Considering the overall evidence in the long career of McCown, I would suggest that he is more aptly compared to a sinking ship rather than a bridge. Hmmm. He has been afloat for 12 years. That is hardly sinking, Pit...

It has to make one wonder how a mediocre at best QB in mostly a back up role over a 12 year career, at 36 years of age come Saturday will perform now doesn't it?
Or maybe not so much.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

JC.. As is my nature, I remain optimistic. In the case of the Browns, that is cautiously optimistic. I can see both sides of the isles here, both are legitimate in the concerns and optimisms. And with any season, any team, it takes just the right combination of things going right to achieve the goal. Some teams have players who make those "right things" more common, but in the end, even the best looking team could fall flat on their face, and the worst rise to the top. But, in the grand scope of things, and as much as I love to watch football, not only my Browns, It is entertainment, and I refuse to let anything that happens in or out of season regarding the team upset me, or cause me any concern or grief. Life is complicated enough without worrying who is starting at QB for the Browns.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

Browns Head Coach Mike Pettine Places 28th in NFL.com Power Rankings By and large, Cleveland Browns fans have bought into head coach Mike Pettine. Some of the national media has not. In NFL.com's annual power rankings of the league's 32 head coaches, Pettine ranked 28th, a three-spot improvement from last season. Pettine's placement is relatively fair, as he ranks above Jim Tomsula (49ers), Dan Quinn (Falcons), Todd Bowles (Jets), and Jay Gruden (Redskins). However, placing both Gus Bradley (Jaguars) and Joe Philbin (Dolphins) ahead of Pettine is arguably wrong, given Pettine's handling of the adversity surrounding the Browns in 2014. Either way, here is the analysis of Pettine, written by NFL Media analyst Elliot Harrison: "Pettine looked to have things turned around in Cleveland last season, getting off to a promising 7-4 start -- and then the bottom fell out. Turning to Johnny Manziel at quarterback didn't do anything to brighten the gloomy finish to the year. Pettine's defensive background should come in handy, as the Browns have plenty of young talent to work with, players -- like former first-round pick Justin Gilbert -- who, if they pan out, could make quite a difference going forward. However, Pettine must also prove he and his staff can work wonders with quarterbacks." The writeup is accurate, and surprisingly absent of any Cleveland slights. As Harrison states, Pettine and his new offensive coordinator John DeFilippo must make the most out of a lackluster corps of quarterbacks. With just one season under his belt, Pettine has a lot to prove. He's worked wonders so far, but he faces major obstacles, ranging from a weak offense to a strong schedule. Pettine can work his way up the list, but he'll have to earn every inch. http://www.dawgsbynature.com/2015/7/2/88...-power-rankings

Yeah we get it they broke it down to 6 categories and rated them independently then put them all together and we came up 30? No credibility.
Cause of the reasons given. We don't have an established QB. Ok get it - even me the optimist agrees with that. Got to rank with what it is regardless if we try to make it competitive with what the QB can or cannot do.
I get it...but then that one portion of our ranking came up over n over again regardless of our reality in roster and coaching.
Regardless of our LOS strengths these Hi-Light film officienados don't seem to get how important that LOS is.
Oh and all our additions we made in 2 years are WIPED out cause of the 2 first round picks of 2014...I guess they have declared both bust at least that is what it says on their clipboards. I guess we ignore the additions of Bitonio Kirksey, West, Crowell, Amonty Bryant, Gabriel, Kwan Williams, Shelton, Erving, Orchard, and all the rest. All them don't count cause they aren't a WR, or QB...
Again Incredulous is all I come up with on this ranking. Lets play the freaking games and see where we actually stand before I'm told that this ranking is the "REALITY" cause it is far from reality...the reality is the actual 2015 Season.
But the author of this snippet was correct its been easy being negative and tough being an optimist.

Oh and all our additions we made in 2 years are WIPED out cause of the 2 first round picks of 2014.. I don't think that is quite accurate. Yes, those two guys were included, but they were also referring to TRich, Weeden, and Taylor. Heck, they actually listed Mingo in a positive way, but our DC recently said that Mingo was going to have to earn his playing time. I think the lack of success of our first round picks over a span of several years is hurtful. I think losing multiple Pro Bowlers is hurtful. And again, if you don't have a QB on your roster that can help you move forward, how bright is future? People can disagree w/the ranking and that is their right, but I don't think the ranking is whacked. It might be a bit off, but it's certainly reasonable.

At this point what choice is there but to assume they are both busts they both played like crap last year? Are they suppose to assume they will turn the corner and be great and thus change our fortunes or are they to assume they are who they showed themselves to be last season on the field? I understand you want them to buck their (JF and Gilbert) trend but how can they do that when what they saw is all they truly have to go on. Truth be told thats all you have to go on as well. Somehow you wish to deny what you and all of us saw. I think what your missing here or the point that I would make is where on the list of players you named does the impact/game changer come from? There all solid players but they aren't going to change the outcome of the game. Shelton and Erving and Orchard haven't played a snap and you want them to imagine they play great, just like you have without anything substantive???? Its my biggest gripe with you, I don't assume they will be great and I don't assume they will be horrid. I don't assume because Text drafted them they will be great either. Truth be told based on the small sample size we have of Texts 1st round picks they will be horrid. While Text has been on point with his roll players he hasn't picked a guy yet that makes a difference. You like to say that the move to McCown was a lateral move how so? He has shown to be a career loser and why and hell would you make a move away from a guy that has shown he can win to a guy who has shown to be a loser? It's stupid it really is, but you refuse to see it for what it is. If nothing else you have a guy that has worked with your guys and that has been productive and won games and you toss that to the side for a career loser? I could have seen adding McCown to the roster and to allow him to compete but to hand him the keys as a career loser, common can't you remove the blinders for just a moment. That move plays the biggest roll in our ranking and they see Mccown for what he is, and you don't like it? It's not them that needs to face the reality of who we are, it truly is you....

I did not know they were going as far back as 2012 to look into our future 3 years coming.
2012 Weeden n Trent well actually Trent is Out and it is Weeden (Manziel who we got for Trent) and Gilbert.
Agreed we have no concrete Franchise QB - we do have a Prospect in Manziel to still be determined.
RB - I think we more than made up for it with West,Crowell n Duke.
Gilbert could still be a good CB...but I agree until that is SO we cannot account for him as good just not a bust.
Yet as far as the TEAM goes we are not in dired straights regarding our DBs we have a pretty good unit. So in the ROSTER Broad scheme of things...how are we ranked 30.
Again as much as the QB position is important. I'm not on some fantasy cloud, I do recognize that. As positive as I am I have stated that if per chance we do make the playoffs as it stands right now I don't see us getting past the first round.
My point is not that we are Championship ready. My point is that I the real me (not the HOMER) find it Incredulous to rank us #30. If we are the 3rd worst team in the NFL via record the next 3 years or any of the 3 years individually I will gladly bow down to their findings.
But I say that only because I am confident we are not any close to #30...are we complete. Until we get that Franchise QB we are not.

Sorry I am a fan and follow the NFL...Individual Fantasy point proficient players is not my quest.
I'm looking for a team that if we invest high in an Impact player it would mean something as being part of a team.
We have plenty of players who are above average and solid who as a TEAM as a UNIT of Offense 11+ players can score to make this team efficient.
If what you mean where is the individual who can Carry this team. Got news for you only the QB can do that as an Individual. If your O is determined by one individual Elite play - That team will not go far. Cause good teams will find away to shut that player down. Then what? The teams that win have that system executing so that if a piece is missing there will be little fall out! These guys are STAT Boys...it is not Reality. Via the STATS maybe we are truly #30 but Football is not dedicated to stats.
I know it and I know you know it too.
btw your biggest gripe with me is total hog wash...again get over Choke...errr I mean Hoyer.

I think you know that its not about fantasy with me as well. You can have a team of solid players and win games but not without a QB. But when I look at our roster I see a lot of solid but no one that stands out to the point where they can change the course of a game. You must nail down those guys at the top of your draft we haven't. Thus we are a QB less team with no impact which when you do the math adds up to more losing. Yes in a perfect world its the QB with the biggest impact, but short of that an elite pass rusher or RB or TE or WR somewhere on your roster you need THAT guy. We don't have him outside of Gipson we lack play makers and it will get us just like it ALWAYS does. The highlight guys you seem so set against having are the guys that turn losing into winning, we need them and we don't have them. Oh BTW I will get over Hoyer when you stop being the worlds biggest HOMER.

How many QBs in the league are the type where you can put the game in their hands? That's just a question...not an endorsement of another.
Brady Rapistburger P Manning - up until he gets tired like in the playoffs Rogers Luck? Brees?
Then there is tier two:
Flacco Rivers Wilson Tannehill Romo E Manning Ryan? Newton?
Then there is everyone else.
We need to get at least a tier-two guy if we really want to make noise...and so does 13 other teams in the league. Of those 13 teams, these teams have a better QB...who has proven to NOT be the guy...but they cannot move on from him for various reasons:
Dalton Stafford Cutler A Smith Palmer Kaepernick
These teams have young guys who appear at this point to have more promise than our young guy(s):
Carr Bridgewater Bortles Mariota - no NFL snaps yet Winston - see Mariotta
Lastly there is (not naming the guy because "who knows who he is"):
Cleveland Jets Buffalo
So...ESPIN has rated us as the best team without a QB. I see that. I don't agree, but I see it.
I see the NFL as a three-tier league - top 1/3, middle 1/3, bottom 1/3. We've shown to be a bottom 1/3 team...so...any ranking from about 21-32 is hard to dispute. If we had a QB prospect, I'd think we'd be closer to 21 than 30...but we don't.
If McCown can have a special year we will creep inside the 20s...if he has a crappy year, we could actually slide down from 30. I'm willing to get behind McCown and hope for the best..it's all we've got at the moment so why not?
We have a long way to go. If I were Pettine, articles like these would be plastered all over the locker room.

OK so we are talking about the outlook of the Browns three years down the line. We will use drafts from how many years back to determine the future abilities of the current front office. I guess there will be no free agency or draft for the next two years. We all know team rosters stay exactly the same for three years. Right ?
What would our rating be if Rivers or Wilson opt out and the browns pay the draft picks to get one of them ?
Would love to know how this article is even worthy of a discussion. Without at least some speculation on future players, either through the draft or free agency than you are simply rating to rile.

As stated I am fully aware of the importance of the QB position. My opinion is not based on the importance or none importance of the QB. I'm talking about the ranking they did.
They stated they separated the categories but I see the major QB flaw we have in the rank. But they have us low ranked in all the other areas as well.
The LOS as UNITS are just as important as the QB...not individuals but as units.
I don't wish for our teams to be defined with that guy who can provide impact. Turn the game around??? I think you give them too much credit. Once in a while there is a guy on Defense who can possibly do that.
JJ Watt for instance LT of the Giants. Eagle and Packer Reggie White. A WR??? lol where and when? A TE???
Use to be RBs but the Vikings had the best for a while now and it hasn't done them any good.
I think Lynch makes that Offense go in Seattle.
I understand about the history of first round picks. Especially with our woeful Expansion history.
But this Regime has no HISTORY. 2014 is not up in where those two will stand. And to make the claim last year did not contribute so we HAVE TO ASSUME THIS YEAR WILL NOT EITHER...lol
I mean only due to the fact we have a pretty good OL the #19 pick will be Depth more than likely. So if that is so we failed?
I'm not set AGAINST high Impact guys. I just don't see the HIGH PRIORITY. Cause I know that does not get you the Championships...its creating an offense that can work like a machine in discipline where you can plug and play any Impact player with some skill and which of ours does not have SKILL just not that Elite top 5 skill. You don't need that. Cause so often those Elite top 5 skill guys just aren't playing in the Super Bowl.
But where am I against them. I have no problems in that plug and play having an elite stud...What I'm stating the important part is having a system that can be good regardless if its a Good Solid player or an Elite player.
I hope you get that.
Have a great 4th of July!

I can't find anything I truly disagree with Tab... The powers that be knocked the rankings down IMO by some of the moves they have made. The QB being one of them. 1st they drafted Johnny Then they let the only QB we have had that produced wins go for a career loser. If your in a Crap storm keep your umbrella even if it doesn't keep all the carp off you, then when you have a better umbrella and you know its a better umbrella toss the old one away. Anything short of that and you sir are an idiot. I have said this repeatedly it took us 8 years to get a QB with a winning record, and now we bring in a career loser and he is a lateral move. Talk about the used car salesmen pitch.....LOL Their ability to grade out and acquire QB talent to date is horrid, and that IMO separates the bad from the good. And that was a huge negative against this regime, and IMO it should be. And they graded out accordingly. Think about how the FO has gone about dealing with their QB issues then forecast it out, and if they don't do a huge 180 going forward I would say 3 years from now will need a new FO at the minimum. They can turn it around no doubt but you have to grade them for what they have done and their QB dealings are horrible, there just is no other conclusion to be made. How hard is the rest of the league laughing at us when they look at our QB spot??? I know this if it weren't the Browns and it was say the Bengals you would be busting a side too.... And Happy 4th to you and your wonderful family.....

If the Brows had game breakers like Josh Gordon eligible to play and would have another player like Sammy Watkins with our current QB's this team would resemble the Bengals.
The Browns would have a roster considered one of the most talented in the league but not capable of getting out of the first round of the playoffs.
But, if the Browns current roster had a QB like Andrew Luck this team would be considered a possible Super Bowl team.
The roster is fine. This team just needs to find out if Manziel can play or if they need to find a QB.
The 2 teams in the super bowl last year do not have what most consider game breaker/changers in their WR units. Actually player for player at WR the Browns are just as talented as the Pats and Seahawks.
The difference is that Brady is one of the best in the game and Wilson is above average with a very good run game and great defense.
If I was the Browns brass I would go all in in 2015 with Johnny Manziel if he succeeds we have our QB and will compete for a playoff spot. If he does not let him fail epic and get the #1 pick and draft best QB available.

I'm not going to anoint Cardale Jones based on a few games, but I get your point and understand it.

I really liked the way Cardale Jones looked in the championship game he reminded me of Big Ben, big accurate arm, can extend plays with his large body and get yardage with his legs if need be but very young and raw. That being said there is no guarantee that he will start for OSU next year and if that is the case he could easily fall in the draft to within our reach. Of course I no one knows how it will play out but I would love to see the browns take a chance on him if we get the opportunity.

Special-forces squads are built around the skills of the individual members. But no matter how good each member of the squad is, every mission comes down to one thing - how well they work together. Because in the end, you don’t need a hero to succeed in the field. You need a team.

With all the losing this team has had over the years, I can't believe there are still people who would rather go 0-16 just to get a high draft pick.

Posters are so incredulous when the national media and posters like myself question the Brown's talent. They are bozos. I am agenda driven. We have witnessed these scenarios hundreds....heck, thousands of times.
And each time, the bozos and guys like me are proven right, but we are the idiots and you guys are the smart guys.
Nice.

you talk as if you are the only person that has the right answer to everything football. You dismiss any opinion that disagrees with yours. You highlight partial quotes to try and be smug, yet you failed to answer the question. so again how is this article worthy of discussion ? If you base it on 3 years in the future, and don' take potential trades, free agent signings, and drafts into consideration ? Sounds like an agenda to me.
Just hope that's not to personal for you Vers.
OK everybody stop being optimistic about the Browns you are all asleep every year and the internet owner/gm/coach that knows more than those that actually learned their trade and get paid big money to do the job, says we will suck forever. Your first name wouldn't happen to be Pat would it?
Arrogance in it's finest form.

I don't have all the answers. I simply asked why you are discussing it if you don't think it is worth discussing.
It's not too personal for me. I'm used to those types of insults from the likes of you. It's what you guys do when you can't debate rationally.

NFL.com All-AFC North Team When it comes to highlighting top NFL talent, league-wide evaluations are the norm -- meaning some of the better players in each division are often overlooked. With his divisional all-star series, Dave Dameshek will be taking a deeper dive into the NFL's elite, putting together the best squad possible from each division -- continuing with the All-AFC North Team below. OFFENSE Quarterback: Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh Steelers Joe Flacco has the January bona fides, but Big Ben still casts the biggest shadow in the division. One interesting intersection between Roethlisberger and Flacco: Both are now 10-5 in the postseason. Running back: Le'Veon Bell, Pittsburgh Steelers The true value of the young, do-it-all runner (... and pass catcher ... and blocker) wasn't fully apparent to Steelers fans until they watched the Pittsburgh offense sputter in the playoffs without him. Wide receiver: Antonio Brown, Pittsburgh Steelers Being both a stats machine and a human highlight film is stunning stuff from the diminutive former sixth-round pick, who followed up a sublime 2013 (110 rec, 1,499 yards) with one of the five greatest WR seasons in NFL history (129 rec, 1,698 yards, 13 TDs). Wide receiver: A.J. Green, Cincinnati Bengals As it is, he's perennially among the top producers at his position. Imagine what he'd do if he played with a QB who could deliver him the ball downfield. Wide receiver: Steve Smith, Baltimore Ravens Another season like he had last year oughta put the finishing touches on his Hall of Fame résumé. Tight end: Heath Miller, Pittsburgh Steelers While he's no longer the devastating blocker he was in his prime, Miller still handles both of the position's primary responsibilities about as well as anyone in the league. Tackle: Joe Thomas, Cleveland Browns A few in-the-know types have told me they consider Thomas more steady than spectacular, but the five-time first-team All-Pro is undoubtedly the best of the bunch in the AFC North. Guard: Kevin Zeitler, Cincinnati Bengals The Bengals' regular presence in the playoff mix the last few seasons is owed to the ripening of several offensive linemen they've drafted over the last decade. The Wisconsin product is perhaps the best of that group. Play NFL Fantasy Football! Center: Maurkice Pouncey, Pittsburgh Steelers Some swoon too hard for Pouncey's ability to get to a defense's second level with rare speed -- I mean really, how often does this truly come into play week-to-week? -- but the athletic specimen was terrific in 2014 ... and is still just 25. Guard: Marshal Yanda, Baltimore Ravens Generally regarded as one of the best right guards in the business, Yanda was key to Justin Forsett's 2014 breakout. Now the question is whether Yanda will break out of Baltimore after his current contract expires following this season. Tackle: Andrew Whitworth, Cincinnati Bengals While his post-draft tweets indicate this is his final year in Cincy (where first- and second-round picks were spent on tackles), this mountainous human's play is still at a peak. DEFENSE Defensive end: Timmy Jernigan, Baltimore Ravens The Ravens were able to deal away longtime defensive centerpiece Haloti Ngata because of how promising this rookie Seminole looked last season (along with sophomore Brandon Williams). Defensive tackle: Geno Atkins, Cincinnati Bengals Even among his super-sized weight-lifting peers, Atkins has unusual strength ... and is plenty athletic, too. Now two seasons removed from ACL surgery, look for him to get back to his dominant 2012 form. Defensive end: Cam Heyward, Pittsburgh Steelers As was typical of many players in former defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau's scheme, Heyward took a couple years to find his way. Over the last two seasons, however, he's been a rock for a unit in transition. Outside linebacker: Elvis Dumervil, Baltimore Ravens Two years later, that whole fax thing is still weird -- and is still paying off for the Ravens, who got a franchise-record 17 sacks out of the 2014 All-Pro. Inside linebacker: Lawrence Timmons, Pittsburgh Steelers One of the Steelers' best, most consistent defensive performers over the last half decade. Wait ... did I type, "One of the Steelers' best ..."? I meant, "One of the NFL's best ..." Inside linebacker: C.J. Mosley, Baltimore Ravens As the Reed v. Polamalu debate fades into history, the first round of Mosley v. Shazier goes decisively to the Ravens' 2014 rookie star. Outside linebacker: Terrell Suggs, Baltimore Ravens He's recorded double-digit sacks in six of his dozen pro seasons, including an average of 11 over the last two. In other words, he's not done yet. Cornerback: Joe Haden, Cleveland Browns Haden taking his rightful place among the NFL's best corners is old news. With former Packer Tramon Williams and the highly pedigreed Justin Gilbert also in the mix, the Browns might have the league's best group at the position. Cornerback: Jimmy Smith, Baltimore Ravens In spite of injuries and a slow start to his pro career, Smith has nonetheless emerged as the physical shutdown corner Ozzie Newsome had in mind when he drafted the Colorado product in the first round of 2011. How confident are the Ravens in Smith? Four years, $48 million confident. Safety: Donte Whitner, Cleveland Browns He gets attention because of his mouth and vicious hits, but he's also been a consistent playmaker at all three of his NFL stops. Whitner made 106 tackles for Mike Pettine's bunch last year. Safety: Will Hill, Baltimore Ravens Alright, so neither Whitner nor this undrafted Florida intimidator will be of much use in coverage, but fair's fair: They're the two best safeties in the division. (Sorry, Tashaun Gipson, Reggie Nelson, Matt Elam and Mike Mitchell -- and better luck this year.) Hill, who's extremely effective on the field, just needs to stay out of trouble off it. SPECIAL TEAMS Returner: Antonio Brown, Pittsburgh Steelers With Jacoby Jones now in San Diego, this comes down to Brown and Pacman Jones. Let's go with the guy who wears the bumblebee uniform over the tiger-striped one. Kicker: Justin Tucker, Baltimore Ravens NFL Media analyst Brian Baldinger says Tucker might go down as the best placekicker ever. Punter: Sam Koch, Baltimore Ravens His 43.3 net punting average was tops in the NFL last season. Follow Dave Dameshek on Twitter @Dameshek. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000...lafc-north-team

I don't have all the answers. . Wow could have fooled me. You don't debate people with a differing opinion, you dismiss them with post like this. "Guys like you", really ? You hang your hat on an article that doesn't take into account ALL factors because it blends in well with your agenda. Tired of the chicken little approach from those that proclaim to be fans

I don't. But it's funny to see that you still can't answer the question.

The writer, Dave Dameshek, is a comedian by trade who grew up an avid Pittsburgh Steelers, Pirates, and Penguins fan.
Those facts may have contributed to his choices for this evaluation.

What question? Are you talking about why are we discussing it?
It's pretty simple. It's a message board where people come to discuss the Browns. A national article was posted by 3 guys from ESPN about each team's prognosis moving forward. The Browns have a few issues moving forward, such as:
--Not having a franchise qb. --Having most of their first round draft choices in recent years either be busts or disappointments. --Perhaps having the very WORST qb situation in the entire NFL. --Losing 3 of their Pro Bowl players from two years ago and having a fourth who apparently wants out of town. --They don't have even one big-time play maker on the offensive side of the ball.
Those are all legit points and worth discussing. I have no problem if you don't want to discuss this topic, but what gives you the right to decide if others discuss it?
Seriously, who the hell are you that you get to pick and choose what topics are decided? If you don't think the topic is worthy of discussion, shut your big mouth and go to another thread that meets your high standards.
It's pretty freaking simple and it's amazing that I had to freaking explain it to you.

So what you are saying is that we are the 30th team in the NFL for the next 3 years.
Hmmm care to make a bet that you often place out there. I can almost guarantee we will not be the 30th best team collectively for the next 3 season. Or for that matter any season in the next 3 seasons.
Last but not least...I hope I'm on the right thread...
Enjoy the 4th big guy!
Defense wins championships. Watson play your butt off! Go Browns! CHRIST HAS RISEN! GM Strong! & Stay safe everyone!

I like our owner, our coaches, and the team we are putting together. I think we win 11 games this year and almost hold home field through the playoffs.

I am no normal homer. I call it like I see it. I think we have a pretty darn good team. We are going to win some games.
