How come the media portrays anyone white as "mentally ill" when shooting up a bunch of people, but African Americans are labeled as thugs? What if a Muslim had been the shooter? Swish brought up both of these points in the third post of this thread. Sorry

I can't control the media, with the exception of the ratings they get for my viewership. I don't think this scumbag is mentally ill, other than having no morals and no value of human life. This is the type of person who should be removed from society with no chance to return. Death is the most guaranteed way to achieve this. Radical islamists follow an immoral, unjust, screwed up philosophy just like this scumbag murderer. How are they different? To me, a thug is a few steps below a murderer, even though the thugees were traditionally murderers. The kids/young adults rioting in baltiwhore are thugs.

I know you can't and I don't think you should control the media. I don't mean to imply they change your thoughts either, but they do change the thoughts and opinions of many.
I also think current reactions to labels are showing signs of changing. I here more people say they see no difference between types of fanaticism when it comes to terrorism.

Yet another instance where we should just convict him and then right afterwards, take him to the nearest location and put a bullet in his head.
JMO No. I think guns should not be used for violence, only self defense or national security.

If it's justice you're after, then Opie enduring the horrors of a rugged federal prison that he's quite obviously unequipped to handle the rigors of will do just fine. A bullet to the head would be a compassionate act of mercy for him at this point.

Since some people have referenced only white mass murderers having their mental state questioned in the media, here are some counterexamples. Note: there aren't nearly as many non-white mass murderers we hear about in the news. Here are several counterexamples to the media not suggesting mental illness plays a role in these cases. http://www.theroot.com/photos/2013/09/black_mass_shooters_rare_gunmen.htmlColin Ferguson Ferguson opened fire on a crowded Long Island Rail Road train in 1993, killing six people and injuring 19. In his pockets, police found scribbled notes in which Ferguson expressed his reasons for the shooting -- including a previous arrest. At the trial, Ferguson's lawyers used the "black rage" defense, claiming that Ferguson had been driven to insanity because of racism and could not be held responsible for his crimes. Ferguson was sentenced to 315 years to life in prison. http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/11/10/virginia.sniper.execution/index.html?_s=PM:CRIME John Allen Muhammad (DC Freeway sniper) In a written statement issued earlier Tuesday, lawyer Sheldon accused Virginia of racing to "execute a severely mentally ill man who also suffered from Gulf War Syndrome the day before Veterans Day." Muhammad met Tuesday with J. Wyndal Gordon, his former stand-by attorney in his Maryland trial, in which he represented himself. "His attitude was strong, it was sturdy," Gordon told reporters. "Mr. Mohammad maintains his innocence in this case, and he always has. He is not remorseful, although he does extend his condolences to the families. What these families went through is tragic in every level. Given the injustices in this case, what Mr. Mohammad went through is equally as tragic." Gordon said he does not consider Mohammad to be insane. "However," he added, "I am not a psychiatrist or a psychologist." http://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/feb/08/lapd-manhunt-chris-dorner-trainingRevenge, blood, pursuit, ingredients of countless westerns and action films from Hollywood, on the other side of the mountains, and a story trending on Twitter buzzed with film references: Cape Fear, Rambo, The Deer Hunter, The Bourne Ultimatum, The Fugitive. In reality Dorner was probably suffering from mental illness and three families were mourning the death of innocents but already, in some minds, he was becoming legend. Facebook pages sprouted in support, hailing him a rebel, and media commentators hyped his martial skills as if the navy reserves really did breed Rambos. http://abcnews.go.com/Health/MindMoodNew...tory?id=9019410Fort Hood Motive Terrorism or Mental Illness? Nov. 9, 2009 By LAUREN COX ABC News Medical Unit Mental Illness, Murder and Religion Are Complex Meld "I think it would be a mistake for people to theorize [he did this] because he is an adherent of this or that religious faith," said Dinwiddie, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral neuroscience at the University of Chicago. "The mental illness comes first, then flowing from that is the adoption of perhaps, unusual, religious beliefs." http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/crim...acd6_story.htmlThe government contractor who killed 12 people at the Washington Navy Yard last week was driven by delusions that he was being controlled by low-frequency radio waves and scratched the words “End the torment!” on the barrel of the shotgun he used, the FBI said Wednesday, offering new, chilling details of the attack. http://abcnews.go.com/US/seung-hui-chos-mental-health-records-released/story?id=8278195 The missing pieces of the mental health records of Virginia Tech shooter Seung-Hui Cho were made public today by the university, offering the first glimpse at the medical evaluations Cho underwent prior to committing the deadliest school shooting in U.S. history. The records chronicle two telephone conversations and one in-person visit between Cho and mental health professionals at the Cook Counseling Center, the university's student mental health services provider, in the winter of 2005, the only instances in which the student ever interacted with the center, according to authorities. Throughout his visits with mental health professionals, Cho denied having any homicidal or suicidal thoughts, according to documents.

There's a fine line between justice and vengeance. If it were the parents or members of the victims pulling the trigger, then it "could" be vengeance, but it wouldn't be them. It just makes me sick him, and so many others, will rot away in a jail cell. Back in the days of being convicted, we'd bury someone up to their head and throw stones at them. Golden Rule. I don't see a cheap, but quick death via a bullet in the head from a state executioner as *not* being justice in this case, but that's jmo.

try them in court, convict them, and put them down. quick. This day and age, with phones able to take pics, videos, etc... most instances are clear cut. DNA matching and a plethora of other technologies... ya, again, in some instances let's convict them and then send them to Hell IMMEDIATELY. Death row is too slow.

Although I wouldn't sympathize with that nut job if they carried out that sorta sentence, but wouldn't be as blind to say/admit that it might be a bit primitive. Stoning him though wasn't my point.

DNA is solving rape, murder and etc cases that occurred many years ago. Maybe not every case has a clear cut DNA match, but those that do and the guilt is of no question, then agree to whatever death device, tool or method for your state and get the scum under the ground, instead of letting them live above it. Jmo of course.

Your wording gave the impression that it was possible. And as I said earlier, executing him is having compassionate mercy on him. One shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but looking at this young man, I deduce that a sentence of life imprisonment in a federal penitentiary is the worst possible fate he could suffer through at this point.

I wonder if permanent imprisonment, and never knowing if someone is going to stick a homemade knife in your back, isn't a worse punishment than death. If I knew that I was going to prison, and would never get out, I think that I would probably prefer being put to death.

DNA is definitely helping solve cases (new and old) but I think it's use and effectiveness has been highly exaggerated by television.
I've long said that I'm pretty neutral on the death penalty.. primarily because it does take years, even decades, before most people who receive it are actually executed.

No, as ppl like this nut and the Boston Bomber are put in special areas of prions and given special attention in regards to being high profile and in regards of their safety. They throw these freaks in the general population, then I love and agree with your post. I'd also agree rotting away in a cell knowing that's your current and future may indeed be torture, but I'm going to resort back that keeping someone whose fate is already sealed is a waste of tax money, So many views and discussions we could go with this.

You mean they can't collect a sample, send it to their lab and have the results texted to them before they even finish processing the scene? I also love the facial recognition or fingerprint software that gives them a match in 30 seconds.

Which is a fate worse than being in general population. If you can stomach it, look up the recent exposes written on those in the special protections of supermax prisons in Colorado. They often end up eating their own appendages and ripping the flesh from their bodies as their mental facilities slowly deteriorate.

There are 1000 knife crime victims a month in London, UK. How am I wrong? Because the homicide rate in the US is quadruple (4.1 murders/100,000 people/year) that in the UK (1.0 murders/100,000 people/year) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_intentional_homicide_rate

JMO No. I think guns should not be used for violence, only self defense or national security. Or Hunting? Never mind. Hunters need to use them to defend themselves from their prey. Especially big game trophy hunters.

A little perspective... as many of us are calling for vengeance and immediate death to Dylann Roof, some families of the victims are calling for forgiveness... Families of Charleston shooting victims to Dylann Roof: We forgive you ‘You hurt me. You hurt a lot of people. But God forgives you. I forgive you.’ By Dylan Stableford 1 hour ago Relatives of the Charleston church shooting victims gave emotional statements during Dylann Roof’s initial court appearance Friday, some of them breaking into sobs as one after another they told the man suspected of killing their loved ones that they forgive him. “You took something really precious from me. I will never talk to her again,” the daughter of 70-year-old Ethel Lance, one of nine people killed in Wednesday's massacre, said. “But I forgive you and have mercy on your soul. You hurt me. You hurt a lot of people. But God forgives you. I forgive you.” Felecia Sanders, mother of the youngest victim, 26-year-old Tywanza Sanders, also spoke. “Every fiber in my body hurts,” Sanders said, “and I will never be the same.” Roof is accused of carrying out the killings during a Bible study session inside Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church Wednesday night in what investigators are treating as a hate crime. Sanders survived the shooting by playing dead. “We welcomed you Wednesday night in our Bible study with open arms. You have killed some of the most beautifulest people that I know,” she said in court. “As we said in the Bible study, we enjoyed you, but may God have mercy on you.” Flanked by two officers in flak jackets, Roof appeared in court via a closed-circuit video link from a holding cell inside the Charleston County jail. The 21-year-old was charged Friday with nine counts of murder and one firearms charge. Roof answered a few questions from the judge, confirming his address, age and that he is not employed. He looked down as the family members spoke, but did not show emotion. “I forgive you, and my family forgives you,” Anthony Thompson, the husband of 59-year-old Myra Thompson, said. “But we would like you take this opportunity to repent. Change your ways.” “Although my grandfather and the other victims died at the hands of hate, this is proof, everyone’s plea for your soul is proof they lived in love and their legacies will live in love,” the grandson of 74-year-old Daniel Simmons said. “So hate won't win.” “A hateful person came to this community with some crazy idea he’d be able to divide, but all he did was unite us and make us love each other even more,” Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr. told the Associated Press. Forgiving Roof, though, hasn’t been easy for everyone. “For me, I am a work in progress,” admitted a relative of 49-year-old Depayne Middleton Doctor. “I am very angry, [but] we are the family that love built. We have no room for hate, so I have to forgive.” God Bless Them because I don't know if I would have that much strength. Edit.. at least not this soon.

The knife/gun comparison is kind of a waste of time. Maybe if we had an NKA that promoted selling knives that have a higher kill rate or spent millions to block knife laws it would make more sense. The murder rate in this country keeps rising and the high majority of these crimes are done with guns that were obtained legally, in spite history of mental illnesses. Although there is trivial anecdotal evidence of guns being used to stop gun violence most evidence points to the fact that even gun owners are often victims of gun violence. The consistent response is we need more guns. We have more guns now. We have been increasing the number of gun owners and at the same time these crimes are increasing as well.

I believe if I could buy a fully automatic knife with a 100 round barrel clip we may be able to compare them. But I can't, so we won't.

The murder rate has dropped steadily for some time now. What's on the rise is these heinous crimes that are seemingly without motive. A great deal of murders involve money and love. That's the first two areas any good detective will explore. But now we have a rise in these random killing sprees where strangers kill strangers. And that's scarier than "she cheated on him" or "Gang turf thing".

people want to keep saying that "without guns, people will just use knives".
ok, but we all have a much higher rate of not only surviving, but DEFENDING ourselves from a knife attack.
I dunno how many have lived in Europe, but i can tell you that gun violence does happen. but it happens at such a low rate that when a shooting happens, it's national news in that country, sometimes in multiple countries. it's equivalent to a plane crash, that it's actually rare for one to crash so it's on national media.
i own weapons, simply because i want one. but when i move to europe, best believe i won't lose sleep over selling my AR 15, or 9mm.
i MUCH rather deal with knife violence than gun violence.

Such a sad story.
I really can't stand people and their agenda with this story. Mixing it with the race-baiting police brutality stories. Claiming it isn't about mental health, but rather gun laws that aren't good enough.
Mental health is a HUGE problem in this country. So are gun issues. Why can't both be a problem? Why do people have to take sides?
I don't really know what happened with this kid before he did what he did, but it really seems like it was driven by hate. That doesn't mean that mental health wasn't an issue...
This is why I don't vote, and don't do politics, because politicians, and even the people who support them do nothing but bicker and take sides, instead of coming together and trying to make things better. They spend more time, money, and resources on smear campaigns than they do on actual work once they get into office.
I feel for the families that lost someone the other day. It's a horrible tragedy that nobody should have to go through. I hate everything about this story. My facebook feed has been nothing but political and social knobs measuring their junk and using this as a vehicle for it.

I really don't want to get into the political aspect of this right now. I hate that our "leaders" are doing this so soon, and the citizens, like puppets, follow suit.
This incident makes me feel sad, sick, pissed off, and empty.
God bless those that lost their loved ones, the community, and the nation. Let's just care about each other a little more. It's the only way to make things better.

The murder rate in this country keeps rising Really? My bad. I meant these types of murders. Sometimes think people can just read my mind.

Mental health is a HUGE problem in this country. So are gun issues. Why can't both be a problem? Why do people have to take sides? Arguments over guns and religion garner far more interest than pleas for a more aware and involved society. As I said earlier, I find it far more disturbing that when these incidents occur, there's almost always someone who comes out and says "yeah, he was behaving really bizarrely and talking about doing something vaguely, but I let it go". In almost all of these cases, the warning signs are glowing like neons. How often does someone with no history of mental illness, surrounded by friends and lovers with a steady job pull off one of these mass shootings?

Violence? In that instance, the gun would be used for JUSTICE. Something most criminals these days don't seem to have fear over. If it's justice you're after, then Opie enduring the horrors of a rugged federal prison that he's quite obviously unequipped to handle the rigors of will do just fine. A bullet to the head would be a compassionate act of mercy for him at this point. Opie will be a hero in prison with the Aryans.
You may be in the drivers seat but God is holding the map. #GMSTRONG
