If America was truly the "Shining city on a hill" She purports herself to be, none of her citizens would/should ever be in danger of something like this.
Our country's self-image is the ideal upon which she is based. That self-image is the lie she tells herself, daily- while Our Realty reality still falls far short of that ideal.
There is still a ton of work to be done.
"We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility..."
We ain't 'there' yet.
Not even close.
*EDIT* The ideal isn't a mirage. It isn't a lie. It's a goal. It's a horizon line. A lodestone for Human growth.
