Those who did this are criminals and murderers. They killed for no good reason. They deserve their punishment, and those who did the killings should never see the light of day ever again.

This is highly untrue. I don't think anyone thinks "thug" should be erased from the language. But "Thug" is used to describe Black people and others while white people are not called "thugs". It's essentially code for <Insert N Word Here> in the media.

a motorcycle club and a biker gang are basically the same thing. A riding club (what I was originally thinking of) and a motorcycle club/biker gang are *not* the same thing.

Either way, biker gang implies criminal activity.

You're right. These biker gangs are not being called thugs in the media. They are being called things just as bad or worse.

You object to the verbiage of thug because of your own perspective. I think that idea is ludicrous. Just people using their perspective of a word as some excuse why others shouldn't use it.

How does using terms like "the thug life" hold up as not being a double standard? Many wish to use such a term and then when being called on it, expect a different term to be used? Mmmm hmmmmm.....

I don't think people should or shouldn't use "thug". I don't think you know me if you think I object to a word being used or restrictions to apply to people. That's just not who I am.

Doesn't the whole, "just as bad or worse" comment kinda lend itself to a comparison to "separate but equal" debate. This time over word choice? My argument is that "thug" is a code word for the N word. The beautiful thing about words is that they are tailor made to describe exactly what you want to describe. Episodes of major, white, mob violence should produce just as many articles and people calling them "thugs" as Mike Brown and Trayvon got, or the communities of Ferguson and Baltimore. But it doesn't. Hence why I think "thug" is the new N Word for the PC crowd.

I use the term "wannabe" because most of the white youth have no idea what being a thug is. They just dress like it and act like it to look tough and/or "be cool".

Counter culture is the coolest thing you can do in America. And there's nothing more counter culture than being black in America. No wonder everyone loves the style.

Let me say... I can understand why you would be looking for it. The difference I see here is that there is no controversey. Nobody is questioning whether or not the officers firing on them or making mass arrests was justified... or who is ultimately responsible for the deaths. The perpetrators are responsible for the deaths and nobody is questioning whether or not the police were right to engage in gunfire. There's no reason to examine the circumstances of the situation leading up to the confrontation. They got what they were looking for, so there's no need to examine the principals (or principles) involved. That's all there is to it. JMO.

No, you don't. The first image that pops into your head is a white guy, probably southern, probably overweight, probably doesn't look very bright. That's how language works.

Words convey information and they create images in our head. The word "thug" conjures up an image of a young black male for most people, just as "redneck" or "hillbilly" is a rural white male...

Ok, then don't claim "Thug isn't the new n-word". It's not that hard of a concept...

But thug? I don't associate "thug" with blacks, hispanics, whites - any race. Thug is behavior that doesn't belong. It's actions that don't belong.

It isn't "race sensitive". At least for me.
