Starks was cut by Miami (along with several others) to make space for their offseason moves. He was probably their best DT last couple years (according to my co-worked who is a big Miami fan.) I wonder if they are going to try him at nose, and if not, who on the end they are looking to replace.

I just read via NFL.com that Starks was one of the top DT's still available in free agency. He fills a need on the defensive line, that's for sure. My guess is they try him as a DE. I'm still banking on us taking Danny Shelton at #12 if he's available.

Good sign though by Farmer.

Those compensatory picks next year are looking good! ha ha.

Starks was very good in 2013, but then fell off last year. This is a very low risk signing. He is 31 years old.

This kills any chance that Rubin had at coming back.

My guess is that he plays all along the line.

We still need a true nose tackle for run downs.

Without knowing much about him, is Starks comparable to Rubin/Taylor?

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."

I would say he is a hybrid of the two, but probably not much better than either. Starks has played all the line positions in the 3-4 throughout his career.

Good signing. He can still be a solid contributor this year, and the contract isn't a killer if he doesn't play well.

This is a good depth signing.

I don't know how much he has left, but hopefully he can be a solid rotational guy.

This was my initial reaction when I heard the news. If he can help plug up the run, then welcome aboard!! If not, least the contract wasn't a bank breaker.

Pretty good competition signing for the price. With how badly Rubin graded out last year this is an upgrade with a much better contract. Should be said that I think in our system he's more of a DE. Starks, Taylor, Winn and Armonty should have a wide open competion.

This likely means Kitchen doesn't survive cuts if we draft a DL at all.

I don't know about that. Kitchen played really well last year when he got a chance. I seem to recall Pettine singling him out several times late in the season.

High potential reward, low risk signing. Replaces Rubin who has fallen off in a big way. So I'm good with it.

As Town mentioned, he probably isn't a starter at this point, but I think that is of little significance. We rotate DL quite a bit in Pettine's scheme, and Starks will get playing time. He isn't the run stopper he once was, but if you limit his plays to 10-15 a game I believe he can be effective. The problem the Dolphins had was that his contract was too large to warrant the type of production he gave them.

Again, I think he can be a solid contributor......hopefully backing up Shelton tongue

PFT is saying $4 mil PER year... not total. I'd say thats more starter money.

He played in a 4-3 in Miami. Will be interesting to see how he does in a 3-4. I'm guessing he'd play end here?

Guess his bread and butter is rushing, not plugging up run lanes. So he'll be a DE in our 3-4. Little info about him:

Cleveland Browns added a veteran passrusher to boost their defensive line.

NFL Now delivers a non-stop video stream highlighting the next generation of NFL talent in preparation for the 2015 NFL Draft. Start using it now!

Randy Starks will sign a two-year contract in Cleveland worth roughly $8 million, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reports.

Starks brings versatility to the Browns, playing defensive tackle the past several seasons and could fit in at defensive end in Cleveland's 3-4 front.

The durable 31-year-old missed just one game in seven seasons in Miami. He was cut this offseason as a cap casualty in the Dolphins' successful quest to land Ndamukong Suh.

Starks will aid the Browns' pass rush as a rotational player. He compiled 30.5 sacks in his time in Miami.

The addition won't address Cleveland's 32nd-ranked run defense in 2014, but it will boost a defensive front that struggled to pressure the quarterback last season (ranking just 27th in sacks).

While I agree there's no way we keep everyone. Starks makes 7. A draftee makes 8. 6 is the usual. 7 was likely with our depth. 8 is highly unlikely. Do you think someone is more likely cut than Kitchen? Maybe the loser of Taylor vs. Winn is traded while the other is extended? Thoughts...

I've read conflicting reports about the money. The guys on OBR say that although the 4 million looks huge it is window dressing......base is about half that. SO if they are right then technically both reports are correct...lol.

If Starks is the answer to play 25-35 snaps we are in trouble, but if he is a rotational guy then he is a nice piece.

Pet likes to rotate all his DL and keep them fresh, so as you pointed out adds a nice part to the rotation.

Multiple sites have him at 305lbs. Seems a little light for a NT, either at 0 or 1 tech.

Farmer's hitting the bargain bin today!

Here's hoping Starks has enough to left to contribute to the rotation.

Could this be a sign we are trying to trade Taylor?

Possibly but I doubt it. I think Pettine like a heavy d-line rotation and this replace Rubin-- not necessarily in terms of position, but overall depth.

If we were going to trade Taylor we would have done before his salary became guaranteed.

Taylor, Bryant, and Starks is a pretty good set of big guys who can get after the QB (when healthy).

Exactly what I have been saying. I know some got fidigity when we didn't sign many out of the gate, but the gate is still open and there are still solid players to be had and a good price.

Starks is a solid player. He is going to get his 20 snaps a game along with several others who are going to get their 20 snaps.

The way I see it, this guy improves our team. We are now pretty deep at DL and one would expect we will draft at least one more. Lot's of quality along the line. It may even give us a chance at trading somebody somewhere down the road.

I said the same thing last year.

I'm glad we didn't trade anyone with the injuries to Bryant, Bryant, Hughes, and Taylor.

I understand. Pettine likes to have players along the defensive front. I am not really advocating trading anybody, but when you start looking at the players and the potential of another player being drafted, how many can you keep?

One poster said 6. I might disagree with that. We could keep 7 players with the way we like to rotate the big guys so they can catch their breath and factoring in the injury factor.. I don't know....8 is starting to stretch it a bit. At that point you are going to be cutting another position thin, but I supposed it depends on what position we cut thin? Do we need to keep 3 tight ends? You can usually find a decent player if someone goes down. Do we need to keep a fullback? There will be a million differnt answers to those questions and there is probably no "right" answer

Last year we had Taylor, Bryant, Bryant, Hughes, Winn, Kitchen, and Rubin to start the season. Right now we have Taylor, Bryant, Bryant, Hughes, Winn, Kitchen, and Starks (along with some others who are not meaningful with regards to this discussion). Of our current seven I would think that Winn is the most tradeable, but even then I don't think we can get the value back in draft picks that Winn would put out on the field.

I think we only add another defensive linemen if that player is going to be a major contributor (Shelton?). And even then I don't think Shelton can play during passing downs, so are we really going to draft a guy who plays a third of the snaps with the 12th pick?

I am glad you were honest and added that. I was about to slap myself in the head and say I somehow missed his name. LOL

So now, add in a Danny Shelton and what happens?

Shoot, maybe we won't draft a DL player early, or at all. I do find that hard to believe.

If we sign Dwayne Bowe I see Farmer being aggressive for the LB core & adding weapons. I feel the d-line is set (feel free to disagree). I think Farmer wants playmaker for offense and defense.

I could see that. I even said something similar that maybe we don't draft a D linerman, at least early.

Nobody knows. That's what makes it fun to speculate.

We seem to be getting better at the LB position, but since our return our backers have had a bad habit of sustaining grass stains on their ass.
