Stay cool and hydrated, my NW Ohio Dawgs. It’s downright dangerous out there.

Well, for me, today was the worst day so far this week. At my real job, I sweat all day, then I had the plate tonight at a softball game. Truck read 97 F at game time.

Good news is, tomorrow should be the last of the real bad stuff.

Arch, you deserve a big red 'S' on your chest protector for doing that in this weather. Thanks for doing it for the kids! Everybody loves an ump (like it isn't hot enough already).

What motivates you to do that? Easier ways to pass a steamy afternoon. Must be the adoring fans, I bet. You have my respect, man. thumbsup

Thanks, Arch. It takes something special "to step up to the plate" so to speak. having enough refs and officials to cover games and matches is a challenge and a headache. Lots of kids in lots of sports learn lots of lessons for life. These may be some of their most valued lessons. The extreme majority are not going to play in college, while fewer will ever crack the Bigs. What you give every kid who competes in a well-supervised contest is the chance for positive outcomes and character building. Folks like you make it all possible and give it value. Hats off and thanks! And Arch. . . try to stay warm out there! LOL

I could write a book about it. But, I'm interested in it, I CAN do it, and people NEED to do it. And yes, I'm licensed, for 8 years now, by the OHSAA. Baseball and softball umps - probably the only ones that start off wearing long underwear under the unis, and in the late spring and summer, hate that they even agreed to do games due to the heat. On weeks like this one, it's nothing to lose 5-7 pounds during a game if you have the plate. All water weight, obviously. And too often un appreciated, primarily by fans that don't know the rules. Can't do anything about them. Coaches? If they have a question and are respectable about it, no problem. Go off like a loose cannon? (especially on judgement calls), they get a stare, maybe a "that's it", or maybe a "see ya". Never ejected a coach in 8 years, though.
