I don't understand how Bradford, with his injury history and contract situation, is worth more than Foles. It literally makes no sense to me.

Me as well. Not to sound mean but he tore the same ACL back to back seasons. I'm not a doctor, but I'm sure the repair process and etc weakens the ligament and knee, etc.

Would he even be the same? Would he be okay if he takes a small hit or puts that repaired knee in an awkward angle? People are talking two first round picks for someone with these heavy question marks, it's crazy to me. I'd take Foles without blinking an eye.

I don't think this is true. From what I read Farmer is keeping both firsts. From the start, this FO has said they were building through the draft. The only way this makes sense is if Farmer thinks he is gone if 2015 is not a winning year. Otherwise it makes no sense to get SB, only to see him go elsewhere after 2015 and if we tag him, then he retires. It really makes no sense whatsoever to give up that much when chances are SB is gone in 2016. Otherthan like I said, If Farmer thinks he's done if he can't win right away, then it starts to make sense. JMO

I don't really believe for a second that we've called the Eagles and offered Johnny Manziel and the #19 overall pick for Sam Bradford. Not necessarily because Manziel holds more value, but because it sounds like a made up Madden type scenario. I've yet to read it from any kind of credible source. If the Eagles would trade us Sam Bradford for the #19 overall pick and Johnny Manziel I would take that trade in a heart beat.

Sam Bradford is an injury risk, I 110% agree, but Johnny Manziel is just as much of a risk due to his off-the-field personal life and rehab issues. I'm rooting for him to get clean, but he seriously looked like a chicken without a head last year against Cincinnati and Carolina, he has a massive up-hill climb to make if he gets out of rehab with a clean slate.

Sam Bradford never played poorly in St. Louis, he just got injured a little too often. In his defense, the Rams had absolutely terrible wide-receivers and a piss-poor offensive line. I think it's incredibly possible that if he's put into a good situation (believe it or not Cleveland IS a good situation) he could continue to develop and grow into a very good NFL quarterback.

Bleacher Report sent me an update this morning stating the Browns are interested in trading the #12 and #19 pick to move up for Mariota. I really hope that's not true. We already have two spread-option style project QB's, Shaw & Manziel. Do we seriously need a third?

When this is all it takes for your QB to tear his ACL for the second time, red flags and caution flares should be going off.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Finally someone posts logic instead of all this doom and gloom. It'll be a little iffy Farmer pulling off both trades. This years first round talent is nothing special maybe an upgrade over 2013. Farmer can still add quality depth and receiver. Overall next year looks better. If JF does show something, it puts Browns ahead of the game.

My big fear with playing the "wait and see" game this year and moving all of our draft picks and assets into next year is free agency. Next year, Phil Taylor, Craig Robertson, Tashaun Gipson, Mitchell Schwartz, Billy Winn, Ishmaa'ily Kitchen, Johnson Bademosi, Gary Barnidge, Travis Benjamin and a couple others are all UFA with Alex Mack having his opt out clause... If we go 4-12, how many of them are going to walk rather than wait for host of new draft picks to come in and make us good?

Most of those aren't really game-breaker type players but they are solid contributors and I'd rather not lose most of them and create even more holes for us to have to fill.

pit...it does not take a high football IQ to realize that Bradford's chances of playing 16 games in 2015 are zero.

Just something in his genetics that makes Bradford "so fragile"...

Exactly, how even more so weaker is that same acl/knee now after two injuries? People were even serious about Bradford and retirement. I don't get why we are so interested and why we are so willing to dish out lot for someone like that?

Actually doesn't undo the injury but its not like he just moved - thanks for the video. Clearly it shows something happened when Monty Bryant was hanging on bradshaw...it already happened when Bryant let him go and he hopped on one leg and went down. Trying to stay up with a guys weight on you and the surgical knee gave way. Too much too soon.

As for surgery and then surgery on the same knee. Well fixing it is fixing it. I don't think one has to do with the other. Then again only my kids refer to me as Doctor Daddy (well I can guess them days will be replaced someday soon by Dr. Grandaddy I hope wink )

I just believe that if you look at both of his ACL injuries, it paints a clear picture that in the case of Bradford, it certainly takes very little for that knee to give out. One ACL is a hint. Two on the same knee? I see that as a clear sign.

There have been players who came back from multiple tears to go on and have good careers though. So far RG3 isn't one of them.

--It is pretty amazing that quite a few of us actually agree that the rumors don's seem to make a lot of sense. I still don't get it, but that doesn't mean it won't happen. I think cfrs explained things pretty well, at least from how I am looking at it. Again, I could be missing something.

--tab, I am not bad-mouthing the Browns for these rumors. I don't think the national media is either. I don't bash the Browns just to bash them. They have to earn the disdain, and I know you won't like this, but it is my opinion that they earned criticism by some of the stupid, short-sighted, and arrogant moves they made recently.

--Bradford's injury history? Hmmmmm......I hate saying that he will be injured again just because he has been injured int he past, but man, it sure would make me wonder about offering up that much compensation for him. Personally, I would not make that move. Sorry.

--There is no way in the world would I trade the 12th and 19th pick for Mariotta. Heck, I would NOT take him w/the 12th pick if he were available. I would not even take him w/the 19th pick if he were available. He won't be, but I still would not take him in that slot.

--Look, no one wants to hear it, but we blew last year's draft. We had a chance and we blew it. Now, we have to pay the consequences. I almost beginning to think that our best shots are that Johnny either booms and is our guy or he fails so badly that we end up w/the first overall pick.

**Thread about Basket weaving**

Hey guys, what's the best technique?

Vers: Look you might have good basket weaving skills, but the FO totally messed up the draft in 2014.

Agree 100%

I think he is just the flavor of the day. The way he played against the Buckeyes was all I needed to see. He may be a great person, but I don't think he can read defenses. We need a guy who is capable of that now, not two years down the road, I think we have one of those right now.

Yeah, I agree.

And did you hear the stat they gave during the OSU game about Mariotta's completion percentage in the red zone compared to the other 80 yds. of the field? It was amazing how different the numbers were.

I attribute that to him actually having to read coverages better in the red zone because the defense is not so "spread" out. Making reads is not his strength.

I do like the kid as a person and I actually hopes he makes it big time. I have been wrong about QBs before and I will be again, but I think this kid has some real issues in regards to reading coverages after the snap.

When they took the quick strike ability away from Oregon, it forced him out of his comfort zone. Now he was not in control. Oregon usually was dictating the flow of the game, the Buckeyes took that away, and he had to actually read what was happening. I think the end result was pretty clear.

Marcus Mariota on if Browns trade up for him: 'That would be an awesome opportunity, I'd love to play for the Browns'

INDIANAPOLIS -- Breaking up is hard to do, but maybe this will be just a temporary split for Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota.

During his NFL combine podium interview, he made reference to "Kevin O'Connell, my quarterback coach.''

Maybe it hasn't sunk in yet for Mariota that O'Connell was hired by the Browns Tuesday to coach their quarterbacks and that he's no longer preparing Mariota for the draft.

Or maybe Mariota knows something that we don't.

The Browns will explore the possibility of trading up for Mariota in the draft, and he admitted Thursday he'd love to be reunited with O'Connell, who's been working with him for the past month or so at Prolific Athletes in San Diego in anticipation of the combine.

"All the situations, you kind of play in your head,'' said Mariota. "It's totally out of our control. We won't know until draft day. That would an awesome opportunity. I'd love to play for the Browns. For right now, you can't really control those things, so I try not to worry about them.''

Browns general manager Ray Farmer, who's had his eye on Mariota since last year when he decided not to come out of Oregon, admitted that a trade up for the dual-threat QB will be contemplated, along with every other chance to upgrade the quarterback position.

"All options are on the table for the Browns,'' Farmer said. "There's nothing that we don't look at. There's no circumstances that we haven't tried to put together a framework for what's the right thing to do and what those costs are. We've done a cost-benefit analysis as to what it's going to take to make any sort of move in free agency or the draft.''

So the fact that he took Manziel at No. 22 last year wouldn't preclude him from packaging No. 12 and No. 19 and zooming up the board to land Mariota, one of the top two quarterbacks in the draft along with Florida State's Jameis Winston?

"I don't think anything's hard to do,'' Farmer said. "Really the sole purpose is to try to win football games and add the right pieces to the puzzle.''

It was clear during Mariota's 12-minute interview that he's not over O'Connell yet: he mentioned him at least half a dozen times and spoke of him in glowing terms.
"He really helped me adjust to the pro game,'' said the spread quarterback. "I was very blessed to have him as my quarterbacks coach.''

Mariota cited all the things O'Connell has done to help him turn pro, including barking out complicated plays. He didn't specify where the plays came from, but coach Mike Pettine stressed Wednesday that O'Connell doesn't know the Browns' offense yet.

"He's given me a play sheet and at night he tells me to read the play calls out loud,'' said Mariota, who hasn't called plays since high school. "That's something little, but as this process goes, it's going to help me with whatever team I get to in terms of just speaking in the huddle and articulating the plays.''

O'Connell also has him huddling, which he didn't do with the fast-paced Ducks.

"It seems like a little detail, but that is kind of a big thing,'' he said. "There's other things as well. Three-, five-, seven-step drops under center. That's all stuff I've been able to work on the last month.''

Pettine insisted that O'Connell's work with Mariota wouldn't help the Browns much in their evaluation of the scrambler. At least three NFL personnel executives and one coach were dismayed that the Browns got the inside track to Mariota through O'Connell, who's hiring became known last month.

"I know some reports are out there that he was doing playbook stuff with him,'' said Pettine. "Kevin doesn't even know our offense yet. There was a situation where we felt we were doing the right thing, interviewed him, offered him the job and he said, 'I gave some young men my word that I would work with them for the combine and he wanted to honor that commitment.' It's a very important time of their life and they trusted him with that responsibility.

"Anybody who knows Kevin knows he's that kind of guy. So I didn't look at it in any way as we're gaining some advantage because he's doing some drill work and some classroom work with these quarterbacks. I just looked at it as, 'Here's a guy with integrity who wants to fulfill a commitment he made.' We were more than willing to sit back and wait until the time was right to bring him on board.''

Knowing he'd soon be leaving Mariota, O'Connell, a former third-round pick of the Patriots, brought in Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers to work with him on pocket presence, footwork and the like.

"It will be an adjustment I'll be able to handle,'' he said. "It's something I'm going to continue to work on with Philip and different other quarterback coaches right now because Kevin's with the Browns. Learning as much as I can, learning how my drops time up with the route concepts and how my feet are going to help me go through my progressions. All this stuff is little things that I can continue to work on that will help my adjustment.''

Proving the folks wrong who thinks he's only a product of his system isn't what drives him though.

"I guess you could say it's a little bit of motivation, but it's not the reason why I'm doing it,'' he said. "There's a purpose of why I'm here and why I'm standing in front of you and that's because I love the game, I want to be part of this game, I want to be part of this game for a long time. My motivation isn't to prove anybody wrong. My motivation is to make a dream come true for me.''

If the Browns do still want him as much as they supposedly did last year, it might not be easy to get him. The Bucs haven't ruled him out at No. 1, and the Titans could take him at No. 2. If he slips to No. 6, the Jets might snatch him up.

What's more, they'll likely have competition from Eagles coach Chip Kelly, who coached Mariota at Oregon and might try to climb up from No. 20. The Browns obviously have more ammunition with the two first-round picks, but Mariota acknowledged he'd also enjoy playing for Kelly again.

"Yeah, why not?,'' he said. "That would be a fun opportunity. But again, this process is out of our control and we'll see what happens.''

Like most top-rated quarterbacks, Mariota feels he's the best in the draft, ahead of Winston, who's likely to go No. 1 overall to the Bucs.

"As a competitor, any person would tell you that they're the best,'' he said. "I truly believe that in myself. We'll see whatever decision is made. I've got to go in with that mentality.''

Question is, does O'Connell agree after spending more than a month with Mariota, and will he push for a reunion between the two?

My preference is to play out the prospects of Manziel. Now if we can do that in 2015 and get Bradford without giving up Manziel just one of our two picks I would say we are covering our bases nicely.

Manziel starts...Bradford heals more...possibly if Manziel is awful later in the season and Bradford is more sound than he would be in the beginning of the season and he wouldn't be asked to play 16 games...that could happen.

For me that is best case scenario cause we get to make sure about Manziel...we don't rush Bradford out there. If we get a similar situation as last year where our Starter starts to break down and isn't who we thought they were.....we would have a healthy Bradford coming in to finish the season not a rookie who is not ready for prime time.

jmho but I'm ok if 12 rolls around and we get Eagles #20 plus a first rounder for next year for moving back! I'm not sold on Mariota.

Sadly
I have little faith in this front office to create a plan that makes sense and see it through to fruition. Without average QB play I don't see us winning more than six games a year. I pray I'm wrong.

Report: Bears met with Marcus Mariota

Posted by Josh Alper on April 10, 2015, 2:22 PM EDT
link
Most of the speculation at quarterback for the Bears this offseason has revolved around whether they’ll stick with Jay Cutler as their starter, something that appears to be the likeliest way for things to go as long as Jimmy Clausen is their alternative.

The draft could bring another option into the mix and the team is reportedly doing their homework on one of the top prospects in this year’s class. During an appearance on ESPN 1000 in Chicago, Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota visited the Bears a little more than a week ago.

The Bears currently hold the seventh overall selection in the first round, which might be too low to have a shot at picking Mariota come April 30. A trade would carry a steep price for a team with a lot of needs to fill around the roster, although it could be a more realistic possibility if the Bears can deal a player rather than simply a collection of draft picks.

Cutler would likely be near the top of the list of pieces they’d dangle in exchange for a chance to grab Mariota, but previous attempts to dangle him as trade bait haven’t created much interest around the league in getting a deal done. Perhaps that changes once teams get closer to the start of the draft, but Cutler’s salary and recent history make acquiring him a tough sell for teams that have a shot at picking Mariota.

Bears at #7 need help to move up to get one of the top QBs...would they trade Cutler to the Browns for one of our first round picks?

I would be very upset if we did that. Cutler's contract is horrible. There were talks earlier in the off-season of the Bears giving up compensation so that somebody would take Cutler's contract.

I would be in favor of having Cutler as our QB in 2015, but I think that ship has sailed.

Just because Cutler can stay on the field, I'd choose him over Bradford for that sole reason alone. I'd pass on both though. Cutler is a locker room toxic, coach killer, poor attitude and it's been that way for a long time. I really thought Bears would bite the bullet and have moved on. Maybe they will come draft day, just hope the Cutler saga doesn't continue here.

Jay Cutler is a bum.

Poor attitude, injury history, turnover machine, inaccurate, overrated.

He couldn't get anything done with Marshall, Jefferey and Forte as his skill players, how will he do anything here?

In fifteen games Cutler completed 66% of his passes, had 3,812 yards, 28 TDs, 18 INTs, and a QB rating of 88.6 The Bears went 5-11, but their defense was among the worst in the league by every measure.

This is all a moot point, Cutler's contract became full guaranteed for the 2015 on March 12th.

I can see Mariota in a Bears uniform. Maybe give Cutler a season, maybe less, than turn the reins over to the rookie. What I don't hope is we trade the farm for Mariota or trade down as usual. We have way to many holes on offense.

Cutler.. Handsdown.. Not my cup of tea, but better than what we have now. (or so it currently appears)

Even if he is all you say he is,(I disagree with you 99%) he would still be the best QB this joke of a franchise EVER had.

Of course you mean since 1999 right?

kelso...I do agree that Cutler's attitude might need some adjusting. If the Browns made a deal, Cutler might benefit from the change...

Cutler's 2014 numbers posted by cfrs do not add up to Cutler being A BUM..

"In fifteen games Cutler completed 66% of his passes, had 3,812 yards, 28 TDs, 18 INTs, and a QB rating of 88.6 "

Concerning Marshall (721yds/8tds), Jefferey (1133yds/10tds) and Forte (808yds/4tds)..also, TE Bennett (916yds/6tds).

I would say that Cutler got some things done.

BUT, Cutler's contract...that very well could kill a deal if Cutler and his agent were not willing to renegotiate.

Hopefully, all this Mariotta talk is BS and the Browns are trying to deceive other teams.

Just look at what he said in those comments. He doesn't really know how to huddle. He doesn't really know the different drops. He hasn't made play call since freaking high school.

Are you kidding me?

And we wanna trade up for this guy?

No, we can't be that dumb! Can we?

Oh wait, we are supposed to ignore that the Farmer passed on Teddy for Johnny, who had many of the very same issues that Mariotta does.

I will freak if we make that move!!!

This is exactly why I don't want him. No matter what he did in college, he is a project

Hopefully it is just a smokescreen and we are not really interested. Someone posted that last year we did not draft any of the guys we worked out. I don't know if that is true, but it gives me hope.
