Like 31 other teams, the Browns are busy trimming their roster and exploring options to bolster it through the weekend as teams explore trades and rosters are trimmed to 53.
The work won’t end across the league after the initial round of waiver claims and practice squad additions this weekend, but it will end for Browns general manager Ray Farmer for 30 days, starting at 12:01 a.m. Sept. 7.
That’s when Farmer begins serving a 30-day suspension for breaking the NFL’s rules on gameday communication last year. It’s hard to call what Farmer did a “scandal” — and it’s even worse to call it TextGate — but Farmer admitted to sending texts to the sideline during games last season. He later cooperated with the NFL by turning over his phone during the investigation, unlike some other guy who’s been in the news lately.
Friday, Browns coach Mike Pettine told reporters on a conference call that the team would release a statement on Saturday announcing who will serve as acting general manager during Farmer’s absence. The acting GM will likely be either Bill Kuharich, who came to the team when Farmer was hired and carries the title of executive chief of staff, or Morocco Brown, the team’s vice president of player personnel.
We’re talking about the Browns, though, so anybody from the team president to a guy on the sidewalk or even Sonny Weaver could end up with the job while Farmer serves his suspension.

Maybe this year, though, they'll have commercials about deflating balls. Same cast, same watery eyes. Speechless. Actually SNL should do a skit to that effect.

I really feel for a vast majority of last year that Shanny was our off season FA MVP...haven't seen our team move the ball like that in awhile...I can't say I have faith in Flip...I wouldn't be surprised if some of our coordinators are fired this year, Feel bad for Pettine but I think O'Neil is wack...and sadly enough we will see about Flip
How so? Did you not say last year Browns were in dire straits since Shanahan wasn't under Daddy's guidance? If I'm not mistaken, you also stated Haslam should have hired Daddy Shanahan over complete unknown Pettine.
O'Neil is running Pettine's defense. If he sucks, that means Pettine sucks as well.
Not so sure about that. It was reported that Pettine was going to spend a lot of time in the offensive room this year.
All I do know is we better play a damned sight better than last year on both sides of the ball. Otherwise, we might well be looking for a new GM and HC next year. I don't see Haslam as being an overly patient man. Could be wrong, perhaps these guys have him convinced of their greatness.... but I have a feeling if we slide back to the putrid football of the past, Haslam will reboot again.

You must have me confused with someone else. I never said any such thing man I loved the Shanahan hire. I would have had him on the short list for HEAD coach. I think he's a young developing star. Perhaps a few years too soon for the HC job, but he will probably get a shot at it one day... I think the job he did last year, with the tools he had to work with, was a really something special. 16 rushing touchdowns! I liked that!
I think losing Kyle, changing systems yet again, and giving the job to a ROOKIE coordinator wasn't the most prudent of moves. Flip better be the best OC we've had in ages or heads are going to roll.....
