Arbitrator rules Jimmy Graham’s a tight end

Jimmy Graham is officially a tight end.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, arbitrator Stephen Burbank’s ruling is out, and Graham has been deemed to be a tight end for the purpose of his franchise tag.

The difference of $5.3 million in tags ($7 million for tight ends, $12.3 million for wide receivers) creates the urgency for an immediate appeal.

The Saints still have until July 15 to reach a long-term deal with Graham, and this ruling gives them a bit of leverage, or at least the high ground. They can come in with something greater than every other tight end in the league as an olive branch, and still be saving money.

maybe this will help get ext done with Jordan Cameron?

Gordon getting suspended will not help the Browns in contract negotiations for sure.

Why?

I agree, he'll be getting a lot more looks from the defensive secondary.

It won't help all that much. His size and speed will just be too much for any linebacker and a safety can be played by JM's playmaking ability or a deep route from the WR.

It makes him the focal point of our passing game rather than a complementary role player.

I think JC catches near 100 balls this year and takes the Browns single season record.

With Jimmy Grahm being ruled a "tight end" - he isn't going to get WR money. From what I read, I hear he's more explosive off the line and etc. I mean I guess there wasn't any contact, but I'm looking forward to JC playing consistently good.

If Gordon is out for an extended period of time, either JC or Hawkins is going to lead this team in likely yards and receptions...

Cameron notices Graham ruling

You can bet Jordan Cameron was paying attention to the Jimmy Graham ruling.

The Saints Pro Bowl tight end was determined to be a tight end and not a wide receiver for franchise-tag purposes by arbitrator Stephen Burbank.

Graham had the franchise tag placed on him this year and he argued that he was a wide receiver, rather than a tight end. The cost to franchise a player that is a wide receiver this year was $12.3 million, whereas the franchise tag for a tight end was $7 million -- a difference of $5.3 million between the two positions.

Prior to today's ruling, Cameron's twitter bio said "Pro Bowl TE for the Browns." After the ruling, Cameron's bio says "Pro Bowl pass catcher for the Browns."

Burbank referred to Graham's social media accounts where he referred to himself as a tight end.

He's going to be ruled a TE so it has no bearing on contracts.. But I do see your point.

and this ruling only makes it an issue if the Browns try to tag him... In contract negotiations the Browns can pay him whatever they want, they can pay him like Peyton Manning if they want... so, assuming he has a good year, get him into a nice deal comparable to his performance and lets move on.

Not really, all of the teams can only go so far above a positions current top payout. They enforce that as a way to keep the cost of business reasonable.
