We are in the same position this year as we were last. Meathead is out for the year. Farmer didn't even sniff a WR then, and he won't now. He is uninterested in having a threat at the position. See wide receivers score, and in Farmers opinion scoring is evil.

Brown (14) Nelson (13) Cobb (12) Beckham (12) To me, it looks about even. You can score equally in the air as on the ground.

Just two things.
1. TCU had a superior D and was it White or the QB?
2. You just cannot teach speed.
But man he's got HANDS!!! And SIZE!!! You got to stop looking too much in detail what they do in college...its what they do that counts. Are they tough, are they football players. Can they make a good break on their route, are they Coach able to get off the press, this kid gets off the press and he is blowing by you!... They play back and he learns how to run good routes. He's got them on their heals. I don't get excited about WRs.
I am however excited about Kevin White.
Bonefish were you imitating me...pretty good except about the End Zone thing. For me the key is play action pass in the red zone. Why I think we need a bid WR. Hey btw is that kid from Seattle Super Bowl Matthews a free agent?
lol

You know, I thought the same thing last year and took a lot of grief from somebody. Who was that? I don't seem to recall at the moment.... lol
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

I liked Watkins...I know once the draft got closer I was thinking other things besides WR. Mostly thinking on QB and honestly hoping Bridgewater might have dropped to 4.
Look I believe in WRs - I don't think it necessary to have that elite WR. But you need good ones. I also think you can get complimentary and solid WRs anywhere in the draft.
For crying out loud the Seahawks picked up Matthews off the couch and he looked like a Pro Bowl WR in the Super Bowl! He was ON THE COUCH!
I do believe we need that Tall Miss Match WR especially in the Red Zone and especially inside the 10. Some one who can get the high slant with hands and difficult for a short miss match CB to defend unless he is a USDA named Butler. Or the Corner Fade route. I do agree that has to be a tall guy.
But I see guys like that coming from everywhere if we do our homework. But without the QB its moot.
My philosophy has always been we need 5 solid WRs who run good routes, have good hands, are disciplined and are Tough football players willing to do anything for the team! That is what you need for a championship. Rarely, Rarely do you see these first round elites in the SB. Ergo for me its not a Championship variable in the formula.

Just clicking... the thing I fear is that if we're stuck at #12, the top 3 receivers might all be gone. White moved his stock in the Top 10 with this combine. Cooper was already up there. And if both are gone by the time Minnesota is on the clock, I can absolutely see them reuniting Parker with Bridgewater.
Personally, I'd rather target a guy in Round 2 after trading up for Mariota. In a WR class this deep, you're always going to have a few guys slip a bit just because of how many there are. I have a feeling we can get a really, really good player like DGB/Strong/etc. in the 2nd if that's what we want.
We're... we're good?

I think if you have a #1 and #2 WR that demand double coverage then you will have an entire offense that benefits. You just need a QB that can get them the ball and a running game to take advantage of it.
This year We can't really get the QB, we have the HBs, so I hope we at least get one of the WR we desperately need.
You can't fix stupid but you can destroy ignorance. When you destroy ignorance you remove the justifications for evil. If you want to destroy evil then educate our people. Hate is a tool of the stupid to deal with what they can't understand.

DGB should be judged on whether DGB is going to be able to turn his life around and keep his head straight in the NFL. If Farmer believes that he will, then I'd have no problem with him being our WR. The lesson to be learned from the Gordon saga is to be more cautious and thorough when drafting character risks, not to draft all saints and choir boys.

Tab, I use to think it did not matter. Watching Crabtree, Dez, Blackmon, and Tavon Austin and how long it takes for development changed my mind.
You can flip it to the other side of the ball too. Gilbert, Browns CB, was lost. I think they have the physical gift but never tested, never developed, or elevated their game.
Maybe it is like that in most conferences outside the B1G and SEC. I should do a little research and determine the success rate! On second thought, I'll stick with my opinion being true!!!! LOL!

Damm Steelers used this theory for years. I guess it boils down to do you want a Dez like receiver or a team of Hines Wards? If Farmer can add a tall receiver who works like Gabriel and Hawkins, do you care where in the draft he is taken? Ideal situation is adding two tall guys and work tall and speed packages. Gabriel and Hawkins work it between the 20's. Have the tall guys work the red-zone. Plus you have two good RBs too. Can Benjamin stay healthy...bonus.

I feel like you're severely downplaying Antonio Browns talent.. He's a Top 5 WR, regardless of how tall he is...

Do we double cover a #1? No we just put Haden on him. But I agree that is why we need a QB right now teams beg us to beat them in the air. Until we start doing so - we can have all the stud WRs you want. Nothing will change.

To me, Antonio Brown plays a lot more like Hines Ward than Dez. By the way, I am not downplaying. I simply don't want a ton a cap wrapped up in one receiver. Not every team can sustain an offense like Denver. Remove Dez from Dallas's offense and what do you have left? Again, it all depends on how you favor your offense to look Dez or team of Hines Ward types. I get both arguments neither is a bad option.

jmho Not being an idiot here but explain Andy Dalton? When all healthy, it takes a pretty good defensive effort to shutdown that offense an entire game. Dalton must do extra work to make it fail.

I don't know about that, man.
Farmer drafted Gilbert and Manziel last year. Not sure why you trust his evaluation of character? Two parts: 1) I'm assuming that Farmer was only partially responsible for each as both Johnny (Haslam) and Gilbert (Pettine) had someone in their corner. 2) I'm assuming that Farmer isn't an idiot and took calculated risks on both of these guys. Given that they both blew up in his face and assuming that Farmer is smart enough to learn and wants to keep his job, I don't expect him to take another character risk unless he feels really good that it's in the past. A lot of assumptions going on there but if we end up taking DGB, either Farmer is incompetent or we should feel good that his character is better than we think.
We're... we're good?

Explain what? Dalton plugs away and is persistant and they win some games. But explain what? The Bengals don't beat the good teams especially when they count. They have had a good HOME record and their D keeps them in games. Again I'm not quite sure what you are saying...the WRs carry that team? Maybe so, Maybe why they just don't win Playoff games.

I do not trust Farmer at all when it comes to judging ones character for several very obvious reasons. I don't trust Farmer at all when it comes to anything. He has already failed. You can't miss on number 1 picks. The jury is still out, but it's looking bleak. P.S. Texting to the sidelines and losing draft picks don't help your stock if you are a GM either. (even if "Jimmy" tells you to)

Im not even getting my hopes up for Cooper or White bc there is a slim to none chance of them falling to us.
With that being said, I would be stoked if we landed Parker. Dude is a monster!
I also like Devin Smith, if was there around the 3rd round.. and I'd also take a gamble on Green-Beckham if he was there in the 4th/5th round. I think his ceiling outweighs the risk of failure at that point.

I have a question. Beckham - what happened that he was suspended for a year.
I know we have the Gordon experience - but that kid is Good! Is it all the same? One bad All bad. I'm a sucker for trying to rebuild fallen youth. If not drugs and just stupidity where he's been clean for a year in that stupid department? Also if not drugs he doesn't come in with a Strike against him.

jmh? He wasn't suspended for a year. He transferred so he had to sit out a year. However, he was kicked off of Mizzou's football team after getting caught with a pound of weed. He also was caught with a little bit over an oz of weed his Freshman year. He is literally Josh Gordon 2.0 That said, 4th round. Sign me up.

Thanks - Risk reward thing, with our Gordon history real tough call. I was thinking we would have to use that 2nd probably all depends how fast the WRs go. Of course some draftnicks have him going #32.
WRs and weed seem to go together for some reason.

I do not get this Bleak stuff??? jmho I don't get the total failure/doom and gloom stuff either but let's be honest, when you are a 5 win team with 2 first round picks and neither of them see the field much or make much of a contribution, the short returns are that it wasn't a good draft. I get that we added Kirksey and Bitonio and other valuable contributors from the draft and even some from UDFA.. but when you do that well later in the draft, those are the drafts that change the direction of a franchise if you hit on a stud in the first round... and while there is still a chance, neither has impressed anybody yet either on or off the field. It's just a little disheartening to think that with all of those guys you listed, we also could have added Kyle Fuller and Kelvin Benjamin instead of Gilbert and Manziel.. and that's just off the top of my head. Then how does the draft look?

The problem is and has always been most of our 1st rd picks don't make it. This is where we have to improve. we have another golden opportunity in this draft. Let's make the most of it this time.

Now, he had higher chances of success by having 2 picks in the 1st. Lest we forget, Gilbert was at the time called a good pick because he was considered by many the best cover corner in the draft. At the time, it was the Manziel pick that was risk versus reward.

I do not get this Bleak stuff??? jmho It seems those with this opinion way the success of a GM on whether or not the 1st round selections pan out. Never-mind the talent acquisition through later rounds and FA or how many starting calibre guys they bring in. People need to understand from a talent perspective, Farmer improved this team last year and did a decent job. Gilbert could very well turn into the starter he is expected to be; last I heard it took a CB 2-3 years to transition to the NFL. Regardless it Manziel is a bust or not, 2014 would be considered a good year. (I'm going to take heat for this but whatever) And lets face it, with Manziel, Farmer gave the Browns ownership and the fanbase what they wanted....hype and media attention. Otherwise they would have drafted the QB that came from a pro style system (Bridgewater). Even so, if you question Farmer's ability, please look at the above list. At this point it is what it is. Our only glaring need is players to stop the run, WR, QB, and OL depth. I'm confident we will go into next year a better team.

It seems those with this opinion way the success of a GM on whether or not the 1st round selections pan out. Never-mind the talent acquisition through later rounds and FA or how many starting calibre guys they bring in. This post isn't all about Farmer but a GM should be graded based on whether or not he makes the team better (and by how much)... with that said, finding a solid guy in the 5th or 6th round who can contribute is never going to cancel out picking a bust in the top 10 (or even in the first round)... Finding "starting calibre" guys in the later rounds and FA is great, but nobody expects them to be the cornerstone of your team, those guys come in the first round, the top 10.. Guys like Thomas and Haden... Sometimes you get lucky and find one somewhere else, but you can't count on it. Hypothetically, if we are a 10 or 11 win team in the next couple years, maybe getting into the playoffs, maybe not.. people (and fans) aren't going to be applauding the Browns draft picks of Kirksey and such as the reason why we are good... they are going to be lamenting names like Gilbert, Manziel, Mingo, Taylor, Richardson, Weeden... as reasons why we aren't GREAT. Because those are the guys that should be studs at that point... maybe some still will be, I don't know. That's 6 first round picks, 3 top ten picks, over the last 4 years and we are getting virtually ZERO production from that. It's hard to build a team that way... I'm not down on Farmer, I'm more than willing to give him another couple years to get it figured out, but our first round draft picks need to improve... we NEED impact players from there.

I get the missing on the first rounders (2) even though they still can turn out positive. But I get it.
Got to be Honest. Not many teams hit on a Gabriel or William or Crowell in UDFA - In any post on this subject I always talk and add the first rounders....sure I still have that door open not closed only cause for the fact it is still open. When the fat lady sings I'll close that door.
How many on the other spectrum...include all. Almost none. ONe says the UDFA don't count - smh.
Most others only talk about the first rounders
If Farmer consistently misses on first rounders - hey we then could have doomed our future. But yes this time there was not a positive reinforcement on those two picks but he did some butt kicking anyways if you look at the big picture. Can he do that every year, I doubt it.

However that is kind of my point, we are happy that they are contributors, hit on those same positions in the first round over the last few years and we could, without a whole lot of effort, have AJ Green, Kyle Fuller, and Eddie Lacy... then are we still excited about Gabriel, Williams and Crowell? Are we then dependent on UDFAs to contribute just to get us to .500? If Farmer consistently misses on first rounders - hey we then could have doomed our future. But yes this time there was not a positive reinforcement on those two picks but he did some butt kicking anyways if you look at the big picture. Can he do that every year, I doubt it. I think we are in agreement about the whole topic. Thanks eo.

I think too many look at it as Manziel, Gilbert, Mingo, Weeden and Trent.
But Farmer cannot be to blame on those 2012 n 2013 drafts.
As you said we agree if he doesn't hit present n future on those ones (probably at least one from 2014 will come around) he should be chastised but not for Banner/Lombardi or Heckerts drafts.

I don't think anyone blames Farmer with the previous drafts. Bottomline, he not whiffed on two first round picks. He not only whiffed, he swung and missed while the ball was hitting him in the face. We got no contributions from both guys, while guys who were picked after them at positions of obvious need thrived.
One thing I do credit Farmer with is the trade down with the Bills. That move was brilliant.
If only Farmer had taken Beckham with that first pick. If he did, we wouldn't be having this conversation. He could have taken Beckham and Manziel and people would have understood the Manziel risk.
You cannot whiff on two first round picks.
