How can I be upset? Because it is MY opinion.

Those moves would be a disaster. It would be a repeat of our own tragic history and would set us back even further. It's amazing how many times this franchise repeats the same mistakes over and over and over again.

Totally disagree.

I'm thinking that one of Bridgewater, Bortles, Garoppollo and Carr are going to be our future QB.

If we get Teddy B at 4 then the WR comes at 26 or 35. No difference.

You're saying that taking Watkins and signing Tate is neglecting the QB. Not true at all.

Just curious..............weren't you impressed w/Skrine last year?

Not as a full time #2, no.

To your concerns about guard...hard to say if the team reached out to any and maybe were rebuffed.

LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

Geez, I bet if we signed him within two hours someone would say we are moving too fast..

it will take as long as it takes. As of this morning on the news, they are reporting that he's still in town...

Gz how many overnight stays and visits does a running back need to determine if he likes/dislike this setting? Is Kyle on vacation and they're Skpying back and forth or something? Is it the number game? It must be the number game... I guess especially if it's a production-driven contract. I like that setup with Tate and ANY RB actually - so if waiting a few days to solidify such a thing... so be it.

Any thoughts on Davin Joseph? He's 30, a two-time Pro Bowler, and (I think) plays RG. Had a bad knee injury in 2012, but returned to start all 16 games in 2013. He's still available. I don't know if he fits Shanahan's OL scheme, though.

He's played like overpaid crap the past two seasons and that's why he was cut. He's not only trending downwards, he looks done.

Only stop gap RG remaining is JAX-cut Nwaneri, also 30yo. He'd be a small upgrade on Lauvao...but at this point: might as well go with the draft, although there aren't many good RG-prospects there. Trai Truner and Cyril Richardson might be the best pure RGs....maybe a RT convert like Mewhort or T.Richardson too

Anyway, as for Tate: I'd be ok with an incentive laden contract. If he doesn't perfrom or gets injured, he can be cut/replaced.

Part of me still wanted to see MJD as a Brown, but I understand. Would not stop here with RBs, sign one of Starks or Forsett as backup and draft a mid rounder. Can't have enough of them in TC imho, especially at low cost

I agree, it's the numbers. They probably agreed to principle and are just working out the structure. He been here 3 days I'd be shocked if he left now without a contract.

Cleveland Browns expect to sign RB Ben Tate by today, report says

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Browns are expected to sign free agent running back Ben Tate on Saturday, according to a report.

Tate, who's been in Cleveland since Thursday night, should be under contract today as long he passes his physical, John Telich of Fox 8 News tweeted Saturday morning.

Tate is coming off broken ribs and has battled other injuries in his four-year career, including a broken ankle that sidelined him his entire rookie season.

Telich reports that the deal is performance-based, and Tate "must prove and will get paid.''

Tate, 25, sent a signal Friday night that things were moving in the right direction when he tweeted a photo of the Terminal Tower lit up in red.

In Tate, the former Texans backup to Arian Foster, the Browns will have filled the void they've had at running back since they traded Trent Richardson last season.

He'll be the fifth unrestricted free agent signed by the Browns since the league opened for business on Tuesday. The others are safety Donte Whitner, inside linebacker Karlos Dansby, cornerback Isaiah Trufant and tight end Jim Dray. They've also signed Bengals restricted free agent wide receiver Andrew Hawkins to a four-year offer sheet worth $13.6 million, but the Bengals have until Tuesday to match.

Multiple reports say that the Bengals will let Hawkins defect to their AFC North foes, but Geoff Hobson of bengals.com reports it could still go either way.

A fifth-year pro, Tate, 25, has averaged 4.7 yards per carry during his three seasons. A second-round pick of the Texans out of Auburn in 2010, he broke his ankle in preseason and sat out his rookie season.

But he came back in 2011 and won the backup job to Arian Foster, rushing for 942 yards on 175 attempts for a 5.4-yard average -- third highest in the NFL. He also rushed for four touchdowns.

Plagued by lingering foot and hamstring injuries in 2012, Tate was limited to 279 yards on 65 carries, but still averaged a respectable 4.3 yards per carry. For comparison's sake, Richardson averaged 3.6 yards per carry in 2012 and 3.3 overall.

Last season, Tate battled through four cracked ribs much of the season to rush for 771 yards and four TDs in 14 games, including seven starts. Ultimately, he succumbed to the rib pain and was placed on injured reserve for the final two games of the season.

But he drew praise from interim coach Wade Phillips for playing in his next game after breaking the ribs, rushing for 81 yards on 22 carries in a loss to the Colts.

"He's a tough son of a gun - I've had star players not play with broken ribs,'' Philips told the Houston Chronicle.

Tate said last week that he's looking for a chance to step out of Foster's shadow and establish himself as a top five back in his own right.

"I think I can bring you an elite running back," Tate told Fox 26 in Houston on Friday. "I've learned a lot being behind Arian (Foster). Definitely, when I'm healthy I think I'm an elite running back in this league, and I feel like I can show my abilities and my numbers and my play will speak for itself, and guys will be able to see that I am a guy who is a top-five running back in this league, which I believe once I get out there and get to show that on a consistent basis."

Ya but that doesn't have anything to do with Steve Smith specifically... I mean... whoever their WR is has a good shot of having a career day against us right?

sadly...thats a good point.

Bleeds and Swish??? How so considering we played them close in both games last season and split the games. What career stuff. We handled them pretty well no time to look up the game stats.

Usually the way it goes is if we signed him it would be...man we spent that money on a old over the hill slot WR who is more bark than bite. But he gets signed by the Ravens all of a sudden he became a pro bowler...lol Got to love you guys but this are not that bad.

We just upgraded our Coverage a bit - We'll see how this turns out.

jmho I love the prospects of Hawkins in the slot - Gordon even Little out there Cameron. Travis B and Lewis/Baker and the draft for more. Blocking TE who can catch. Hoyer starting possibly a Franchise rookie prostpect. Teams will fear us not the other way around.

That's the thing. The 3 OL the Chiefs had hit the market signed up elsewhere really quickly. In fact, how many OL signed with the 1st team they visited? I know it was a lot of them.

This team cannot have the greatest of reputations right now. Maybe it doesn't bother some players, but it probably does bother others. Maybe some just said "No thank you" to a request that they come to Cleveland for a visit. OL are often some of the smarter players on a team ....... and we have had trouble attracting free agent OL. Coincidence?

Let's look at the OL who have been signed so far.

Branden Albert to Miami on 3/10/14
Eugene Monroe re-signs with Baltimore on 3/11/14
Jason Veldheer to Arizona on 3/11/14
Donald Penn OT Still available
Brian De la Puenta C Still available
Breno Giacomini to NY Jets 3/12/14
Travelle Wharton G Still available
Anthony Collins to Tampa Bay 3/13/14
Jon Asamough to Atlanta 3/11/14
Zach Strief OT Still available
Zane Beadles to Jax 3/11/14
Austin Howard to Raiders 3/11/14
Jonathan Goodwin C Still available
Kyle Cook C Still available
Rodger Saffold Re-signs with St Louis 3/12/14

Those are the OL listed in CBS's top 100 free agents. 6 are still available. Overall, 9 have signed new deals. 6 agreed to a new deal before the 1st day of "official" free agency. March 12 opened the league year, and allowed free agents to officially sign. Since that day, 3 more have signed.

So, most of these guys decided where they wanted to be, and went there immediately. 2 guys re-signed with their former team.

We may have contacted them, and had their agents say "don't call us, we'll call you if we can't find a team ...." We just don't know. The Browns only confirm visits, not who they invited in.

Where does Denver and New England, year after year, even after paying Manning and Brady, get all the cap money to sign top tier free agents? And they still maintain depth.

That's why I wish we had guys like Ozzie and Reese as GM. They've done their jobs for years now and do not need to impress anyone anymore.

I really think the biggest problem of any GM here has been that he tried to show the rest of the NFL that he's the smartest guy around. This pissing match mentality leads to ignoring the obvious moves to be made and instead outsmarting and getting prospect or "my guys I found" happy.

Look at Reese and Ozzie, they don't need to sign 10 UDFAs to the roster hoping that one studs out and then say "look at me" (the funny thing is that Ozzie even found the better UDFA with Marlon Brown last offseaon than LomBanner with anyone of their dozen, lol). They plug off PROVEN vets every FA and just improve their team...Dumervil, S.Smith, D.Smith, Canty, E.Monroe etc etc

dj...about showing the rest of the NFL how smart our GM is...I don't get that sense with Farmer one bit.

About wanting a Ozzie or Reese as GM...they had to start somewhere and this is Farmer's beginning...his start.

Some of us forget where the Browns management and coaching staff are starting from 2014. They are young and inexperienced and we are going to have to live with that. They will make mistakes, but you hope that they learn from their mistakes.

I look at Farmer and Pettine and realize this is a new beginning...again. If our owner, the media and our fans have the fortitude to endure the process...the process of starting over...but this time, allowing our young GM and Coaching staff to mature and grow into their jobs, this could be the best shape the football side of the franchise has been in, since 1999.

I don't wish for anyone else's GM or HC...I just want to see everyone give these guys the time needed to turn the Browns into a winning franchise. I'm happy with what we have and the job they have done so far.

Give it time..

Not to be the Anti Negative Nancy here, but are you absolutely sure they are making mistakes?

I mean, I get that what they are doing may not be the way you would do it, but then you don't have access to all the information that they have either. And my guess is that you don't have all the details of what they want to do either. So perhaps if you knew everything they know, you'd make similar decisions.

You don't believe that you know everything they do, do you?

Yeah they did. But it seems they started without the feeling inside that they needed to impress anybody. They started out with the feeling inside that they needed to build a winning team.

Now I'm not saying Farmer is outsmarting himself in an effort to cover his own feelings of inadequacy, but I am saying that I'm not so sure he is focusing on team needs from the right perspective.

It's easy to throw big money at proven vets in FA. It's something else altogether to focus on upgrading the lesser skilled positions of need with the smaller contracts of those positions. Paying an extra $1million on a $10million a year player is not that big a deal, but paying an extra $1million on a $3million a year guy is WAY overpaying him. That's where it gets tricky and I believe the lack of experience with that causes over thinking and a reluctance to pull the trigger. Hence, we don't get that guard we need so badly.

I wonder how Patriots fans felt back in the 2001 off-season ..... when Belichick was signing "bums" like Mike Vrabel, who was such a bust in Pittsburgh ..... David Patten who couldn't make it in Cleveland.

True, nobody does. To jump (panic ?) all over Farmer for not signing everybody we think should be on our team is simply impossible. It also is to overlook the draft coming up and how it and FA fit into the "Master Plan". Will we fill all elements? Probably not, but we should field a team next season much in accordance with Farmer-Pettine vision for it...

People can say what they will, and they will.

However, there are obvious positions of need that have been ignored. At some point people grow weary of the wash, rinse and repeat we continue to see. So I certainly understand the frustration.

I also feel it's short sighted for people to respond in a negative manner to those who compare our GM to other GM's. They have the same jobs, on the same levels and as such should be expected to perform in like fashion.

I mean if a semi truck driver crosses the medium and crashes head on into a family of five killing them all, does he get a free pass because he's a rookie driver?

Okay, maybe a bit extreme, but everyone who is an NFL GM is held to the same standards IMO. I don't believe you simply give someone a free pass. If Farmer does poorly, I'd be more inclined to blame the one who hired him than Farmer himself though.

I don't know what motivates Farmer but I mean, thus far I've seen several comparisons between Farmer and Newsome. If he's reading that stuff, it could be a weight on his shoulders that you and I may not understand.

Look, I'm not trying to make excuses for Farmer, he may end up being another Phil Savage* for all I know.

But, perhaps giving him a break might be in order. Let's see what he can cook up after he gets all the ingredients together. There is plenty of time to beat the living poo out of him later.....

No, I don't believe that I know everything they do. I know nothing really. Which is why there is no way I would do it. I don't have a way. I don't know enough. Even if I did have all the information on players and contracts I still wouldn't have my own way because I don't know football well enough.

But I do know football well enough to know positions of great need opposed to lesser needs. I know we lost our starting guard and the good ones in FA are now gone. Getting at least an average guard would have impressed me. Settling for a lower tier guard because that's all that's left disappoints me.

When I see all this focus on a high dollar RB like Tate, (which is a mistake Heckert made with TRich), when so many good RB's can be had in the middle draft rounds I'm disappointed. Disappointed because the focus could've been on the guards or maybe a RT or a viable starting CB.

Then there's the time spent chasing Revis who commands $12million a year on a one year contract. Yeah, it would be great to have him. But at that money and only for one year?! That time could have been much better spent.

The OL is so much more important than a high dollar RB or a CB of that value. We have Hoyer and will probably sign another vet QB and maybe even draft one. We have to protect our QB's. Starting out of the gate with our starting RG missing is hard to digest for an old dawg who's watched us use all three of our QB's each year. Now that's not all on the OL. You need a QB who can make quick decisions and accurate throws. But if we're ever to have a running game and success at QB then we'd better be focusing on that OL especially since we just lost a starter and have no backup who is worthy of stepping in.

No Daman, I don't think I know it all.

And before I sound too negative I applaud the Whit and Dansby signings. We filled two areas of need with upgrades over the last guys. That was some quick and decisive moves by Farmer and deserves cred for that.

dub...teams such as the Browns, have to pay more to land free agents that they need to fill a position or upgrade a position...just a fact about free agency the fans need to live with.

You want to be a penny pincher in free agency...given the situation in Cleveland, the best players won't sign with the Browns if we don't pay the price.

Some of us act like it is our money that Farmer and Pettine are spending. Do you really think that Haslam is not getting a final say?

It's Haslam's money, not our money and he will spend it as he wishes...not as you and I would like him to spend it.

As for that OG...it will be addressed...relax.

Only because they're both black. Farmer has no track record with which to compare those two. For some reason there's still a lot race consideration these days. Might as well throw Obama in there just to round out the conversations.

I'm not busting his ass at all. I'm not a hater and don't give up on anyone that fast. But as a fan I'm allowed to be disappointed from time to time. Right now he's shown as much good as he has anything else. I'm good.

He's got a long way to go, and if Haslem stays true to form, a short time to get there.

After a whole season as the top dawg while working with his HC they'll have a much better idea of what they're doing next time around.

It's amazing how many times this franchise repeats the same mistakes over and over and over again.

What makes it especially amazing is that each time it's a different set of people making the same mistakes the last guys made.

What mistakes have they made?

Any thoughts of Ryan Fritspatrick in to back up hoyer. Less money than Schaub, He would understand his role yes / no thoughts

No. Even though he was in Buffalo with Pettine, I don't want any part of him.

Just a heads up, Pettine was only in Buffalo last year. Fitzpatrick was on the Titans last year. That means no Pettine connection. Thank god.

They have not made any mistakes yet. They are just setting up their angle of attack if the Browns don't select Bridegwater or trade up to get him.

... there are obvious positions of need that have been ignored...

Pit: How can you say that without knowing what their plan is? And please, don't say that they don't appear to have a plan. What appears to us to be a position in need, may in their mind, better be addressed through trade, late cuts, or the draft. These guys, while "rookies", are still professionals, while we not knowing the context, sit on the bench...

As for the wanting to win...I have no doubt that Farmer wants to win, do you?

No mac. I think he wants to tank the organization and move it to Spokane. what the hell kind of question is that?!

Farmer is not signing free agents on his own...he has input from Pettine, going after the type of players Pettine wants on the team. I see Farmer and Pettine as a team, working together, not giving a damn about personal ego.

I sure hope so. But just like you're not going to pretend to know what Ozzie and Reese were feeling inside, you can't pretend to know that neither Pettine or Farmer don't give a damn about personal ego. We're not in anybody's head.

What you describe is exactly what we all hope is the manner in which they work together. I'll expect that it is the case unless/until something shows otherwise.

dub...teams such as the Browns, have to pay more to land free agents that they need to fill a position or upgrade a position...just a fact about free agency the fans need to live with.

Not sure how you got any of that from my post other than maybe the very last line where you think I'm upset enough that I need to relax. I'm not.

The amount of money means nothing to me. I was talking about the no-brainer approach to the difference in perspective to the high-dollar contracts as opposed to the smaller ones.

Although I don't care about the money either way you can bet any GM does. To over pay 10% on a huge contract is not such a big deal because you're getting an impact skill player who can win you games. But to over spend by 30% on those smaller contracts for OL and backups is. Not to me but to a GM. What I said is that being too careful to not over spend on those smaller contracts causes enough of a delay in the decision that players are gone before you've given yourself a chance to compete for them.

That's just my belief. It may be way off-base. If I knew all the facts I'd state them. All I have is an opinion.

when so many good RB's can be had in the middle draft rounds I'm disappointed

I laugh everytime someone post something like this. Or " good backs are easy to find". We have been doing that since the return, and they all have failed. IMO, if a good proven back is available, you take him. Then you draft a guy, and see if he works.

Tate is a good back.

I didn't say they "didn't have a plan". I'm simply stating that as of now, key needs have been ignored. I believe they could answer the G position in the draft, but I would doubt the other scenarios you provide seem very realistic to land a starting RG.

And I know you can look on our depth chart, but the only real possibility is Pinkston. And the depth beyond that is rather dismal. All we can do is look at things as they currently stand and state what we have seen.

I would like to have seen a "bird in the hand" signing at RG. Sure you can draft a RG, but often times they aren't simply "plug and play".

Having seen such things unfold before, I believe it's quite natural for much of the fan base to be somewhat skeptical. I hope, as I expect everyone does, that an answer can be found at RG. But as it stands now, the pickings are slim and you can't "plan on one falling to you" in the draft.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Not replying to you, but what about Gilkey? Who knows, he's a beast, and now has some experience. I'm not saying he will, but you have to take him into account when talking about bird's in hand. New scheme, who knows?

Gilkey will be lucky to make the roster next season....

He shouldn't have made last season's roster being the project he was. He was a main reason why we had to endure Cousins at RG for two games, and he absolutely sucked, so what does that tell you about Gilkey? He was officially our 4th OG, but was nowhere near ready. Another example of failed depth, plugging in PS players on the 53 that came back to hurt us.
