In musicbiz, there exists an inner 'mutual admiration society' beneath the surface.
Folks who play "Classical" (read: high-brow/play it in big concert halls/Western Art Music) revere our bros who play Jazz at a high level. Every time we orchestra geeks share drinks and talk with these fellow musicians, we share how much we admire the stuff we both do. The love/respect flows both ways. Two different expressions of the same discipline.
My second love is Jazz.
I'm just old enough to have been young enough to see Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers when both Wynton and Branford Marsalis were in the band. One of my Jazz heroes is trumpet master Freddie Hubbard. He's in the same camp as Gillespie, Miles, Lee Morgan, etc.
It's kinda cool to hear bass master Christian McBride (who came along just after the 'Marsalis Messengers') talk about meeting one of his heroes.
this is from a decade or so ago.
If you have a hero who gives dap to his/her own hero/heroine, share it here.
I don't know if this specifically pertains to the thread. One name comes to mind:: Jaco Pastorius. I'm too tired to go into any detail. People either know about him, or they don't.
