CANTON TWP. The 2007 Browns are currently undefeated.

Given that and Romeo Crennel's natural optimism, the Hall of Fame Luncheon Club got a super-sized serving of joviality in the season's last Monday sitting in Four Winds restaurant.

Crennel and a crowd of 300 laughed off a January report saying it was 50-50 he'd be back coming off a 4-12 year.

"I'm here to tell you I won the coin toss,'' he said.

It's no joke Crennel is on the hot seat, needing to satisfy owner Randy Lerner that he's the man with the plan, not just groping at hope.

The man is in an odd spot, armed with free agents and draft picks who have stirred buzz, but dealing as much in questions as in answers.

Reaction to a question about whether Cleveland pursued wideout Randy Moss was telling. The moment Crennel said part of the reason was the Browns have Braylon Edwards, some in the audience let out sarcastic chuckles.

Unflappable, Crennel moved on without embarrassing Edwards, who caught 61 passes and dropped a few in '06.

"I think he has matured some,'' Crennel said. "The maturation process is ongoing for all of us.

He's gonna have to be a good solid sound football player. If he can do that, I think he lives up to being a No. 3 overall pick.''

In a Sirius radio interview last week, Edwards, 24, said of his 59-year-old head coach, "This is the year that you can look and assess his game. This is the year that we'll come out of the shadows. And I don't believe an 8-8 year is successful.''

Edwards went on:

"We're in a situation where 8-8, to me, is not a success ... I believe 10-6 is a success."

On Monday, Crennel smiled and said, "I'll have to talk to Braylon and see where he's coming from with that."

Addressing a question about where his team is going in '07, Crennel said: "We hope to give you some results. But as I said last year, I don't make predictions."

In detailing the long version of "one game at a time,'' he noted the season opener is at home against Pittsburgh.

"That's the one we're all focused on," he said. "We're gonna try our dangdest to get that one."

THE QUARTERBACK ISSUE

Who gets to pass into Pittsburgh's secondary? Might RouÕd 1 pick Brady Quinn be the Brown's sixth No. 1 quarterback in as many years, following Tim Couch, Kelly Holcomb, Jeff Garcia, Trent Dilfer and Charlie Frye?

"Last year," Crennel said, "everyone was clamoring for Charlie. All of a sudden, Brady Quinn comes along and it's, 'Let's go Brady, let's go Brady.' We have to deal with that.

"Charlie has a leg up. I will give him the benefit of the doubt, but I'll also give Brady and (Derek) Anderson the opportunity to show what they can do. It puts pressure on the coaches to make a decision as quickly as possible, because the guy you choose needs to get to work.

"The longer we let it drag out, the more the danger of spreading the reps too thin."

This places extra weight on so-called "OTAs" (organized team activities), which amount to the spring practices that will unfold between now and June minicamp.

Even if Quinn is the MVP of OTAs, there could be a nasty snag if he holds out for more than a few days of training camp. He is allowed - and wants - to take part in OTAs. But after summer break, he can't get in training camp until he signs a contract.

"In this business," Crennel said, "everybody waits until the last minute, because they feel like they have the most leverage at that time."

OTAs AND OTs

Crennel says Joe Thomas will have to beat out Kevin Shaffer for the left tackle job, but he is obviously pumped up about the rookie No. 3 pick.

"Joe has tremendous ability, tremendous size and a positive, no-nonsense attitude," Crennel said. "He's level headed. You will like him. I think he's going to fit in very well.''

Crennel had issues at both tackle spots in 2006, with Shaffer struggling to live up to a fat free agency contract, and right tackle Ryan Tucker battling psychological issues.

Now he sees Thomas and Shaffer sharpening each other and ensuring depth. He sounds more and more like a coach counting on a return to form from Tucker.

"He's running and lifting," Crennel said. "He's in a good frame of mind. You talk to him and he's excited about coming back to play. We're excited about having him back. He's a good right tackle."

Center is less settled. When Crennel was asked if LeCharles Bentley will ever play again, he said, "We're not exactly sure yet." He's still awaiting word on whether Bentley will elect to have follow-up surgery after missing 2006 with a torn patellar tendon.

EXTRA POINTS

Other nuggets from Crennel:

¥ What will happen with veteran cornerback Gary Baxter in his bid to recover from patellar tendon surgery on both knees? Can he hold off rookie Round 2 pick Eric Wright? "When Baxter's ready, we'll put him on the field and see where he is and how he compares," Crennel said. "That's what you do. You put 'em out there and let 'em compete, and then we'll see who's the best."

¥ Has Crennel seen rookie cornerbacks thrive? "Rookies are gonna make some mistakes," he said. "I don't care which rookie it is. You have to determine if you can live with his mistakes. If he's so much better than what you have, you live with his mistakes."

¥ Crennel said Wright looked "smooth and confident" in rookie minicamp and "has something to prove." The guess is the '07 Browns will be living with Wright's mistakes.

¥ Tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. "might not be ready until training camp,'' coming off microfracture knee surgery. Can Winslow be the big-play threat he was in college? "The rehab will have an impact on that," Crennel said.

I guess I was wrong, he isn't arrogant, selfish and an attention whore.

10-6 GMAFB.....he sounds more like a childish message boarder than a pro football player.

I'm amused. I've watched Braylon since his first game in college, and the fact he can aggitate so many people cracks me up.

I seriously don't get the Braylon bashers... apparently some people would rather have a guy who sees glaring problems with teammates (including himself) and the system, but who sits around refusing to say a peep while working his butt off as the team fails to meet its low expectations (and being complacent with it).

He got too competitive and lashed out at the wrong time. He didn't back things up with his play at times. That was last year. This is a different season. What's wrong with trying to reform yourself while keeping a competitive fire burning?

Can we shift the subject here?

I think it'll be interesting to see if Wright starts at CB in the preseason opposite Bodden. I'm really anxious to see how our CB's play out this season.

You can keep the fire burning while keeping your name out of the papers.

All I ask is that he shows us, then talks. Not the other way around.

This is only gonna get worse for him is he doesn't go 1,000 9 TD's this year.

All that mouth better be worth something this year. If he goes out and gets hurt, or under performs, it's gonna get ugly.

That's right,he should sound more like the head coach.A 6-10 record would be ok,as long he saw progress.
This will be year three. If a winning record isn't achieved, then it would be time to re-evaluate,from the owner all the way down to the water boy.

Well, allow me to attempt to turn it in another direction...

From the mini-camp interviews, it sounds like Quinn wants to be here for everything, including all of the training camp practices, but I think his contract talks are gonna be sticky, especially with Condon as his agent. I think this will give Charlie the definite green light to be our starter, which most intelligent fans would agree is the right thing. My only concern is if Quinn outshines Chuck in OTAs but then misses part of camp, resulting in Frye being the starter by default more or less. I don't know. I guess we'll just have to cross that bridge when we come to it but I could see a definite QB controversy developing. My biggest fear is the fans who are going to immediately throw Charlie under the bus as soon as he makes one bad decision. Like RAC said, everyone is clamoring for Brady and he hasn't even put on pads yet.

This struck me as a departure from his normal approach to sitting rookies. I think Crennel is going to push these youngsters to grow up real quick, as he is counting on their maturation and success to save his job. (And if he has to sacrifice Braylon to keep everyone else's heads straight, Crennel will do it).

I am positive Wright will start if he doesn't get hurt....mistakes or not....plus, who cares if it is a mistake or just the plain fact a guy can't cover??

At this point Romeo has to say this guy and that guy have to earn the position, but come opening day, Wright,Thomas, and Quinn all need to be starting if they come anywhere near the ability of the current starters.

AGAIN, I REPEAT..he isn't all over in the papers. All those articles are all stemming from the same ONE interview he did on NFL Sirius Radio, that the Browns set him up to do. He didn't go out and seek the attention, it came to him.

Not much of a radio interview if he just says "no comment" for 10 minutes, is it?

heck, You've probably posted more controversial comments on this message board then Braylon has had in his 2 years in the NFL.

These guys were not drafted to collect dust..
Thomas/Wright are definate starters..I don't feel like Quinn HAS TO START at the beginning of the season at all..just let him learn..
Let the Oline jell for 5- 6 games as that is going to be a unit that has a lot of growing pains..

Controversial is not my poinÏ. This kind of stuff has to irritate his teammates. This isn't the first time he had bold predictions and I'm sure it won't be his last.

Ohhh 10-6, ooohh we want a piece of the steelers.....

Show me Bray, then I will get off his back. Show me where you deserve to talk this much, and then say stupid things as soon as that mic is put in your face.

If he holds out a significant amount of time and it really puts him behind...not just coach talk...then I guess he won't start. Same for Joe Thomas or anyone else we drafted.

It is like Romeo said in the talk...everybody starts late on these deals....meaning teams don't get serious until just before camp.

My attitude on contracts is if teams offered in the beginning what players finally sign for , holdouts would be minimal.

Holdouts are because of two parties....and one of them isn't the agent. Holdouts are caused by the teams and the players. For nearly every holdout, teams are as responsible as are the individual players.

Too competitive?

See,I have a problem with that concept in and of itself. You can say what you will about Charlie, but if "competitiveness" is a strong point, which I believe it is,then there's plenty of that to go around. Are you saying the fact you are willing to "talk about it publicly" or "lose your cool" makes you somehow "more competitive"?

He did lash out publicly on the sidelines last year. He has repeatidly berated his team mates publicly. These are not "positive things". Speaking out about what is an "acceptible record to gauge your teams success at 10-6" is not positive. Is it optimistic? Yes. But it sets standards that are simply unrealistic for fans to talk about.

All people have really been saying is that we "hope" he gets it together. We "hope" he gets his head out of his rear end.

The problem is,if you want to be the leader of your team, you do that "in house". You take care of business "in house". You don't air dirty laundry in public. We just want him to work on HIS problems and quit airing everything out from HIS perspective and slant on things. It's not POSITIVE to the TEAM.

Quote:

That was last year. This is a different season. What's wrong with trying to reform yourself while keeping a competitive fire burning?

There is NOTHING wrong with "trying to reform yourself". Believe me,I would like to "see" nothing better. But you see, when you look at ANY NFL player, you look at their "career". Look up anything on NFL.com. Once you're drafted, you're a pro. People base what you've done based on the body of evidence they've seen during your pro career.

This is the off-season. And this year will be a brand new year. It will be year three of Braylons pro career. We've seen the body of evidence from the previous two. There isn't any "body of evidence" now to see what Braylon will do if the Browns start losing because it's not football season.

We won't know anything untill the season starts. We won't know much untill we go through the season. Because untill we see how he deals with the pressure of performing? Untill he faces adversity in game situations? All we have is history to look at.

So it's not about anybody hating Braylon. It's about him proving he's changed Feel good stories during the off season have no reflection of how he will or won't react under the pressures and adversities of the NFL season. All we have to go on is his first two years untill we find out.

He's given people reason to look for more from him.I mean after all,how can you call out an entire unit if you don't have your job "down pat" right? The point is,we're all hoping for more. We're all hoping he's,as you termed it,reforming, but we're looking for a little evidence that indicates such during the season. We want to "see that he's maturing".

Now if you wish to just ignore or advocate his past behavior, that's up to you. But I've seen a lot of athletes say they're changing, but when it comes time to put up,they fold. I mean the stress doesn't get heavy untill the season gets rolling. How will he react then? Nobody can say by what's being said now.Not saying that will happen. And for the sake of the Browns,I certainly hope he does mature and develops to his potential, but I've seen enough to expect to "see" different than what he's shown in the past, not just "hear" about it. And when and if I do see it,nobody will be happier than me! But seeing is believing. Because we've been hearing about how "great" he is for some time. And if you're doing your own job at 100% of your ability on every down, that's great.

And I agree with that unless you are talking about a dim person...and I don't think that to be the case here with Romeo and the staff..

I will also say, if it is really that close a competition, then go with the future of the position. If somebody is going to be mad or disappointed, it might as well be the person on the way out, not the guy you hope is going to man the position for the next 10 years.

You know Peen, the first thing I thought of after drafting the "Thomas/Quinn duo was about Quinn starting...........

And the first thing that came to mind was what Attack mentioned. RG-New,LT-New,LG-New.................

I figured Charlie in there through about week 6 at least.

Not saying that's set in stone of course. But when three out of your five starters on the OL never played on this team before and the LT being a rookie? I might want Quinn to sit for just a little while.

I gotta disagree with you here 'Peen, but only if your talking about the QB position. If it is a close competition between a QB who has some experience as a starter in this league but wasn't as productive due to factors in addition to what he could control and a rookie QB who could benefit from sitting a learning the system and the pace of the pro game, then you go with the guy who has experience and will mostly likely be improved with additions to his supporting cast over the rookie boy wonder. You can't base your decision on feelings and just start a guy because he's likely to be around longer and you don't want him mad at you. I think BQ understands his role and he will be okay with sitting and learning behind Frye if he has to. He knows, just as we all do, it will only be a matter of time before he's our #1 gun.

You said it all. We'd all be in an uproar if Shaffer started at LT week one because we know Thomas already has physical skills that Shaffer could only dream of.

Thomas should progress rapidly...he's gonna get the best education possible in training camp. Think of a certain stud outside linebacker going into his 2nd year who he'll be matched up against twice a day for a month.

If Quinn is ready, which I think he will be, it's NOT gonna damage his career if he starts week one. Not with our revamped line, not with Jamal Lewis running the ball 25 times, not with Braylon and Winslow to catch the ball and JJ to be Mr. Reliable on 3rd down.

BUT, if the line doesn't improve significantly and Jamal Lewis looks like the Jamal Lewis of last year, I'll change my tune. Trot out #9 to take a beating.

It's a better situation than Matt Leinart was in, IMO, and he's been ok so far.

I can only think of 3 better (projected) situations in recent memory in which a QB was able to come into: Carson Palmer (and I'd take our current defense over their defense that season), Kyle Boller and Ben Roethlisberger...ironically all in our division.

And no one expected the Bengals' situation to be as good as it actually was...everything just fell into place offensively. I can truly see that happening here.

Rarely will you ever see a QB come into an absolutely perfect situation. I'm not saying this is a perfect one, but it's one where a QB can grow and not be ruined.

I can already sense the heat coming for this statement, but I believe #9 had more to do with our offensive ineptitude than we're led to believe. It would be ludicrous to say it was all on him because it CLEARLY wasn't (if we could have run the damn ball and protected like the Colts maybe we would have had a fighting chance at 7-9 or 8-8), but I just have to believe he was more significant of a problem than we want to believe (which stems back to the both true and false belief that most fans wanted to believe that Couch never had a chance (true) and that Couch could have been an absolute stud if he had a chance (false)).

Think about it, if #9 was part of the solution and not part of the problem, why would Savage desperately try to make a deal to get Quinn? Obviously he thought pass protection and run blocking was a bigger issue (he was right), but still.

Just some food for thought. *puts on flame retardant suit*

I think Peen's point is there's no reason to keep Quinn on the bench if he's as good or better then Frye at this point. If we're going to get the same results from a rookie as we are from a 3rd year player, you sure as hell better play the rook and let him develop. If Quinn is already as good as Frye (with no NFL experience), I don't see how it's productive to keep him on the sidelines.

I understand Chuck wasn't in the greatest position last season but this year is a different story. We're not compairing the two in different situations anymore. Quinn and Frye are going to be taking snaps from the same center, getting protection from the same line and throwing passes to the same receivers. In such a situation an NFL coach better be able to tell who the better man is and do so rather easily. If he can't, it won't matter who the QB is.

Why would Tampa Bay trade away Steve Young after two years and draft Vinny Testaverde? I guess they new that Steve Young was the problem and that's why they went after Vinny.

Sometimes management isn't very smart and blames the QB for the poor play around them. Frye might have been the problem, but it's impossible to know seeing how everyone around him performed.

the biggest obstacle to BQ starting is a PROLONGED HOLDOUT ... if hes in camp within the first two weeks he will be starting ALOT SOONER than later with a GREAT SHOT at starting week 1 ..

hes LIGHT YEARS ahead of Frye on EVERY LEVEL .... only thing Frye has over him is NFL EXPERIENCE .. but BQ will all ready READ DEFENSES BETTER and MAKE MUCH MUCH BETTER DECISIONS ..

its not even close .. all the bitter folks can WHINE all they want ... at the end of the day .... IT IS WHAT IT IS ... and THIS IS NO COMP ... its a NO BRAINER ... u can have Tiger Woods or you can have Jeff Sluman ... u can have Cassius Clay/Muhhamad Ali or you can have Jerry Quarry ... U can have Micheal Jordan or you can have Craig Elo ...

not real hard decisions .... and BQ v Frye isnt much closer than any of them ...

He got too competitive and lashed out at the wrong time. He didn't back things up with his play at times. That was last year. This is a different season.

He also set a standard of being late for meetings, but who's counting.

So what if this is a different season? All past sins are forgiven? All character traits developed over the past 4 or 5 years are suddenly absolved........just because it's a "new year?"

That's what I don't get.

Then again, it's worked so well for Gerrard Warren, Ricky Williams, TO, Randy Moss, Mike Vick, Joey Porter, PacMan Jones, and Chris Henry

Edwards has dug his own grave on this one. He has to prove that he's not the guy from the past two seasons. He doesn't get a free pass just because it's a new year. In other words, he has a reputation that he has to disprove.

And before anyone says it, don't bother with the crap about how hard he's worked to come back from injury. That's his JOB.

And before anyone points to his charitable work, none of that means [censored] if he doesn't clean up his act on the field.

***Gordon, I really didn't think you could be this stOOpid, but you exceeded my expectations. Wussy.

Why do some people call Edwards "Leon?" or Chaun Thompson "Chump?" Same deal but on a lesser scale.

So Charlie is a loud mouth, who pops him gums everytime he gets put in front of the mic?

I don't think so.

Charlie may not be a stud, but Leon, he is not.

Chaun Thompson never was a loudmouth.

You could also throw the nickname Timid in there. (yes, I edited it, needed to complete my thought)
