Think of it this way, you are getting paid to play the lottery. If you win (by that I mean "make the final roster") you are gonna get league minimum which isn't exactly chump change.

Speaking of which, what is Minimum now.. Last time I looked it was over 400K a year. That was a few years ago, I'm sure it's gone up.

Pretty shocked about this, especially after the Kitchen release. Don't think its a good move at all. Good luck, Phil.

Wow. Must have something to do with his health... I was looking forward to having him in there with Shelton on occasion and destroying the backfield. Wonder WTF... Meder maybe?

Another blown draft pick by Heckert.
I can't believe he considered "great" by some on here.
He barely made dominant plays and was so over rated

I think both will find themselves on a roster fairly quickly. Taylor was a huge surprise! I guess the staff means business.

Why I know Phil Taylor has been very disappointing...I felt this could be a bounce back year with Shelton getting alot of attention and Phil would be better in a smaller role or in spurts...Makes no sense since we didn't save money... Just kept his salary and cut him...Maybe he couldn't pass a physical and like others stated above me...has to be injury related or he has a suspension coming up...I was looking to great Dline depth... Well hopefully we keep Winn now.

http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2015/8/30/9164545/julio-jones-falcons-browns-2011-draft-trade

So we traded Julio and got back picks that turned into Phil Taylor, Greg Little, Owen Marecic and Brandon Weeden. The last pick was used to upgrade our first rounder to get Trent Richardson.

Uggh, I think a chimp throwing darts at a draft guide would have a better track record than our scouting department.

Wow...I thought we could count on one surprise move - guess this was it. an Eye opener.

Thought Coons was winning the kicking battle as Spears got cut.

Now we terminated Contract does that mean we could sign him if we want later to a different contract?

Sheldon is good and a real 3/4 NT. HUGHES and I have no problem going with Quick 300 lbers. Wonder if Winn is safe now? Just thinking out loud.

[color:#FFCC33][/color]Julio Jones...who cares about Julio Jones? Its a different regime all we need to care about is this regimes build up. We got a real NT for the 3/4 in Shelton which makes him obsolete. I'm curious on who we are going to keep instead of Taylor. Friggen 2011 who cares that is in the past. And guess what Jones would not have made us any better. saywhat

You need 3 NTs to run the 3/4, two are definitely in the rotation, and a third in case of injury. Who do we have now?

man phil taylor gone?

guess we should've drafted julio jones.

i mean, whats the point of "winning the draft" and loading up on picks when most of them end up busting anyway?

say what y'all want, at least Atlanta has been to the playoffs.

If they cut him today, then it's clear they likely shopped him too with no one interested. Big Phil, I like the man, but yeah... I'm beyond okay with just moving on with the younger talents on the d-line. I guess I kind of don't understand why Kitchen was released now?

Murder Leg ended up being the odd man out in that two-way battle for kicker. Coons or someone off the street?

jc...

There has to be a will to play on the part of the player. In Taylor's situation, IMO, he did not appear to have the desire to "put out".

I believe the coaches sensed it and decided it was best to let him go. The chances of him playing ...well the team just could not count on the guy..it seemed that Taylor was simply going through the motions, waiting to get to that big contract moment.

There is no way to make a player "want to play".

Thank goodness, Shelton is the exact opposite and we need more like him.

you called phil taylor a real NT when we drafted him too.

Tab, it's been a frustrating 15 years no matter who's been in charge. I believe everyone will consider these things in the past once we see a turn around.

As long as these players have been and are effecting the present, most fans won't put them in the past.

I probably don't see the loss of Taylor as shocking as some do. We needed more speed and agility and dependability at NT than Taylor provided. We got that in Shelton.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

He acknowledged that he suffered from soreness and tightness in this elbow last year as a rookie too.

Never heard this spoken before? Can you elaborate. Actually you need ONE SPECIAL TALENT at the NT for a 3/4 they are a rare breed and not easily found. Never heard of 3...just somebody to give him a blow...like if Wilfork needed a blow.

What people forget the regime that drafted Taylor played a 4-3 defense Taylor just didn't fit and we wanted to keep somebody else MEDER? WINN. We were not going to pay Taylor next year so his injuries didn't warrant a roster spot - my educated guesses.

It seems as though we are defying all odds by the amount of blown first round draft picks since '99.

Liked him. I will miss him. Never struck me as frantic to play. Can't see him as an all-downs player going forward. Hoped he would pair with Shelton maybe. Thanks for your efforts here. Good luck.

4. Hybrid scheme: For a team running a 3-4 defense, the Browns used a lot of four-man fronts on Saturday. By my count, the Browns lined up with four down linemen on 24 of 29 defensive plays in the first half. Paul Kruger played with his hand in the dirt for much of the first half, rushing the quarterback on most passing downs.

http://www.dawgsbynature.com/2015/8/29/9226661/browns-vs-bucs-7-talking-points

people seam to think all because we are called a 3/4 defense thats all we do. its more like the pats i think. even last year if i recall right we were in the base 3/4 like 30% of the time?

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."

he's missed 22 games our of 64 games in 4 years. He's big bucks and not as productive as he should be for that money.

My guess, it's both health and production.

Taylor has a roughly $5 million/year contract that was guaranteed.
If he did indeed ask to be released. And as per clevesteve's post his contract was terminated. Does that mean he he gave up that guaranteed money to be released?

If so good move on our part. We'll see if it was a good move on his.

I disagree w/so many assessments on Taylor and Kitchen.

I won't miss Phil Taylor. Thought you guys overrated him. He didn't ever get himself into shape. Missed too many workouts, practices, and games. Got winded so quick. Got injured. The latter two things were due to his poor conditioning habits. Glad he's gone.

I will miss Kitchen. I completely disagree w/the take that he was just a big body. What? Our run defense was better when he was in than when Phil was in. The guy was pretty stout and had a good motor. I'm going to miss him. I hope we resign him.

Btw---I think H and H were a complete disaster and set this team backs years and years.
