Hey guys, most of you know about this. For those who don't: I participate in a month long mock draft leading up to the real draft as Browns armchair GM. The other GMs mostly are diehard fans from their teams too, just like me and most know their football (and their team), just like me, lol.
There will be 4-6 picks a day with the tempo picking up with the rounds passing. I like to collect as many thoughts and input as possible from my fellow armchair scouts on here for the selections, so don't be shy to post your thoughts and criticisms etc.

The mock has actually already started over the weekend, but I was away and didn't have the time to post it yet, here's where we are as of now:

Round 1:

#1 Falcons (from Texans) - Jadeveon Clowney, DE, South Carolina
#2 Rams (from Redskins) - Jake Matthews, OT, Texas A&M
#3 Jaguars - Teddy Bridgewater, QB, Louisville
#4 Browns - Blake Bortles, QB, UCF
#5 Vikings (from Raiders) - Derek Carr, QB, Fresno State
#6 Texans (from Falcons) - Khalil Mack, OLB, Buffalo
#7 Buccaneers - Sammy Watkins, WR, Clemson
#8 Raiders (from Vikings) - Greg Robinson, OT, Auburn
#9 Bills - Taylor Lewan, OT, Michigan
#10 Lions - Justin Gilbert, CB, OK State
#11 Titans - Anthony Barr, OLB, UCLA
#12 Texans (from Giants) - Johnny Manziel, QB, A&M

As you can see, there have been some trades and all of them have been fairly cheap. So cheap that it caused some discussions. ATL only paid a 2nd to go to 1st ovr, but the HOU GM pretty much begged for ANY offer. My bigger issue though was the recent uptrade for Manziel. HOU paid 33+37 for the 12th overall. Value chart is actually close, but I think this is a very unrealistic trade, more so than the 1st one imho. Anyway, keep in mind that we are only allowed to trade picks from this draft to keep it as realistic as possible...no players, no future trades. So that was a factor too, but those are the rules. All in all I still think it's an interesting mock so far.

As for my Browns pick, as you can see it came down to Bortles and I probably was never this "meh" about one of my picks ever since doing this. Pure need driven pick. My BPA was Robinson and I contemplated Dennard, who's still out there and I might try to trade up for if he keeps falling. I was really close to select Robinson, but I realized that it would only delay the inevitable: a QB selection. I was hoping for Teddy, but he got picked right in front of me. I'm not a Carr or Manziel fan. Bortles was 2nd on my QB list with a significant enough gap between him and the others, so I gambled on him, although I don't think he's worth the 4th overall from a pure value standpoint. My first choice was to trade down too, but I got zero offers. Really felt stuck and I think this could happen to Farmer too...

Hate away, and what's your suggestions from here on out?

No hate here Django,

The only thing I would criticize is your lack of integrity in the pick. You need to do this like it is your job on the line, because Farmer's is. If you don't think Bortles is worthy of the #4, then "NEED" be damned. You better have conviction in a pick as a potential All Pro, because if you pass on a needed QB, but your pick becomes an All Pro, then you are a genius and don't lose your job. If you take a player you think might be the best available at his position, but not ranked high enough to take when he is taken and your gut is right, you lose your job...

Really, that is all I have to say about your actual pick. I am sure you have your reasons for ranking him where you do.

I personally have my top 4 as Johnny Manziel, Teddy Bridgewater, Sammy Watkins and Jake Matthews, but I am biased in what I personally see in these kids on game film. Two people watch the same exact film and can see two totally different things.

Since Manziel and Watkins were both still on the board, one of them would have been my pick personally.

You are absolutely right. Here's a recap of my "thought process" and why I said I felt "stuck".

Normally, I'm all about BPA, so Robinson would have been my pick, although I like Schwartz, who I think is over-hated among Browns fans. So he would start out as a OG, which he absolutely can play (was a HS star at OG). That was problem number one: value down the road was greater than short term and in a top5 pick I want BOTH.
Problem number two with Robinson: system fit. He's athletic enough, but not sure you need studs for a WCO to work.

That's where QB came into play again, it's simply a much bigger value position than OG/OT. You say "integrity" and that's a point, I'd say you can't draft "not to lose". The main job of a GM is to assemble a TEAM, so there are instances where you take a need over BPA, especially when we're talking QB position. We simply need one and we can't go into the season only with a career backup Hoyer, who's coming off knee surgery to boot and a bunch of mid round hoepfuls. We simply needed more upside at the QB position.

Put differently: I think I have a better chance at finding a better OG in the upcoming rounds to play day one than QB. Thus, this pick was with the draft "as a whole" in mind, not in a vacuum.

I hope I could clarify. I know some would have preferred Manziel or Carr, but I really think our first pick HAS TO BE a QB...

I could definitely see us taking Bortles, and I could also definitely see it being difficult for teams to trade down in this draft because of the great depth of talent. Both would seem to me to make sense.

Hey BpG, don't get this wrong, I respect you as a poster, but I have to bluntly say that I'd hate that draft for us. You picked a bunch of guys that actually made my avoid lists. I obviously like the Robinson pick, but it actually proves my point of what happens when you draft (interior) OL early. You end up reaching for the 10th best prospect at CB and WR. I'd rather have a top 3-5 WR and CB and still grab a top 5 OG in the mid rounds. Better odds, maximizing value at different positions.

Would take Lee over Benjamin, especially as WR2.

Roberson, Latimer are over-drafts imho. Roberson on tape was the worst of the 3 Gators CBs...and I simply don't like XSF's tape, it's pretty bad and others on here have seen the same. He might be the most overrated player in this draft for me. He's not even close to a top50 pick imho. Not sure why Cyril Richardson took such a hit, but XSF is still up there. Both have struggled and are one dimensional interior OL only. Little flexibility, questionable ceiling, I see bad value all around.....two WRs and no ILB yet?

That said, here's an update, just one more pick got in. Rams took Haha...

Round 1:

#1 Falcons (from Texans) - Jadeveon Clowney, DE, South Carolina
#2 Rams (from Redskins) - Jake Matthews, OT, Texas A&M
#3 Jaguars - Teddy Bridgewater, QB, Louisville
#4 Browns - Blake Bortles, QB, UCF
#5 Vikings (from Raiders) - Derek Carr, QB, Fresno State
#6 Texans (from Falcons) - Khalil Mack, OLB, Buffalo
#7 Buccaneers - Sammy Watkins, WR, Clemson
#8 Raiders (from Vikings) - Greg Robinson, OT, Auburn
#9 Bills - Taylor Lewan, OT, Michigan
#10 Lions - Justin Gilbert, CB, OK State
#11 Titans - Anthony Barr, OLB, UCLA
#12 Texans (from Giants) - Johnny Manziel, QB, A&M
#13 Rams - Hasean Clinton-Dix, S, Alabama

No way the falcons would trade up for that little... and the Texans GM (real GM) would get killed if he traded down for only a 2nd and lost out on Clowney... The trade up isn't as bad...

I'm fine with your pick... I like Bortles... dunno if he'll be better than Manziel... but either would be a tough call.

you could have gone with Mack or Watkins and I wouldn't have been too upset... but I think Bortles or Manziel were the picks with where you sat.

Carr at #5 overall is ajoke IMO.

I understand. I didn't draft Benjamin so it threw off my entire game plan. In regards to Roberson, I agree he wasn't the guy I wanted but I didn't want to get stuck with a 5'8 corner for our #2 so I did reach on him. I do not agree that Latimer is a reach. There were at least 3 teams behind me in the same round that were verbally upset he was gone.

I thought that the WR's were vastly over drafted in the draft I have been doing. I wasn't about to get stuck with yet another 5'8 slot guy.

I honestly do not want to end up with Garappolo, but I really thought that Manziel would be there with my #26 pick. If I had to do it over again I would have just bit the bullet and taken Manziel at #4

Maybe... I think he'll be somewhere in the 1st round, but top 5? I dunno...

IF we end up taking an offensive lineman at #4, I would love for this draft..I like most of you would prefer Lee to Benjamin at #26, but the rest is great imho.

Thing is, I don't believe Garoppolo will be there in the 3rd, nor do I think Roberson will be there with that second 3rd.. I would take both of those picks right where they are, even if we took Manziel at #4 and Roby at #26. They are value picks at that point. Roberson had an off season, but I attribute it to his injury. I think he would make a great #2.

Everything I read was that he had been battling a PCL strain(I think) or some sort of knee strain the entire season. He was the tallest, best corner left. Opinions on Jimmy G vary quite a bit, I think where I drafted him is exactly where he should get drafted. Latimer is going to be this years Keenan Allen so he is alos probably right where he should be.

With all of that said, I should have taken Manziel. It was foolish of me to think no one would trade up. The Houston Owner basically gave up the rest of his draft to get him. Clowney and Manziel would be a legendary haul in Houston.

#3 Jaguars - Teddy Bridgewater, QB, Louisville
#4 Browns - Blake Bortles, QB, UCF

#13 Rams - Hasean Clinton-Dix, S, Alabama
#14 Bears - Eric Ebron, TE, North Carolina
#15 Steelers - Mike Evans, WR, Texas A&M
#16 Cowboys - Aaron Donald, DT, Pittsburgh

Uptrade for Dennard? Who'd be in if it "only" costs a 3rd? The question becomes is Dennard > Fuller + 71 (Skov? Brooks? Mewhort?)
On that cbs ranking I don't like many of thoe 50-100 guys, so maybe it's worth it? What doy ou guys think? Dennard is one of the few CBs that has played a lot of press man. Fuller, while I think is physcial enough, has played in a zone scheme at VT.

Otoh, I really, really like M.Lee too, who could fall to 26 or come close enough for a cheap uptrade. He's just a great football player who does the little thing so well.

Unrelated and yfi, my RB targets are Hyde, Freeman, Sims and J.White somewhere between the 3rd and 5th depending on value.

Hmm...thoughts?

You are planning to take an OC who could also slot in at OG? Swanson, Richburg likely with the 2nd pick in the 3rd round? I really wouldn't want to give up that second pick in the 3rd, as that is where I'd like Carlos Hyde. IMHO, you sit at #26 (as tempting as it would be to move up for Dennard). Perhaps CJ Mosely falls to #26; that would make a nice problem for you...

I like Dennard, and if it only costs us a 3rd, I don't see why not doing it. Bird in hand is better than a bunch in the bush. Dennard brings us a starting CB along Haden. Skrine plays the slot guy. Shores up a lot on the defense

This is one of the worst line backer drafts I can remember. I wouldn't take on in the first round. If you look at recent history ILB is a devalued position. Aside from Mack, you have Barr talked about as a top 10 pick? Mosely is a 2nd rounder at best.

I dunno, I'd rather take Mad Max from Michigan State late than add a 1st round ILB.

I agree actually, but I don't want to trade up for CJ Mosley. Dennard is a CB, sure you just mixed them up there edit: guess you responded to bb32's suggestion, got it

My OG/OC targets are Steen and Linsley from the 4th on. I liked (and still do as a stash pick) B.Thomas, but he tore his ACL and is now a "punt pick" selection, who I'll consider later on.

I wouldn't ditch a third to go to Dennard from Fuller. However, if you want to, you'd better do it quick because the Jets would very likely take him or Cooks.

Nah I was talking about this guy. I know he is a "Two down" linebacker, but he's smart, hardworking and a leader from a winning program. I think he's projected to go day 3, which IMO is way too low.

His perceived deficiencies are things that can be fixed. I'd rather take him late than, Mosely in the first round. Personal prefference, I know.

I agree again, he's fully on my radar, rest assured.

My problem right now is if I move up for Dennard or not...

I wouldn't ditch a third to go to Dennard from Fuller. However, if you want to, you'd better do it quick because the Jets would very likely take him or Cooks.

Let's see, 9 picks left till 26. The prospects I like at 26 are Dennard, Fuller, Z.Martin, Lee, Beckham and Matthews. I'm not convinced by Mosley as a system fit. I'm torn on him, as there's enough to like him, but after picking Bortles at 4, I don't feel like making another pick that high on a player that I'm not 100% sold on.

So, I need 3 other players to get picked. Jernigan? Nix? Pryor? Ealy?

Otoh, I feel there's a slight drop off from Lee to Beckham/Matthews and Dennard to Fuller. If I do this uptrade, I'll probably look to trade down from 35 to re-gain a 4th...or maybe trade up again if M.Lee falls beyond 20. How does Bortles, Dennard and M.Lee sound? Of course the cost would be burning both 3rd rounders, but if I can still get Skov + Steen in the 4th? Hmm, risky, but might be worth it, no?...

Actually I like Borland and Skov better than Mosely, one of them will be available in the 2nd IRL and Skov will most likely be available in the 3rd in this mock.

I would focus on CB at #26...Roby or WR...

Very much doubt Skov makes it out of top 75.

If Dennard lasts, pretty obvious...I would start PMing every GM at this point on until he is taken and offer a 4th rounder to move up. Someone might bite.

IRL I agree 100%, but we are talking about a mock draft where most of the participants are looking at draft site rankings lists to choose who they are taking...Most have him ranked on average around 90-120...Most of these mock drafters don't watch any film, they simply choose a list and start marking off players.

Oh well, Dennard is gone. Saints moved up for him from 27 to 17 and paid their 2nd rounder (58th) they also swapped 3rds (Saints get to move up from 91 to 79 to balance out the value). Basically the Ravens traded down from 17 to 27 and 79 to 91 and got an extra 2nd for it. Good deal and probably more than I would have been willing to pay.

If the Jets go Fuller now, then I'll have to punt CB. He's probably the last CB that has a shot at upgrading CB2 from day one. My next targets would be EJ Gaines, R.Reynolds and Mitchell in the mid rounds...

Hey guys, with Dennard off the board I'm thinking about an uptrade for Zach Martin. Who's on board?

Reasons:

1. He's really, really good and can probably play all 5 OL positions. Incredibly smart and alert. ZBS fit

2. With Mack long term status uncertain, we need more good OL, especially with a rook at QB.

3. or as nflc.com's profile put it:

Bottom Line
Athletic, smart, competitive, dependable college left tackle whose length dictates a move inside, where he has plug-and-play ability in a zone-blocking scheme. One of the cleanest prospects in this year’s draft.

If you don't believe me, watch him vs Stanford and Bama. Zero pressure, he owned his opponents. The tape is night and day to XSF, who's ranked close and many want us to draft, which I hope we don't.

Depends on the price...The last trade cost a 2nd rounder, I certainly wouldn't do that..Actually have a hard time with a 3rd as well..If it is a 4th, then go for it. That would be a great pick up imho.

I am no longer sold on XSF in the first or second round. Martin is worth the pick at #26 (or earlier for a 4th rd'er). Pryor should go before #26, but he would be a great pickup there. Instead of Martin, I would take Richburg OG/OC in the third. I still like Mosely at #26, or the best CB...

Update:

Round 1:

#1 Falcons (from Texans) - Jadeveon Clowney, DE, South Carolina
#2 Rams (from Redskins) - Jake Matthews, OT, Texas A&M
#3 Jaguars - Teddy Bridgewater, QB, Louisville
#4 Browns - Blake Bortles, QB, UCF
#5 Vikings (from Raiders) - Derek Carr, QB, Fresno State
#6 Texans (from Falcons) - Khalil Mack, OLB, Buffalo
#7 Buccaneers - Sammy Watkins, WR, Clemson
#8 Raiders (from Vikings) - Greg Robinson, OT, Auburn
#9 Bills - Taylor Lewan, OT, Michigan
#10 Lions - Justin Gilbert, CB, OK State
#11 Titans - Anthony Barr, OLB, UCLA
#12 Texans (from Giants) - Johnny Manziel, QB, A&M
#13 Rams - Hasean Clinton-Dix, S, Alabama
#14 Bears - Eric Ebron, TE, North Carolina
#15 Steelers - Mike Evans, WR, Texas A&M
#16 Cowboys - Aaron Donald, DT, Pittsburgh
#17 Saints (from Ravens) - Darqueze Dennard, CB, Michigan State
#18 Jets - Marqise Lee, WR, USC
#19 Dolphins - C.J. Mosley, LB, Alabama
#20 Cardinals - Calvin Pryor, S, Louisville

Both the Dolphins and Cards rejected my offers to move up, now I'm talking to the Packers, but they seem to have multiple offers

Thanks for the update, Dj...keep us posted. This looks like a very intelligent mock, a lot of thought put into it by all participants...

I would have thought Martin would go in this spot...

I traded up for Zach Martin from 26 to 22. GB traded down twice from 21. First swapped with Philly, who took NT Nix at 21.

I paid a 3rd (#83), but got back GB's 4th (#121), also swapped my 7th for GB's 6th jumping up from 218 to 197. According to the chart I lost out by a bunch, but I actually traded up twice only for going back from 83 to 121.

Maybe I could have gotten him without this uptrade, but I'm sure he was up there on team's BPA lists. Thought for sure he'd be gone at 19 or 20 with Miami and Arizona.

He might fall too on draft day because he's a OT/OG tweener, but he aced the whole draft process. From standout career to intangibles to standout postseason (SR Bowl) to system fit. I mean, what's not to like with him? Whatever OL position you need filled, he can probably play it, even C down the road. He's a player you win with in my opinion

I'll keep an eye on Beckham and Fuller now and might move up again for one of them from 35. If not, a trade down is a real possibility.

Martin...nice pick. Are you planning on taking a later round QB or do you expect us to add a vet?...

Thanks for the comments and suggestions bb

I like some other QBs like Murray, Morris and Shaw. It'll come down to a numbers game, depending on how many picks I can make and who's available.

Problem is, thanks to Farmer's sleepwalking FA, we're going to look to fill holes well into the mid rounds instead of going pure BPA with those picks. Still could need a ILB, CB, WR, FS and RB, probably in that order of need urgency

Carr at #5 overall is ajoke IMO.

I think you're going to be laughing pretty hard when the draft rolls around.

And I think whoever drafts will be crying in two to three years.

I hope Farmer thinks like you, Django.

Because Bortles and Martin would be an extremely good first round, IMO. Martin is a plug and play at guard, and Bortles is my favorite QB prospect.

I'd look at WR in the 2nd, although so far not a huge run on WR'ers, could maybe wait till the 3rd. Looking corner next pick? Would love for you to take a flier on my boy Phillip Gaines in a later round.

Guys I would target at 36 are Skov, Fuller, Barr, And Christian Jones. JMHO.

you had a good run Hank.
