I really liked the Hartline signing. I like what players have said about Pettine in their visits.
I still say he's a Super Star in the making.
Continuity is going to be key. I know the O is changing but not by that much. Looking forward to our starting 5 on the OL. Gipson back also.
I don't expect more than 1 or two FA to sign that will mean anything. The rest will be bottom of the barrel stuff.
Got to keep building through the draft. We added Bitonio, West, Crowell, Kirksey, DeSir, Williams, Gabriel last year. We got two first rounders who seem to be getting their head together. We had a D gelling and coming back - it will all come down to Manziel progressing or not.
And we just are in the official FA period for a couple of hours now.
jmho 7-9 best start of a new Regime. Best record since 2007. Yeah I'm moping about how sorry we are. We have no hope! lol 7-9 while playing against the worst division in football(NFC South). We don't play them this year. We also don't have Shanahan this year. We have a rookie OC who has NEVER called plays in the NFL. Oh, and we have McCown, a QB that has lost twice as many games as he's won. And we still have 6 months before the season starts. As we do every year at this point. And if we sit on our hands and do nothing, we will get pounded this season. As it stands right now I don't believe this team can win 6 games. 5-11 would be doing great "as is" with our upcoming schedule. We don't have a quarterback. And our schedule is much tougher. So Farmer HAS to increase our talent level if we are to match 7-9 from last year. That means drafting two players in the first that actually PLAY on the field. Something he seemingly has trouble with. As both of our firsts last year played very little and didn't impress when they did. It means spending some of this cap space to improve the team. By RULE teams HAVE to spend 89% of the cap. Or they get penalized. Get busy and get some damned talent for this team!

Wait! Did someone say he signed for 4 years and $25 million w/only $13 million guaranteed?
I realize that those are ridiculous amounts of money for teachers like me who don't have IMPORTANT jobs, but man.........why wouldn't we offer him more than that?
And if we did, what does that say about this FO?
Yep, everything is positive.

Yep, everything is positive. I agree. Seems like something we could have done. I like Buster and the hometown connection, but maybe our staff sees better out of a couple of the younger guys? Half the chance to success is being given the chance to play. Being given the ball is the biggest part of becoming the closer in baseball v the set-up man. I am sure many set-up pitchers could close enough games if given the opportunity.

I didn't realize there was a hometown connection and besides.........I could care less about that crap. Just produce for the team that is paying you.
I hear what you are saying peen, but there is another way to look at it. Perhaps this particular GM is stubborn and arrogant, and he will do all he can to prove that his draft picks succeed.
Is that out of the blue?
I think not. Come on, man..........you used to be so much more open minded.

I don't rule that out at this point. I am just not ready to pick a side at this point.
He's made some good decisions with low level picks to this point. Maybe those were just lucky and maybe his 1st round picks were unlucky.
I guess what I am saying is I can't name any GMs who made a habit of blowing top round picks but hitting on low level picks.

That's fair. I was just strolling down memory lane and thinking about how you and I used to take a beating about our opinions on Couch.
Man, that was brutal. LOL......
But, we never wavered.

Well it looks like we are placing all bets on Gilbert stepping up? I hope we are not going to overpay Revis.

From what some reports were, we never really gave him a competitive offer because we want to "ride it out" with Gilbert....good grief. One step forward five steps back.

You know...........I really, really, really want to make some positive posts, like I did w/the Hartline signing, bringing Cole in, Farmer admitting he was wrong, Pettine doing a great job of handling the dysfunction in the FO this year, etc
I want to do that not only to be fair, but to make a point of just how freaking stupid the Regime Wars thing has gotten. It's a freaking monster that devours all signs of sensibility and reason.
But man, not too many good things are happening. Most guys, except for Ohio native Hartline, are signing elsewhere. We lose a very cb and are going to roll w/a guy who would rather sleep in than study. We part ties w/the qb the team preferred and sign a guy who went 1 and 10 last year w/a terrible TD/Int ratio and are looking to start a guy who is in rehab!
This all sounds more fictional than a movie script. People wouldn't believe it.
Unfortunately, it's not a movie. It's the Browns.

Skrine is a league average starter with room to grow. He is far from a stud. With that said, I would have loved to have him back at the price he got from the Jets. I understand why we didn't re-sign him, I just don't agree with it. Many of the very smart teams sit out the first day barrage. We could be doing the same.

I also agree it was a decent contract, and wondering why we didn't offer him too.
My only thoughts besides what has been said, i.e. getting younger players, different plan, etc
(Yes it's the first day of official free agency so it's very speculative)
Just to throw another one out there of possibilities , maybe has to do with the article from a day or two ago. Letting some guys go for compensation picks. We've re-signed a couple minor guys and our two key pickups so far are two guys that have been cut from their teams: McCown and Hartline.
For that price tag, it's either the FO didn't think much of him or they wanted to let the younger guys grow and add to the compensation list.
It's still early, a lot more still to transpire.

I've defended Farmer for his draft last year and the UDFAs he was able to bring in; but, if he is willing to put his job on the line standing behind his underachieving draft selections and not retain guys that prove they can play, he can pack his bags!

But man, not too many good things are happening. Most guys, except for Ohio native FWIW, it doesn't appear to be for lack of trying on the Browns part... In every game this season, the Browns will have a disadvantage at the following
1. QB 2. GM 3. culture
how is this front office going to sell the great "Josh McCown to Brian Hartline" connection this season? Just because this franchise went 7-9 in 2014 is no guarentee it will improve on its win total in 2015. Who are the game changers in the front 7? How is McCown gonna fare against the AFC North? what current WR will force a secondary to give bracket coverage.?

Yes, that was my point. The dysfunction of the FO and history of losing makes Cleveland an undesirable location.

Additionally, we lost a very OC w/an unproven guy who has never called plays before. We also lost a qb coach who was respected in the NFL for a guy who has never coached in the NFL before.

If Lane is right (and he is usually money), it confirms my worst fear.....Haslem is the problem and is in Mike Brown company. If it was just Farmer you can fire him and start over, but the owner isn't going anywhere.
I hope this isn't true, but if it is we are severely handicapped. Really hope that was LA venting on that tweet.

Yep, everything is positive. Yeah, I don't get it either Vers. We HAVE to spend 89% of the cap. By rule. Why not spend it on a corner that has played well for us? I'm under no delusion that he is a great player. But he was solid and dependable. Better than anyone else on the team other than Haden. And in THIS defense corner is everything. So unless they plan on spending another first on a corner to bookend with Haden, or have a plan to sign a better player in FA(at a much higher cost), then I really don't get letting him go....

We may bring in a FA or a 3rd day draft pick but Gilbert is going to get his shot along with Desir ... Gilbert I understand, he's a first round pick, but I wouldn't put a lot of faith in Desir..

I hope this isn't true, but if it is we are severely handicapped. Really hope that was LA venting on that tweet. I know as Browns fans we have it rough - but to look at the worst possible reason for everything that happens is depressingly crazy. We absolutely don't know that and I don't even think it.... with the exodus of FA's - there would be a lot of "rumblings" going on from the players leaving if this were the true. Until I hear it from a player - I'll continue to think this sort of talk is down to a paranoid, down trodden fan base. Skrine left and chose a different team. Sure I wanted him but it does not single handedly mean the team is in free fall.
The more things change the more they stay the same.

Try what you wish to pull me down in your misery. Yada yada record so we shouldn't count 2010 either. We beat some good teams - Shanny? we lost 6 out of our last 7 you act like losing Shanny is this OH NO factor...if we had him you would be complaining we had him. Rookie OC - If he's good who cares. I got no proof he will be good you got no proof he won't be.
Cry all you want. Just don't make it out like its the truth. Hey I get it, fine some dawgs wish to complain. I am the first to say Winning is the cure all.
Right now I am banking on my assessment of who Manziel could be and that he will get his act together. Our situation is a lot better than all the Browns suck media. Him HIM! ....HIM
Defense wins championships. Watson play your butt off! Go Browns! CHRIST HAS RISEN! GM Strong! & Stay safe everyone!
