I would have thought that Northcutt would have been gone closer to the end of our season, most likely while the team was reviewing and evaluating the franchises performance during Jan.
Here we are, just few days away from training camp starting, and the Browns up and fire their Director of Player Engagement, right at the time when it would seem his services are most in need...to help the new guys with their many needs, just getting settled in, etc.
Something happened...either some information that previously unknown became known or there was some kind of disagreement concerning the duties or performance of Northcutt. Maybe Northcutt wanted to leave?...IMO, something suddenly changed.
It does appear that Farmer's idea of what the Dir. of Player Development/Engagement was supposed to do is much different than the type of stuff Aaron Shea did. For example, using Northcutt as his messenger to the coaches on the sidelines.
What was Northcutt's involvement with Justin Gilbert, Josh Gordon and Johnny Manziel during the past season? Was Northcutt doing the traditional type duties or was he being used by Farmer in some other capacity?
There is likely more to this story that will come out in time.

Farmer came in and learned under Banner for a season. blaming banner for texgate. I do not know how you made that leap ... "Farmer came in and learned under Banner for a season. What was reported about Banner? That he wanted to have assistant coaches report directly to him. That he wanted more input into the on-field product. Then Farmer takes a similar tact last year with the texting and now this." what he said. are you telling me this doesnt imply banner Taught him to do it lol.

I agree EO. I think when Pet looked back at the end of last year and saw all of the confusion and all of the meddling, he laid down the law with both Haslem and Farmer. If you have noticed neither one of them is really been involved in press conferences, at least not like it was last year. This is Pet's Team, and I think he demanded to be left alone and let him do his job. I just hope he does a good enough job to retain it.

Farmer came in and learned under Banner for a season. blaming banner for texgate. I do not know how you made that leap ... It fits his agenda that anyone who doesn't run screaming into the night about dysfunction when reading an article such as this a Farmer apologist... hence the blame is laid on Banner... when no such thing was stated. That said, based on Farmer texting.. I would expect a little tension and also as any good manager would... if he sees a little weakness he should work to solidify his position...Go Pett if push comes to shove I am pushing on Pett's side.

It's a funny thing Ytown, but since we still have no idea what exactly was said in those texts, Could it have been Farmer texting at the behest of Haslam? Just wondering.....

are you telling me this doesnt imply banner Taught him to do it lol. Taught him to text to the sidelines? No, of course not. I think the poster is suggesting he took a similar tact in general, inappropriate control measures. At least that is what I got out of the comment.

Does anyone else think that this Northcutt hire was kind of weird? We go from Aaron Shea, a former player (not sure what his education credentials are)... to a guy from the college arena with 3 degrees including a PhD? Sounds oddly over qualified to me to be a part time life coach.

Drawing a corollary does not imply a cause and effect relationship.

j/c Grossi has inside sources? That statement right there should sound alarms. Grossi hasn't broken a news flash since anyone can remember. Yet, he is getting scoop regarding friction between Pettine and Pettine's staff with Farmer/Northcutt! Please!

Yet, he is getting scoop regarding friction between Pettine and Pettine's staff with Farmer/Northcutt! Please! Grossi doesn't have any inside sources. He's speculating. He's slanting his speculation in a negative fashion. That's what he does. He could have easily stated the departure of Northcutt shows that the relationship between coach and GM is on the mend. Pettine asked that Northcutt be removed and Farmer honored his coaches wishes.
LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

Wasn't this guy's job to make sure players stayed out of trouble? If so, he underperformed (although having to keep tabs on Manziel and Gordon seems like a near impossible task). So he failed at his job AND he pissed off the head coach. Sounds like he was trying to get fired.

both were meddling where they didnt belong mourg...both were meddling?
Who are you talking about?
Farmer and Northcutt?
If you are attempting to say that Pettine and Farmer are both guilty, you have to explain that one.
If Pettine thought Haslam was behind the texting, chances are he is going to overlook it during the season. But if Pettine found out that Haslam was not asking Farmer to contact the coaches during games and that it Farmer's choice to use Northcutt to question the coaches on the sidelines...that might ruffle Pettine's feathers.
The question I have no answer to is ..why now?...just days before training camp starts?
The timing of this (firing Northcutt) does not make sense...

If fresh information recently became known, it might explain why the sudden departure of Northcutt.
The next question becomes, will Farmer's 4 week suspension be longer than 4 weeks?

The next question becomes, will Farmer's 4 week suspension be longer than 4 weeks? I see no basis for believing that the team would extend Farmer's suspension. That's where any extension would have to come from. The league has issued their discipline and there is less than 1% chance that gets changed from Goddell's office. Actually, Mac that's some impressive SWAG where the S stands for Silly. It's right up there with the writing style of....Tony Grossi!

Cleveland.com's Tom Reed wrote: "It's believed the club could fill the opening by promoting from within the organization." Based on the team's promotion of Shea in 2011, that's a definite possibility, especially with the season quickly approaching. Either way, the new Director of Player Engagement will likely have close ties to Farmer, since the person in this position works so closely with the players and general manager. http://www.dawgsbynature.com/2015/7/19/9...ayer-engagement

Northcutt...wasn't he the one who bought Gordon his drink on the plane to Las Vegas... lol
I mean I know Gordon get deservedly ripped but if we got a hire who's job is to make sure our young ones stay clean and we got a guy on suspension you'd think he would periodically go over the rules and deadlines of the suspension as part of his duties. As IN WHAT ELSE DO YOU HAVE TO DO!?! Good firing. Not a scapegoat as first thought. Just a shmo not doing his job!

tom reed does this every week. its a chat thing where fans ask questions. Talk Cleveland Browns football with beat reporter Tom Reed today at 1 p.m. http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ss..._social_featureTom Reed, Northeast Ohio Media Group 3 hours ago @Chuck_Booms We reported this story last week. Since then, what I've heard is that Northcutt was supposed to report directly to Pettine. He was not doing this and Pettine called him on it. Is that true? Was that what led to the parting of ways? I can't say that for sure.
I do think the episode reflects poorly on Ray because his hand-picked guy barely lasted a year on the job. if so good for pettine. maybe he learned that he cant let the FO walk all over him to the point where coaching staff demand to leave?
