So you think the Patriots put a tender on Mallett (last year the transition tag for a QB was $14.6M)? Then other teams will just say, "If you want to pay him that much, then you keep him." Knowing that the Patriots will eventually cut him.
If the Patriots were going to get any value for Mallett is was going to come in the off-season before the draft. Now they get nothing.
QBs get hurt all the time in preseason. never know.

The only reason I'd disagree with that, is I think it'd be good for Johnny (Or vise versa for Brian) to have Hoyer behind him on the depth chart..
A lot more competition than Rex.
See, what you don't get is that at that point you aren't looking to create competition. I know coaches talk about that, but once you give a 1st round QB the ball, you are going with him....rookie mistakes and all. You're all in. You don't want 45% of the stadium chanting the other guys name.
You want your guy to take his lumps and turn in to the guy you hoped he will become.

Obviously if something unexpected happens then all of this is a moot point. I thought that went without saying.

The more I think about it, the more I'd be inclined to keep Hoyer. You always need more than 1 QB during the season and we basically have Hoyer's fate in our own hands (monetarily as well). If he doesn't play well, he doesn't get paid. If he doesn't play at all, he doesn't get paid.
There's very little downside to keeping him as JFF's backup (unless we get a sweet deal of course)
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

Which is it?

Pettine would look awfully silly if he said all of these things about keeping Hoyer and then Hoyer was traded. He doesn't seem like the type of guy who is going to say things like that knowing they aren't true.
The only way to justify a Hoyer trade would be, like you said, getting extremely high value in return for him. Obviously if the Texans offer a 3rd round pick for a guy who has no real future on our team we would have to do it. They will not be making that call.

I'd take a 3rd for Hoyer I believe. The ONE thing that has me thinking Hoyer is on the block is the Grossman signing. He is a capable backup option and is experienced with the system.
But I still don't think a trade happens.

not going to argue with you. you want to believe getting rid of talent so JFF doesn't have to compete for the starting job. fine. I think people who think like that don't have the brains to pee down wind instead of up wind but whatever floats your boat.

I never got the philosophy of keeping a loser QB like Grossman, Weeden, and Campbell on the roster. Might as well give the reigns to Connor Shaw and the trick shot dude instead. We'll probably win the same amount of games.

Except Rex might make the learning curve for Manziel less steep. He's been in this offense for a long time. That's my reasoning at least.

Wow........another great exchange.
Anyway, about trading Hoyer: I kinda doubt this is true, but let's say it is. I have no idea what we would get in return, but it couldn't be too much. NFL teams don't give up a lot in trades.
Furthermore, while I have been supporting JM lately, we have no clue if his game will transition well to regular season games. He is also small and very brave. That could lead to energies.
No one who has watched Sexy Rexy play would want him to be our backup qb. Some might say so now, but they really haven't watched him play. The guy sucks. I don't think he is even a good mentor. Yes, he knows the offense, but the guy is football dumb. He takes all kinds of stupid chances. He is NOT a cerebral qb.
If I am the Browns, I am rolling w/both Hoyer and Manziel unless some team makes a ridiculous offer for Hoyer, which I seriously doubt will happen.

what they are made for. but really. why would I care what people think that say a 1 yard first down is better than a 7 yard pass that gets more yards? people that want to get rid of nfl talent just so JFF doesn't have to worry about his spot? stupid, asinine.

General notes, some you are involved with. some not.
1. Partial true, once 1st 2nd round pick QB is placed as starter its a commitment for the season. Pretty much why I want JM to learn more before getting that commitment. The part of Comfort and getting rid of the guy close to him. Well that part is an UNTRUTH. Or better to say not fitting in the process.
That was done yes, with DA n Frye. a. JM aint no DA - DA had confidence problems, JM has no such insecurities. b. Hoyer ain't no Frye. A small handed no spin struggling 1st 2nd year player. That is not who Hoyer is, he a legit starter even if its a Bridge QB (temp)
2. I agree with Vers except I will not be as kind as him. What are you all freaking crazy? Why oh why would we TRADE HOYER!?!? Again I wish us to sign him to a 3 year contract. Let him play. JM wins the Starting role in 2015...THEN WE TRADE HIM. Right now if we traded him - a QB coming off of an ACL injury and 4 starts and no contract after 2014. If we get ANYTHING it would be a 7th rounder. You know what some of you state Maggert would bring in for the PATS...lol
3. Rex is replacing THIGPEN! what is so hard to get about that. As was spotted by Vers and probably all of us who watched the game. After each series the QB Coach JM and Thigpen would all be sitting there discussing JM's business. I think its no coincidence that we cut Thigpen and signed Grossman right after that. Who better to fit that role. Hoyer already stated he's not going to be mean to JM but he is not there to Mentor him.
well forgot the rest...lol jmho
Defense wins championships. Watson play your butt off! Go Browns! CHRIST HAS RISEN! GM Strong! & Stay safe everyone!

I believe the very idea of letting your second best talent at any position go just to squelch any type of fan opinions or controversy is not sound coaching.
JF is an unproven NFL talent. He is a scrambling QB which increases the odds of injury. There is no doubt that if something like that would happen to occur, that out of all the QB's on this roster, Hoyer would give us the best chance to win.
You don't risk being a losing team based upon fan pressure or controversy. A strong coach would put the quality of depth above all else. He would keep the players who best give us the chance to win above all else.
That would be Johnny Football and Brian Hoyer. Any coach who puts fan opinions and controversy above the best interest of the teams ability to win and keeping the best players available on the roster is not a strong or wise head coach. He is bowing to the fans opinions and possible controversy above the best interests of the team.
Unless we get some very good offer for Hoyer, there's no way that Brian Hoyer should not be on this roster. No HC in their right mind would even consider such a thing.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

At this point it likely doesn't matter, the ball is completely in Hoyer's court and there's no reason for him stay here unless it's for a ton of money or Manziel is gone...

Stay in Cleveland where a large group of the fanbase hates me now.. With a high profile backup.. Causing every incompletion I throw to possibly lead me to be benched.. Or.. Go to a Dome team.. With the best Defensive player in the league leading a solid defense.. And get to throw TDs to him.. Choices.. choices.. [This post contains mild hyperbole]
Am I the only one that pronounces hyperbole "Hyper-bowl" instead of "hy-per-bo-le"?

[This post contains mild hyperbole] You're right of course but if Manziel were gone I would expect the lure of the hometown would be pretty strong assuming the money is similar to somewhere else. That's not to say that he dislikes Manziel, just that the distraction has got to go and the FO needs to be able to get a reboot to tell him he's the guy. (I'm not saying he necessarily is in my opinion just that, that is what I would expect him to need to stay.)
