I heard, but don't know for sure, that we had to use the disability exemption in this trade. That is correct. We could do so because Shumpert will be a restricted free agent after this season, and thus fits the "1 year remaining on his contract" aspect of the exception. We still have a $5.3 million exception. From earlier in this thread: Cleveland Cavaliers received J.R. Smith, Iman Shumpert as part of three-team trade | cleveland.com http://www.cleveland.com/cavs/index.ssf/2015/01/cleveland_cavaliers_expected_t_3.html#incart_2boxTo acquire Shumpert, the Cavs used their one-time Disabled Player Exception (worth $4.9 million) they received for losing starting center Anderson Varejao for the season last month. Those exceptions can be used on one-year players; Shumpert is a restricted free agent this summer. Cleveland still has its roughly $5.3 million trade exception. _________________________

that just made this trade a little less good

We still have the larger trade exception available, so it doesn't really hurt us that much. You can only use one exception per trade anyway. What hurts us is our lack of decent trade pieces.

I can't get too excited about this trade. Not feeling it, unless that first round pick leads to something else, such as us acquiring a big.

Cavs in talks to add Timofey Mozgov Updated: January 7, 2015, 3:38 PM ET By Marc Stein and Brian Windhorst | ESPN.com 91COMMENTS2EMAILPRINT The Cleveland Cavaliers are in advanced discussions with the Denver Nuggets to acquire longtime trade target Timofey Mozgov, according to league sources. Sources told ESPN.com that the Cavaliers, who have been pursuing Mozgov for months to fill their huge need for a basket protector, are prepared to send at least one future first-round pick and possibly additional assets to the Nuggets for Mozgov, after Denver rejected months of trade proposals for the Russian center. The deal, sources said, could be completed as early as Wednesday. The Cavaliers acquired an extra first-round pick to peddle from Oklahoma City as part of the three-team trade they struck with the Thunder and New York Knicks on Monday in which Cleveland acquired J.R. Smith and Iman Shumpert and surrendered Dion Waiters. Mozgov played for first-year Cavs coach David Blatt on the Russian national team and has been targeted by Cleveland since the summer as the ideal candidate to fill the club's glaring need for a rim presence defensively, which has grown in the wake of Anderson Varejao's season-ending Achilles injury last month. link

So, potentially, Dion + Memphis 1st rounder (assuming we give them the OKC pick & Memphis) for Shump, JR Smith, and Mozgov?

Griffin is earning his paycheck this week. I just hope Shump isn't part of the deal to get Moz. The initial report was that Denver had been rejecting the original trade because they didn't want Dion. Hopefully just an extra draft pick is all they are looking for.

It's the Memphis and OKC pick we traded. We still have our own pick too. We'll probably either package that pick with Haywood next year or use it to draft a backup PG.

Griffin is earning his paycheck this week. Yup. Sam Amico ‏@SamAmicoFSO Cavs GM David Griffin has now turned Dion Waiters into a perimeter defender, a veteran spot-up shooter and a guy who can protect the basket.

Cavaliers trade for Nuggets' Timofey Mozgov - CBSSports.com http://www.cbssports.com/nba/eye-on-bask...ey-mozgov-tradeKen Berger of CBSSports.com confirms a Yahoo Sports report that the Cleveland Cavaliers have traded two first-round picks to the Denver Nuggets for center Timofey Mozgov. The picks include Oklahoma City's 1-18-protected first-rounder they acquired in the Dion Waiters deal, and the Memphis' Grizzlies' 1-5 and 15-30 protected first-rounder this season (which becomes only top five protected in two years). ESPN first reported Wednesday that the Cavs were in "advanced discussions" for Mozgov. Take it in conjunction with the Cavaliers' acquisition of a first-round pick from the Thunder in the Dion Waiters trade, and the Cavs could wind up moving Dion Waiters for Mozgov, J.R. Smith, and Iman Shumpert. That's a great return for the former No.4 pick that clashed with teammates and never really felt comfortable. For Denver, why would they make this deal? Well, Mozgov has been great over the past year for Denver. He's low maintenance, high-effort, coachable, a good locker room guy and very capable on both ends of the floor. But rookie Jusef Nurkic has been incredible in limited time, enough to warrant minutes. With Darrell Arthur and J.J. Hickson able to play backup center, and the Nuggets floundering with little hope of the playoffs, the Nuggets can withstand to move Mozgov, especially for a pick. Cleveland on the other hand won't get a rotation player with a pick in the 20's which the Thunder pick is likely to be, or their own, which is likely to be high-teens. So moving the pick for Mozgov is a slam dunk. The Cavs need a rim protector above all else, and will have improved their interior and exterior defense in two moves along with the addition of Shumpert. That Mozgov has a long-standing and positive relationship with David Blatt factors in here as well; Mozgov will buy into what Blatt wants immediately. It's also the best fit Kevin Love has ever had next to him at center, a defensive force at seven feet to help rebound and take the dirty work of post defense. Love benefits from this deal more than anyone outside of Blatt. The bigger question is if this indicates a firesale beginning for the Nuggets, who need to go 35-12 to hit 50 wins. For Cleveland, it would be a major step forward by acquiring the kinds of players they need to contend right now.

Mozgov will fill #Cavs trade exception. After this, they'll have their own 1st round picks in '15, '17 and beyond. No 2nd rounder until 2020 Translation- Our last remaining asset is Haywoods contract next year.

If JR opts in Next year we'll have his 6 mil expiring deal..

If JR opts in Next year we'll have his 6 mil expiring deal.. It's almost unfair. lol Man, to add a starting SG who fits exactly what this team needs, and a starting C who fits even better, is just amazing. To think that we only really gave up Waiters for those 2, plus JR Smith as well, is amazing. The 1st round pick we gave up from Memphis is really heavily protected. IIRC, it will not be conveyed this year, the way Memphis is playing. I remember reading a bunch of articles lately that asked, essentially, why Griffin was even bothering with trying to get Mozgov, because we didn't have any assets to go get him with. Well, he created an asset, along with improving a position on the team, all at the same time, and managed to pull off the trade on top of that. Just incredible. Well done Mr Griffin. Well done. Our staring 5 is now: Irving Shumpert Lebron Love Mozgov Who would have thought that possible a few weeks ago?

Technically right now Shumpert, LeBron, and Love are injured.. and Mosgov isn't here yet.. So I don't wanna see what our starting 5 really is right now

We essentially flipped Dion, who was a ball-stopping 2 guard that didn't want to play defense or come off the bench ... for a 2 guard that WILL play defense, and pretty well at that, a guard that will be happy coming of the bench and a defensive center that we've been looking for all along.

I have a question. We got that injury exemption for Andy ... is that just for salary, or do we get a roster spot too?
I thought it was just salary, but I am not hugely up on NBA rules like that.

I thought it was just salary, but I am not hugely up on NBA rules like that. It's just for salary. He would have to take one of the three "Injured" Reserve spots that are usually occupied by uninjured fringe players.

I also have to ask, if we do not get an additional roster spot, because I am fairly sure we do not, then who would you drop for Dalembert? We have a lot of backup G/SF types, and James Jones. Would you drop Delly, Harris, Price, or Jones? I would sure love to add another big body.

I'm not dropping Harris.. He's young and can shoot..
I might even drop Marion.. because the only thing he was here for was defense, and we now have Shumpert for that..
And also so I never have to see him attempt a 3 again.. *shudders*

He also registered close to 2 blocks a game in limited minutes. I'm also hoping we can get him. I don't think we can claim him with our salary cap numbers the way they are. We would likely have to wait 48 hours and hope nobody else can claim him. Then we'd have to hope he picks us over other teams in Free Agency.

Makes sense. That leaves us one under the 15 player max, including Mozgov. (If I counted right) That leaves us with: Delly Harris Haywood Irving James Jones Love Marion Miller Mozgov Shumpert Smith Thompson Varejao Yep, one open roster spot, just waiting for a certain big man without a team at present to come fill. (At least I hope so anyway)

LOL This is pure JR Smith here ...... J.R. Smith on his role: 'When in doubt, shoot the ball' - CBSSports.com http://www.cbssports.com/nba/eye-on-bask...-shoot-the-ballSelf-awareness is good in the NBA. Knowing who you are and what you do for your team. And confidence is good. And J.R. Smith has both, in abundance. Smith was asked about what his role is on the Cavaliers in his first pre-game availability since being traded to Cleveland Monday. His answer? Dave McMenamin ✔ @mcten Follow JR Smith on how he'll play with the Cavs without knowing the playbook: "My motto is, 'When in doubt, shoot the ball'" 6:00 PM - 7 Jan 2015 Pure, 100 percent J.R. Smith right there. For reference, Smith is shooting 40.2 percent from the field this season, and a decent 36 percent from 3-point range. Here's his heat map, via NBA Savant: So yeah, the guy does shoot, and if he's shooting threes, it's not bad. But Smith also can severely hinder his team when he starts gunning. He has no filter on his heat checks, and will outright disobey whatever the coach is calling for in order to get a shot up if he's feeling it. How he manages to temper microwave vs. anchor will be key for the Cavaliers. But if nothing else, that's an incredible quote.

I was thinking about adding Dalembert, not Allen. I really don't see a spot for Allen right now. We could really use another big though.

first, I knew you were talking about Dalembert, which is why I was reminding you that we may be saving the spot for Ray.
also, Dalembert has to clear waivers, then will have to want to sign with us. we definitely need a big more than a wing right now. I do worry that Dalembert has been hurt this year though because he's been awful.

The price tag on Mozgov was steep, but I think he can be a great fit alongside a scoring 4 in Love.
This team looks really good on paper, but it needs to come together pretty soon. All star weekend will be here in no time.

LOL..........okay, this changes my perception of the trade. Looks good now. Getting that first round pick was the real key to the original deal. Not sure about Smith at this point in time. He amazes me. I was going to say at times, but really, he amazes in both positive and negative ways. This team needs discipline. It needs toughness, both mental and physical toughness. It needs for LeBron to be a leader by being a role model. It needs for LeBron--and then the others--to buy into Blatt's system and stop the stupid playground ball crap. They have a chance now. We'll see how it unfolds.
