I'm watching Jordon Love in Green Bay along with DTR in Cleveland. I've wanted a team to crack the code of developing a method for obtaining franchise QBs. The current NFL business model is insane.
When the NFL changed the rules making it a passing league, I believe they divided the league into the haves and have-nots. The method of gutting a team and tanking a season in order to get a franchise QB seems counterintuitive. On average, it takes an NFL team to go from ground zero to contender about five years. We all know that does not sit well with fans and owners who want it done in one or two.
Cleveland proved taking a leap of faith by gutting a team and drafting a QB with the first overall pick is not a sure thing. I can't even imagine the frustration in San Francisco.
I get the QB position is the key to success. I also get that the best algorithms cannot project franchise quarterbacks. You can build this amazing team, i.e. San Francisco, and watch it fizzle because the QB was not as good as projected. They are stuck with no way of salvaging it. Look at the measures Cleveland had to take to get Watson. Seriously, I think the NFL really needs to modify things.
If DTR and Love become adequate QBs, it might prove teams who have franchise QBs can produce a product and sell to the have-nots. Thus, making it a win-win for the league.
