It's doubtful, but she could have saved for YEARS to get the television and gaming systems. I guess I look at those items differently than most. To me, they are actually SAVING me money in the long run because I spend more time at home using them.

As long as she was receiving no help from the government, I don't care how she got the TV and gaming console; if any form of gov't housing, food stamps, etc are part of her monthly income then I've got a problem with it.

When my tax dollars have anything to do with anyone getting luxery items, it is rather upsetting. I wish I could do something about it, but other than not paying taxes there isn't much that can be done; and that likely wouldn't be advisible

I don't mind sharing... and its pretty sad cause I haven't done this yet but...

My wife and I just graduated from college and we're struggling right now... mainly due to our one year old. But he's worth every penny. This is our approx (like I said doing this because I've never done it honestly... and thats just sad):

monthly take in after tax:
ME = 3000
HER = 1200
---------------------------------
TOTAL TAKE IN = 4200

expenses:
HOUSE + TAX + INSURANCE= 700
CARS = 400
GAS = 80
BABY SUPPLIES = 100
GROCERIES = 200
MEDICAL = 200
CREDIT CARDS = 150
PETS = 40
UTILITIES = 200
CABLE = 50
NEWSPAPER = 10
PHONE = 40
CELL = 40
FITNESS CLUB = 50
SCHOOL LOANS = 220
DAY CARE = 600
CAR INSURANCE = 120
SAVINGS = 400
MISC = 200
---------------------------------------
TOTAL EXPENSES = 3800

So this excercise shows me that were not doing something right... as we should have 400 blow money each month... to much going out to eat or something. But in reality its a little of both too much spending and just the plain ole something came up... car needs inspected... medical bills (just found out I have type 1 diabetes), etc. Like everyone the credit card debt is what pisses me off.... stupid college days of racking up god knows what. Oh well I hope this gives you a better picture of how we make it... I know it helps me.

posted it again as I'm on the tail end of the page and I thought this might keep the discussion rolling.

They have Cadillac SUVs, Expeditions, Lexus, Even saw a BMW parked in the drive of a house that probably wasn't worth as much as the car.

that's a bit out of context... those people don't make 150K legit,,, and they don't pay taxes,,, those are not the kind of people I think Ammo is thinking of..

Quote:

And you better throw in 300.00 for gas a month too.
200 for hair appointments
100 for the nail salon
300 for shoes
300 for clothing

Sure, that's legit expenses,,, I wasn't trying to get every nickle and dime accounted for,,,, so yeah,,, for sure,, add those in.

That's another $1,200 per month.. so now, using my example, instead of $4,000 left over, you have $2,800... still a healthy sum of money to invest and/or save each month.. don't you think!

Quote:

Even so, the average new car is going to be 350-400 for a simple model 400-500 for something a little more lavish

I think you need to go look at the newspaper ads this weekend.. Last Sunday in the Plain Dealer (which I am looking at) Spitzer Chevy had Cobalts for as low as 97.00 per month with 2500 down.,. 0 down was 169.00 per month.. This is the kinda car I had in mind when I looked at the lower end vehicle.

At Lakeshore Chevy, they had a 2007 Trailblazer loaded, leather, air, power everything with 0 down anda monthly payment of 324.00 per month,,

Now if you want to get a Lexus or Infiniti or Acura or Caddy or Lincoln,, sure, you are gonna pay more.. I wasn't trying to be a show off,,,just a normal guy,,, nothing fancy..

Actually, if you are putting 400 in savings like you listed then your not doing all that bad.

You have 400 in savings, 200 misc, and 400 left over thats 1000 of unspent income a month, just under 25%. that's really not that bad.

600 for daycare, is that what it costs these days? Damn I feel sorry for young families, that's ridiculous.

324.00 loaded. Damn stuff is cheap up there.

A stripped down Honda Civic here is 259.00 month. But then read the small print and you need 3k cash.

I've seen adds for those little cars for 99.00 /mo and they are always followed with tiny print that says "for the first 12 months, after which a regular payment of 239.00 applies."

I mean come on 97.00? 97.00 x 60 = 5820.00 no way that car only cost 5820.00

Unless your talking leases.

/edit/ changed form 79.00 to 97.00 transposed my numbers, /edit/

Add about another $50,000 to those houses to get what they would sell for around here.

Yeah I dont touch the 401k or savings... the savings we do use at the end of the year for xmas gifts. But not all of it.

Day care is redic... soon as we have another my wife is going to quit her job and stay home till they get older. Its just not worth it. Actually 600 a month is pretty cheap too.... he doesn't go to a day care he goes to a friend of the family who is retired and stays home. All the day cares we looked at wanted 800 a month. This was definetly the route to go as he isn't getting infested with virus's of other kids and its cheaper. Our sitter is great... ole italian woman who came over on a boat at 10 years of age. She keeps him in line and feeds him well.

Wow. The first house - it'd probably run about $475k out here. Maybe I should move back???

Only if you can afford to retire. Houses up here are cheap. That's because there are not many jobs.

Not really, a 30 thousand dollar car with 2 grand down over 5 years is right at 600 a month. Maybe a little less, my payment is actually 560.

Day care is ridiculous. I don't know how some people do it. MY wife has a much better job than me so I now stay home with our two boys. It was actually cheaper to stay home than to go to work just to pay daycare.

My wife and I are in the market for a new home and $150k wont get it done here in Wisconsin. Just to get a house like the ones pictured would be a minimum 250k to 300k

Teach yourself now to live on neccessities. My payment in parenthesis

1. Place to live (Mortgage, $496.24)

2. AFFORDABLE car ($0 - Infiniti, I paid it off 2 years ago, I've had it since 2000)

3. Food (learn to cook, it tastes better and it's cheaper) (approx $150 per month)

4. Utilities (winter is more expensive so this is the number I'll use Gas, Water and Electric $300)

5. Car insurance ($660 for the year -- $55 per month -- I pay it 6 months at a time to avoid the $5 fees))

6. Renters/omeowners insurance ($410 for the year-- $35 month - pay it for the year to avoid fees for monthly payments )

7. Taxes (approx $3700 for the year - property and school tax - I pay it once a year - no escrow account -- $310 month)

8. Phone $80

9. Gas (I'm in sales so I drive a lot) $120

That is all that is a neccessity in todays world.

$1546.24 per month in necessities

Luxuries:

Direct TV - $50 per month (cheapest package)

Going out with friends/eating out ($150 per month)

New clothes - rare for me to buy-- clothes last, don't fall into trends. (average I spend around $500 per year on clothes-- $40 per month)

$240 per month in luxuries.

Total: $1786.24.

The best advice I can give you is to get an Amex Blue Cash card/and or a Discover card and PAY IT OFF EVERY MONTH. I get around $150 knocked off my bill at the end of every year because of this. That's 1 month of groceries for free just for putting everything on my Amex - paying it off every month. They essentially pay me to use their card because I will not make anything less than a full payment.
In 100% commission - checks fluxuate - after taxes I wshould bring in $4900 per month for the next 2. That means I have $3200 to do whtever I want with (I save the majority of it). Tis month I splurged and bought new bath towels, bed sheets and a pair of running shoes (total of all was $300).

People on here will make fun of me for my spending habits and saying $300 was splurging. But it's that mentality that has me way ahead of the game. When I finally find a woman interested in a nice guy - I'm set up real nice to spoil the hell out of her. Other simple things to do. If you have a house and workout - DON'T GO TO A GYM. By the equipment. I have a full weight set and treadmill. Total on both was approximately $2500. The treadmill I got late last year will last 20 years, the weight set has been with me for 6 years already. I've paid $116 per year for the weight set so far (what's a gym membership cost?) The treadmill was $1850. that comes to $92 per year over 20 years. These things pay for themselves.

When I left college I had $100 to my name. That was 10 years ago. I now have a house, car checking account, savings account with a nice build along with mutual fumds anda 401k. My only debt is my house-- which I consider a necessity so it's not a debt.

Before ANY purchase ask yourself. Is this a necessity or a luxury? If it's a necessity - buy it, if it's a luxury ask. Okay, do I need this luxury? No, that's why it's a luxury. Can I AFFORD this luxury WITHOUT any debt involved? If yes, then buy it - if no - continue to save until you can pay for it at one time. This will avoid debt. Live smart.

I agree 100% with this philosophy. I'm prepared for it, I've learned well from my parents and the professor teaches really good common sense tips. I'm gonna keep my notes from that class. (which includes how to buy a car or lease one).

I more or less wonder about the people around me who are spoiled to death or can't stop buying impulse things. Now, I'll admit my parents have treated me VERY well but they always get on my case about how I spend my money...I also inherited my dad's "brick in the stomach" gene whenever I spend a lot of money.

But my friend who bought something from Victoria's Secret because her Victoria's Secret card got a higher limit (as a celebration)? I worry about her.

Just as an example: do you need a cell phone & a landline right away?

For instance, my bro is sacrficing things like a landline, newpaper, etc etc until he gets his student loans paid off. Because of that savings, he is paying to go to see my cousin in Cali and to come to my college graduation in Orlando next week (followed by a trip to Vegas but our parents are paying for everyone to get there + food).

Here's the luxuries I'm looking at down the line...

I don't plan on having a landline, my cell phone is just fine. I don't even have my dorm phone plugged in. No one I know uses them.

I might want the Sunday paper only, I like looking through the Best Buy ads, but we'll see.

Cable/internet is where things get interesting. I have a flat screen that I bought on a whim with Christmas money I got, I'll want HD service for that, and I'll need broadband too.

I like Browns gear and videogames too, but I don't go game crazy. I buy maybe 4-5 a year at this point in my life. I used to get a lot more.

I think I'll be fine, but we'll see.

i've seen newspapers on here a lot as a luxury item...newspapers pay for themselves (especially the sunday paper) with all of the coupons included in the paper. it just takes a little bit of time to go through the coupons and a little flexibility at the grocery store. i am not a fan of using coupons for stuff i normally wouldn't buy, but if you're already buying something, why not save some money!

of so now we are at 7500.00 for a car that I see for sale around here for 15-17k
And honestly, anyone that is forced to buy a car based on it only costing them 97.00/mo, usually doesn't have 2500 for the down payment

i've seen newspapers on here a lot as a luxury item...newspapers pay for themselves (especially the sunday paper) with all of the coupons included in the paper. it just takes a little bit of time to go through the coupons and a little flexibility at the grocery store. i am not a fan of using coupons for stuff i normally wouldn't buy, but if you're already buying something, why not save some money!

Excellent point. I may have to get the Sunday paper. By the way, I just got my Amex bill - anniversary day. $172 knocked off the bill. 1 month of groceries and an oil change for free
