It's funny to read the opinions of those on this thread as opposed to the Gordon thread. No hypocrisy at all.

It is sad that so many of us think beating a woman is worse than smoking weed.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

This is going off on a bit of a tangent, but I just want to say how happy I get when something like this happens. Dumb ESPN talking head says something dumb and gets in trouble. I love it. When I think about it, I'm kind of surprised this doesn't happen more often. With the small amount of real material coming from the near non-existent reporting that they regurgitate constantly, they have to try to spice it up however they can.
There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

Sadly, ESPN loves it too. Bad publicity is still publicity and they will likely see a ratings bump for his first show back after suspension!!!.

They showed the footage inside the elevator the morning after it happened then it was never to be shown again. She was hitting him over and over and he was trying to control her and prevent her from hitting him then he apparently had enough and hit her with a short right and she went out. You shouldnt hit a woman but if she wants to fight like a man eventually she will get hit like one and she did.

Plz. He hit her with a short right. You're acting like he threw a hay maker at her.
I'm on the side that he should've got a long suspension, but on this sub topic, I don't give a damn what profession he is, athlete or not. There only so much a guy is going to take from a woman being physical until he snaps.
That's the only problem I have with is situation. Everybody wants to act like they're holier than thou.

I don't think it's holier than thou to say that I have not nor ever would hit a woman. In particular, a woman that I have an extreme physical advantage over.
Now, if I was being hit hard and repeatedly, then I would control the situation. But, wrestling her to the ground to subdue her is vastly different than knocking her unconscious by punching her in the head.

I agree.
I have had 2 arguments with women in my life where they became physical ..... slapping and punching at me, and so on. I have never punched or hit back. I left. I left for good, actually, in both cases. That's not a relationship I ever want.
I suppose that if a woman came at me, armed, and intent upon killing me, then I might do anything I had to in order to defend my life ..... but short of that I can never see myself hitting a woman for any other reason.

I think this goes without saying, but Roger Goodell is paid quite well and holds a prestigious position. A large part of his responsibility is being unbiased.
Not necessarily true. He's paid to, essentially, represent the owners and the league.

So, in your opinion, hitting a female with a short right is okay, but throwing a haymaker would be wrong?

That was dumb.
I said I agree with the suspension. I think you should only hit a woman as a last resort. He use the last resort by jabbing her. He showed restraint. Instead of hitting her with a haymaker.
Read please.

And, the point that we are putting back at you is that there was absolutely no need for jabbing her (and with the force to knock her out).
He could have easily bear-hugged her, grabbed her arms, etc. and stopped her from flailing at him.
If you are not so certain, let's see a picture of them together. Which one looks like they are more physically imposing? Shall we compare arm size?

I agree. Most men show restraint, but women don't have a Pass Go card and can slap and hit a guy without a limit.

Here's the way I see it, and maybe this is just the right way to vocalize it.
Ray Rice got off way easy with his suspension, he should've gotten much more because you don't hit a woman.
At the same time, I don't feel sorry for her, not one bit.

+1, I've been punched in the face twice by women I wasn't in a relationship with. Those I walked away from, if I had to have, I would have ran. Had I been followed, I would have called the police and had her arrested for assault.
I've been slapped by a now ex-girlfriend once, and I made it very clear, that that was the final time that would ever happen. Don't put me in that situation. And that was the end of that.
Now if I'm on the subway and a random woman starts attacking me, well then I will do everything I can to subdue her. And unless she is built like a bear and I'm really in trouble, I can't imagine ever hitting back. Either way I'm calling the cops.
Ray Rice had options, hit all the elevator buttons, whatever. Cover up and then make your escape. He's an NFL Runningback...... Is that woman a moron? Yes. It still gives him absolutely no excuse for what he did. Be a man and make your escape, then tell her to pack her bags and leave. Does Ray Rice have any defense? No. Absolutely none

Can't really feel sorry for her... there was clearly something given to her (guessing MONEY). IMO, they're both stupid and in the wrong. They deserve each other, match made in heaven. Rice better start saving up another lump sum for the next time he cold cocks her.

Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice and Janay Palmer were married Friday, league sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.
The marriage came one day after Rice was indicted by a grand jury on third-degree aggravated assault for allegedly striking Palmer unconscious.
The ceremony had been planned for a couple of weeks, according to sources.
Rice was arrested and charged with simple assault-domestic violence on Feb. 15 following a physical altercation with his then-fiancée at the Revel Casino and Hotel in Atlantic City, N.J.

Brandon Spikes lashed out at Ray Rice, who once criticized another player via Twitter, Jamison Hensley writes. Story
Palmer also was charged with simple assault. http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/106938...-day-indictment

Enormous difference between beating a woman and smoking a joint. That shouldn't even be remotely debatable.
How did I know that was coming?
The point was that you guys are passionately defending a guy who broke the rules. It's not a debate. He violated several NFL and NCAA policies, but you keep acting like he is a innocent victim.
I am not defending Rice, I am saying it is bizarre how you guys are ignoring that our guy broke the rules................SEVERAL TIMES!!!
This question is for the board, not YTown. I want an honest answer. I watched the video of Rice and his girlfriend coming out of the elevator. I didn't see a punch thrown. Did I miss that, or is there clear video proof that he decked her? Has he been charged w/a crime? Has he been convicted?
If not, how is "allegedly" doing something worse than actually getting caught breaking the rules of your employer and the law?
If I am wrong about him being convicted of a crime and the vid shows him decking her, then I apologize in advance.

there was vid in the elevater. the girl was supposedly hitting rice and he got sick of it and KO her.
pretty sure both were drunk. pretty sure both regretted it the next day. sure they got married after. sure she went to the nfl pleading rice case. don't know how the nfl could have done any different my self.

Thanks. Your previous article answered my question about him being charged w/a crime.
I watched the video and it did not show him hitting her. I don't know........maybe there is another one? Or, did he admit to it? I really don't know. I just thought it was weird that the video showed her passed out, but no punches. I was wondering if she was drunk.

they showed it on like the 6 am morning news the next morning and I think the court took the tape as evidence and made them stop showing it. they did let them show the after effects however. But she was pretty ticked and going after him tooth claw and foot and then he just snapped and hit her one time.

So why isn't he going to jail if there is proof that he hit her and knocked her out? Does the victim have to press charges? Are the authorities not allowed to convict someone by using a video as proof?
It seems weird.

The prosecutor can press on without the victim if there is enough other substantial evidence. Unfortunately, I've seen a ton of these cases end in probation or fines. Even in one case where the victim was pregnant...

It would have just been an embarrassing mess but he would have pleaded self defense and it would have been a mute point. Could never have gotten a jury to convict but the DA that got them into counseling, did the right thing for everyone.

Every time he was found "guilty" he was punished...NFL & NCAA. Should he be re-punished for past infractions?
This particular time he appears to be "not guilty". Hence...people are defending an innocent guy being called "guilty".
(FYI: I put guilty and not guilty in quotes so as to differentiate the law of the land from the NFL rules.)
Ray Rice appeared to be guilty and "guilty" of assault...Josh appears to be "not guilty" and not guilty of testing for pot use.
You are seeing hypocrisy because you are comparing apples to oranges. (Rice's infraction to Gordon's I-don't-know-what)

I think the law is on Rice's side - why they didn't pursue a conviction. Law is he put her hands on him first. I think Peen would verify Legality 101 there is now law for men different for women.
Moral Law is a different thing. Which I think is what the NFL gets more involved with. Oh they will wait for arrest n stuff to be over with and then come down with their action. Just like Gordon, where was he convicted of smoking weed, using codeine? Its a Moral code established by the NFL on drugs that is in effect. Not LEGAL Law.
I think the question on Goodell's decision is what Moral tone is he setting with this light suspension. At first I thought well I'm a Browns fan so I hate everything Raven...but soon found this was a MORAL out cry from well...Everywhere!

I think the other head scratcher about the Ray Rice suspension is how Big Ben got 6 games (reduced to 4) for something he was never charged for either (sexual assault)
