WASHINGTON, March 4 (Reuters) - A U.S. congressional panel said on Monday that it has served document requests on 81 government agencies, entities and individuals as part of an investigation into alleged obstruction of justice and other abuses by President Donald Trump and others.

Among those targeted by the Democratic-led House Judiciary Committee are the president's sons Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, WikiLeaks, White House aide and Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner, Trump Organization chief financial officer Allen Weisselberg, former U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions and former White House counsel Don McGahn.

"We have seen the damage done to our democratic institutions in the two years that the Congress refused to conduct responsible oversight. Congress must provide a check on abuses of power," House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler said in a statement.

Among the committee's aims is determining whether Trump may have obstructed justice by ousting perceived enemies at the Justice Department, such as former FBI Director James Comey, and abused his presidential power by possibly offering pardons or tampering with witnesses.

"The House Judiciary Committee's letter has been received by the White House," White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said. "The (White House) Counsel's Office and relevant White House officials will review it and respond at the appropriate time."

Justice Department spokeswoman Kerri Kupec said the department has received the committee's letter and is evaluating the request.

Republicans in Congress accuse Democrats of pursuing an impeachment agenda as part of a political strategy to reclaim the White House in the 2020 election.

Comey was leading an investigation into Russia activities in the 2016 U.S. presidential election and possible collusion with Trump's campaign when the president fired him in May 2017.

The investigation was subsequently taken over by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who is expected to end his investigation and report his findings to Attorney General William Barr in coming weeks.

Nadler said Mueller and prosecutors conducting investigators in the Manhattan U.S. Attorney's Office are aware of the committee's action.

"We will act quickly to gather this information, assess the evidence, and follow the facts where they lead with full transparency with the American people," Nadler said.

Some of those the committee is seeking documents from are among the dozens indicted by Mueller. They include former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn, former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, former Trump adviser Roger Stone, and former attorney Michael Cohen.

Also on the committee's list are others who worked on Trump's 2016 campaign or in the White House such as Hope Hicks, Steve Bannon, Reince Priebus and Sean Spicer; Rhona Graff, a long-time executive assistant at the Trump Organization; and David Pecker, chief executive of American Media Inc, which publishes the supermarket tabloid the National Enquirer.

Trump maintains that his campaign did not collude with Russia and has repeatedly attacked the investigation, Mueller and the Mueller staff on Twitter.

The committee's investigation will cast a wider net than Mueller, whose investigation is focused on specific crimes. The panel also is looking at whether Trump has used the White House for personal enrichment in violation of the Constitution's emoluments clause.

Several U.S. congressional committees are pursuing investigations focusing on Trump.

Democrats say Cohen's testimony before the House Oversight Committee last week directly implicated Trump in various crimes including campaign finance violations. (Reporting by David Morgan and Sarah N. Lynch Editing by Bill Trott)

Except the Dems support policies like that. Republicans keep trying to take that money away from kids. Learn your history.

Also, while all of government sucks, they can walk and chew gum at the same time.

Oh God I hope they body slam Erik Prince into oblivion. One of the few Americans I can't stand at all. Horrible person all around. I hope they look at his whole career, if allowed. That man is scum.

On a positive note, I'm certainly popping some popcorn when Don Jr. testifies. I also didn't see Ivanka's name which is interesting.

Why waste probes on potential criminal activity?

Something tells me you wouldn’t be saying this if Hillary was president.

GOPers cut children's food programs and want to gut medicare... Let them take out the trash, then maybe a good President will push for the right kinds of things instead of a potus that focuses on himself and the rich.

When do the subpoenas for the rest of DC come out? I'm actually surprised they didn't call everyone that ever worked for Trump.

Got to post something in this topic to make it balanced. This is what the democrats have to do know since they still can't find anything relating to collusion. This is their latest thing.

Just watched a Nadler interview on CNN. Seems like he is going to treat Trump more than fair. Not calling for impeachment at all, just wants to do the job he was elected to do in regards to oversight of the Executive branch. Classy guy.

Here's what I find so funny. Trying to interpret what I see a lot of conservatives saying is this......

"Well since you didn't find collusion all other possible crimes should be ignored."

When the fact is they wouldn't say that about anyone else. If your investigating any person and during that investigation you find evidence that other crimes may have been committed, you follow up that investigation by looking at the other possible crimes that may have been committed.

If you are having your taxes audited and they show you are spending more than your actually making, you may not get convicted of tax fraud, but you better bet you're going to be investigated about where that money came from.

But I guess if it's found out you got that money from dealing drugs they should just leave you alone. I mean after all they didn't find you guilty of tax fraud, right?

Bless your heart.

Hungry children are being fed by the SNAP program, which the GOP wants to eliminate. And old people who aren't covered by Medicare are getting by with help from the ACA... which the GOP has tried to eliminate fifty-four times.

Here's the problem, pitt. This is investigation for the purpose of finding something. They have no crime to investigate. There is no collusion, or any evidence thereof. They have subpoenaed everyone that they can think of to see if they find anything. The entire basis of this investigation is a fraudulent document. This is nothing more than political persecution.

By the indictments, one would tend to believe if there head is not buried in the sand that something has already been found. And they (at this point) are not asking for any documents that should not have already been produced as part of any of the other investigations.

But I don't think they are done.

I think that during the investigation of collusion they have found at least some evidence that other crimes may have been committed. The latest inquires by congress aren't about collusion. They're about obstruction of justice and abuse of power.

I believe you actually have at least some ground to stand on this time about political persecution. Not saying I agree with that, but at least this time it's the Democrats doing the investigating.

Up until this point you've been using that same battle cry when Mueller is a Republican, the man who appointed him is a Republican and the man who appointed the man who appointed Mueller was Trump.

And I agree that at least the visual isn't good here. I believe they would have been much better served to have focused on a much smaller group than 81 and then taken it where the evidence led them from there.

No crime to investigate? I don't see that as being any different than those claiming his guilt before an investigation has even started. Neither of us know if there has been crimes committed to investigate or not.

I think that Cohen and Wesselberg cooperating is also a big deal also. They also seem now to be looking at campaign finance issues, mail fraud, wire fraud, tax fraud in addition to the abuse of power, conspiracy or obstruction.

And you can call Cohen a liar or rat or the same with Wesselberg all you want but evidence doesn't lie

I think that addresses the point I made about none of know what evidence they do or don't have. I'm not willing to jump to conclusions that Trump is guilty of any crimes. I'm also not naive enough to think with all of the corroborating witnesses involved to this point that he isn't guilty of criminal activities as well.

If they think they have Trump committing a crime, they should charge him. Not a single one of you would want to be investigated because of a suspicion. Would you want to turn over your documents due to a suspicion? The 4th tells me they need a warrant.

? They literally investigate suspects before charging them with murder, or most crimes for that matter.

They charge someone once they have the evidence from their INVESTIGATION that shows evidence of a crime.

Where do you live? It certainly isn’t planet eart.

Well, this is different. I guess.

As long as they give these 80 some individuals the same leeway to sort through their documents, and delete any doc's they feel aren't needed, prior to being turned over.
