Heh... I am really understanding more and more why I never wanted to draft this kid in the first place. He has no clue what he's saying, maybe he needs to take a bill from his money phone and snort up another line of coke.
Got what you wanted Haslam, I know he has sold many jerseys. Hopefully the profit from the jerseys and the JF "hype" supersedes us actually putting players on the NFL field that can a NFL game and win for this city.

I would say that's unbelievable but it's basically what he's shown us from day one.

What this thread needs is some petrol on the fire. As per Mary Kay on the Twittersphere. Manziel: "I have to take this a lot more seriously, it's a job for me now" "I still had the college mindset a little bit" Ok.......GO!! and then he said Mary Kay Cabot ‏@MaryKayCabot Despite that Johnny Manziel vows to "take this more seriously,'' says "I don't feel like I would have done anything different'' since draft. So.......let's paraphrase: I need to do things differently. I wouldn't do things differently. there we have it folks. He's matured to the point that he knows he needs to do things differently, yet he wouldn't change what he's done this year.

So far the only thing keeping him from busting harder than Jamarcus Russell is he wasn't taken #1 overall.
We should've got bridgewater.

Success is often measured in the response to adversity, not to adversity.
So Manziel has been the golden boy, and found that even gold requires polishing.
He has an off season. My opinions will be formed by how much is not on social media and trolling Las Vegas for photo ops.
Welcome back, Joe, we missed you!

I would love to agree with you,But I can not . I start off every season with the be patient , develop the guy attitude. And normally It lasts for a few weeks, not much more than that. I rest my case. Two weeks? I would love to see us give someone...anyone, wether it's Hoyer, Manziel, or some other unfortunate soul, at least 3 years. In my opinion that is when you are going to see solid consistent play. And thats provided the system stays the same. Maybe both of these guys suck. But when you say Hoyer has been in the league for five years, what does that mean? He sat behind Brady, got what one start in Arizona, gets cut from the steelers after training camp. Where in there did he get a chance? One start and behind to franchise guys? And he's not accurate? Says who, the stats? Please. Thats the only variable you see? You have no clue how accurate he is. None. All you can do is look at the results and speculate on where the ball is supposed to go. Most of that is timing, and practice. By your standards the rams should never have signed Warner out of the grocery store. And Manziel....how many kids don't realize the gravity of things when they are 22? How many college players never transition to the pros because they can't adapt? I could care less if Manziel looks like crap right now, i could also care less if his ego is bruised, or that he got hurt, or that he might be an immature entitled punk who says stupid crap to the media. What the real question should be, is what will he do in the face of adversity. According to you we shouldn't bother. And that is exactly why we don't have a qb. Maybe both of these guys aren't the answer. Personally I think neither has had enough time to judge them. Maybe we draft yet another guy. But someday we are actually going to have to give someone more than 2 weeks. When we actually commit to someone, and let them grow, then we might actually get the results that you desire. But until then you keep giving them a whole 2 hours of play before writing them off. I'm sure after 2 hours you knew your job like the best of the best too.

When a guy constantly throws off his back foot, and sometimes even hops, you don't need to speculate on where the ball was supposed to go when figuring out whether or not it's accuracy issues. By your standards the rams should never have signed Warner out of the grocery store. A few posts above this, you made a Drew Brees comparison/analogy. I don't think we should be comparing him to other QB's, but if we're going to go that route, it certainly shouldn't be Hall of Famers. Brandon Weeden and Brady Quinn or the guys who posted as atrocious of numbers as he did would make more sensible comparisons than Brees and Warner.

Okay Brownie...your trying to be the nice guy and post reasoning here...
I would love to agree with you,But I can not . I start off every season with the be patient , develop the guy attitude. And normally It lasts for a few weeks, not much more than that.
You want to develop Hoyer ? How do you want to be patient and develop a guy who has been in the league for 5 seasons... Been on 4 teams and has the worst accuracy in the league ?
So i will ask.. How long does it take to develop into a starter quality QB who doesn't fall apart at the middle of the season when winning counts and having 5 years in the league...Hoyer is another Matt Flynn... nothing more.
Now lets discuss developing JM... Here's a guy who can't play the last game of the year because some bigger guy fell on him.
Over and over on this board and other places it was said he was to small and ran around to much to handle the abuse.
Yep, he got almost 6 quarters of being the starter before getting pounced on and getting a big bruise.
I saw JM jump off both his feet to see across the line to throw a pass... And really if JM wanted this job so bad, then why isn't he starting Sunday to show his toughness..
I watched his injury over and over... wow wait til he really gets a hit...
So I can see why fans and players say what they do..seems to me it's a hopeless case... Hey if your cool on developing these kinds of QB's Then I wish you the best.
I would like to add.. that I do want to see us develop a QB and I will have the patience... But not for either of these guys.. +1

Might as well see if he can be a backup next year, anyway.

General reply.
I almost can't stand reading this anymore. Hoyer sucks. Manziel sucks. I swear to God that Kosar and Couch are dead on.
imo Hoyer didn't get enough time, and Manziel certainly didn't get enough time. But hey...lets do what we have always done. Panic.
How about we let somebody develop a bit before we judge them?
We do need to start Shaw off the practice squad so he can struggle and we can tear him up too. Then we can finally get down to business of discussing which qb we will rush to judgement and ruin in the draft.
I hope with all my heart that this owner and front office are different. Freakin' pick someone and develop them. Personally? Sometimes I think it's best just to cut your losses and move on. I think Hoyer had enough time to show us what he has (and unfortunately doesn't have), but I wouldn't mind seeing him stay as a backup QB next year. Manziel? He was a trainwreck. I would have liked to have seen him play more, but right now, for what we've all seen? Lord have mercy! Bust. -I hope if Shaw starts on Sunday he tears the Ravens up! lol. Oh i see, we need Brady, or Manning, or Luck. It would never happen here. You don't even want to start the season with a first rounder. No way you would have started a 7th rounder. If Bledsoe doesn't get hurt, Brady probably never gets a chance to be what he is. Your surely entitled to your opinion, and you may very well be 100% correct, but do you hear yourself? Less than a season and Hoyer sucks...yeah cut him. What if Mack doesn't get hurt? Or Gordon is never suspended? How about if we had vet receivers that ran awesome routes? How about if our qb had a few years to know his receivers like the back of his hand? Does that improve accuracy? Technically not but it makes for a completion now and then. Those usually get labeled as accurate. The poor throws, you know the ones, to nobody, or the other team....those are usually labeled 'not accurate'. Sometimes you would be right, but not always. And Manziel is a bust...lol yeah...maybe. Maybe Tom Brady was just a 7th round backup. Maybe Couch was a pro bowler for the Eagles, and McNab was a bust. Well at least they got some time. And finally Connor Shaw. Our Savior. lol...he could be. By your logic he won't be though. Right off the practice squad...Hey son, "The hopes and dreams of millions of impatient fans are riding on what you do today." Basically your expectations are whacked. Just because we haven't had a qb since Bernie, doesn't mean that we can be impatient. I hope he starts and wins. Thats a victory, knocking the rats out of the playoffs. Are we good next year with him if he does? One win? I mean he was on the practice squad. Surely we need to draft someone else...especially if he didn't pass all that much. I mean if we run it down their throats all game we still need a qb no? There is no where in the world where the 'finished product' just pops into being. It takes time, and a lot of work. What if we watched Manziel struggle for a year, then another, then he starts playing awesome. Thats Drew Brees. We would have ruined him too. The reason we are constantly struggling to be relevant, is we can't just leave it alone. 14 year of sucking doesn't change the fact that we still need to work thru the pains of developing someone. Then we just might see what we all desire. Good solid football with a good qb. @ BrownieElf: It seems we both want the same thing, QB-wise, a decent guy who will grow in his skillset throughout the years. The problem is we don't have a good enough QB to start with. Hoyer is a career backup who did us well for awhile, then fell apart. And he's right towards the bottom, stat-wise. Accept the truth. Keeping two subpar QB's for a few years to see if one or both will develop is like beating a dead horse. As I said before Hoyer would be good to keep as a backup, but not as a starter anymore. He very much seems limited, talent-wise. He got worse as the season progressed. When our center went down other teams DARED US to pass - even the announcers said it over and over again. Why? They knew Hoyer was iffy at best. Was it all his fault? No. But he was off target quite a bit at times. Good QB's will rise to the occasion. He fell. If you think we should keep both Manziel and Hoyer, then maybe - just maybe? we should give ol' Tim Tebow a call too? Everybody likes Tebow!!! Maybe he just needs more time to develop? And perhaps we can even see if we can bring back Trent Richarson and give him some more 'developmental time' also? As I said before - sometimes you just gotta cut your losses & move on. One more thing... I'm not trying to be mean here, but your signature says, "Attitude is everything....FEAR THE ELF!!!" Just for the record: Attitude isn't everything. If that was so Manziel would be at least developing into a devil-may-care superstar right now. Instead he's fallen flat on his face. And what is up with 'FEAR THE ELF!!!'? Was that meant to be sarcastic? No one fears elves, Brownie Elf, nor cuddly kittens, nor teddy bears, for that matter. ...And especially not Johnny Football. All debating set aside, believe-it-or-not I respect your opinions and know what you are saying, I just don't think Hoyer - nor especially Manziel - has what it takes to be a great QB. And if they do, I'm just not seeing it. - Merry Christmas -

Very few qb's can throw off their back foot and be accurate. Usually when thats happening a qb doesn't have time to throw. And that certainly affects accuracy. And Hoyer hops? When has he done this? If you can't simply see that other things affect the stats then i can't help you. Your statement that he's 'not accurate' is pure speculation, because you have no idea where the target was, and it doesn't show the other things that affect a throw.
Then only thing it does show is the result. Earlier in the year Hoyer was more accurate, then we have Mack injured, Hoyer starts getting pressured and hit more, and his accuracy drops. This is the same for any qb.
And those comparisons are perfectly legit. We would have gave up on Brees. He didn't become really good until he went to the Saints. You cannot say that Manziel or Hoyer couldn't end up becoming a solid player over time.
And why not Kurt Warner....he was washed up....bagging groceries. Hoyer is at least still in the league. The light can go on for anyone.
All you see is the stats, not the entire situation.
Attitude is everything....FEAR THE ELF!!!

Just a few short games ago, when we beat Cinci, it was making a lot of sense to sign Hoyer for some time, and let Manziel develop. So yeah, its possible.
Twenty-one qb's...all drafted in the NFL, and not one given have a chance to amount to anything. Keep telling yourself that these guys suck. You know what does suck? The situation they were all thrust into.
You keep drafting qbs, and judging them inside of a year. I guess when we find that rookie super accurate all-pro, that can single handedly take us to the superbowl, regardless of what happens around him, then we'll be al set. Problem is, that guy doesn't exist.
Andrew Luck is arguably one of the best qb prospects (look up that word) to come out in a long time. Where's his superbowl? How did Luck look for most of the game against us? Pretty crapy. He found a way to get it done, but so has Hoyer.
How did Manning look against Cinci? Like crap.
Indy and Denver are soliid teams, and even they have bad games. We were solid but thin, with 2 new systems, and a ton of young players, and you expect consistency?
All i'm saying is that any player given time in a system can improve. You never know until you give them the chance. We never give anyone that chance, and I think that is why we see the results that we do.
And as far as my sig. Whatever. You're not trying to be mean....what are you trying to be? I can think of a few things, and they would all get me banned. Might be worth it.
Attitude is everything. Since when does a poor or bad attitude get you anywhere?
And the Elf? The to me symbolizes a time when this team was awesome and won championships.
But that wasn't your point, and you didn't want an explanation....you were just tying to be 'cute'
Merry Christmas

What this thread needs is some petrol on the fire. As per Mary Kay on the Twittersphere. Manziel: "I have to take this a lot more seriously, it's a job for me now" "I still had the college mindset a little bit" Ok.......GO!! and then he said Mary Kay Cabot ‏@MaryKayCabot Despite that Johnny Manziel vows to "take this more seriously,'' says "I don't feel like I would have done anything different'' since draft. Johnny is in a tough spot, and he is the one who put him there. On one hand he can say that he wasn't taking it seriously enough and that he will from now on. This makes him look like an entitled ass who thought he can breeze through the NFL like he did in college and despite everything he has heard from those who came before him, he didn't "get it" until he fell flat on his face and realized that the NFL is made up of only the best of the best from college. This explanation will make some of his detractors feel validated. On the other hand, his other option, he can say that he "got it" from day one and has been taking the job seriously and that was not the problem. While this does not make him look like an entitled ass who thought he can breeze through the NFL like he did in college it does make him look like he does not have the skills to play QB in the NFL. This explanation will make his other detractors feel validated. Saying both of these things .... I suppose was another approach. I suspect the homeless in Cleveland are finding it more difficult to get handouts from Browns' fans now.

I can't see him as a starter yet. And better see what his injury history could be as "the Man."
I am a bit troubled that after the stench settled, he really wants to talk about himself, his epiphany, how much harder he will work, and it goes on.
Where was the effort up front? Why not do it then, before? Right now it seems like trying to talk himself into being here. It was monumentally bad. Raises the questions of coachability.
I want to see Shaw in action. He is the wild card perhaps. Not that he is great (who knows?), but by default. Think we owe him a fair measurement.
Whassamatter, PDR? Aren't you looking forward to the Annual QB Competition next season? We may have misjudged the talent here. I don't care to lose games just to develop arguable and undemonstrated upside next year at QB.

Coming out of college, I liked Shaw better then Manziel. I couldn't understand why Manziel was considered 1st round talent and Shaw UDFA talent. Of course I might have a little bias. I live in NC and see a lot of Gamecocks games - though not particularly a Gamecock fan. They are on tv a lot. This kid has game.

Thats good to hear, I don't know much about him, other than seeing him in pre-season. I guess the million dollar question is what makes these guys what they are? I think it has a ton to do with money. Manziel got handed a bunch based on his potential. He can then skate or bust his butt. Seems to me he wasn't doing something, or he wouldn't have said conflicting statements to the media. I would guess that Manziel knows he didn't try his hardest, and he wasn't up to the task. Does that means he's done? Maybe? But it depends on what he does now. As a first rounder he will probably get a chance to show something. On the flip side you have the rookie fa like shaw. He didn't get the money, but he got a chance. This is where you find the hidden gem that works hard and becomes a good player. These are the types of players i would want on my team. They have to earn every nickel. These guys might never get a chance, and if they do, it will be limited. I do think some of the dynamic has changed with the new rookie cap, but you still would like to hit on draft picks in the higher rounds. I would imagine that draft status has mostly to do with your level of competition. Play well against good competition, and you get drafted high like Manziel. Take a guy like Desir...played for a smaller school..not ranked as high. Why was Gilbert picked sooner? Because someone thinks he will develop into a great corner. So far it seems that Desir worked harder than Gilbert, and it shows on the field. Hoyer worked harder than Manziel and it showed. With Manziel was it work ethic or cockiness? I hoping Manziel thought he could step in and be great like he was in college, and had a rude awakening. If he didn't he'll be done. If he did then there is hope for him yet. If Shaw plays great then go into next season with both, pick one and give the guy a few years. We just have to bite the bullet and do it.

His only mistake....trying to be brutally honest and hard on himself and saying it in public.
One is football also the other is probably on his youthful participation in parties...that part is what he meant about doing different.
The other part was probably more his evaluation on what he ahs to do from here forward. Work harder, yada yada.
Doesn't have to be that way. But you have to be a mind reader to get it right...don't read quotes from a convo and then apply it to what mindset?

So, Jester, "kid has game" in your opinion. Glad to hear someone has seen him a bunch. What does he have that had you rate him highly? What does the quote refer to on the field. Spurrier was very high on him if I recall. A little "show and tell" about what to look for if he starts or plays Sunday, please.

I agree with you, I didn't want Manziel and I live in SEC country so I had an opportunity to watch Shaw a few times. I think he's as good as JF but more mature, he puts his head in the books type of guy.

I remember reading that he had only 1 pick. How was the team around him? In other words, did he have to pass a lot to win games, or did the defense or running game always give him a lead?

I know you asked Jester, but I live in Columbia, SC and saw a lot of Shaw. Here's my take:
Strengths:
--Great speed as a runner --Tough, gritty competitor --Doesn't make many stupid decisions --Can find open receivers --Puts touch on the ball, especially the shorter throws.
Weaknesses: --Small and skinny --Injured a lot --Lacks deep-ball accuracy --Lobs too many passes --Not familiar w/going through his progressions --Ball placement [accuracy] is iffy on anything other than slants and passes to the flat --Had lowest ball velocity of all QBs at Combine.
Conclusion: I like the kid's toughness, leadership, and speed. Was a huge upgrade over Garcia at SC. I think he has a place as a 3rd string qb in this league, but will never challenge for a starting position.

Let me start with his downside - He isn't very big. I think he has similar size to Manziel. I am not sold on his arm strength. But I find that hard to judge on tv. His biggest attribute in my opinion is that he stays calm. Manziel showed great escapability but always seemed frantic to me in doing so. Shaw always seems calm, under control and aware of his surroundings. Shaw is a very good runner but prefers to throw rather than run. He also throws a good ball on the run, especially when rolling out to the left. Good decision maker. Accurate mostly. Leader. Seems to have it above the shoulders. http://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/connor-shaw-1.htmlHere is a link to his college stats Senior year: 24 td 1 int, 2447 passing yards in the SEC Overall I had him targeted as 5th/6th round pick prospect if we didn't get Bridgewater (my guy - I was all for tanking for Teddy last year). I don't think that he has the size and strength to ever be elite. But who knows, Brady & Brees didn't look to have the size and strength to be elite either. I do think that he could become a solid guy.

I
I want to see Shaw in action. He is the wild card perhaps. Not that he is great (who knows?), but by default. Think we owe him a fair measurement. I hope he tears it up and we have to retire his number after a lengthy career. I hope so too .... but I'm not going to hold my breath that it happens .....

Would Sam Bradford be a good fit for us? A guy who cannot stay on the field will never be a good fit for a team that struggles to have the same QB who started a season finish it.

Thanks, Vers. TWO good lists. How much might be fixable? Ryan played with occasional helicopter passes, Sipe had a ball deep "might not break a pane of glass", and I am sure others come out easily enough. If he is a solid backup after this game, I call him a keeper. Build around it. Maybe jettison one of the three.
I only saw him twice, I believe. Impressed me as smart and "gritty" baller who didn't rattle. JM seems rattled at the start and runs to calm down. Hoping something good for Sunday.

Just one pick? Incredible. Do we credit Shaw, OC, receivers, passing tree scheme? Part has to be CS, because we "can't separate the dancer from the dance" as Yeats said.
