I agree with your first point and that our play calling wasn't very good (particularly towards the end of the season.)
I don't think they knew what was coming. I think Shanahan called plays that required more time to develop than the middle of our line could protect. I think the outside zone would have forced more scrape technique than penetration and given us more time when we'd later try playaction. I have absolutely no idea why we seemed to go away from it.

If the other team didn't know what was coming, how did they know to keep their base defense on the field for 88% of our running plays?

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it." No. It was because we usually had personnel on the field that would indicate that we were running the ball (i.e. two tight ends, one tight/one fullback, etc.).

I agree that Crowell seemed to often run as though expecting contact before it got there and that led to falling down. He really does need to learn to run with power and not just explosiveness.
Having said that, he showed really well last year and if that's his biggest issue I think it will be easily fixed.
West I wasn't as impressed with, I think he needs to be more decisive at the line but between the two of them they're more than servicable and with good line-play we should be in for a fun season.

OMG! You argue like you actually know what you are saying and then keep hammering it over and over. How the heck do you explain how we had more wide open WRs than we have EVER had during a season? How do you explain some of the gashing holes we had last year? Because we were predictable? Sheesh..........we had two rookie RBs, crappy QBs, terrible WRs, a good TE who hardly played and two no-name TEs that never did nothing before.............and you expected dominance? Incredible! I would let it go, but you act all smug, as if you are a superior intellect in regards to understanding play design and play calling.

I guess I see it just a little differently. Early in the year Tate was taking away carries from both backs. With only 148 carries, the Crow amassed 8td's. With Tate gone, it only stands to reason that getting 10td's with more carries looks pretty reachable. He also averaged 4.1 yards per carry. With that type of average, the deciding factors to a 1000 yard season is how many times he's called on to carry the rock.
So if he simply "continues" what he's been doing, his goals look pretty reasonable to me. I think we're not on the same page. I responded to it as a collective effort with both backs reaching 1,000 yards and ten touchdowns. I think what you're saying with just Crowell is reasonable.

Everyone is better than Richardson ( almost literally). We ran the ball against opposing teams' base defenses more than any other team. That means the other teams knew what was coming. Either they were really good at guessing or our play-calling was not very good (for a multitude of reasons).
Pure and simple they Crowded the box and always had 10 near the box from the get go with the INTENT (Game Plan) to stop the run and if we could - Let the QB beat us.
They will do that again this year and keep on doing it until we get a QB who is consistently accurate to make them pay. Why our Play action was so effective and even our straight out patterns had WR open cause the D's Game plan was to stop the run. Not talking of course about obvious passing downs.
