Thats fair enough and how it should be. I have no doubt that JFB will beat out Hoyer in camp because he has more talent plain and simple.
those saying we should "sit him" and ":baby him" are being unreasonable....this kid is going to make big bucks, he was picked in the Top 25, players picked in the Top 25 are meant to be guys that come in and contribute day one and start....if that player can't do that, then it was a reach and he shouldn't have been taken....
Wait, who is saying we should baby him?
I don't care if a QB is the first one drafted or the last one drafted. You DON'T throw him out there unless he wins the job. PERIOD.
Pettine isn't high on putting rookie QB's in.. He's quoted saying something to that effect. But even he isn't going to hold a guy back if he's the best he's got. He'll play him and that's exactly as it should be. You play the best guys you got.

Got an ESPN alert that said the Browns have sold 1,500 season tickets after that first round draft.

J/C ..... I have no problem with starting Manziel on the bench to start the year.
The Ravens planned on starting Troy Smith to start the 2008 season. He then was sidelined with an illness, and Flacco was thrown into the starting lineup.
The Steelers actually did start Tommy Maddox in Roethlisberger's rookie season. Maddox started 3 games, then got hurt, and Roetlisberger took over from there. He had a strong enough team around him to make a strong playoff run.
I want to try to sit Manziel to start the season. If circumstances force him onto the field, then so be it ..... but I hope that we take our time with him, and let him develop his knowledge of defenses through film study, footwork, and so on.

I agree. I hope that Hoyer starts, and we let Manziel develop. He needs to understand protections at the NFL level, or he;ll get killed up here.
Well, if we are in such good shape talent wise that we don't need any more players to take the field, then yes, let him sit for years. But we better make a deep playoff run this year. Because Johnny sitting on the bench for years isn't helping us win any games. He's not scoring points and he's not keeping the other guys from scoring on us. I guess you guys won't mind ALL of our draft picks sitting this year too, right? We don't need any help on the field. We need bench warmers.
You do know that the first bad play Hoyer makes 70,000 people will be chanting Johnny, Johnny right? We've been down this road before. DA/Quinn. If Hoyer plays well this year then Johnny sits again NEXT season , right? Or do we trade JFF? Welcome to another QB controversy. Those are ALWAYS so much fun. Can't wait for Hoyer to go down and the fans cheer.... BET it will happen.
Our only choice IMO is to move Hoyer for what ever we can get and let Johnny start game one. Ride out the growing pains and hope he isn't as brittle as he looks. But take heart... we won't. We'll go through the same QB BS we did just a few years ago. And it will get JUST as ugly. Happy days....
I'm not so sure about that chanting thing, Hoyer electrified the Fans last season... That gets him a few bad plays this year.
Oh, if Hoyer can't do what he did last year believe-you-me everyone will be yelling for Johnny Football. Bet on it.

I don't get the points about Quinn. I'm a firm believer that rookie QBs should sit and learn to a certain degree - because of the high prices of QB contracts from the draft that become an obsolete choice for many. Some just did not have a Starter (Bridge QB they are calling them today) But I thanked the list provided as the few who did wait progressed nicely and did well.
I added BQ just to be fair as he did sit 1.5 years (take your word for that fact ) and defy my theory of sitting a QB for however long it takes as it works. Only reason I mentioned BQ cause he was an example of one sitting but not learning/progressing...despite what ESPN states.
Btw BQ was on ESPN radio and he still is a diehard Browns fan

Responding to the media clamoring for Johnny to start right away.
Is there anyway that all the dawgs in the world can possibly reject their hypnotic hold on our views, opinions, and beliefs? The day when dawgs don't give a rats (booty) about what the media rams into our brains will be the day when we take a huge step forward into becoming a playoff caliber football town.
I choose to reject their bs. Its like listening to a bunch of middle school girls talking about the fat cheerleader.
Who cares what the girls say? This is football.

I think the scenario that some of us has played out is: Johnny gets on the field for some reason and that's it. When? Where? Doesn't matter. When it happens, the guy is the rare type that will take that moment and Sportscenter's ratings will go through the roof that night with what ends up happening.
Once again, somebody ask Nick Saban what he thinks about our pick.

The way I see it is we now have two GOOD and EXCITING QB's on the roster with a Quality Vet presence and 3rd/4th QB depth. Johnny Football is here for the FUTURE, Hoyer will start until it's determined Johnny is ready and BETTER. I think Hoyer is our best chance at winning this year, when Manziel is up to speed and all coached up, he will have to beat out Hoyer. I'm very Happy with the QB position! Welcome to Cleveland Johnny Manziel!

Ok, I sent Uncle Nick a text and this is the e-mail he sent back..
On Johnny Manziel...
"I don't think there's any question that Johnny Manziel is a unique player at the quarterback position. Now, I think sometimes as coaches we look for a certain type of guy to play that position, but we're talking about a guy with unique instincts in terms of extending plays, making plays not just with his feet, he really isn't a runner. He scrambles to throw and he can throw more accurately than people give him credit. And he can throw the ball downfield. This guy to me, his instincts, he has, like, eyes in the back of his head. Very difficult to get on the ground. His ability to extend plays, breaks the defense down more than anything than anyone can do."

I'm wasn't a huge Manziel fan, but he does have a big arm and scramble ability. Most importantly, we have a cast to surround him:
Above average OLine, with the best blindside protector. Gordon, Burleson, Hawkins, Cameron. Tate. A defense that looks pretty tough on paper.

BQ just wasn't very good.........neither is Leaf......nor Ponder (he sit).......Locker (he sit)......or Weeden who started week one. The thing these guys had in common was they were never ready because they were never good. If JFF beats out Brian in a fair QB competition then great start him. If not let him sit. I honestly don't believe there is a predefined method on whether a QB should sit or not, but rather it is a strategy based on the individual player.
In JFF's case I believe he should probably sit and learn for awhile. However, if he is clearly the best QB coming out of camp then start him.........I just don't envision that being the case.

Yes, and if he does great then it's his job. And we have a first round bench warmer for the next 4 years. He's going to really help us over there gathering splinters. And the always fun "Johnny" chants when Hoyer has a bad play will be interesting. We ALREADY have a QB controversy brewing. We've got the Hoyer camp and the Johnny camp lining up now. You think that will end when the season starts? This one is going to make the DA/Quinn thing look mild.

BAD idea. Perhaps I cannot emphasize the word BAD strongly enough.
Sadly, Manziel is likely to start at some point in 2014, but to march him straight out there considering the game he played in college is a sure-fire way to, at best, set his development back a couple of years, and at worst, ruin him permanently.
BAD idea.
Totally agree. If he has any hope at all we'll let him ripen on the vine as loooooong as possible. More than anything else at this point I want Hoyer to thrive. For both players and our sake. I hope the rest of the draft is dedicated to supporting Hoyer's success. OL, WR, RB. Bring 'em!
You start whichever QB wins the job. If that QB is Brian Hoyer, Johnny Manziel or even Alex Tanney, you go with the one that's earned it. Period.

The Homeless Guy
I heard what Palontonio said last night.
He has been misquoted on this board as in the media.
All Jimmy said was "that made him realize what the fans want." That the fans want Johnny.
Of course if I was a west virginia steelroid girlie man who has a blog site I would make it sound like Jimmy stormed into the room and yelled "The Homeless Man wants Johnny Football, draft him now Farmer!"
Not what happened. Not what was said.

Exciting? Yes.
In the NFL, this is a Troy Polamalu pick 6 or a strip sack.
Sorry, you lose...Johnny has HUGE hands and doesn't fumble. The pass was questionable, but Johnny is the "it" this franchise has needed since Bernie. That's my Alabama team he was shredding for almost 500 total yards PERSONALLY in ONE game.........Nick Saban had a year to try and stop Johnny and WOOPS, he didn't.
"It" is an overused cheesy sports cliche used as a crutch by people who don't have an answer. Look up his performance versus LSU and get back to me.
Blah Blah Blah....AND get back to me is NOT cheesy? LOL!!!!! I am sure your Teddy Bridgewater would have handed LSU their jocks right???????
He sure did to Florida.

Who shot your dog?
Come on man by camp do you mean on this board...mostly I see, best ready to play QB starts. Pretty consistently here.
As for media. I don't know I watched NFL Network and the Faulk and other guys mostly were saying how great this is for JM so he can sit and learn under Hoyer as the Browns believe in Hoyer right now.
When JM is ready to step up and play NFL football with a full Playbook not a dummied down version. Then it would probably be his time to START HIS ERA!
Now if Hoyer goes down for some reason and its Young or JM...Give JM the start cause I got a feeling both will probably have to use a dummied down playbook!

Bridgewater played will against Florida but his defense played excellent.. they scored 33 points and the defense ran an INT back for a TD and gave him another one inside the 20... and held Florida to 20 points... 20/32 for 266, 2 TDs, 1 INT, and 5 sacks is not a dominating game.. he played well and they won but it was not an amazing performance..
Manziel played a bad game against LSU.. it was a bad game, what else can you say?

Good QBs have bad games. Even the great Peyton Manning had some issues recently in a very important game as I recall. I've seen Brady have bad games... how about the Amoeba defense CLE used against Brady a few years back? It happens and JFF is not immune to that nor should he be expected to be.
