For cheap? We got a future first!
I'm tired of the future. Doesn't help this year.
That's quite such a short-sighted and 'instant gratification' attitude to have.
2007 was the last time we had an exciting season. I'd hardley call waiting 7 years for this team to play playoff caliber football an "instant gratification" attitude.
We got a very good player in the trade down with Buffalo. I wouldn't say he was my #1 CB, but the Browns front office wanted him and liked what they saw. Buffalo didn't have a second 1st rounder to give us.
Let me ask you this though, do you think that Gilbert & Manziel could be good players in the NFL? If you think so, then I would ask what the complaint is, especially since we'll have an opportunity with two first rounders next year to draft another two good players even if we make the playoffs.
I've already addressed this, please go back and read through the thread.

Poor Justin Gilbert might end up being the least talked about top 10 NFL drafted player in a long time... The media is going to be all Johnny Football all the time.. oh and that other guy they drafted.

Well, their sched is the 14th most difficult with their opponents 2013 w/l percentage at .500.
Imo, anyway you look at it, we win!

Our defense is about to be so sick... omg.. so wanted this dude after Watkins was gone..
FINALLY got a CB TANDEM that will DOMINATE!!
You bet man. Dance away.
This opens Pettine and O'Neil up to do whatever they want, whenever they want.
This D is top notch once we land a solid ILB and get Robertson to depth. (Borland)

I haven't been this excited for a defense since we brought in Rob Ryan.

If he studs out opposite Haden, he'll get his share of attention.
But I do get your meaning. It's gonna be crazy around here for awhile.

Well, they traded up to get Sammy Watkins so it could very well happen. It's likely a Top 10 selection, and in any case, no worse than a Top 16 (top half) of the draft. I hope they go winless.

Okay, I was so caught up in the #4 pick hype I never even explored the possibility of a trade down or taking a CB with our first pick. So after the draft I looked for info on Gilbert... Let me say that I can't wait to see him opposite Haden!
This pick just set us up to be a QB pressure crazy Defense! Teams will be forced to try and run on us, because they will not have the time to pass! lol
Okay, maybe I'm getting carried away a little, but hot damn our D is looking good on paper!
Welcome to Cleveland Justin Gilbert!

The Bills had an excellent defense last year. And a young QB that wasn't terrible in EJ. How does taking the best WR in the draft make them worse?

Gilbert could really help this D. I'm not as down on Skrine as some, but he's much better suited to be the #3/slot guy. Gilbert is decent size and blazing fast. He could easily supplant Haden as our #1 in a year or two. And if Haden decides to turn down a contract and hit FA then the Gilbert pick will look even better. Good pick by the Browns.

Watkins makes BUF better, no doubt. Although, Schefter rumored that this could be a signal they are trying to move Stevie Johnson. So, it could be a wash or even a step back in 2015 if he is right.
Their QB isn't proven and they lost Byrd and Pettine. So, I could see them struggle. Hope so!

More serious response to this... EJ Manuel wasn't terrible but he wasn't all that good either.. and his back-ups, as of now, are Thad Lewis and Jeff Tuel.... Plus they lost some serious fire power on defense including their coordinator and several position coaches... The Bills next year could easily be the Browns of last year.. fairly talented team with multiple pro-bowl players that still only win a handful of games because of questionable QB play or QB injury...

EJ Manuel wasn't terrible but he wasn't good either. And it's actually debatable whether Watkins was the best WR in the draft. Sure, Watkins will be a good improvement to the Bills running game while he catches screen passes in the flat.

Now, Iknow I'm going to take heat on this one, but some lines of thinking defy all logic to me.
Why do we draft CBs on the 1st round and draft WR's on the 2nd?
Level of skill on a WR is much higher then on a CB, so why do we draft CB's first...
Its like the logic of drafting a LT with a high pick and not drafting a QB, or drafting WOLB in lower rounds.... Defies all logic to me...
Some positions have lower bust risk because they require lower level of skills, so why draft them first...

I'd say that in today's day and age, where all the rules are starting to favor the passing game and CBs have to be a lot better than they used t be, simply for the fact that they can't be quite as physical, CB is of much more importance than WR.

Because in this draft there was a lot more depth at WR and a better one could be had later.. ie. the 5th or 6th best WR was significantly better than the 5th or 6th best CB..

Because the rules favor receivers to such a degree that an average WR can be more than average in today's NFL. Further, 4 and 5 wide sets make even moderately talented WRs valuable. A team can scheme to use specific receivers in specific roles, as opposed to having to have one guy do it all. It is much harder to scheme around a so-so CB.

Look at the free agent market. CBs are way more expensive and way harder to retain. You have to draft them or pay big time.
Veteran WRs are always there. Affordable in free agency and easy to get in trades. Guys like Marshall and Bolden go for mid-round picks. Why draft one in the first, when you have proven beasts out there going for 3rd round picks? Heck, Stevie Johnson was just traded for a 4th.
QB, CB, Trenches = draft early and often. WR, RB = free agency and draft later. That is the best plan, and that is what we are doing!

So I'm standing by Billy Winn's autograph table with my group at the draft party. No4 comes up and my group chimes in their guess. I said it was a trade. Either Atl for Mack or Buffalo for Sammy. The big trade sign flashes and Buffalo is at no4. Everyone is freaking out to find out what we got. I guessed a future 2nd and maybe a late pick this year. The cop I told earlier that we'd trade down for Gilbert came and said I was a lucky .. I'd been wanting to trade down this whole time. Never did I imagine we could get a future 1st from a team as perennially down as we are for a WR I didn't even want so that we could take the CB I have been high on all along. Gilbert has been my #3 behind Robinson and Mack for quite some time. He is the perfect fit for this defense but I hated to take him at 4 with no danger of him being taken until Detroit. OVERJOYED with this pick

After having time to analyze and reflect, I am okay w/this pick. As everyone knows, I really wanted Teddy........but, it was not to be.
I am so happy we did not use the 4th pick on Watkins. I like how we moved back and got a first round pick next year. I think we took advantage of Buffalo.
Gilbert is a great athlete and has amazing hips. He is very fluid. I do worry about him getting too many penalties and gambling a bit, but he looks to be the best pure cover corner in the draft.
Good move!

Me too. But thinking Joe should be able to help him out there. Remember how grabby he was in the beginning and all the penalties he pulled? He's still grabby but gets away with it.
Same with Skrine. He's learned how to be grabby and get away with it compared to his first couple of years. Last year I figured Joe was helping him as well.
What I love about this pick is that it takes a huge weakness and really addresses it well.

I didn't like it at first, but now I am warming up to it... so now Haden and himself and Buster at nickle. Hitner and Gipson roaming behind them. It sounds like a lethal secondary for a lethal front There is no reason that our wrecking balls in Jabaal, Mingo, Kruger and other elements of our defensive front won't be putting the QB on the ground.

Agree - the Browns improved 2 positions in their secondary with this pick. Skrine will be very solid at nickel, IMO. Gilbert will also give us a return threat in Special Teams, and from what I hear from media types, we might even see him in some offensive formations, a la Patrick Peterson, Charles Woodson, or Deion Sanders.

It allows us to play press like Pettine wants. No way you can play press with a 5-9 Skrine on the outside on an island. HUGE get and a great pick.

I was clearing some space on my DVR last night and watched the Cotton Bowl. Man, I hope that was Gilbert's worst game. I have a feeling we''re going to regret taking Gilbert over Fuller. Fuller covers better and Gilbert isn't even on the same planet when it comes to tackling. He can't see through the blocks to get to the runner and get in position to make a tackle. He's big and ha moves very well, though... So there's that.

Same thought here Steve (and Attack said in the chat he liked Fuller better too, and he's good with CBs usually)...I'm souring on the draft the more I watch the guys we picked and normally, it's the other way around.
As of now, I like Bitonio best on tape and he has all the makings of a "Mack-pick" for me. Good player, but wrong decision.
You know I could not even pull the trigger on Kirksey in the 4th/5th in my mock, he left so much to be desired, he's an athlete first and is somewhat a project. SAme with Desir, but he isn't even an athlete, yikes. He's just tall and covered some no name WRs who are probably even slower, that's about it.
Yeah, West was another hype pick too, but he should be a fine role player at least, but like you, I don't see the value, even without the uptrade. As of now, I don't have a good feeling about this draft. Farmer picked too many "hype" prospects and buyed high on most of them. Pretty much all these guys moved up rankings in the POSTseason. What's that tell you about the worth of tape watching and evaluating with this FO? I'm really skeptical with this draft. It's as boom or bust as ever imho and we have to come away with at least 3 booms considering what we went into it. I'd settle with 2 if someone offered me that...
