It has happened in the past. QB's that had mediocre at best careers and then one year it just clicks and they have a solid final few seasons. Gannon leaps to mind. Hell, Testaverde. Last couple seasons he was lighting people up. It's not impossilbe for Josh McCown to take to whatever offense we will be running this season. On the other hand it is FAR from being a given. Reality is the odds are very much against it. If Josh McCwon throws 25 touchdowns and 10 interceptions this season I WILL be calling him "Miracle Boy". smile Because it would absolutely be a miracle.

You are right in that he has more TDs than picks. However, almost every qb has that going for them. And notice that I said the words "for most of his career..."

I think he had one good year where he threw way more TDs than picks. The others were poor. Let me go check:

Okay: Ready? TDs first, Picks second:

0---2
5---6
11--10
9---11
0---0
10--11
0---0
0---0
2---4
0---0
13--1
11--14

That is freaking pathetic!!!

Let me find a few qbs who aren't very good and lets examine their numbers as a comparison. Be right back...

Alex Smith. Is he regarded as great? Good? Let's compare, shall we?

1---11 [Wow!}
16--16
2---4
18--12
14--10
17--5
23--7
18--6

See the difference? And no, I did not search a bunch of guys to pull that up. I picked a guy who is thought of as very average. Who else is average or below. How about Dalton? There are posters on here who think McCown is better. Let's take a look:

20--13
27--16
33--20
19--17

Wow!

Let's look at some decent qbs:

Matt Ryan:

16--11
22--14
28--9
29--12
32--14
26--17
28--14

Ryan Tannehill:

12--13
24--17
27--12

You see what I mean? And no guys, I am not scouring all the stats. I just pick a guy and post. Let me try the good ones:

Aaron Rodgers:

0---0
0---0
1---0
28--13
30--7
28--11
45--6 [are you kidding me?]
39--8 [crappy year...lol]
17--6
38--5

Tom Brady:

0---0
18--12
28--14
23--12
28--14
26--14
24--12
50--8 [Holy Batman]
0---02
28--13
36--4 [That's even better]
39--12 [Down year...LOL]
34--8
25--11
33--9

I'd say all of those stats are revealing. Spirit, my point is that McCown's TD to Interception ratio is really poor. I encourage other posters to try and prove me wrong on this one. Don't just post one or two guys. Post several, like I did and prove to me that Josh McCown's TD/Int ratio isn't poor.

Anyone who thinks McCown can be good is living in a dream world. He has been in the league since 2002 and has never been good (except for a five game stretch in 2013).

Josh McCown

The best we can hope for from McCown is that he isn't losing games for us the way Hoyer was last year.

No offense taken. Just stating my observations that Miami game....stuff you don't get to see on TV. It seemed like Cameron Wake was in the backfield every play, a few times untouched running between Cousins and Schwartz? who looked at each other dumbfounded.

Is that how Josh is viewed in the NFL overall? Is that why Josh has been viewed as backup quality?

If that is/was the knock on him, playing behind our Oline might allow the guy to play his best football. But make no mistake, Josh will get hit and some teams may try to lay a late lick on him, just to try to rattle him.

Thanks to those who gave me their honest opinion of the book on McCown. McCown did not play against the Browns when Tampa came to Cleveland in early Nov last season. Like I said, I don't believe I have ever watched him play.

I'm sure the rest of the NFL is aware of McCown's tendencies and will do their best to lay some hits on him. Also, some have emphasized the need for our Oline to "keep McCown clean". But let's not be unrealistic...McCown will get hit and will get sacked, even playing behind our Oline, which ranked 13th in the NFL in sacks giving up, with 31 sacks in 2014.

With O'Connell as QB coach, DeFillippo as OC and Pettine also involved with the offense, McCown is going to have "better coaching" than he had last season, when Tampa lost their OC before the regular season, due to health concerns.

IMO, McCown is in a good situation here in Cleveland and hopefully he will respond and play the best football of his career.

Where do you get questioning loyalty...get off the high horse Vers...I don't do agenda posting like you.

90% of everything to you comes down to Banner vs Farmer.

How dare you call MY OPINION CRAP cause it doesn't comply with your Agenda or posts. You can get all flamingmad if you wish. But point blank you think you are being the Sheriff or something. But you object to my positive posts...more so than I object to your Negative ones.

Again I will apologize to you if I have high prospects to our season and our players. Sorry that offends you so.

And what I said at the end of that post was tongue in cheek (you say snarky so I guess that is what it has to be right...you control all posts)

Not to Pit that was directed to YOU, or anyone who it possibly applies to but the fact...which you make up btw the post was not to PIT...it was to MAC.

I've been branded by YOU and others as a HOMER...you do realize you are taking INSULT for bringing HOPE to Browns fans. What an absurd outlook you have that this OFFENDS you so much. Apologies that you have that much Guilt I guess in your hate posts that a remark about giving fans HOPE is offensive.

I'll talk football with you but not this garbage stuff...now you will call me a drama queen and point the finger to me...like most bullies do. Yeah its me bullying Posters...says the king of bullies... smh

McCown:
177 Attempts for 833 yards
12.6 Y/G
4.7 Y/Per Rush
7 TD's

TRich:
614 Attempts for 2032 yards
12.6 Y/G
3.3 Y/Per Rush
17 TD's

So..TRich is better!!! NA na NanAna... nanner

I will admit I'm a homer too. I've been a homer ever since I began rooting for the Browns at 10 years old. I want every player, coach etc. to do well. Vers, I have to say when you stick to talking football I like reading your posts. You are knowledgeable and other posters can learn from this. I will also say you are not the only one. There are other good posters too.

Not sure why this has always stuck in my mind, when it comes to QB's and trying to speculate their performance before a season even starts.

I think Of John Elway in the early 90's when he and Dan Reeves were kind of in a tense conflict over the firing of Mike Shanahan.

I'm thinking it was like "92" Elway went 8-8 and after that season Reeves was let go.. and then Elway picked his game up again.. of course with the help of Terrell Davis..

So to get to my point I always felt that a QB had to be in the perfect situation to succeed. The right
coordinator a good run game help from the line..

If Pettine can put a QB in that same situation to succeed we may not have a bad season..

i dunno man.

i mean i have hope simply because i'm a fan. but if you look at our squad. we have decent WR. we have ok TE. we have good Rb's, and a boss ass O Line.

but i look at the QB spot and i'm like.....ugh.

I rather start Pryor at QB.

From some of the things I have seen from Pryor on his QB abilities. I think even he is glad he's not in that position any longer.

So what do we think it was that made McCown have that one great stretch? Was it Trestman? Was it Marshall, Jeffrey, and Bennett? Pure luck? That year was supposedly the one year the Bears had a good line, but they still weren't great. Any ideas? Is it something we can take advantage of or replicate here?

I really think he just had a lucky stretch with awesome receivers. Derek Anderson had an entire season of that.

He had Evans, Jackson, and ASJ in Tampa, which is pretty close to Marshall, Jeffrey, and Bennett... and he had more games there. But he didn't have any of the same luck? I think it's gotta be more than that.

I misspoke. What I should have said was that he was in a bubble of very good offensive players. Marshall, Jeffery, Bennett, Forte, and as you said the offensive line was pretty good too.

I have a hard time believing McCown is good (or even average) after five games that he played very well. We have mountains of evidence to show he is bad.

He also had no offensive coordinator, as Jeff Tedford, who was hired to be OC, took ill before the season, and missed the whole year. His place was taken by a straight out of college QB coach, Marcus Arroyo, who had never played, or coached, in the NFL before. Arroyo reportedly had no idea how to put together an NFL gameplan, or how to design/call plays in the NFL. This was not his fault, as that was not the job he was hired to do ..... but it still made like extremely difficult for the offense.

I am not willing to say that this was the only reason that McCown struggled, but I would bet that it played a large part in the struggles of the offense as a whole.

I am curious to see how the preseason plays out. Maybe Manziel beats out McCown. Who knows? Stranger things have definitely happened.

McCown was brought in to make Manziel better. Not only was McCown willing to teach him, he probably didn't care as much about the competition and but he was more of a vet who knows his role. The Browns can afford McCown and it passes the scratch and sniff test to get JFF going.

Hopefully, Manziel grows under McCown's wings in the next few months and cna take over the starting spot after the half way point.

Hunter + Dart = This is the way.
