Well you have to be careful, about who "they" are.

Probably the exact same people who have promoted trying to enforce prohibition on weed that's cost the tax payers tens of billions of dollars over decades and has had zero effect to date.

it just saved millions of people!!! what price can you put on that?

It has saved nobody. Weed is everywhere and anyone who wants it can get it. The only thing being accomplished is it's not being taxed and often the money spent on it goes to drug cartels and criminals instead of being taxed to help our country.

It appears you have no clue just how much of a failure the war on drugs actually is.

Alcohol is more of a gateway drug and more harmful effects on your body than pot. Are you this vocal against the use of Alcohol? If not then you are just a hypocrite or you are just trolling the board.

My guess is trolling. I've tried to not fall into his trap but its hard to keep quiet in the face of insanity.
My comment about wishing Gordon was a coke addict was written in purple text (sarcasm) and was a tongue in cheek commentary on how pot stays in one's system for weeks where coke is gone in 48 to 72 hours. So an NFL player could be a raging coke head and not get caught but if he tokes a doobie on the first of the month he can still lose his career on the 25th. That to me is insanity.

Are you going to add Alcohol to your 2016 referendum? My Crystal Ball says you won't get enough signatures to make it on the ballot. And the Pick 3 lotto numbers will be 123.

I have a daughter who is a CPA and a son who is a very accomplished musician. Both quite successful. Neither of which use any type of drugs.

But I was a heavy pot smoker during the period that both were conceived. I'm sure they as well as my grandchildren would disagree with your antiquated and cruel, illogical thinking.

Seriously, can we just get some news about Gordon so this thread can get back on track!!!

No, you really don't. I'd like to log in and find news as to rather he has been suspended or not... could care less about the attitudes with other board members. Save the bible thumping for the everything else section.

Hey maybe Purp will put up a red neck right wing bible thumper's club section on the board so all the dolts that are feeling so self righteous and judgmental have a place to be less irritating to those with realistic world views and perceptions! We could call it something like God's (We are the only people that matter) VIP room and they could go there and feel special (just like special olympians).

But seriously... how bout we keep Pure Football to pure football, and the Josh Gordon thread to actual news about Josh Gordon... just sayin'!

While this thread has gone to the waste side, I will agree. I will disagree with putting down other Browns fans, wether they be democrat or republican. Ohio is such a diverse state, you will have direct conflict with political ideology, and I can see how that plays a part in any given thread. I'd like to see a dedicated political forum. Just so we can focus on the subject at hand, without a political agenda.

I haven't had the chance, but thanks purp for taking your free time, for this forum.

2% chance the NFL does an about face when it comes to marijuana. Roger goodell looks at the ray rice case, compared to jg. To the unbiased observer, their actions merit different sanctions, and the nfl uses the jg case as an example. It's not gonna happen, but I bet if you present the case to a 5 year old, they would agree.

Compare josh Gordon's off field actions to Ray rice. The logical conclusion is one merits a a harsher penalty than the other, if only 5 year olds ran the nfl.

I agree to an extent.

On the other hand, I do think people keep forgetting the difference between breaking the rules one time vs multiple times. Nothing happened to Gordon the first time he broke the rules.

The guy is a habitual offender. He hasn't learned his lesson. Partying is more important than football, his teammates, and possibly his future. Of course, as long as people keep rationalizing about his innocence and making excuses for him, he will probably never learn the importance of responsibility.

Truthfully, even though I am a Brown's fan, I hope he gets the axe. It irritates me how he keeps messing up despite receiving chance after chance after chance after chance after chance. He could care less about anything and anyone other than his own immediate self-gratification and he knows that his fans will make excuses for him as long as he puts up numbers.

I am not asking anyone to agree w/my line of thinking, but it irks me that a guy can be that selfish and possesses such a high degree of entitlement. It goes against everything I have ever believed in. It goes against how I was raised. It goes against how I raised my children.

I do not believe in entitlement. I believe in hard work. I believe in being responsible. I believe in giving more than you take. Therefore, while many of you might continue to lay the blame on others, I put the blame on Gordon and I hope he faces the consequences, because he has demonstrated that he has not learned anything from his prior mistakes other than that as long as he can catch the football, people will continue to look the other way and he can keep on doing what he wants to do.

In terms of statistical numbers he's the best we've had since our return. Now, once again the Browns are "snake-bit" in losing a promising player. Fans don't want to believe it's happening again so many are in the denial stage of their grieving.

"It can't be true. It just simply cannot be true. There must be some way around this. Maybe the NFL will do a 180° and allow pot smoking starting now. After all two states allow recreational use and the whole Nation including many in the medical profession are backing off their strong stance against it. It would only be right if they not suspend Gordon at all, a Hallmark Case if you will."

The next stage is anger. Angry at the NFL, angry at Gordon, angry at the team for not supporting him well enough, angry at Heckert for drafting him? It can go any direction.

For now it's denial.

I get that. I really do.

I also get that most people probably don't care what he does as long as he helps the team win. I am not asking them to change their minds.

I was just voicing my own personal opinion. I feel strongly about it and no one is going to make me feel sorry for Gordon and blame the NFL or anyone else. But again, I am NOT asking anyone to agree w/me on this. Just expressing my opinion, bro.

Isnt that a shame ?

No it's not. People are people no matter their profession. No matter what, if we as people expect people of certain professions to be "heroes, or role models", it's we who are being unrealistic.

Are there some players in certain sports who live up to those expectations? Yes I'd say there are. Just like you have noble and honorable people that exist in every walk of life.

But for those who expect more of someone simply because they play professional sports, you are setting yourself up for disappointment, not the players committing some horrible crime against you.

They have their jobs because of a special athletic ability that none of us can duplicate, not because they're patron saints.

I expect them to act like professionals. I expect them to honor their contracts. In those contracts they agree to act in a way that is morally responsible, such as, not breaking the law and following the NFL's substance and drug policy. The NFL recognizes the role their employees have as role models for young children, young adults, and many others. That's why players get fined or suspended for violating those policies. That's not my personal agenda. Almost every working environment where professionals work have the same expectations. No one is picking on the poor millionaire athletes.

I expect that if they can't obey the law, follow the rules of the NFL, and follow their contracts then they should get fired like all of the rest of us because their job is NOT just to play a game on Sundays.

Morality and behavior of the players through contracts is not the case at all. Contracts are about money. Players are assets hired by team owners. The League is merely a referee protecting the assets of the team owners. It's all about the bucks. A drunk, killer, pothead, juiced, wife-beater...etc...player is not a good asset to the owner and hence the team.

Goodell and the NFL can hide behind the moral and/or legal issues all they want but when the fit hits the shan the only thing that really matters is the Almighty Dollar.

In reading through these posts, I can't remember who wrote it, but I thoroughly agree that it's the parent's job to direct their children towards positive roll models and away from the bums. Trying to impose our own set of moral standards and codes on any other human being is ego gone wild. Sounds like the Westboro Baptist Church ranting against pot smokers, "Castrate them! Castrate them!"

It scares me to think of what you must think about an openly gay player then.

I completely agree! Not to go too far off-topic, but my severely autistic daughter passed away at age 13 in 1998 from seizures. She had grand mal seizures that were only partially controlled by medications. Marijuana has been found to be effective in stopping seizures, so it could possibly have saved her life.

Pit I can see where your coming from. From a short term financial view its not the best. The thing is its not being done to save money in the welfare system short term. It's being done to make it harder for drug addicts to use state money for drugs instead of on their kids. We all know it happens and it happens quite a lot.

When you look long term though and when you see people get it in their heads that if they want to keep getting aide then they are going to have to get help and clean themselves up there are many benefits that far outweigh what the testing costs.

BTW I am not for denying them benefits if they are tested positive and asking for help dealing with their addiction. There are kind of bad situations people fall into and in a moment of weakness or ignorance make a choice that gets them trapped. A lot of times they have to hit rock bottom before they get the nerve to start looking for a way out. They don't need to be judged. They need to be helped when they ask for it. Now if they are using and refuse help then they should be denied benefits till they are ready to get that help.

Give a program like this 20 years and it will effect a culture change that will greatly benefit our society. That's well worth the money IMHO.

You can't fix stupid but you can destroy ignorance. When you destroy ignorance you remove the justifications for evil. If you want to destroy evil then educate our people. Hate is a tool of the stupid to deal with what they can't understand.

I'm not so sure Gordon has a high degree of entitlement. Most 20 something Pot users I have known, do not tend to think beyond their next party, getting drugs, getting high and getting laid: meaning they don't tend to think of the BIG PICTURE at all. To feel entitled, there needs to be a big picture perception of themselves as special.

I guess the part that amazes me in all of this are talking points I keep hearing that just don't add up to me. People keep talking about smaller, less invasive government. Less federal programs. Lower spending.

Yet when it becomes about a moral issue, even when it causes increased government spending, they suddenly support bigger government and an increase in spending.

I believe seeing the swing in some of the GOP for legalization of weed is because they see the failure of the ability to stop it and because they understand the low risk of its use and the savings that can be had in our court systems combined with the savings in our prison systems and the tax income potential.

I applaud their rational understanding and standing behind what they claim they are after. Smaller government and less regulation.

I believe what you advocate would help among hard core addicts of drugs. But any casual user can get any harder drugs out of their system in 48 to 72 hours. You would be spending an extreme amount of money to target a very small percentage of those who collect public assistance.

And just for the record, while I did smoke weed for decades, I haven't smoked in many years. It did not lead to hard drug use or any addiction. I simply got older and no longer desired to smoke it. So I stopped. There were no side effects, withdraws or anything associated with addiction.

In the program you describe, you could easily catch someone who smoked a joint with his brother or neighbor a week or two ago that is not an addict and didn't spend a dime on drugs. His children and family would suffer greatly for that. Which according to you, is not they type of person you intend to target at all.

When someone goes against their principals for smaller government and less spending on a morality campaign that hurts many unintended people, I simply shake my head. Smoking weed is a minor misdemeanor in most all states. I would strongly oppose a family losing its benefits over such a minor infraction of the law.

Harder drugs is another issue. And on that we agree. Heroin, cocaine and even prescription drugs has caused the life, health and economic collapse of many families and has had an extreme negative impact on many families. However, the same could be said for alcohol and tobacco.

Where the line is drawn is different for the individual. But anyone who tests low for THC is nothing more than a casual user of weed. You would receive no jail time in most states for that. Actually it isn't considered any more criminal than public intoxication. Is something that minor worth taking away benefits from children of those people?

My issue is that for those of us who pay taxes and get drug tested, how is this fair? How is it fair for someone out of work to get high and I can't? Why should someone who gets benefit money paid for by people like me be allowed to smoke when I can't because I'm working?

I'm all for small government, but I do believe we have created an entitlement culture. Government benefits should be seen as a privilege, and that's not always the case. A close friend of mine used to work for section 8, evaluating people's income and essentially deciding their rent. He used to tell me these stories all the time, folks who came in trying to cheat the system, or showing up unprepared and then being rude to him. It's one of the reasons he switched jobs. He hated many of his "clients," although I will say he also said there were some who came in completely prepared and were very polite.

And while I generally believe in small government (although I'm a pragmatic type of guy), this is something that really pisses me off. I don't care the cost, take it out of other things. It's the principle, if you receive government benefits (other than being a retired person on social security), you should be on a random drug testing program. The same way I, someone who works and helps pay for these benefits, am.

I can't smoke, but you can while supporting yourself on my dime? Oh the irony. And I'm sure I sound bitter, because I am.

I don't agree with the fact you can't smoke on your own time and be subjected to being fired for it. I disagree with that too.

I actually worked for a company who drug tested the entire company one day and for everyone who failed, they used it as leverage to cut their pay. No firing or time off. It was simply a tool to cut wage costs.

Why does a company not care if you go to a bar and get drunk every night, but somehow seem so needy to worry about if you go home and smoke a joint?

Maybe that's the bigger question here. And I guess if you feel wronged about not being able to smoke, making so many others feel wronged along with you makes sense?

The weed laws in this country are just plain crazy. Inflicting that on others makes no sense. But these times are changing. Slowly, but changing none the less.

Mans legislation of morality and his attempts to somehow equate his rules as being Gods without direct correlation to His written word is one more example of man creating God in man's own image.

All things in moderation, not because of what man thinks is good or bad for you, but rather if used or desired excessively that one secular thing runs the risk of being that one thing that controls your life; and you have in essence exchanged one God for another.

Not to split hairs, but you are not "forced" to take drug tests. You do have the choice of not working for that company. When my company went "drug free", we had to sign an agreement to submit to random testing. It was "understood" that non-compliance would lead to dismissal. Is it coercion? Yes, but you did have a choice. In effect, we signed away our rights by agreeing voluntarily to waive them. I've been tested twice, and both times it made me furious. Blame the system that swats flies while marauding killer elephants roam free.

To Pit's point about testing only netting weed smokers; its true that only cannabis stays in urine for 30 days, while harder drugs are flushed in a few days. But meth, heroin, cocaine, and other hard drugs will appear in hair tests for up to 90 days. ( http://www.drugs.ie/drugs_info/about_drugs/how_long_do_drugs_stay_in_your_system ) I wouldn't care if the Feds would forego testing for weed at all, but they should have mandatory hair testing for "hard" drugs for any recipients of govt assistance, IMO.
