While I don't disagree with the idea that we cannot kill our way out of this, it had to be a broader strategy. I have long said that those who have nothing to live for will find something to fie for. We have to find a way to help those in the region find things to live for. This means that their incredible rich governments have to spread some of their great wealth around to help their people. We cannot do it all. We can lead, and push, cajole, and so on .... but we simply are not able to do it all ourselves.

They won't change until they want to change. We've learned about 9 times now that ousting a dictator only leads to a different, often worse, dictator taking over.

But this next time will be different!

Oh, I agree with that. However, we do a lot to help prop up a lot of those bums, so we have some degree of power over them because of that, which can be used. It's not a 100% foolproof option, but there are no perfect solutions in that part of the world. Diplomacy is the art of the possible, so we should be pushing for all that is possible.

I think they shall hide behind the racism commentary. This Venn diagram will show dramatically different formation in a decade............if it is even currently accurate if CHS had to "play with it" to get some info to show up. Laughable!!!

The only way to stop the more violent middle east cultures(not all of them are) is to have control over their education system for about 200 years. Educated people with actual courage don't tolerate despotism for very long.

This was a discussion that was held just a few days after the attacks in Paris. Listen very carefully to what Salman Rushdie says at the 3:20 mark. It explains a lot.

In order for any reform to take place, the people over there must reach a point where they've simply had enough... and begin the process of extermination themselves. They must pressure their governments to step it up and they must take responsibility for their own educational reforms.

In some ways it's already happening. Turkey, Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon, the Saudis, UAR... all have stepped up their opposition to ISIL. If the region is to cleanse itself of this scourge of ignorance-based extremism, it must be ruthlessly efficient up-front, and doggedly persistent for decades after order has been gained.

One thing I'm certain of: it won't stick if we are the biggest actors in the theater. It MUST come from them, or there's no sense of ownership or responsibility in the outcome
