I guess Bush changed his name to "Wisconsin"..... MERRILL, Wis. - A service station that offered discounted gas to senior citizens and people supporting youth sports has been ordered by the state to raise its prices. ADVERTISEMENT Center City BP owner Raj Bhandari has been offering senior citizens a 2 cent per gallon price break and discount cards that let sports boosters pay 3 cents less per gallon. But the state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection says those deals violate Wisconsin's Unfair Sales Act, which requires stations to sell gas for about 9.2 percent more than the wholesale price. Bhandari said he received a letter from the state auditor last month saying the state would sue him if he did not raise his prices. The state could penalize him for each discounted gallon he sold, with the fine determined by a judge. Bhandari, who bought the station a year ago, said he worries customers will think he stopped the discounts because he wants to make more money. About 10 percent of his customers had used the discount cards. Dale Van Camp said he bought a $50 card to support the local youth hockey program. It would have saved him about $100 per year on gas, he said. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070509/ap_on_fe_st/odd_cheap_gas

I believe that law was passed to keep the big corps from under cutting the little man and forcing them out of business. This is not the reason the law was passed. I'm wondering what is forcing the state to act.

That's why I titled it the way I did. People blame Bush for gas prices, and plain as day Wisconsin is ultimately responsible for their own gas prices. Bush has zero to do with it.

The state is only regulating prices above the wholesale level. I bet if we bomed the next OPEC meeting prices would fall.

...I was wrong...it was the Japs using a Russian made device
Cold-war device used to cause Katrina? IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (AP) — An Idaho weatherman says Japan's Yakuza mafia used a Russian-made electromagnetic generator to cause Hurricane Katrina in a bid to avenge itself for the Hiroshima atom bomb attack — and that this technology will soon be wielded again to hit another U.S. city.
Meteorologist Scott Stevens, a nine-year veteran of KPVI-TV in Pocatello, said he was struggling to forecast weather patterns starting in 1998 when he discovered the theory on the Internet. It's now detailed on Stevens' website, www.weatherwars.info, the Idaho Falls Post Register reported.
Stevens, who is among several people to offer alternative and generally discounted theories for the storm that flooded New Orleans, says a little-known oversight in physical laws makes it possible to create and control storms — especially if you're armed with the Cold War-era weapon said to have been made by the Russians in 1976. Stevens became convinced of the existence of the Russian device when he observed an unusual Montana cold front in 2004.
"I just got sick to my stomach because these clouds were unnatural and that meant they had (the machine) on all the time," Stevens said. "I was left trying to forecast the intent of some organization rather than the weather of this planet."
Stevens said oddities in Hurricane Katrina storm patterns underpin his theory.
And, according to his website, so does the fact that Katrina and Ivan — the name given to a destructive hurricane that hit Florida in September 2004 — both sound Russian.
Scientists discount Stevens' claims as ludicrous and say they run contrary to the second law of thermodynamics, that energy can be neither created nor destroyed.
"I have been doing hurricane research for the better part of 20 years now, and there was nothing unusual to me about any of the satellite imagery of Katrina," said Rob Young, a hurricane expert at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, N.C. "It's laughable to think it could have been manmade."
Stevens' bosses at KPVI-TV say their employee can think and say what he wants — as long as he keeps the station out of the debate and acknowledges that his views are his own opinion. Bill Fouch, KPVI's general manager, compared Stevens' musings to political or religious beliefs that journalists suppress on the job.
"He doesn't talk about it on his weathercast," Fouch said. "He's very knowledgeable about weather, and he's very popular."

I've seen your pic, I don't want to wndear you to me People are always blaming Bush for gas prices in every publication. People say we are in an oil war and Bush wants prices to stay high, no one has once backed it up with proof. this article sheds some proof that he has zero to do with it. Sorry I dashed your hopes when you saw the title.

Oh,you didn't "dash my hopes".
No president can "control" the prices of anything unless he ennacts a "price freeze" like Nixon did. And that's an "accross the board freeze on everything".
My actual initial reaction to the title was.................... What the hell kind of idiotic premise could this possibly be based upon?
But,as I said before, the title was so misleading, the subject matter had nothing to do with the title. Or I probably wouldn't have wasted my time.
Which is.....................why you have topic titles in the first place. Ya know?

No. The only premise I've indicated is that since the GOP is far more lax on regulations on oil companies and have,in the past, given them tax breaks based on exploration and oppened up more places for exploration?
It's in those companies best interest to have the GOP in power. Which only makes sense if you think about it for a minute. So I do believe the oil companies may wish to paint things in a more favorable light to help keep them in power. It's just human nature.
But politicians per say have no direct ability to control fuel prices. To say that they do is just absurd IMO

There's one issue with your agenda here.
While no one can prove Bush has anything to do directly with gas prices, your attempt to prove he doesn't doesn't work either.
The article clearly states Wisconsin has a law that regulates gas prices to 9 something cents over wholesale.
That doesn't mean that wholesale isn't overpriced.
I personally don't think anyone but OPEC is to blame for oil prices, they control the output of crude oil, which is what causes the fluctuation of our gas prices at the pump. In honestly, the cost to take the oil out of the ground is no more this week than it was last week, and no more this month that it was last month.
But if OPEC scales back production, there's less on the market, and they can charge a premium, in the end it's OPECs greed that control gas prices.
All the more reason we need to find an alternative source, or supply our own oil.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

Well now Florida, don't forget, any time there's a natural disaster in America, prices go up too.
The line we always get is..................."With this refinery down,we can't keep up production to meet the need so prices must rise."
It's always some line of BS from the oil companies and OPEC.

When they are down it is true. The fact that we don't have more refineries isn't the oil companies fault. They are guilty of many things but this isn't one of them.

Lack of operating refineries does affect the gas prices, but those tend to not be spikes like regular increases like we see with OPEC pricing, unless there's a sudden demand for gas beyond what is considered normal. Such as an impending hurricane, forces residents to stock up on gas for generators, then we see a short term spike while more gas is directed to the affected area to meet demand.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

Well let me ask you,if a refinery is down, why must prices rise? There's only one reason. So the oil companies can make the SAME profit while saling LESS product. They make "more per gallon". Their "cost didn't rise" on the crude. That's like say for example...................................... A carpentry business has three cews and three trucks. One truck for each crew. One of those trucks breaks down. So what does the carpentry business do? Charges his existing customers MORE money to make up for his broken truck? But see,the carpenter can't do that. Because he doesn't have the market cornered. People would just fire them and hire a company with more fair prices and business practices. Not so with the oil companies.

well, what would help is more refineries and a Federally Mandated standard on Gasoline Blends instead of each and every state having their own standards. Considering that oil production is actually a national asset, I would have no problem at all with a Federal standard on it.

Don't the oil companies OWN the refineries?? If so, how can you say that the lack of crude oil refining capacity isn't their fault? Of course it's their fault! If they invest in refining capacity, they lose an excuse to keep prices high. What am I missing here?

Prices are dictated by the futures market. Supply and demand come into play. That will spike gas prices. If you want to find fault in that your arguement would be better if you were to ask why do they spike so quickly but subside slowly.
