, some would say they’ve opted to dog-paddle by swapping Ward and Jackson for Whitner and Dansby. The goal moving forward should be to do something other than mildly upgrade positions of strength, and to instead shop for bargains at positions of need.
Not for nothing but this kinda confirms that his guaranteed money is 14 million..

T.J. Ward lands deal worth $14 million guaranteed
by Aaron Wilson March 14, 02014 Print This
During the first few days of the NFL free agent signing period, it became evident that Denver Broncos safety T.J. Ward’s newly-minted $22.5 million contract was extremely favorable.
Ward’s 60-percent ratio of guaranteed money relative to the total value of his deal exceeds that of any player signed during the first day of free agency.
His guaranteed money of $14 million is higher than all safety free agent contracts with the exception of New Orleans Saints safety Jairus Byrd.
In terms of a comparison, Ward got a similar deal to one of the top-rated free agents, Alterraun Verner (Tampa Bay Bucccaneers), in total value and guaranteed money. Verner plays cornerback, one of the most lucrative positions in the NFL.
Plus, Ward’s guaranteed money is included in the first two years of a front-loaded contract with lower salary-cap numbers and base salaries in years 3 and 4 of the deal.
The front-loaded numbers protect Ward from being a cap casualty later in his deal while more importantly allowing him to renegotiate after a few years if he continues to play at a high level outperforming the base salaries included later in his contract.
A former Cleveland Browns second-round draft pick from Oregon, Ward was a Pro Bowl and All-Pro selection last season.
He recorded 112 tackles, 1.5 sacks and two interceptions last season and has 342 career tackles, five interceptions, 3.5 sacks and five forced fumbles.

I think Ward is better than him,but at least he's good and with Dansby and Truffant the defense got an overall upgrade. Now bring on the draft and let's see what's cooking.
