Speaking of The Big Show: The Julio Jones trade worked out for the Falcons while the Browns screwed up everythingThere were high expectations heaped on Julio Jones when the Atlanta Falcons traded away a boatload of draft picks in the 2011 NFL Draft to move up from No. 27 in the order to No. 6 so they could select Jones. Big, bold trades have happened in the past like the Jacksonville Jaguars trading up from No. 26 to No. 8 for Derrick Harvey, or the Saints trading away every pick they had in the 1999 NFL Draft to move from No. 12 to No. 5 for Ricky Williams. Atlanta's move of 21 spots was just a little bit bigger and little bit bolder than any other, and has set the precedent for going all in on one player. The Falcons sold out two years' worth of valuable draft picks for Jones and their investment in the receiver on Saturday shows that, four years later, they still believe in the trade they made. The Falcons got their man All in all, the Falcons sent the Browns a first-round pick (No. 27), a second-round pick (No. 59) and a fourth-round pick (No. 124) in 2011, and also chipped in the No. 1 pick in 2012 (No. 22) and their No. 4 pick in 2012 (No. 118). SIGN UP FOR OUR NFL NEWSLETTER Get all kinds of NFL stories, rumors, game coverage, and inane comments from the NFL media in your inbox every day. Email: All for one player. Was it worth it? "Absolutely," said Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff earlier this year. And how can you argue with him? No player in Falcons franchise history has racked up more receiving yardage in a single season than Jones did in 2014 with 1,593. He's also one of four players to ever finish a season with more than 100 receptions for the team. The Falcons proved on Saturday how valuable they consider Jones, giving him a new five-year, $71.25 million deal that makes him the second-highest paid receiver in the NFL. The $47 million guaranteed for Jones trails only the $53.25 million that the Detroit Lions gave Calvin Johnson in 2012. The Browns didn't get much at all How did the Browns fare on their end of the trade? Well ... not so hot. The first-round pick in 2011 was used to trade up and select defensive tackle Phil Taylor, the only player from the trade who's still in Cleveland. The next three picks were used on Greg Little, Owen Marecic and Brandon Weeden, while the fourth-round selection in 2012 was sent in the package deal that landed the Browns Trent Richardson. Ouch. Richardson was eventually dealt to the Indianapolis Colts for a first-round pick, so the Browns recouped some of his value, but that pick was used on Johnny Manziel, who has been less-than-stellar early in his career. Considering the Browns' current situation at wide receiver will not feature Josh Gordon in 2015 and the team's hopes will rest on Dwayne Bowe carrying the group, Julio Jones would have made for a nice addition, in hindsight. Mission accomplished comes with drawbacks Things aren't necessarily all sunshine and roses for the Falcons, though. Dimitroff is right that the team "absolutely" came away with a win by taking Jones, but one of the trade-offs that comes with trading five high-value draft picks for just one is that it can leave holes in the roster unfilled. After 23 wins in the first two seasons with Jones on the team and two trips to the postseason, the wheels fell off and the Falcons have just 10 wins in the last two years. Jones is already one of the best receivers in Falcons history, so there's no reason Dimitroff should be regretful, but four more picks to work with, including first- and second-round selections could have helped the Falcons from falling from grace. Or the Falcons could have made the same picks the Browns did and they'd be much worse off without Jones. So goes the NFL Draft. http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2015/8/30/9164545/julio-jones-falcons-browns-2011-draft-trade H and H were morons! Regime War?

this reply has the sole intentions of rubbing it in to those that were pimping using 3 first round picks to trade up for RG3 and ripping me for wanting Tannehill with our #4 overall pick. Thats right folks, I was right and you were wrong I didn't want either, so that puts me at even. I'll take that. YTown, you have some explaining to do . . . I have long ago owned up to that entire misbegotten draft.

The trade was never the problem, it was who we took with the picks.

The trade was never the problem, it was who we took with the picks. I agree w this. I would make that trade every time, just like I would the Buffalo/Sammy Watkins trade. It's what they did with those picks that makes them morons. If I sell a 1975 Dodge Dart for $100,000 and then invest that in Greek stocks and lose it all ... you can't say I was an idiot for selling the car. I was idiot for other reasons.

The trade was a good trade for what we got for just a WR. To try and build a team with a lot of needs. The investments we made didn't become those impact players we were looking for.
Well on a team with Continuity of system and legit Franchise QB. Julio Jones first two seasons had playoff bound success although their won loss from the 2 seasons before was just an improvement of ONE GAME.
The last two seasons. 4-12 and 6-10 While us with both those seasons being First year new O new D. Chud and then Petting. We were 4-12 and 7-9 but wait - I thought we would have a Championship in our sites if only we had Julio Jones...lol
Don't get me wrong Jones has done everything that was expected of him. More important than that WR is a Defense - a flow on the Offense no need for an Elite WR.
But just how woeful are we for not taking Jones when the team that did...was worse than we were the last two seasons?
Just making my point. What Atlanta needed was an OL and a DL. Something we got and they don't. Give us Matt Ryan with our WRs and I betcha we are a playoff team. Again Elite WR is nice if we got the other bases covered. But to build a team? Doesn't help much.

Just want to add a comment about the Browns situation concerning the QB position.
...imo, with the addition of DeFillipo (oc) and Connor (qb coach), for the first time since I can remember, the Browns have assembled a coaching staff capable of teaching and developing QB prospects.
They have definitely helped McCown and Manziel in just one training camp. If the Browns add a QB prospect with raw talent, they might be able to develop a future starter.
Note...by raw talent, I'm talking about a late round pick or a free agent pickup.
The key for the Browns is keeping Flip and Connor together long enough to do the job..."coaching continuity" is the key.

I think Manziel pulling his head outta his rear helped Manziel in just one training camp.
I do think since Kevin is a little younger, he relates to the players and etc better. Having an OC who also coached that Qb position I can also see as being a benefit.

Wow, O'Connor hasn't even been a coach in the NFL until now. DeFilipo attempting his first gig as OC. Isn't this getting a little ahead of ourselves? Heck, O'Neil is only going into his second year solo. I would not call him a good developer and teacher. I'll give you, so far, they all seemed like a good fit. I really like seeing these two coordinators hang around for three or four years.

Imagine if I would have made that statement had Banner hired those guys. The board would have been blown up w/replies to tell me how stupid I was. But yeah, most of the board is objective.........

Eagles Rumors: Philadelphia interested in Robert Griffin III if Washington Redskins cut him By Brandon Lee Gowton @BrandonGowton on Sep 1, 2015, 8:06p 122 Brad Mills-USA TODAY Sports link Not everyone might be excited about the prospect of Robert Griffin III to the Philadelphia Eagles, but according to one report it just might happen. Mike Freeman of Bleacher Report reports the Eagles are one of three teams who could be interested in Griffin if Washington releases him. The other two teams mentioned by Freeman: the Cleveland Browns and the Dallas Cowboys. Here's what Freeman had to say. "The most important thing you need to know about Robert Griffin III — it’s THE thing — the most important thing is that there are a lot of teams interested in him. They don’t necessarily want to trade for him. They want to see if Washington cuts him. And if they cut him, you will see teams go after him. And from what I hear from around the league, teams around the league, look for three big teams to emerge if that happens. [...] The second team, Philadelphia Eagles. Chip Kelly thinks he can make any quarterback into Joe Montana. [Philadelphia] is a natural fit there as well." OK, so that reasoning is kind of weird, but Freeman isn't the first person to suggest Kelly could have interest in Griffin. Kelly had very high praise for Griffin last season. On one hand, Griffin would be great for the Eagles because he'd be in a humbling situation. He wouldn't have to worry about starting or even being the backup. He'd be able to rehab his career as the third string quarterback behind Sam Bradford and Mark Sanchez. Griffin would be an upgrade on the likes of Tim Tebow and Matt Barkley. He might be a reclamation project worth taking a no-risk flyer on. On the other hand, Griffin probably doesn't want to go somewhere where he's going to be the third string guy. And while it seems like Washington is bound to move on from Grififn, there's still no guarantee he's going to be cut at this point. It's easy to say something like Griffin to Philadelphia will never happen ... and that may very well be true. But then again, who thought Chip Kelly was going to sign Tim freaking Tebow? That's not to compare Griffin and Tebow as much as it is to say anything's possible with Kelly. Expect the unexpected. In any case, it will be interesting to see where Griffin lands if/when Washington finally gives up on him. He's fallen so far from the special player he once used to be.

If the Eagles get RGIII, we should be on the phone with them trying to get Sanchez. Let me be clear, Sanchez is not good. At all. But he is definitely better than Josh McCown.

It pains me to say this, but I can get on board with that. Due to our QB play of late, if we pursue Sanchez I will be OK with that. And I am not OK with me being OK with that.

Mike Freeman makes stuff up all the time. He's the same one that tweeted "Welcome to Cleveland, Mike Glennon" or something like that a couple weeks before we signed McCown.

You did kind of pull that one line out of my post..there was more.....imo, with the addition of DeFillipo (oc) and Connor (qb coach), for the first time since I can remember, the Browns have assembled a coaching staff capable of teaching and developing QB prospects.

I'm going to stand by my "opinion", that Flip and O'Connell, if they remain together long enough, they might be able to develop a future starter for the Browns.
I might be early with my comment..but I believe Pettine hired guys he felt were capable of teaching and developing talent.
Like I said, based on early results, it looks as though Manziel and McCown are showing improvement over last year's performances.
It is JMHO...mac

Although Conner has never had a QB coach position in the NFL - he has 1. Been in the NFL long enough to know what is needed. 2. He falls under the adage those who cannot do...Teach as his NFL career went no where due to a lack of talent. 3. He has YEARS under his belt as a private tutor for NFL PROSPECTS to tune their technique to what the NFL needs.
4. Isn't that exactly what we want from our QB Coach. We don't need strategy from him. We need INSTRUCTION from him and that happened to be his specialty of course we have to see a series of successes in his body of work. I think Manziel has shown improvement and we can assume it is with the helping hand of Conner.
I think he's a great addition.
RG3...well I find it interesting that nobody talked about the fact that we were named as ONE of 3 that would be interested. Eagles, Browns & Dallas.
If we brought him here...let him heal for a year, get that pocket tutoring from Conner. Have him and Manziel duke it out next season.
Some might think he and Manziel are the same product but far from the case. RG3 has more speed (even with the surgeries) and a stronger arm. Manziel is more of a natural leader that all can rally behind and be galvanized. Right now all be it 4 months Manziel is proving that he is coach able and willing. Don't know about RG3.
Eagles...if Bradford goes down - they are screwed. Bradford is so far ahead of the other QBs...Chip isn't making him good he was good just ask BTTB
Odd are in that offense, he is going to get hit and hit alot. Honestly the perfect QB is probably Bortles for that O or a young Big Ben (who Bortles reminds me of).

I would not be opposed to giving RG3 a shot playing behind our O-line. He might not feel the need to scramble so much =)

EO..I researched both Flip and O'Connell..and that is part of the reason I'm so positive and hopeful that the Browns can keep these guys together, and let them do what they do...teach and develop QB talent.

Well Joe aint getting any younger so we better get a real QB in here sooner rather than later. I don't see any decent ones coming up in the draft next season. There are some decent prospects for project QB's like Cardell from ohio state but none that don't have some issues with their game. So I figure RG3 had at least one good season so eh why not.

Huh? Sorry you lost me on that evaluation of the QB class. Manziel still is our best chance of getting a Franchise QB here. Lets hope that elbow thing goes away and he will start throwing next Tuesday.

I really don't want to see RG3 come here, it would be a huge distraction to the team. The guy has had drama under 2 coaching staffs and his play has not progressed but regressed, he is appearing to be uncoachable. At least Manziel has for the few preseason games anyway shown to have taken steps toward learning his craft and altering his play to become a successful nfl quarterback. But the elbow thing sucks, he lost much needed reps to continue his development.

RG3 needs to go somewhere where he doesnt have to play for 2 years. Go to the saints and learn to play behind Brees. That would be the best situation for him.

If he's released and picked up with the notion of starting him, I don't think RGIII would be able to take the next step everyone is and has been waiting for him to do.

Just one question on the coach killer thing.
Possibly the Redskins will be picking in the top 10 again when all is said and done. If Gruden who stuck with Cousins gets fired would Cousins be the coach killer or RG3?
jmh?

I just wonder how many coaches get the finger pointed at them with RG3 on the roster before fans start to understand where the problem is.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Not a redskin fan...just like as Browns fans we know who farted in the locker room we go so intense in this. But I don't know what has gone on.
One coach got fired.
This one has benched him...if he becomes a cancer now on the bench you can expect him to be released. Nobody will trade for him - with one year left and a big time hit.
Baylor, I think he put his coach and the program on the map. The Shanahan regime was in deep poopy when they drafted RG3 hoping he would Save them not kill them and he actually did save them in 2012.
I got to believe he definitely has NOT helped the program as of late - not with all these teammates ragging on him. I just don't like to have a strong opinion on the kid one way or another without knowing the facts.
All I do know is he came out with a bang...got seriously hurt...stayed playing and was a Coach Savior not killer. Still played when it was apparent his leg was literally hanging by a thread.
Never has been the same since, mentally and physically.
that is all I know.

that's a good point.
i think that year if RG3 doesn't have as good rookie season, the shanny's might've got the axe. so i think he definitely saved them for at least one more season.

Oh it's just my opinion. Part of it is based on what his team mates say about him.
IMO, if your #1 QB has zero respect from the players on the team, he can't be a leader, will never have the teams support so they will never be a winning team.
That has to kill coaches.

The Shanahans and Gruden told him to do it.

Looked to me like in his first year, they designed an offense around his strengths and he looked really good. Late in the year he got hurt, they panicked and tried to make him into a pure pocket passer in one off-season and he struggled and got hurt again and has been hurt ever since...

Well let's see, according to the math so far, people say the Shanahan's were bafoons, Gruden is a bafoon..... and the beat goes on.

I haven't followed him that close, no. I just have to believe when following RG3, the things he says, the tweet he liked and his general attitude, that at some point people need to admit he plays a big part of it even if others add to the mess.
